5/8: Jason Castro exit interview: “I’m a chronic yawner.”

jason castro top 4.jpg

In today’s press conference, Jason Castro proved he could say full sentences and denied he was tanking on purpose.

He also said the yawning he did on camera was not an indication of ennui toward the show, that people who noticed thought it was funny. “I am a chronic yawner,” he said.

I asked him specifically if he said “Don’t vote” Tuesday night.

“I was trying to emphasize ‘Vote,’ ” by saying it twice, he said. “Nobody heard me. I sat down and was thinking about it. It had the same syllable. [Don’t and vote.] [The second time,] I consciously went and said ‘vote’ once.”

On Simon saying he forgot his words on purpose. “I did not do that on purpose. I can’t believe I forgot such a popular line [during ‘Mr. Tambourine Man.’] THat’s writtong on your soul. It somehow slipped my mind.”

Insisting he wanted to win: “I still wanted to win. I think it came down to my inexperience. Once we doubled on songs, I couldn’t focus. My mind was just split. I couldn’t deliver either [song.]” Later he added. “I was doing my best.” He said when he said he wanted out to “Entertainment Weekly” a couple weeks ago, “A lot was going on that morning. I don’t know. That kind of came across wrong. People were kind of thinking I didn’t want to be there. That was never my mindset.”

How much experience does he have: “I started playing guitar freshman year and singing soon after. I’d learn songs but never all the way through. So trying to do two was tough.” [Longest set he’s ever done: 30 minutes.]

Songs he couldn’t get cleared: As we know, he said “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley didn’t get aired because Danger Mouse nixed clearance after he had already performed it. He also almost got “Santeria” by Sublime cleared, then it wasn’t.

Why so mellow? “I’m grounded. Nothing comes as a surprise to me, but, um, I don’t know. I am like that. I’m not always so calm. I am kind of goofy. Some don’t see my hyperness. I still have fun. I am pretty relaxed about everything.”

Doing two songs: “I was losing that power. I couldn’t connect with the songs in the given time. I wasn’t committed to either one. I couldn’t fall in love with them.”

HIs speaking skills: “I’m an awkward conversationalist. I’m trying my best now! What you see is what you get. I didn’t change at all coming here.”

HIs singing and performance skills: “I’m as raw as it gets.”

On Paula’s snafu last week: “That was kind of funny. I was confused… I don’t think it affected my performance [of his second song.]”

Was he relieved by his departure: “It was my natural reaction. I felt relieved. The pressure was off. I loved my time on there. I would have liked to have gone farther.”

Watching “Idol” in past years: He vaguely remembers watching it one season in college.

On Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” doing so well after he sang it: “I realized the power of ‘American Idol.’ It was such an honor. Cool. People hadn’t heard it. Now they have.”

What he wanted to sing next week: “Blue Eyes” by the Carey Brothers, from the “Garden State” soundtrack. (see below)

In other “Idol” news:

-DJSlim has what is a song by Jennifer Hudson called “All Dressed Up In Love.” I really like it but it sounds very ’60s, very old school, not modern at all. I have no clue where he got it from or whether it will be on her upcoming album.

-Reports are that Jordin Sparks is back to work, her voice recovered.

-Jon Peter Lewis from season three is going to be on “Good Day Atlanta” on WAGA-TV next Thursday, May 15. I can’t say he was going to be a star, but he seemed like a nice pen salesman. I’m not sure if he’s selling pens right now but that was Simon’s prediction for him.

-Q100 had Randy Jackson, Kat McPhee and Elliott Yamin on the phone this morning at the same time. McPhee said she was thinking of throwing in the towel earliy on and both said the show was extremely stressful. She felt she got worse as she went along. McPhee had Kellie Pickler at her wedding. Randy placed Kat and Elliott on his album. The trio are promoting the song “Real Love.”

