5/6: Top 4 performance show

It’s songs that cleared from the 500 most influential songs of the rock era courtesy of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Here’s the list for reference.

The Who and Bob Dylan cleared songs, I think, for the first time. And that may have been the first time we heard Bob Marley. The Who should be happy. Not so with Dylan.

Jason Castro should have gone home last week. Can his fans save him tonight after? It will probably be Syesha and Jason in the bottom two, if they even give us a bottom two. I liked his first performance but you can’t mess up lyrics in the final four and expect to skate by again. As Simon says, sorry. (Fortunately, it looks like Jason is in danger, based on dialidol.com. Let’s avoid a Daughtry/Tamyra repeat!)

My rankings:

1-David Cook (“Baba O’Riley” The Who) fifth - The song everyone mistakenly thinks is called “Teenage Wasteland” is a much better pic than Duran Duran for Cook. He, as usual, mellows it out in the opening. He actually misses a note but he’s much more comfortable here. And it begged, begged for a much longer arrangement. I wanted more! Randy: “That’s more like the David Cook I’ve grown to love.” Paula: “I want more David Cook!” Simon: “Welcome back, David Cook!” A/A-minus

2-David Archuleta (“Stand By Me” Ben E. King) Fourth - Remember Josiah Leming, the homeless kid, murder this song during Hollywood round? Well, Archuleta won’t repeat that. This is a your usual earnest song that fits Archuleta’s voice and style. He even throws in a little bit of Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls.” He plays to the teen gals and they love it. Randy: “At least there’s one guy hitting the stage trying to win the whole thing. It was hot!” Paula: “You’re seasoned already.” Simon: “You could have whistled and it would have sounded better than Jason’s song. I thought you struggled a little at the end. But look, in the grand scheme of things, I’ll call that as the best performance so far.” A-minus

3-David Archuleta (“Love Me Tender” Elvis Presley) eighth and the pimp spot! - His first attempt at a romantic ballad. He tries to look smoldering but instead, he just looks like he’s squinting early on. I’m not sure I’m enjoying seeing him that close up. He kind of whispers the high note at the end. Can’t tell if that was accidental or deliberate. It was good, not quite worth a pimp spot. Randy: “Another great performance for you.” Paula: “That was my favorite performances from you. I felt your heart.” Simon: “You didn’t beat the competition tonight. You crushed the competition.” B-plus/A-minus (I noticed he hit that second to last note better in the rehearsal version when they showed it at the end.)

4-Syesha Mercado (“Proud Mary” Tina Turner) Second - This song shows her strengths and her ultimate weaknesss. She’s an actress with solid pipes, a pretty face and great stage presence. But it comes down to authenticity and however good she is, it still feels like play acting. A good act, nonetheless. And she’s about as confident as it gets. She is going for broke. Randy: “You’re showing the heat late in the competition. Very nice. ” Paula: “You look like a star. Magic happens and you made it happen.” Simon: “I’m sorry to put a slight damper on things. I thought it was a bad shrieky version. A bad version of Tina Turner.” B-plus/A-minus

5-*Jason Castro (“I Shot the Sheriff” Bob Marley & the Wailers) *Third - He finally gets to really go reggae to match his dreads. He actually seems to be enjoying this one, as opposed to Neil Diamond. I enjoyed it. It’s his best performance in ages though he didn’t really add much to it in terms of arrangement. Randy: “That was really karaoke Bob Marley.” Paula: “I never saw you perform more to the audience. I wasn’t crazy about the performance or the song.” Simon: “Stand back. That was utterly atrocious. That was a song you do not touch. This was like a first round audition massacre. I don’t know what you’re thinking.” [I don’t agree!] B-plus

6-Syesha Mercado (“A Change Is Gonna Come” Sam Cooke) sixth - It’s reasonably heartfelt but kind of boring. She does successfully hit the money note at the end. Randy: “For me, the first song I loved. I did not love this one as much. I didn’t love the arrangement. I felt you pushed out things that weren’t there. You don’t need to do anything extra. It felt all disconnected. Fell flat for me.” Paula stand and claps. “I want to hug you. How you orchestrated the vocals. Beautiful. Welcome to your dream. This is it, Syesha.” [She starts crying. That’s kinda sweet. And she keeps crying and crying.] Simon: “I have to be fair. I’m going to agree with Paula. I thought Randy got that completely wrong.” [Wow! Didn’t see that comng!] “Before I sang the song, I researched it. Found out why it was written. It came out during the civil rights movement. I feel like I’ve changed a lot.” B

7-David Cook (“Hungry Like the Wolf” - Duran Duran) First up - A bit of an odd choice. Cook has charisma but it’s not like that of Simon Le Bon and this was a rare time when it felt kind of grunge-karaoke. He didn’t add much to the song at all. So it was okay, nothing to remember in a week or two. Randy: “That was just okay for you.” Paula: “You left me with a big appetite.” Simon: “It was good. I know where he’s coming from. It’s a little copycat. Is it good enough to get you through next week, yes.” B

