4/18: Finally— the Josh Gracin interview!

Josh-gracin-2.jpg

ABOVE: From his appearance last year at a 94.9/The Bull client party.

Okay. It’s a quiet day, a day to finally bring out the Josh Gracin interview!

He was more forthcoming than he was the last time I interviewed him two years ago and seemed to be in a much better place, more comfortable, just happier.

Gracin’s career, post “Idol,’ opened strong with three top 10 country singles and 670,000 copies sold of his first CD in 2004-05. Then he hit a wall as he worked on his sophomore release. Lyric Street released what was going to be the first single of the second album in March 2006, “Favorite State of Mind.” It did okay, breaking the top 20, but wasn’t a breakout hit. So the album got held.

At this stage of his career, all the time he’d been spending on the road promoting his records had taken a toll on his personal life. (He’s married with kids.) And he said he ultimately wasn’t satisfied with the way the album was coming together. He changed producers and he wanted to get more involved in writing his own songs.

Ultimately, he said, if “Favorite State of Mind” had become a massive hit, the album would have come out, an album “I was not happy with, not comfortable with. It should have been better.”

That’s what got him to the current single “We Weren’t Crazy,” an autobiographical song. “I had just gotten off the road,” he said. “I thought about how my parents disapproved of my relationship when I was 16. [He married his high school sweetheart.] I thought about how people thought I was crazy joining the Marines. I’m fortunate it’s worked out three kids and 11 years later. I proved them wrong. I wasn’t crazy!”

He admitted that the post-“Idol” whirlwind meant strain on his marriage. “A lot of those times, I was gone. When you are a high school sweetheart and things are moving so far, you grow up at your own time. It’s hard to really get a chance to figure each other out. A lot of family members around me went through hard times and stuck it through. I wanted to set an example. I believe once you get married, whatever hard times you have, you figure it out and don’t take the easy way out. We try to do anything and everything we can to make it feel like there isn’t a disconnect. Just last night, I finally played around with my Mac. I figured out how to do an iChat. My kids can see me through the computer and I can see them back before I go to bed at night.”

He also wrote a song that he literally placed on the album at the last second, an ode to his wife “Unbelievable (Ann Marie).” He penned it in January and actually played it for the first time at Cowboy’s in Kennesaw:

“I wanted to immortalize my love [of my wife] and our time together,” he said. “It really has no traditional verse and chorus structure. That’s why it’s unique to me. It will be the second single.” When he played it at Cowboy’s, “they loved it. It was definitely a defining moment.” That convinced him to put it on the album.

He said that was his third or fourth trip to Cowboys. “The crowds have gotten bigger and bigger,” he said. “I love going there.”

He wasn’t miffed that “Idol’ skipped over him for their recently Nashville update, which featured Phil Stacey, Bo Bice and Bucky Covington. “I hope that later on down the line, they’ll give me a chance to get back on the show and perform and show how much I’ve changed and grown as a musician.”

Gracin’s current CD “We Weren’t Crazy” has sold 25,000 copies over two weeks. I spoke to him just as he was getting first-week sales of 18,000 (compared to about 57,000 from his first CD.) “Normally, I’d be upset,” he said. “But I haven’t had anything in the marketplace in four years. And everything is going digital. I’m not upset.” He noted that 35% of his sales came from iTunes which is high for a country artist.

His current single “We Weren’t Crazy” is edging up the country chart and is now at No. 25.

I asked him his memories of “Idol” dredged back up courtesy of ‘Idol Rewind” in syndication. He was eliminated Bee Gees week. “It brings back memories of me never singing disco again!” He said he has nothing negative to say about his Idol experience. “I didn’t sing anywhere near as I would have liked but vocal cords are like muscles you have to build and that was a great way to do it,” he said. “You can really hear the changes in my voice from the first to the second album. I’ve grown as a singer.”

He has also lost weight. During his incessant touring, he gained 80 pounds, he said. He has since lost 65 of it. He cut out milk and soda. “You name it, I cut it out,” he said. “I used to drink a gallon and a half of milk a week. That’s a lot of fat grams. I just drink iced tea with Sweet & Low and water.”

In other news:

-Paula Abdul, who canceled on the NBC “Today” show April 25 performance, will be on now August 29, according to the New York Post.

-David Cook’s ailing brother Adam enjoyed his time at “Idol” and is now back in Terre Haute, Indiana. He has brain cancer and was able to take a private medical jet to California..

carmen.jpg

-Carmen Rasmussen wrote a first person piece about how she was not given equal treatment in terms of coaching as others during her season. Fascinating stuff.

I only received minimal vocal coaching from “American Idol” voice instructor Debra Byrd. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I actually received applicable, specific advice from her. Most of the time, it was, “You sound good. Just do your thing.” Or, “You need to work on your high notes.”