-Phil Stacey’s self-titled new album opened at No. 43 with 13,000 copies sold, which is about what I would have expected. That’s comparable to Josh Gracin’s second CD, which opened a few weeks ago at 18,000. Stacey’s single “If You Didn’t Love Me” is at No. 28 on the country charts in its 15th week while Gracin’s “We Weren’t Crazy” is at No. 22 in its 29th week, according to Radio & Records. Last year, Bucky sold 61K in his first week.

-Jordin Sparks passed Taylor Hicks with 19K more sold and has 717K total. She’s now the fifth highest selling “Idol” winner, only behind Taylor. She’s now selling far more downloads—more than 3 million. Daughtry is at 4.02 million with 17K more sold. Carrie’s latest is at 2.06 mil with 14K sold while “Some Hearts” moves another 9K and is at 6.4 mil. These numbers all courtesy of Idol Chatter.

-For Clay Aiken’s “On My Way Here,” first-week sales, as projected by Hits Daily Double,, based on first-day sales is 80,000 to 85,000. That’s down from 205,000 for his last release “A Thousand Different Ways” in 2006, 270,000 for his Christmas CD in 2004 and 612,000 copies of his very first CD right after he came in second to Ruben Studdard in 2003.

And according to Georgia Claymate prez, Jenna McBride, this is what I missed Monday night at Manuel’s while I was trying to find my camera (to no avail):

*We had about 25 or so there last night. Most of the Georgia Claymates were in NYC for Clay’s last performance in Spamalot and some stayed over to attend the NYC CD Release Party and some stayed over for the CD signing today at Virgin Megastore in NYC. We had two girls who had literally just flown in for the party last night and came straight from the airport. It was an awesome party. And we especially enjoyed having my friend Jason there who came and played and sang. I think that Jason said that he knows you. His name is Jason Bowen. He is a singer/song writer for Sony/AVT or ATV (one or the other). Sony has changed so many names recently with so many different departments it’s hard to keep up.

Jason has been writing songs for Sony for about 12 years and he just happens to be friends also with Ryan Tedder, the guy who wrote the lead song on Clay’s new CD, “On My Way Here”. Of course Jason sang it for us last night and did a magnificent job. He and Ryan have co-written songs before and he sang one of them last night also. It was awesome too. And another song that he sang last night was one that he wrote that Sony has sent to Kelly Clarkson for consideration. Jason also sang a couple of other songs that Clay has recorded. Hopefully Jason will be able to write some for Clay some day and since their voices and style are somewhat similar, I would love it if he could sing backup for Clay also. Jason has toured with Barry Manilow as a backup singer.

Here are a couple of reviews for the new Clay Aiken CD:

The Daily News gave him one star.

The music Aiken’s writers matched to such hoary bromides continues the singer’s established love for the kind of power ballads that died in the mid-’80s. In this world, the band Mr. Mister still rules; Rick Springfield remains a pop player.

At least such warm-milk pop suits Aiken’s creamy tone. More than ever, he sounds like Boy George, only not so butch.

Here’s the Baltimore Sun, somewhat kinder:

As much as his record company would want him to be, Aiken isn’t a crossover pop star. He’s a male Celine Dion, a nerdier Michael Bublé, a new-millennium Barry Manilow, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The sooner he embraces that, the better his albums will sound. With “On the Way Here,” he’s not quite there.

D- In response to your question from the previous thread (3rd song?)

“If I’m not mistaken, I think the 3rd song is supposed to be their potential 1st hit if they were take the title. Ring a bell?”

From what I hear, it’s producer’s choice, judge’s choice and whatever the contestant wants (clearance permitting.)

RH - Thanks for the interview. I truly believe that overall, Jason is an extremely very nice person. I just don’t feel that he is an AI type.

Linny and Harrietth, I am so glad that I am not the only one who remembers the Crackers. I do remember when they torn up the field and built a store around the tree. My Dad would take all six of us children, him and Mom to a game in the early sixties and it would only cost les than $10.00, and this was eating and drinks. This was a family of eight!!!! Boy, those days are long past. I think the princess was named Priness wanna win. Do remember music scene in the 70’s. You couldn’t live in Atlanta and not know about that. In 1973, I went to the Omni to see Elvis and wore hot pants and white knee boots. That was the instyle at that time. Would load up the car with friends and head to the Varsity to flirt with guys (Dad didn’t know about that). If he had, I would not have gone a second time. Like Edith Bunker would sing “Those were the Days”.