8-Jason Castro (“Mr. Tambourine Man” Bob Dylan/The Byrds) seventh - He goes all folksy and it’s vintage Castro for the first 15 seconds. But then he completely botches it by forgetting the lyrics and fails to fake it by going uh uh uh uh. He recovered afterwards but at this stage, there’s no excuse for that. Randy: “Jason’s not in the zone tonight.” Paula: “It is what it is. At this point in the competition, you’ve solidified your niche.” Simon: “I’d pack your suitcase.” Agreed. C

And I’d like to apologize to the Claymate folks for not making it to the CD release party. The problem: I lost my camera. I arrived at Manuel’s Tavern at about 10 p.m. yesterday and realized my camera had disappeared sometime between work, playing tennis and Manuel’s. I went back to work to try to find it but alas, it was gone. I suspect I dropped it while placing my laptop in my trunk at a parking lot downtown. And I stupidly left no contact info in the camera bag for even an honest person to figure out. So some lucky schmo has my camera and 3GB in photos. If they know anything about “Idol,” they’ll be amused. Fortunately,

Anyway, Clay’s CD “On My Way Here” is out today. And so is Chris Sligh’s “Running Back To You.”

I left a message with Jenn McBride, the organizer of the Claymate party and will update to see how it went.

In other “Idol” news:

-MJ’s Big Blog has Michael Johns and Carly Smithson dueting “One Love” on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. It’s kind of a strange take. Not nearly as good as Bono dueting with Mary J. Blige.

-CMT’s “Gone Country” was renewed and inevitably, another “Idol” finalist is in: season four contestant with the really strange pronunciation skills Mikalah Gordon. I know, I know. I can’t see it either. The others competing: Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), Lorenzo Lamas (yes, “Grease”), Irene Cara (“Fame,” “Flashdance”), Chris Kirkpatrick (N Sync), Jermaine Jackson (yes, he is a Jackson), and Sean Young (actress, “No Way Out”). Sounds like a fun crew but I don’t see any of them becoming country stars. It’s in production now and set to premiere in August.

One more thing before I go, since we are talking Country. I just heard last night that Darius Rucker, of Hootie and the Blowfish, has put out a pure country album and is trying to make it as a country star. Bye again.

MJ sounds great, but I’m sorry, granted she’s got a big voice, and she’s trying to bring something different to the song, but Carly sounds off-key. Maybe it’s just me…

Agree Making Sense. I found myself wishing Carly would just be quiet and let me listen to MJ…but, I don’t think that really surprises anybody! :-)

Later harrietth…it’s looking more and more like Archie will be putting us to sleep tonight.

Deirdre, I like that second pick for David Cook.

By Justin

May 6, 2008 6:30 PM | Link to this

I really like David Cook’s song choices. I like Syesha’s first one, not too sure about the “A Change is Gonna Come” I guess because I never really heard that song…?

David A. and Castro’s songs seem like the same old same old… although I think David might do really well with one of them and Jason will probably use those dumb props.

By Deirdre

May 6, 2008 6:34 PM | Link to this

Here…I hope this is a little clearer. It has a little more detail, too:

David Cook — “Baba O’Reilly” by The Who and “Hungry Like the Wolf” by Duran Duran

Syesha Mercado — “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner and “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke

Jason Castro — “Mr. Tambourine Man” by Bob Dylan and “I Shot the Sheriff” by Bob Marley (cover by Eric Clapton)

David Archuleta — “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King and “Love Me Tender” by Elvis Presley (cover by Norah Jones)

ok, so JC is officially beyond ridiculous. Sayesha was a poor imitation. Cook was, well, eh….. just eh. and archie was actually fairly ok.

OK…Archie won round #1 placement: (1) David A (2) I can’t believe I’m typing this Syesha (3) David C (4) Jason

Round #2 (1) David C (1 1/2) Syesha (3) Archie (4) Jason

And, yes I know. We haven’t even heard David A yet. And, my placements MIGHT change. But, one thing we can all agree on: Jason is GONE after tomorrow night. I agree with Simon. He should just go back to his room and pack right now.

OK…FINAL round 2 placements for me:

(1) David A (2) Syesha (3) David C (4) Jason

I’m a HUGE David C fan, so it’s very difficult for me to say that David A won the night with Syesha close 2nd.

By DawnH

May 6, 2008 9:11 PM | Link to this

OK - did David A actually try to make an Elvis song his own! AGGHHH. You just don’t change an Elvis song, and all the judges could say is that he was the best of the night. I can’t believe they didn’t say anything about him changing THAT song THAT much. What a bunch of hypocrites! It wasn’t even recognizable.

David C was #1 for me on both songs; Syesha #2 on both songs; I hate to say, David A #3, but because Jason sucked just that bad, I HAVE to place him 4th.

Frankly, I think Jason just wants to go home. But don’t be surprised if he stays tomorrow - did you hear the little girls…

This has to absolutely be the worst top 4 contestants in Idol history, with 1 exception.

By Deirdre

I kinda got the rug pulled out from under me tonight. I agree with the judges…Archie was outstanding!

One: Archie, Stand By Me. He sang a great arrangement very well, with energy and maturity. He obviously enjoyed himself and looked far more confident and at ease than he has for the whole competition.

Two: Syesha, A Change Gonna Come. I ranked this high not so much by how well she sang it but by how much she felt it and transmitted that feeling to the audience.

Three: Archie, Love Me Tender…again, the maturity level amazed me…well sung, well performed.