One day, as I was waiting downstairs for my private singing lesson, Clay Aiken was in the music room. I could hear him going over and over his song, dissecting it.

Finally, after about 30 minutes, the door opened. It was my turn. I walked in and sang my song about three times before being dismissed. Hardly the personal one-on-one attention Aiken had just received.

And this:

But perhaps more than wardrobe or vocal coaching, performance coaching was the one thing we needed the most — and received the least. Besides performing for my mom or in front of the mirror, I wasn’t given any outside perspective on what does and does not come across well on camera.

Some of the contestants this year have received negative comments on looking “overrehearsed” — but how would they know what looks good if no one takes the time to help them out?

-Brian Dunkleman finally admits he was wrong quitting “Idol” after season one. But he still comes off as sanctimonious in this TV Guide interview.

TVGuide.com: You know, I have to ask, what in the world made you quit American Idol?

Dunkleman: I’ve answered it so many times it’s curious to me why I keep getting asked — I wish I had gotten fired, it would be a hell of a lot easier to deal with. I don’t understand why people would think I would lie about it at this point. It was such a big mistake in judgment, it’s embarrassing. I was unhappy on the show, they treated the kids like [crap], I didn’t think it was cool. If I had known it was going to run for 70 years I would have sucked it up and become callous like the rest of them. I had a lot of great experiences on Idol, but I just have a deep philosophical opposition to what they do.

Good interview Rodney. Always enjoy hearing about former idols. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Carmen Rasmussen also country? I want to say she was, but honestly can’t remember. I can still picture her in my mind but not sure of her style.

Have a good week-end and i will be popping in & out.

I just talked to Rodney. You’ll find this very interesting.

Deirdre so we had four trolls all in one, and wait a minute… the racist comments from Ba’quitta were by the same person that was behind x? Can you say hypocrite? Of course, I am one who is willing to admit my mistakes: I was wrong when I stated that Toilet Boy was not x. Good call to those that made the connection.

And here people think I don’t have a life. Maybe I just need more persona’s.

JT…there just can’t be THAT many people who hate linny and me…Flats, maybe! :-)

We may not be done…there’s always laptops and work computers and home computers to harass people. But at least whoever it is will have to come up with some new names!

New personas! Good Idea. I think I’ll be ‘Desiree the Darling of the Desert’. In the meantime…I have to go cook a meal!

Have a good evening!

I can possibly understand the resentment toward flats, but to criticize others for not having the same opinion as their own is, well like I said before, like when junior high girls get into and argument and their friends have to choose whose side to be on.

By JTesla

April 18, 2008 7:51 PM | Link to this

Wait, a blond woman is banned and it is racist? Toilet Boy posts for months with no ban, yet after creating a hostile and offensive environment leading to the ban it is labeled as racist? Do you know what racism even is? The banned person in question goes on to make blatantly racist comments as boo’quetta and they are in some twisted way a defender of racial harmony? And didn’t someone else say Mission Accomplished once?

Rodney Ho, exonerated.

It’s a never ending saga ;)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

some people just don’t get it, i guess. what different rules? NO one in the history of the blog has used vulgar terms previously; if they HAD they would have been banned at that time. rtb chose to say something to Harmony that was WAY beyond decency. And NO, i was NOT the only person who complained to the AJC/Rodney. In that comment there was NO racial connotation involved. But because the SAME person posting as at least 4 different entities crossing racial lines got banned, somehow it became racially motivated? Rodney did not know WHO all would be caught in the ban except for rtb.. when IT compared IPs, the IP was found to link to those 4 names over the last few days.

no one got outed except the author… and who that is doesn’t really matter. anyone who can read and has a modicum of common sense can see what is going on. and it AIN’T Rodney Ho being racist, LOLOLOL!!!

Wrongo buster! Flats was annoying, obnoxious and occasionally could be accused of racism. he called people names…he made their lives miserable BUT he NEVER verbally, sexually assaulted anyone on this blog. Not once..not ever! Read the rules kiddo and maybe you’ll FINALLY understand why he was never banned but Toilet Boy..who went well beyond the code for the ajc blogs today WAS! Unfortunately, x and princess and Boo’quetta had to go with him.

How many more computers have you got honey because you’ll have to be a little more careful with your vulgarities NEXT TIME!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Rodney, for delousing the blog! I don’t understand some people - talk about bitter!!

I caught the Ellen segment with Michael this afternoon. He’s so hunky, and as Simon said, a good guy. Sings It’s All Wrong and, again, “it’s all right”.