I stand corrected. Rodney, I think you’re right. The 3rd song is the contestant’s choice. I was thinking about the final 2. Sorry.

Making Sense…I answered over on the other thread…That was the ear-bleeder I was referring to.

Rodney what are the 3 songs from the final 2…original(otherwise known as ear-bleeder), a previously performed song, and……?oh wait…I think I remember…the contestants pick 2 songs, one previously performed and another.

Anyone remember the Great Southeast Music Hall at Lindberg Plaza (nestled down in the corner)? No chairs — seating was cushions on the floor, in a stadium sort of configuration, floor raising up from the stage… with a little wall behind each row for leaning… the “stage” itself was no more than 1 foot high..

i remember sitting, literally, at Jorma Kaukonen’s feet, my best friend at Jack Cassidy’s feet… as Hot Tuna played

Or seeing the Steve-Martin-Mull show

Or Ravi Shankar

Or Sean Phillips — has anyone else ever heard of a singer from those days (late 70s, maybe early 80s) named Lori Jacobs?

and soooooo many others!!!

I liked him, will miss him and feel the show will be less interesting without him.

OMG linny - Are we getting older or what? Remember Mac Davis playing at Misty Waters on Candler Rd in Decatur? I very well remember Lakewood. Also. they used to have the Great Southeastern Fair there. Smokey and the Bandit was filmed there as well. Remember when Atlanta first opened Underground? That was the hot spot then. Everyone had to go. Of course, it didn’t have all that it does now, but Atlanta was proud of it. I was scared at first to go there, b/c I thought the streets may caved in . Pretty stupid of me, but I was young.

But back to baseball. I was at the stadium the night Hammering Hank broke the homerun record. What a night that was!!!! That was an experience one will never forget. The fans went wild then.

Linny we could go on forever, but we don’t want to bore the others with our stroll down memory lane. But, gosh those were fun days. Where did they go? No pressure then like it is now.

Thanks WE - You have never had a hamburger as good as the Bucket Shoppe. And those fries, they were to die for. DDTH was the place to go Underground. Chastain in the early 60’s on a weekend was so crowded when they had the bands. It was hopping. You could sit or dance, which ever would float your boat. Alot of hippies, but boy was it fun. I guess we could give all the young ones a history lesson concerning Atlanta. Oh Oh, you know where Tara from GWTW is sitting? OMG, that just hit me. It is in Fayetteville down from the square. It is the SAME house that Scarlet wanted to keep so bad and it still looks the same.

I just need to get off of memory lane and get back in the present. Sorry guys and gals.

Archie and VFTW! Well…they picked Taylor Hicks and bragged that they gave him his win…completely ignoring that the Soul Patrol at that time was scarier than the Claymates!

I’m waiting for Lost, too. I liked it better when it started at 9 but that won’t stop me from watching it.

If you guys do a Lost blog tomorrow I’m gonna miss it. I should be home about 4 then I’ll try to catch up and probably write a novel-sized comment. I want to apologize now.

I would also prefer a DC and SM finale. I’m not a betting person, but I bet it will both Davids. however, hope that I am wrong. We won’t have to wait long to know. Can’t believe the season is almost over. Seems like it has flown this year.

If any of you watch Bones, Ace Young is making a guess appearance on the next episode, along with another idol, but I can’t remember who it is.

Deirdre, exactly on VFTW! The same year they discovered that by picking Pickler, at a point when she was still better than many others, that they could claim influence. It was only natural for them to switch to the clear favorite then and now. Now you know why I cringe whenever people try to give VFTW undo credit.