Four: David C. Baba O’Reilly….this song reminded us of what a strong and wonderful voice David has. Despite tonight’s ranking, I still think he should win the competition.

Five: David C. Hungry Like a Wolf. I was not blown away by this, but he’s still a good singer.

Six: Syesha, Proud Mary…Good not great!

There’s no ranking beyond this. Jason doesn’t deserve to be ranked. How could I choose which song was worse? First he made a mockery of I Shot the Sheriff…then he massacred Tambourine Man! Ridiculous to think that he’s still here with the likes of Carly and Michael sitting in the audience watching!!!!!!

By Deirdre

May 6, 2008 9:22 PM | Link to this

I think we have 3 terrific singers left in the competition. Syesha has stepped up to the plate and deserves to be in the top 3. Archie, no matter what my objections to him, did a wonderful job tonight with 2 VERY well known songs. And David has brought a terrific voice and a talent for interpretation to the competition that has made him a contender EVERY night!

It is easy to pick who our top 3 should be….it won’t be so easy to pick the winner.

Wow. I think we all know who should go home after tonight. Three excellent performers and one ungodly awful slow motion trainwreck.

  1. David Cook - Baba O’Rielly - Absolute perfection. This was Cook at his absolute best.

  2. Syesha Mercado - Proud Mary - Wow, what a transformation Syesha has made. Three weeks ago I was ready for her to be gone, and now she has changed herself from a SCREAMER to a singer, and is absolutely fabulous. We are seeing a star being born right in front of us.

  3. David Archuletta - Love Me Tender - When I saw Monchichi was singing this my first thought was “Oh what a surprise , a heart felt ballad. again. just like every single other song he has sung.” But, I have to give him his due, this was an absolutely flawless vocal masterpiece. Excellent.

  4. David Cook - Hungry Like The Wolf - I like David, I liked his take on this song, and I loved his vocals. It wasn’t WOW WOW WOW material, but it was a good solid performance.

  5. Syesha Mercado - A Change is Gonna Come - I absolutely hated the arrangement, and I wish she had just sung it straight up to Sam Cooke’s original, but that said her vocals were absolutely fabulous again! Great voice, awesome sound, HORRIBLE arrangement.

  6. David Archuletta - Stand By Me - Monchichi singing a sweet heart felt ballad. Who’d a thunk it. YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.

  7. Jason DISASTRO - Mr. tambourine Man - Ummmmmmm it was better than I shot the sheriff. Of course eating moldy street scum would be better than Jason’s version of I Shot the Sheriff. PLus he forgot the lyrics. UGH.

  8. Jason DISASTRO - I shot the Sheriff - Please shoot the singer, before he tries to sing again. Please shoot the singer, cause he sucked with a Capitol S………

OK, as for who shoud go home - No contest. If Jason does not leave after this bizarre ghastly ear-killing, gut wrenching, gag-inducing suckathon he put on I may just fly to Hollywood and blow up the Idol studio.

Final standing : David Cook, Syesha Mercado, David Archuletta, and the Dreadlocked disater who I can no longer even stomach saying his name.

Please vote Syesha! I took a lot of notes tonight…

  1. David Cook- 1st song: didn’t really like it, so I’m glad he saved the other one for last. Simon: “It’s good enough to stay next week” DUH of course he’ll say that! Because he wants him to win: BIASED ALERT!!!

2nd song: Expected Simon’s remark; anything to get him through, but no, I liked it.

  1. Syesha Mercado- 1st: Totally expected that remark from Simon b/c he clearly wants a David-David final, so he’ll down her next week too. What a butt — I agree KLC. Singing was all right. Performance was GREAT!

2nd song: I love Syesha, Simon scared me there a minute. I agree with Randy though, but who cares, she deserves to move on through!!

  1. Jason (don’t vote) Castro- 1st song: I looked at my mom’s face and it look as though she was in disgust. Oh man- I really saw that coming from Simon! However, the judges were so harsh, it will encourage fans to pick up and vote…maaan!

2nd song: THANKS A LOT SIMON! Now Castro will make top 3 b/c fans will vote. —Umm it will be utter disgrace and chaos if he makes it through. at least on my part.

  1. David Archuleta- 1st: He did good, but DID struggle at end. Not best perf. thus far, but best vocal.

2nd song: Great job. SAFE! Best I have heard him in a while.

D, I didn’t say they couldn’t sing. I just think they are not good performers and not as good as in past years.

I think Syesha has really come a long way, and I think she has a great voice but, I don’t see her as an AI winner. I do believe she would be spectacular on Broadway, and I don’t see that as a negative. I think Broadway is much more difficult.

David A can sing, but I just can’t take him seriously. When he started singing Love Me Tender, I actually had the uncontrollable urge to giggle. If he had sung Its A Small, Small World, I could have bought it. I just can’t picture him as the AI.

Jason is an incredible goof, but even he has a pretty good voice. He’s not a performer.

The fact that Jason, David A, and even Syesha (and I really like Syesha) are still here and Michael and Carly are gone is just nuts.

Emily - the only contestant that I would even consider buying a CD of is David C.

Well, looks like my comments didn’t post, so I’ll just quickly summarize.

David Cook.

1: Good, not great.

