4/26: Phil Stacey interview, ratings, Carly Smithson fallout
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m in D.C. this weekend visiting friends so this will probably have to tide you over until Monday.
Phil Stacey, the Navy family man and “Idol” finalist last year, always struck me as an aw-shucks nice guy without a terribly distinctive persona despite his bald head and decent vocal prowess. But he did have a real passion for country music while on the show.
So Lyric Street Records (Rascal Flatts, Josh Gracin) signed him. His new self-titled CD is set to hit stores on Tuesday.
I readily admit I came into this interview kind of cold, without any prepared questions. But Stacey was conversational, friendly and properly grateful for the opportunity to have a career.
“We go through valleys and peaks where we feel like we’re on top of the world,” Stacey said. “I got to say: this entire thing has been the peak of a mountain. I feel like I’ve been living this dream for a year and a half.”
“I would never make the claim that I’m anything special,” he added, with proper modesty. “I love music… I feel very undeserving of the incredible life I’ve had.”
Here’s the video for his first single, “If You Didn’t Love Me.” The single, a mid-tempo love song, just broached the top 30.
The song is “really what I’m about,” he said. “I’m a man who is where he is because of the loving encouragement of an amazing wife. And I’m thrilled to show my acknowledgment to the world.”
He hopes his album sells. “I’d love to sell a million records,” he said. “But more than anything, I want my music to touch somebody.”
He said he is frequently mistaken for Chris Daughtry given his bald pate. The funniest moment he said was when he was at the Empire State Building during the “Idol” tour last year and a bunch of gals came up to him and one said, “You look like that guy from ‘American Idol.’ ” Then some gal started singing “It’s Not Over.” “I said, ‘Chris Daughtry! That’s awesome.’ I never told them I was on the show. For a sec, he considered pretending to be Daughtry, but “I thought Chris might be offended.”
Stacey said it’s fortunate his wife likes his shaved head, which he’s had since college. So he’s not even 100% sure if he’s balding.
He said though he’s a songwriter, he decided to pick from 600 songs made available to him from Music Row. He tried to pick songs that reflect his own life, which he says is going well. So he had to deliberately pick one break up song. “It was too sunshiney without it,” he said. And he included a couple of Christian-based tunes. He stays in touch with Mandisa and Chris Sligh, both whom also live in Nashville and are in the contemporary Christian world.
“If I Didn’t Love You” was originally tied to Georgian Jason Aldean but Aldean passed it to Stacey. “He graciously gave it to me,” he said.
Stacey - who is picking David Cook as the winner this year — plans to open for different acts, including Kellie Pickler, Randy Travis and possibly Kenny Chesney.
Finally, his favorite celebrity meeting was with Tim McGraw. He was in New York City during the “Idol” tour with his wife at Central Park. She needed to go to the bathroom so she ducked into the Ritz Carlton. There, McGraw came up to Stacey and said he was a fan. “I was starstruck,” he said. “It threw me off.” Stacey and his wife ended up hanging with Tim and his wife Faith Hill. He said he tried to be cool by not whipping out the camera but now regrets missing that opportunity. “It’s a story I’ll tell my grandchildren,” he said.
In other “Idol” news:
-“Extra” asked executive producer Nigel Lythgoe about the declining ratings. His response:
“We’ve had a lot of pressure put on the media this year talking about losing ratings We’re still number one, number two… It starts to annoy you after awhile. Come talk to me about ratings when we’re not number one on the charts anymore,” he declared.
He added, “I think this is a strange time with the writer’s strike. People said that we would be seen by more people because there wasn’t anything else on television, but it’s not true. People aren’t that stupid. If there’s something on that you don’t want to watch, you don’t turn your television on and you find something else to do which is why I believe all the ratings are dipping this season.”
-Did Carly Smithson get hurt by the song she sang, “Jesus Christ Superstar”? Maybe. The song has some historical controversy more than 30 years ago. I doubt most of the voters were familiar with the song for it to matter much. But it probably didn’t help matters.
Here’s the story from the New York Times.
Since its debut, and particularly following the release of the 1973 film version, “Jesus Christ Superstar” has been railed against by some Christians for its portrayal of Jesus as confused and at times unwilling to accept his role, and because it hints that he had a sexual relationship with Mary Magdalene.

Mr. Ho, Phil’s single is called “If You Didn’t Love Me.” You got the title wrong. I am pleased that you got to know the awesome man behind the awesome voice. You are seeing what we Philnatics have seen since he was on the show: a man who loves his wife, family, God, and country, and will say so. He has shown that voice, not only on AI, but since age 13, when he was performing with his brother and sister. He was the lead singer of the Navy rock band Pride, as I’m sure you know, and as a reservist, he has performed at the 232nd anniversary of the Navy; sung the anthem at 2 NFL games and also at Carnegie Hall. Phil and his wife, Kendra, are wonderful people, and we look forward to more great things from them.

Hey I just have a good memory- nothing of knowledge….. but it says that AI’s only on for an hour this week so i don’t think they can fit 10 songs in an hour. and hey no matter the orig. artist, they are different people singing it so maybe it’ll be better…!?
By JTesla
April 26, 2008 11:48 PM | Link to this
I know that the top 5 did 2 songs in the past, but also I believe that the top 10 shows have always been an hour long. So 10 songs can be fit into 1 hour, I was just hoping that there would be confirmation before we get too upset that we would have a full hour of Idol and only 10 minutes of song.

JTesla, have you ever been to Georgia,or the deep South? Answer at your own leisure.