Jason’s celebrity spokesperson on Leno was Huey Lewis.Jason spoke full sentences, said he had a few projects in the works, didn’t say what they were. My own personal opinion is that he should go ahead and finish that last year of college. Have something to fall back on , if the music thing doesn’t work out.

Whats so great about Jason Castro?!?!?! Well to me he has many great traits and is a calm person with a relaxing voice .To me he is an inspirational figure that i can turn to and love . His soft voice and sincere personality makes me feel good and safe when i listen to his music . I was just saying today that when im driving in the car i cant stand to listen to hard music that it hurts my head and throws off my thinking, I think that i am able to listen to him while i drive any day . I love you Jason. I was so sad when you were booted off . I stayed up all night sad. I dont like when other people rationalize ideas about him that are negative when they don’t even know him. And people say that he isnt very smart cause he forgets words its really hard when your under all that pressure. I just wanted to say what i think about my shining star. ,Jason Castro

Good morning mushblogians.

First re Vickie Delozier’s comment on Jason last night, “I dont like when other people rationalize ideas about him that are negative when they don’t even know him.” Um…honey…you don’t know him either!

On to Lost. No novel yet, I want to read what everybody else has to say but:

Spoiler Alert—if you haven’t seen last night’s Lost episode yet do not read this

I think I know one thing that will happen next week. With Sayid on his way to the island in the little boat, I think that 6 people will be rescued…the Oceanic Six of course(but the biggest mystery is how on earth Hurley fits in Sayid’s boat.)One would think Jack would wait until everyone else is off the island BUT he just had surgery…Kate goes because she’s taking care of both Jack AND Aaron.

The other survivors won’t get off because they will have ‘moved the island’ and they won’t be found.

Claire is with her(and Jack’s) dad in the mystical cabin. Is she dead? One would assume because Jack’s dad is dead….but on this island, you never know for sure.

There’s obviously a supernatural element to this island which involves the ‘space/time continuem’(do I understand that? Please…I can’t even spell it)

This gives us hope that the O6 are NOT the only survivors and the rest of them are still on the island but…because they moved the island, couldn’t be rescued.

To lurkers: it makes sense if you’ve been watching the show.

I’m looking forward to reading everyone else’s ideas!

got you on your mini-novel… agree with your rationale… can’t wait to see how they handle it… i don’t think claire is dead. but somehow daddy convinced her to stay with him for now… maybe we’ll get some insight into that…

interesting that Locke has been pursued by the Others since birth (i can never remember the name of the corporation that is running the ‘recruitment’ of certain people, evidently on behalf of the island)

how will Widmore react to the island being moved? does desmond actually ever get to see penny? do we get to see more of ben pursuing penny’s death?

1 hour (40 minutes) is NOT enough! how have you guys done it all these years!!!! i thought 24 was bad enough, LOL, having to wait a week!!!

Some Idol news: Today is the day when our finalists go back to their hometowns for a big celebration. Traditionally, one of the song choices is announced. I’m assuming they can be found on the web sometime today.

Since this is my day off, y’all will have to go searching.

And who is this guy, Richard? We’ve met him a number of times. When Locke was told he had to kill his father and just couldn’t do it, Richard was the one who gave him the information that his dad was ‘Sawyer’, the con-man who cheated our Sawyer’s parents.

We also met him when Ben was still young and Richard was instrumental in helping Ben kill the Dharma people.

And then last night, we find him testing Locke as a boy(and being disappointed in the results).

And he NEVER changes…no matter how many years have passed.

This leads me to a question…how long EXACTLY and in real time have the crash survivors been on the island? They think they’ve been there for a few months…..but is that true?

Vickie, so you’re the fanatic responsible for keeping Castro on the show. Listen, my guess is you’re 19, having issues with authority, had a recent breakup with a guy who was a real jerk, and are fantasizing that Jason is somehow more than just a pothead moron with a weak voice. You have been swept away by his “bedroom eyes” and apparent disregard for establishment.

Now, I know you’ll get over this difficult phase, but in the meantime, until you’ve come back to reality, please stop voting on American Idol. It just screws things up. Tell your friends to stop, too.