2: Great.

Syesha Mercado.

1: Great performance.

2: Honestly, didn’t like it much, but she deserves a spot in the top 3.

Jason Castro.

1: Horrid

2: Okay, but at top 4? NO WAY!! Not in a million years. Forgetting words sealed the deal, but I’m worried his fans will pick up that phone, esp. after Simon’s remark.

David Archuleta.

1: A bit boring, but good vocals.

2: Great.

Who I Want To Go Home: JASON CASTRO!!

Who I Think Will Go Home: Syesha :(

—Just because of Jason’s fan base, and the little busy signals I am getting.

If I am wrong: great!

I actually expected to hate Archie’s version of Love Me Tender. I loved it. He changed it just enough so that we didn’t keep expecting to hear Elvis…he made it youthful, yet with more maturity than he’s EVER shown. And his vocals were great.

I’m not sure what we should expect from an American Idol. The show always is and always has been a popularity contest…but it most cases, the right person wins. Kelly Clarkson..a pop princess who can sing just about ANY style really well is totally different than Carrie Underwood, who is strictly country but really good at it! Ruben, who fought the powers that be and is just now starting to let doors open for himself. Taylor…easily the most popular winner with the most powerful fanbase…has struggled to succeed. Fantasia has managed to stay busy and earn a good living. Jordin, whose name I almost didn’t remember is the only Idol winner who feels almost like a nonentity to me.

What I’m saying is…it’s really hard to define what an American idol is when considering who has already won.

What I noticed with Jason tonight is that he actually tried hard on the first song to get back in the game. What that shows is that when he tries he is so weak. So I really don’t understand how in the world he made it so far.

All I want to say is that Kat McPhee forgot the words to Hound Dog during the top 4 Elvis week and she made it to runner-up. I think the judges have bashed Jason so much that he doesn’t care anymore. He knows they want a David vs David finale. Simon already said so.

Loved David C. David A. was good but bores me. Jason wasn’t very good and should be the one to leave. Syesha sounded like she was shrieking a few times in the first song and I didn’t hear the second one because I was on the phone and muted the sound.

I could be off base, but I’ve noticed that it seems the judges spend different amounts of time with the singers and to me gave gave Syesha more than her share of screen time tonight, especially when compared with David C.

I could be biased because he’s my favorite of the bunch. It was just an observation.

They want a David/David finale because those guys KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING as opposed to Jason who looked like he was high during the first song and coming down during the second. He was awful! Why wouldn’t the judges want a David/David finale????? They’d even be happy with a David/ Syesha finale!

They’re the judges…shouldn’t they be telling us who they think should win??? If that’s not their job…what is????

I’m a David Cook fan. Have been since he sang Hello. I did like Jason’s Hallelujah and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Was hoping he would really do good tonight after the Paula “incident”. Sadly, it wasn’t to be. I didn’t like Jason’s song choices. Never liked Mr. Tamborine Man at all.

1- David A. - song #2 - Brilliant. Reminded me why I find all the knocking him on here so confusing.

2- Syesha - song #1 - Wow. Smokin’. Almost too perfect; might need to rough it up a little bit.

3- David C. - song #2 - I’m clueless on this song, but he did a great great job on it vocally, and performance-wise as well.

4- David A. - song #1 - He did a great job on a song that can be a bit boring in the hands of a lesser artist.

5- Syesha - song #2 - Loved her connection with the song and all that, but hated the arrangement. Taylor did it stronger at his very first audition.

6- David C. - song #1 - One of my most hated songs, and he actually made it sound good. Solid.

- - - - - - - -

- -Jason 1/2. If I thought he gave half a d*mn, I’d feel sorry for him. But I dont think he does, so I feel as irritated with him as the judges do. If he is not gone this week (which I’m afraid the severity of Simon’s comments might actually help him), it will be a travesty of all that is right and good in music, past, present, and future.

I know Jason sucked but where I lost any more interest for Syesha was when she had to pull out all the stops with racial comments and how she cried over reading all about the civil movement that the song was written about, etc. and then turned her tears on out of desperation. You can sing, you are beautiful, but why oh why you have to place the race card.. nobody cares these days. Get over it. People are prejudice to everybody, every face, everywhere. Whether you are black, fat, foreign, country, red-neck, nerdy, gay, rich, poor, religious, not.. people are going to find something wrong with you. It is when you stand up for yourself and overlook ignorance.. is when you will win the war sista. Sing girl sing and quit your whining.

I think the judges should critique the performances. Not say so and so should win so the others might as well forget about it. I can’t sing a lick, but if I was on that show and the judges kept saying that someone else was going to win, I would be very discouraged. Maybe that’s what happened to Jason. He seemed to try at first, but not anymore.

dee…there wasn’t a judge 2 years ago who thought Taylor Hicks should win, and yet he did! Simon still pouts about it! Their job is to tell us what they think…that involves letting us know who they like and who they don’t like.

babyface…I didn’t see Syesha’s crying or talking about what the song meant as ‘pulling the race card’.. she’s been through 10 weeks of work, almost always ending up in the bottom group…I think Paula’s and Simon’s praise of her performance just got to her in a very genuine way. Sometimes relief just overwhelms you…haven’t you ever had that happen?

i agree D about Syesha’s reaction to the judges and the comments she made… she was just telling her experience with the song, and how it became meaningful to her after last week (we know they pick the songs 2 weeks ahead, now)

I’m pretty much in agreement that lil David pulled out the stops and was excellent tonight BUT i don’t think he was all that the way the judges went on and on… may be they were you know… overcomplimenting so people will think he’s safe and not get QUITE so many votes… ONLY problem with that, the reverse psychology in that case would dump votes to JC and.. um NOOOOOOOOO please don’t let that happen!!!