April 27, 2008 1:02 AM | Link to this
Harmony, yes. When I was 17 my family went on a road trip to Washington DC. We took a northern route to get there, but then drove down the Atlantic and along the Gulf. So I’ve been to the coastal area of Georgia, but not your region.
Other than that I went to college in Kansas, and took a road trip through Arkansas and up through Tennessee. It’s not the deep south, but it’s as close as I’ve been in 20 years. My college years gave me a healthy appreciation for thunderstorms, aside from the people, thunderstorms are the only thing I miss about Kansas.

Justin, JT said what I was thinking. I’m pretty sure we went to an hour for the top 10 show, so there’s definitely time for them to do two songs each, especially so with abbreviated versions like they do.

Good morning mushblogians!
I was surprised to hear that Michael Johns was the guest of sportscaster Tony Kornheiser at the White House Correspondents dinner over the weekend. While I remember that the season 5 contestants visited the White House, I think this is the first time an Idol has had dinner ‘with the president’!
Hope y’all had a good..if wet, weekend!

Good morning! D, Tony Kornheiser is a number one Idol fan, and he has talked about Idol on every one of his Pardon the Interruptiono shows this season. He always ends the shows that way. Last week, he was very shocked at Syesha being in the bottom two. So, I guess the Michael Johns thing was his way of “making it up” to MJ for his early exit. TH was adamant in his disagreement with the early departure.
And, I have such mixed feelings about Neil Diamond. I just hope he is decisive and not vague.

harrietth…I used to watch Pardon the Interruption all the time when Mr Hollywood lived at home. He is a sports fanatic….loves football, soccer, tennis, golf, college basketball and even has gotten into NASCAR since moving to Los Angeles. He LOVED Pardon the Interruption! So I knew Tony Kornheiser was a big Idol fan but I haven’t been watching lately so didn’t know he was an MJ fan.
I’m going to take a ‘wait and see’ attitude with Neil Diamond week.

Likewise on the shout out to AmyG — hope all is well! Thanks for the reminder D. I like Neil Diamond — in a nostalgic kind of way.
Brenda Lee song came on some TV show recently — hubby said (and mind you, hubby is NOT a country music fan much) “Why can’t people write songs — and sing songs — like THIS any more?” He was talking about the clarity of voice and the musicality of the song itself. I believe it was “It’s the End of the World” … i have to admit i was stunned that he said it, but i immediately understood what he meant.
going to be strange today — not one but TWO co-workers out, so i don’t honestly know if i’ll be around much at all — it could end up being a boring, not-busy day, or i could be swamped. soooooo see ya later, maybe!

D, I watch PTI at least three times a week, and I love to hear what Kornheiser has to say about Idol. I love football and basketball—baseball, too; especially the Braves. But college football is my favorite. I am a Gamecock (SC), but still love my GA teams. I think it is neat that TH loves Idol. It demonstrates how the show transcends all walks of life. There is even a Classics professor here that loves, loves, loves Idol. He talks about it all the time. Neil Diamond? Good idea to “wait and see.” I’m with you, D!

Rodney…on the comments about Carly’s song choice. Jesus Christ Superstar was a controversial musical. Some people appreciated that it showed the human side of Jesus…the uncertainty, the doubt and the idea that he might have been a reluctant savior. Others were adamant that it was blasphemous.
I knew when Carly decided to sing that song, she would be in serious trouble. She couldn’t afford to lose votes and she would…no matter what her performance was like.
Most voters didn’t have to be familiar with the song to be upset by it. As a matter of fact, if most voters had known the context of the song, there would have been less of a problem.

Can’t believe so many folks dislike Neil Diamond. I have always loved his songs, although I agree a couple have been played to excess. How did you guys feel about Barry Manilow?
I think Jason should get his ukelele back out for tomorrow night with Song Sung Blue. Otherwise, I’m looking forward to ND night - it just HAS to be better than Dolly Parton songs.
Also, A4A, most mentors are neutral, but Andrew Lloyd Weber just put it out there and really did critique the contestants. Thought that was refreshing.

I, personally, love Barry Manilow. It may be cuz his mom tried to hook us up when I was 22. I like his music. I like the way he mentors the contestants. It seems like he gives them solid and useful advice.

And a Good Afternoon to You All!!!!!
Wasn’t going to post today, but the devil made me do it.
This is a repost from last Thurdsday nigh on my song choices for tomorrow night:
David C: Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show - High Rolling Man - Wake Up the Band
Jason: Sweet Caroline - I’ll Come Running - Solitary Man
David A: First You Have to Say You Love Me - I Am I Said - Let the Little Boy Sing
Syesha: Make Believe - Song Sung Blue - You Don’t Bring Me Flowers (sorry Deirdre)
Brooke: Thank the Lord for the Night Time - Tiny Wings - Walk on Water
As you all can see, I chose three for each one.
I chose the three for David C because they are more of a rocker song. For Brooke, I thought these were more on on the inspirational side and would fit her style better.
Let me know if any of you agree or disagree with any of the above. I would like to have some input.
The others, I didn’t pick for any particluar reason, other than I think they would do good.

A4A - and you touched on one of the things i’ve been thinking a lot about …. MELODY. Rodney’s new thread is up, and one point mentioned is that there have only been FOUR songs from the present decade by ANYone this year. Mostly because of the theme restrictions. One reason i think people (in control) keep harkening back to older “theme” structures is because music back “then” had melody not just beat!
see you on the new thread ~¿@

Oh, I forgot. I really, really do like Barry Manilow. But in true honestly, I do like ND also. BM would come first before ND, but I do like him.

I like ND better than Barry Manilow, but Neil Diamond’s time has come and gone—just like Dolly Parton’s. Barry Manilow’s too, for that matter. If they MUST have mentors, please, please, give us someone who is still relevant.