Morning all, for old skool Friday and to celebrate the Braves 6th win in a row.

Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today! We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field. A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man; Anyone can understand the way I feel.

Chorus: Oh, put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today; Put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today; Look at me, I can be centerfield.

Well, I spent some time in the mudville nine, watchin’ it from the bench; You know I took some lumps when the mighty casey struck out. So say hey willie, tell ty cobb and joe dimaggio; Don’t say “it ain’t so”, you know the time is now.

Chorus

Yeah! I got it, I got it!

Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes; You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride. Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all - a moment in the sun; (pop) it’s gone and you can tell that one goodbye!

Chorus Chorus Yeah!

Just read a little tidbit regarding David Cook. He was asked to sing the National Anthem tonight at the Royals baseball game and declined after he heard that by doing so, he would bump the choral choir kids of an elementary school. So instead what was worked out, the kids will sing the anthem, DC will throw out the first pitch and sing Take me out to the Ball Game in the 7th inning stretch. He gave the spotlight back to the kids. Now is that an Idol or what????????

Yes, I do remember Lake Spivey. Used to go there alot as a child. It was a very nice place to spend a day. Its a shame it’s not there any more.

Lost Discussion Continued

I meant to mention Richard, too, Deirdre — He recruited Juliet; he tried to recruit Locke practically from birth; as you say, he was there, along with Abbadon, at multiple points, always looking the same.

Funny last night, I was trying to explain to Nate about the time thing — told him about the “payload” from the Freighter that Faraday used to determine there WAS a problem; but when he saw the scene about the doctor being murdered AFTER (subjectively) the people on the island pulled him out of the water with his throat slit… he was going nuts trying to reconcile that, LOL. I pointed to the 3 boxed sets (although he may choose to stream them on his computer in HD instead).

More and more I’m beginning to wonder if Michael was the body at the funeral home.

Question: in the flashforwards, have we seen Desmond? I’ve been trying to remember over season 4 — has Des been seen in the future world at all?

And won’t it be interesting to see what Locke says Jacob-via-Christian told him to do to effectuate moving the island! and how Locke convinces everyone else?? because i’d be willing to bet it involves everyone “believing” it to a new spot, somehow. Can Locke manipulate the islanders as well as Ben has manipulated the Others, on behalf of the Island?

One more thing before I respond to the Lost stuff. Last night someone asked about the Great Southeast Music Hall and the Alex Cooley’s place. I remember those. In fact, I saw Willie Nelson at the music hall, back around 1974 or 75. His lead guitar player, Jody Payne is from Atlanta, and in fact, Willie came to town and asked around for someone to fill in with him, and Jody did. The rest is history. I knew quite a few of the folks in the music scene there in the 70s.

linny..it’s also possible that moving the island has something to do with another undiscovered Dharma station.

I don’t believe Desmond has appeared ‘in the future’. Not sure.

Michael is still a good possibility for the funeral home body. Not related and not a friend(he DID betray them)but Jack is still moved by this person’s death.

Harmony: Hank hit his 715th homerun on April 8, 1974.

D: I will definitely cast my votes for DC. What he did for those children was a deciding factor for me.

Harrietth: Country Green, YES YES YES. Also The Covered Wagon, Mama’s Country Showcase. Since I was born and raised here, there aren’t many, if any, places I don’t know of. Like Harolds Bar B Q, The Yellow Jacket, Melears Bar B Q, just to name a few. Its sad to think most of these places are gone. One of my favorite places to go was Misty Waters. Oh, what about Fun Town Amusement Park on Stewart Ave? I know, I know, this is a AI blog and not a stroll down memory lane, but what the heck. It;s good to bring back memories. Right???

D, maybe Michael becomes some sort of hero to the people on the island or is instrumental in helping them get off. That would explain why Jack was moved by the death. On the other hand, isn’t it impossible for Michael to die?

Rodney, what are YOUR thoughts on Lost — it’s “Lost on Idol Friday”!!!