I actually liked Syesha’s proud mary, it was … theatrical, however, and that’s why it wasn’t so popular … they’ve finally recognized instruments can be used, why not finally give in and realize that broadway/show tunes are a viable part of the popular music culture and STOP harping on that, LET people BE theatrical if they feel it for the song. just a thought. I thought her version of Change was moving, but … i still don’t feel it when she goes “big” … i like the sultry, husky side of syesha MUCh better.

Neg’s take:

OK, I would like to know what happened to DC tonight. It seemed to me like he was just going through the motions and was distracted. I suspect he had a personal issue, perhaps with his brother’s health, because that was not the DC we’ve come to know and love all year.

Rankings:

1. Archuletta: I cannot believe that I’m actually giving this kid high marks, but tonight he was really, really good. On both songs he did a beautiful job, and probably made himself the favorite again.

2. Sayesha: I’m glad to see she’s straightening her hair. She looks real hot, and is dynamite on stage. Good vocals and lots of emotion will definitely help her, but I agreed with Randy that the arrangement was boring on song #2.

3. David Cook: He mailed it in tonight. As I said above, this was lethargic and several steps below what we’ve grown accustomed to. Duran Duran?? Lame, cheesy band, lame cheesy song, lame cheesy performance. Next to his brutal performance from “Inspiration Week”, this was the worst I’ve seen him. Baba O’Reilly was certainly a much better song, but it didn’t crop to 90 seconds very well, and still seemed forced and uninspired by DC.

4. Castro: “I Shot The Sheriff” was the worst performance I’ve ever seen on American Idol outside of auditions. Second song he forgot half the words. He should have been eliminated months ago, and America deserves what they got for putting him through because of “Bedroom Eyes”. He never should have made it to the Top 12, but I still say he has enough “dreamy” appeal from young females to stick around.

Bottom two: David Cook and Sayesha. Going home: (GULP) David Cook.

By Deirdre

Oh Neg…thank goodness…someone who agrees with me about D. Cook tonight. Not his best night in my opinion. I liked the second song much better than the first but he didn’t look like he was trying tonight.

I don’t think he’s going home though.

I liked David Cook, it wasn’t his best night. Maybe he is distracted by family, maybe he is distracted by a new girlfriend, but he is still my favorite for a reason. A mediocre performance by Cook is vastly more entertaining then a vocally perfect performance by Archie.

Syesha: I think she started to break down during Randy’s comments. No need to throw out the ‘race card’ debate, that argument is as tiring as the argument you are trying to fight.

Jason, what a joke.

By RJ

I think their ratings will continue to sink as the contestants they have left are really boring. I have not watched the show in weeks and could only stand to watch a small part before changing channels.

It was apparent weeks ago how this will end up. Syesha and Jason will be voted off the next two weeks with David Archuelta winning the whole thing as they probably think they can easily manipulate hime because of his youth.

Based on the performance of both songs, I rank the Idola as follows:

  1. David A….very good on both songs
  2. Syeshas…based on her singing performances she has blossomed and ahd gone so well with her personality and songs. The judges pimp David A and have never given Syesha top or bomb comments.
  3. David Cook…he was not up to par with his sons. the 1st one didnt’ have enough words in it. He had a weak 1st song and a good 2nd one.

  4. Jason: I liked the lst song, didn’t care for the second song. Also, he sort of had a poor attitude when not singing. He definitly is the one who should go home base the performance of both sons.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been reading (and enjoying) the blog but this is my first post. After last night, I can only think that David Castro being on AI is Ashton Kutcher’s best, most involved PUNK’D yet! Seriously, he didn’t even have the dignity to try. I am a DC fan but to me last night was a wash for him - just forgettable. I have been enjoying Syesha’s performing side but have always felt like she was “playing a role”. She did seem genuine last night and while not technically perfect, it was memorable and fun to watch. DA is technically perfect but I groan with boredom every time he sings. I swear he has a worksheet (soft intro, look camera left, mid level note run, look straight, power note, etc.) that he plugs each song into. His lack of creativity and his failure to stretch himself by trying a new vocal style makes him perfect but boring. Here’s hoping for a DC and SM finale - interesting and fun to watch!

Looks like I’m standing alone in rankings because I think Syesha won the night! Her performances were for me easily the best and most professional. She can sing, dance and act and brought all of those skills to the table last night. I disagree that the arrangement was terrible. I think it was right-on for a female singing a song so heavily associated with a male voice.

I would also place David A. in second as his first song was a killer and second was positively amazing for a child who has obviously had little, if any, experience with real love. To be able to emote as he did is just pure, raw talent!!!! Still not the completely put together performances of Syesha, however.