Did anyone see the Idol Wrap segment on this week’s show? The guest was the stylist for the show talking about how they help the contestants define and refine their personal style. He said David C is the easiest to dress, and David A has been more of a challenge. He knows what he isn’t, but not who he is. Said the pants this week were not leather, just has a shine on camera. They’ve tried to keep him young because of his tween fan base, but the response to the look this week has been positive so they are going to try to up his style age/image in the future. He said Syesha has defined her diva style, so we will see more of the glam for her. He agreed Kristy had nailed the country look after some experimenting. And he loves Carly’s distinctive tats. Wants to continue to glamorize her. He said they had finally got Jason out of jeans and boat shoes into Paul Smith shoes (who’s Paul Smith?)and using jean jackets or shirts with slacks. Interestingly, few comments on Brooke. Just a mention of the label for the dress this week. Wouldn’t it be a blast to have a stylist help you shop??

Harm, in times past there were some issues that separated the “regulars” on this blog. For the most part everyone has shown class and have agreed to disagree and have moved on. There are some self-titled “exiles” that drop by from time to time that are welcomed as if they never left. But there has been one that hasn’t been able to move on with his life and get over it. When he realized that his foolishness had no effect on the people that he intended he lashed out at others.

Todays festivities were not enough for me,they have continued into the night. I got a call from my daughter, telling me that my son-in-law was involved in a courtroom brawl late this afternoon, resulting in a broken ankle that is going to require surgery. Needless to say ,he is not a happy camper.

Was it really worth jail time and being charged with a felony?

I think anger management therapy is going to be needed in addition to what he has already gotten.

The bad thing for my son in law is that its the same foot that accidently got run over by a lawnmower two years ago, resulting in all the bones in that foot being broken and barely escaping the loss of a couple of toes, but thats another story.

April 19, 2008 1:10 AM | Link to this

why is it when i want the nyquil to knock me out, it hypes me up, and vice versa?

Song, some of the offending thread was actually deleted, starting about 2:13, when redneck toilet boy said something quite vulgar to Harmony… at least 3 people complained by email to Rodney and i for one requested the offending remark be removed, don’t know if anyone else did. The AJC technical person in charge of the blogs felt that the comment warranted a ban of the offender’s IPL, so that they cannot post on AJC blogs. Rodney then found out that the offender was posting under at least 4 names during the last 2-3 days (x, princess, redneck toilet boy, and boo’quetta)

OMG Harmony, sorry to hear about your son in law. Hope his ankle heals nicely. Last year when my nephew was arresting a subspect in Pine Mountain GA, he was attach by the sub and seriously injured. Ending up having 2 surgeries and now can not go back to police work due to the injuries. People just don’t understand that you should never attack a police officer. Several years ago, one of my cousins, who was on foot with his canine, was shot and killed just because he was in uniform. He never had a chance to defend his self.

Anyway, I send best wishes for a speedy recovery for your son in law.

Sorry Linny and Harmony, I fell asleep last night. Thanks for filling me in. Wow, so much drama for a Friday afternoon.

Can I assume it was completely not related to Idol? I’d hate to think the ouster of KLC caused so much venom to be unleashed.

It seems everyone has except YoDaddy.

What an idiot. Posting under at least 4 different names. This fool was being a raciest under one name and then calling others raciest under a different name. Like I said in a post weeks ago, I am an elderly black woman. Myself as well as others that were subject to real racism during the 60’s and 70’s, often wonder how easily the term can be thrown around.

Any term that is used as freely and as often as raciest is today loses a lot of its meaning and effect.

Just My Opinion

KPH…I’m willing! :-)

Songluvr..no, not related to Idol..just someone who feels they have a score to settle.

D, it is amazing how immature some poor souls are!

So, I tried to go back and read it all to get caught up, but I can’t find it. Can you or someone tell me exactly which blog all the mess was on? Thx.

What has transpired in the past is dead and buried. We can only move forward from now on, right? As you say KPH, let bygones be bygones.

This is a new day, so all new things are happening.

SharonD…thank you for your kind thoughts. I was in school in the 50’s and 60’s in Missouri…I remember very clearly what racism is! I may have witnessed it from the ‘safe side’ but it made an indelible impression on me.

I truly hope this is over and done with for good now!

Moving on…

Rodney you took too long. I went over to mj’s and watched Michael Johns on Ellen…….Songluvr, can you spare a smoke? :-)

LOL!!!! girls girls girls (and KPH too) (btw, K, thanks for the sun song. that was indeed lovely! but um… now i can’t get the melody out of my head…. ohhh what was it we used to call that… ear[something] … anyway…. good think i like the song, LOL!)

And i second D’s regret that so many new and innocent (well at least as far as this blog goes, lol) folks got dragged into something ugly. We’ve tried so hard just to be us and let others be them … and all are still welcome here unless they want to cause problems, LOL! and we even tolerate obnoxious, just to be fair to everyone! right gang?

right!

yeah…. now i gotta go scope out MJ’s place, i guess, LOL!