No one could run that place like Mama W. After she passed away, it was never the same and all the regulars begin to drift. I saw alot of country stars there. When they tried to re-create it, it bombed. I think later it became a place for teenagers to hang out minus the alchol.

I was the token female in Paul’s band, but, boy, was it great. I sang and played rhythm guitar. We did do country music there, but not exclusively. All of us in the band had a rock ‘n roll background, including Paul. He had the purest, most beautiful voice and could sing anything. He was great on Ghost Riders in the Sky,” as well as the Johnny Mathis song, “Twelfth of Never.” There were two bands at CG—ours and Gordon D’s before he left for Mama’s Showcase.

Hey Yank! If Atlanta had stayed burned down, it might be significant … but like the Phoenix which is our City Symbol, we rose from the Ashes and [at least for many years] thrived. What’s going on NOW in Atlanta, that’s another story… but during the 60’s and 70’s and even into the 80’s … Atlanta was a happening place … a good place to live, still very “green” … young, upwardly mobile, but still hip. A true Southern Belle of a City, unlike some of the dirty ice-maidens of the north!

hmph. Dayum Yankees anyway!!!

Yes, Paul did die in 2001. I was at his funeral and Barbara’s too. So sad. He drank himself to death, and Barbara had Alzheimer’s. Their son. Allen, lives in Easley, SC now. I am still in touch with Paul’s family.

As for Gordon, I wrote to him once, but never heard back. So much for old times and old friends. I am sure he has a different life now, as have I.

Rollin down a backwoods tennessee byway, one arm on the wheel, holdin my Lover with the other, s sweet, soft, southern thrill. Worked hard all week, got a little jingle on a tennessee saturday night. Couldn’t feel better: I’m together with my Dixieland Delight.

Chorus: Spend my dollar, parked in a holler neath the mountain moonlight; hold her uptight; make a little lovin, a little turtle dovin on a mason dixon night. Fits my life, oh so right, my Dixieland delight.

Whitetail buck deer munchin on clover, redtail hawk settin on a limb; a chubby old groundhog, croakin bullfrog, free as the feelin in the wind. Home grown country girl gonna give me a whirl on a tennessee saturday night. Lucky as a seven livin in Heaven with my Dixieland Delight.

oh darn. our computer crashed just as i was sending a post, and there is NO way i can reconstruct it. suffice it to say…

there’s a connection…. Atlanta in those days was a Big City with the heart of a Small Town - love, loveliness, a sense of belonging that isn’t present in today’s Atlanta so much, but was then … Atlanta’s tried too hard to become an “International City” … tried too hard to become the New York of the South … and lost a lot of it’s loveliness in the last 20 years, unfortunately.

But Atlanta — or should I say, Georgia in general — is a place with Heart and Soul [can you just hear the piano now? dum dum dum da-da-da-da dum…] and it draws you back. Athens is that way, as are many of the big-small towns around Atlanta. The concept of Atlanta is so much MORE than just the city limits … it’s all the communities around Atlanta that make up a special place… and Yank, you can try to put us down all you want, you can poke and prod and disrespect … but i defy you to find a place where people CARE any more than they do here [generic “Atlanta”, NOT “the ATL”—gawd i hate that!]

And the birth place of a lot of good things, this area of the world!!!

no, K, can’t IGGIT, lol… there isn’t any animosity here, just some folks trying to reach out and explain to a Yank why we love it here so much is all ~¿@

JT - i remember that, lol… i think it was at a time when everyone was ‘gunshy’ about commenting about ANYthing, right? ~¿@

and in a way, Atlanta proper (the “ATL”) really doesn’t have the same …. ambiance? atmosphere? feeling? sense? that it had 20 years ago… or even 10 years ago, really. started changing drastically in the early 90s IMHO.

but if you expand “Atlanta” to include from Macon to Rome, Carrolton to Athens, a sort of lopsided circle of towns, villages, and small cities … Atlanta is a wonderful place to be!