David C. in third, and I concur completely with the previous “phoned it in” assessment. David will most probably win the whole thing but he made a very common mistake in picking two songs made famous by groups rather than by solo singers. It is very difficult as a solo to successfully cover a band’s song. Both his performances were, for me, weak at best.

Even weak performances could top what Jason did. Jason sucked canal water, start to finish, both songs. I’ve been saying since the beginning that he should NOT have been in this competition and I blame Simon entirely for his early, quite stupid, endorsement of Jason. He is a one note, one octave, one style crooner, NOT A SINGER, and had no business on this show. If he stays, it will be an insult to Idol and an inditement against tween girls being allowed cell phones.

I agree with everything you said A4A except I’d switch Archie and Syesha. I think Archie’s voice is better, less prone to going a little flat or a little sharp. I thought, when the season began, that Syesha had a good chance of making it this far. Then, after a number of lackluster performances, I lost hope that she would be the last female standing. But she’s definitely picked it up and decided to bring it home.

My only objection to Syesha’s performance last night was I thought she went a little too far with Proud Mary. It was a passable Tina imitation but she could have brought Syesha to the stage and been great.

By harrietth

Jason Castro channels Bob Marley? No. It was a note-for-note, move for move poor imitation of the man and his music—even down to the clothes Jason wore. It was like someone playing dress-up. He even did the little sighs Marley is famous for. No way, no how should he be back.

And, Dierdre, you are absolutely right about Archie. In fact, and this is funny because we don’t “know” each other, I was sitting there listening to him and saying to myself, “I wonder if Dierdre is liking this as much as I am tonight?” LOL.

Wow…I really can’t stand Archie. Yes, his voice is pitch perfect but am I ever entertained??? No. And he has yet to ever make a song his own except for ALW week when he slaughtered the beautiful “Think of Me”. Last night’s arrangement of “Love Me Tender” was not his. It was the Norah Jones & Adam Levy version. Check it out on iTunes - it sounds A LOT better.

I’m a David Cook fan all the way - but I’d have to agree that last night wasn’t his best night. Will he still make it to the finale?? I’d bet on it.

I wasn’t able to get through to vote for DC or Syesha at all last night. I was able to vote once for SM and twice for DC. I got busy signals the entire rest of the time. That’s good though!

Harrietth…I will admit to being amazed last night. It was like I was looking at a different kid. Yeah he was the same giggly goofball while being interviewed but…during Stand By Me(which was flawlessly sung) he actually looked relaxed and like he was having fun. He interacted with the audience in a happy way rather than his usual stilted “now I should look over here” way.

Then, his Love Me Tender was spot on again vocally but also exhibited a surprising understanding of the lyrics.

I’m still a D. Cook fan because his voice is better and he manages to impress me week after week(I guess we’ll have to give him a by this week)but Archie, IMO, actually EARNED his way to the finals last night.

Sorry about your camera, Rodney. I know what that is like. Mine was stolen from a booth I was sitting in at The Hard Rock when I went to the restroom. I took a lot of notes last night, but I was in a rush this morning and left them at home. I had some good thoughts, so lets hope I remember them.

David Cook (Hungry like the Wolf) – Being a Duranie, I was proud he picked this song and wondered what he would do with it – well he did nothing. It was a boring performance; he went to fast and did not make that David Cook connection. Syeshia (Proud Mary) – Hey, I called this one!!!! All I can say is that the girl could play Tina in a Broadway Musical of her life….because she was acting like Tina. It was kinda screamy towards the end. Jason (I shot the sheriff) – Someone should shoot that guitar, why did he bring it on stage at all? So pitiful. Did he mouth the words “Don’t Vote” or just vote vote? Archie (Stand by Me) – not surprised at this song choice. I was not impressed; he just doesn’t not have any range. 2nd songs

David Cook (Baba O’Riley) – Now this boy brought it back! I wish they had more than 1 minute and 15 seconds, the arrangement was a little choppy, but he did a wonderful job! Syeshia (A Change is Gonna Come) – I have always liked this song, but she oversang it. I understand it took on meaning for her, but if you really get to listen to the lyrics, it will speak to you, and it just didn’t with all the runs and the screaming. Her dress was beautiful! So, Brooke is gone now, so Syeshia has to start crying? Jason (Sitting on the dock of the bay) – Wow, he really doesn’t want to be there? Does anyone think he messed up the lyrics on purpose? Archie (Love me Tender) – A romantic love song by Monchichi? I think I just threw up in my mouth a little. I do not think this kid has the prowess to rearrange these songs, so who did it this week? I did not like it. How come he gets all this high praise when he does something like that? It wasn’t even the same song. Can he PLEASE take a drink of water before going out on stage, maybe some chapstick too? He was so breathy and hit some off notes….

If I had to rank tonight, David Cook, Archie, Syeshia, Jason…. I did call and vote for Mr. Cook until I fell asleep on the sofa around 10:30pm. I got through about a 1/3 of the time on the second number.

By Achin4Aiken

May 7, 2008 9:00 AM | Link to this

Where you and I differ, D, is that my immediate impression was of Syesha doing a tribute to, rather than an impersonation of, Tina. I was amazed by her. I also definitely heard some slight off-notes from David A. when he did Elvis. Not so with Syesha. She was genuine on both, very different songs which is another reason I thought she was the best. David C. and David A. both chose two similar songs and somewhat similar arrangements. Syesha’s choices were diametrically opposite. She stretched more which says a lot. I’m also becoming her fan because of how hard she has fought to stay in the game. I just think that at least once she deserves to be given her due and be given the night. To me, she earned it, IMHO.

By harrietth

May 7, 2008 9:02 AM | Link to this

D, yeah, David Cook is my boy, too. But, like you, I agree he earned his way in last night. I was very worried about David C after his first performance, and then again after his second. He just seemed disconnected or something. More like it was an effort to perform, even the second one, although it was pretty good. So, like others here, I might speculate that it was something in his personal life that caused it. However, he will have to leave that at the stage door if he is to make it. I know that is hard, but he will have to do it.

And, I also agree about Syesha. You said it best, D, when you said she could have brought Syesha to the stage and been outstanding. If she had tried a little less Tina and more Syesha, it would have worked better. I voted for her a number of times, but had trouble getting through to both her line and Cook’s. Also, no way was she playing the race card. She was, indeed, fighting back tears the whole time Randy was talking-Paula, too.

I also must say that I’m quite confused by everyone constantly mentioning “screaming” in relation to performances by Syesha and Carly. They are BELTERS, people. They have powerful pipes and, trust me, you would hear the difference if someone actually was screaming a song. We’ve heard many of them in the audition process. A belter is not a screamer but a power singer. Famous belters - Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Barbra Steisand, Janis Joplin, Tina T., etc. They don’t scream, they powerfully belt out a song. Thanks.

By Deirdre

Neg…I didn’t hear any politics in Syesha’s statement…she did a beautiful job last night and was left shaking and crying with relief. Sometimes, in situations like that, our mouths tends to run like a faucet. I saw no ulterior motive in what she said.

By Lara

May 7, 2008 9:25 AM | Link to this

Screaming verses Belting - it all depends on the song and the notes they hit. I don’t compare the screaming to that of a heavy metal song like Iron Maiden or anything…. But when it sounds forced, and it is off key and it certainly doesn’t fit = screaming. IMHO

By Deirdre

May 7, 2008 9:34 AM | Link to this

I think the difference between a belter and a screamer is tone. On occasion, Syesha belts…on other occasions she screams. It’s an issue she has with controlling her tone. She CAN belt…she doesn’t always pull it off.

I believe Randy did make her start to cry, but she didn’t actually do it until Paula’s comments. I kept thinking “is she getting ready to cry” when Randy finished talking.

wow this has been a morning! i’m off to pick up the kid from college, and slept in just cuz i could…so i missed all the fun!!! Great comments especially D, as usual, Lara, A4A, and a few others who took the time to not only comment, but explain. I’ve enjoyed reading… but for some reason i’ve just not had the oomph to bother putting my thoughts on paper. err. screen.

she also didn’t make her comments that some of you are so determined to make controversial until ryan encouraged her more than once. it was like she was resisting, then said to herself, “just explain why you are so emotional, girl!” and she tried to explain (i understood what she was saying, i think, as did D, A4A and others..it wasn’t a political statement it was a personal statement)

Harrietth…I actually thought she was fighting back tears while she was singing the song….she seemed to be surprised by Randy’s critique and a little hurt but the full out crying started with Paula.

I absolutely think she was not making the kind of political statement referred to by some. If anything, she was saying that her reading about the song and its beginnings, simply put it in historical and emotional context for her. Nothing more intended IMO.

This is some of the worst garbage I have ever seen. David Archuleta SUCKS. He made up his own lyrics to Stand By Me because he obviously forgot them. Jason Castro has 0 talent. I mean less than 0. Because he looks like John Travolta circa Welcome Back Kotter does not make him a good singer. I mean that Bob Marley performance was horrific. I mean just awful awful awful and torture to listen to. I would give that a D- and the other song was just noise. I mean that was an F. If I could go lower I would. He has no talent and doesn’t belong on that stage. Carly should be up there and Castro should go back to Cuba! :). To 4? He wouldnt make my Top 40. He is awful! There are 2 people with talent David Cook & Syesha Mercado. David Archuleta needs to go home. I mean he looks like a little boy who is lost and needs his mommy. I am tired of his eye closing and his stupid face. He looks like he needs to go to the bathroom. He butchers song after song and people cheer him like he is Elvis. He is awful people! He stinks! He is a little boy in a competition for grown ups! I think he should go and give David Cook the title he deserves!

Calling Jason Castro’s performance last night ‘disastrous’ Craig Berman from MSN.com had this to say:

Jason Castro has spent the past three months perfecting his image as the slacker dude with the guitar who doesn’t try very hard but sneaks by on his natural gifts and personality. Every week, the judges have gotten more and more annoyed at his style, but it doesn’t seem to faze him.

The audience has passed Castro along from week to week at the expense of more talented performers, allowing him to drift into the final four. Now, he’s at a point where he’s the least adept singer and performer remaining. Combine that with an “Idol” staff that seems determined to create a pop star without allowing them to sing any songs that are actually played on Top 40 radio stations and disasters happen.

The show deserved what it got — the worst pair of performances, at this stage of the competition, in the show’s seven-year history.

The boy knows how to sing a song. He doesn’t have the stage presence of Syeesha, but he can sing a song about as well as she can, imo.

Hope he gets the perfect producer.

I’m probably going to get stomped on for this…I was over at mj’s and she has a video up of Clay Aiken singing his new single.

I liked it! It’s cheesy but not typically so. It’s warm and uplifting without being coy.

And here’s the most amazing part. Clay(by his own admission, not the coolest dude in the world) sings it beautifully…without all those annoying little idiosyncrasies he had during Season 2.

It’s a very nice song and I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t get at least a little play time on radio.

Jason did not sabotage, he just stunk as usual on his first song, got brutally ripped by the judges, and then choked under pressure on the second. It’s just that simple.

He’s not very bright, but he does know he’s on the show still only because of his “bedroom eyes”. His lack of talent has been conspicuous for months now, and everyone, including Jason, knows that he has inferior talent to the rest of the Top 12 finalists that he was undeservedly lumped in with.

Look, he knows he’s just a tiki bar hack who never, ever should have made the big stage. I think he’s just acting like he doesn’t care at all because it makes it easier on his own conscience to handle it that way than to explain what the hell he’s doing still in the competition.

The swooning, mezmorized bimbos that have kept him around are the ones who look like idiots now, not Jason. He’s simply along for the ride they carried him on, and probably thinking about how many of them he can bang before his celebrity status wears off and it’s back to $150 a night at the beach bar.

Dierdre, I am not going to attack you on this because I happen to like “On My Way Here.” I listened to it online the other day and really liked it, too. I do not have a problem saying I like the song at all. Clay’s old album got on my nerves, but as he said himself, he has lived a little now and experienced some things, therefore I believe that contributed to his recent good performance

He has an amazing voice. Yes he is young, but it is American Idol who decides the age range, so don’t hold that against him. Also, if you get discovered at age 17, you are really in a good place to grow from there.

Not only did he shoot the sheriff, but he shot the deputy and killed his chance on AI..LOL..however since I am my own person and refuse to follow or go along with the majority or Judges who I think are all overrated I actually enjoyed Jasons take on Bob Marley. I think he did a Good job(didnt blow me out of the water) but as Rodney Ho said..It was by far his best performance. I could care less what Randy(overrated) Paula(her opinion doesnt hold any water)Simon(I rarely agree with him anyway and its the public that counts not Simon.)Anyway its safe to say that it going to be the battle of the Davids. David A nailed both songs..David C..is just well David C..he already had carved out a niche and created his own spot. JT, I think with Jason it’s a lot like the way men in general are able to see right through the crap and know what other guys are thinking, while women are gullible as hell and don’t seem to have a clue. We see Jason for what he really is, always have, while women, especially younger ones, think he’s so much more. For the bimbos, he’s got a “charisma” that “reprents something” meaningful for them that they find intoxicating.

We know the truth. He’s just a slacker-pothead-moron who is milking this for all its worth. He’s smirking because he can’t believe the bimbos just keep buying his act, and it’s a cue for us guys to understand that he knows that we know that he knows exactly what’s going on.

The older ladies have seen his kind before, learned from it, and are much less likely to buy into the BS like the bimbos will.

I’m really surprised and disappointed that no one commented on Syesha’s referencing Tina Turner’s version of “Proud Mary” as if it were the original version.

Then, she said, “it’s been covered by so many people since Tina did it”.

UH! The song was, of course, written by John Fogerty and recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival and later covered by Tina herself. I mean the song is even listed among the top 500 songs as a CCR song. It is not even listed as an Ike and Tina song.

Rodney, the question I would like you to ask Syesha after she is eliminated next week (hopefully) is “Do you realize that Proud Mary was originally written by John Fogerty and recorded by his band Creedence Clearwater Revival and later covered by Ike & Tina Turner”? Thanks.

Now, for my belated rankings:

1 - David Archuleta - Stand By Me - I think this may be the first time I have had him ranked number one.

2 - David Archuleta - Love Me Tender - I thought the reason the last note was not more audible was because his voice was tired.

3 - David Cook - Hungry Like the Wolf - I disagreed with everyone on this I think. I liked it and was surprised the judges and everyone else tore it apart.

4 - David Cook - Baba O’Riley - I thought it started off rough and what he did with it was reminiscent of other songs he has done on the show and I didn’t think it was quite as good.

5 - Syesha Mercado - Proud Mary - Despite her failure to credit John Fogerty and CCR (a white songwriter and a white band) appropriately, I thought she did pretty well with this song.

6 - Syesha Mercado - A Change is Gonna Come - I agreed with Randy. I thought it was pretty boring. It was touching how she was touched by the song. I only wish she would have taken the time to research “Proud Mary” as much as she researched this one. I’m sure she thinks John Fogerty covered Tina Turner.

7 - Jason Castro - Mr. Tambourine Man - I liked the way he started off in this one. Then, he forgot the lyrics.

8 - Jason Castro - I Shot the Sheriff - Atrocious!

I would have predicted Jason Castro’s exit. It was pretty obvious. Neither of the Davids had a terrible outing although I will say that David Archuleta is making a case for himself to win this thing in the late going. Could David Cook have peaked too soon? Maybe.