D - I hear ya. I got to go to mj’s myself!

JT hasn’t posted in over 12 hours. I’m beginning to get a little worried. Maybe someone should check on him.

SharonD, I too remember what it was like growing up in the 50 & 60’s. Although I am white, I can still see scenes that I prefer to forget. Scenes that were directed to the Blacks by the KKK and white people. I bet half the people that uses the word racism does not fully understand the true meaning of it.Okay enough on that subject.

I hope by sometime tomorrow I can put some songs together for the idols that I think would be good for each one to do Tuesday. If I do, I will post them and see if anyone agrees with my picks.

WE: not only hasn’t TJ posted lately, neither has flats or harmony. Maybe they all are just resting and saving up their comments.

Huh? What? Of course I’m here. 24/7 don’t let anyone say any different!

So how did MJ do on Ellen? Did he dance? I think the chances of me watching it are slim to none so I’ll take the ladies word for how he did.

JT…Michael wore Ellen’s underwear, which was enough all by itself but…he sang, too! (uh, before this gets weird, Ellen has a line of underwear which she gives all her guests…he showed the waistband of his gift.)

I would really hope the underwear was CLEAN!!!!!!! Yucky poo, it sure had better been clean. Just kidding. You know it was and no one else had the undies on.

Wished I had been able to have seen her show. Usually Ellen is pretty good, what few times I have seen it. I heard that KLC is scheduled to be on Live with Regis and Kelly next week. Not sure what day. If i can find out, I will post it.

Hello, I’m back! I took advantage of the rain free saturday to do the much needed yard work , then of course had to check on the son in law(won’t know what they are going to do about his foot until Monday).

Menana, this police work is only a step in his career, he is going to get into the FBI or CIA later, he has to have some field experience first though, very intelligent with a good head on his shoulders, but you still worry!

Deirdre, there is no reason for you to apologize to me , the other party that wants to continue all of this is the only one that needs to apologize,to everyone on this blog.

Sorry that I forgot to tell you all that JT was helping with the yardwork today, I should not have taken him away from the blog for so long, didn’t mean to make you worry.

Hmmm, very devious what they are doing behind the scenes at American Idol according to Carmen Rasmussen. As the immortal Daxflame would say, “Oh what a tangled web we weave when we try to lie!” For anyone who is interested there are more good American Idol and music articles here http://jviz.blogspot.com

Good Afternoon fellow Bloggers!!!!!!

Glad to see that JT, Harm and Flats are posting again, as well as others.

Got my choices for Tuesday night and thought I would share them with ya’ll.

Jason: Any Dream Will Do

David A: All I Ask of You

David C: Sunset Blvd or Close Every Door. I lean more toward the latter choice.

Carly: As If We Never Said Goodbye

Syesha: With One Love

Brooke: Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again or Memory. Again leaner toward the latter one.

I didn’t choose Don’t Cry for me Argentina for anyone because I don’t think any of them (girls) could do it justice. Unless Carly stepped it up and decided to do it.

I am probably way off base on my choices but if any of you have any opinions, please share with me. I would like to hear your comments and your choices.

Gotta go finish cooking dinner but will be back later.

ADIOS Amigos and Senoritas. OMG, maybe one of them will do Argentina.

By JTesla

April 20, 2008 2:31 PM | Link to this

Good Afternoon Menana.

The only thing I know about these songs is that Don’t Cry for me Argentina won’t be done. KLC was going to do that one if she hadn’t been given the boot. Otherwise I don’t know any of them, not a single song. It might be a long night for me Tuesday. I guess all I will have to look forward to this week is the thought of Kristy wearing Ellen’s underwear.

By Deirdre

April 20, 2008 3:10 PM | Link to this

JT…LOL!!!

I have a few guesses for the girls.

Brooke would do well with I Don’t Know How To Love Him…from Jesus Christ Superstar.

Either Syesha or Carly will pick Memories from Cats.

By Menana

April 20, 2008 4:08 PM | Link to this

JT and D: Thanks for ya’lls input. I do believe that Tuesday’s show will be quite interesting.

I was watching the CMT awards and one of the stars that was being interviewed was Nanomi Judd and she said that when Archie was on Star Search she was a judge and that daddy Archie was a total jerk. Said they had a rough time with him. So I guess all that we have heard about him is the absolute truth. Glad I don’t have a dad like that. You can’t help but kinda feel sorry for Archie.

Sorry, Menana that I don’t have any input for you on your song choices, I’m not familiar with alot of the songs. If I heard them I would possibly reconize them.

Harm: That’s okay. Alot of people may not be familiar with the songs by Weber. I had to do some research myself on them. I like musicals abd broadway, so I am just a little familiar with some of them.

I think it was a mistake for the american idol peoples to let the public comment on the pictures on americanidol.com

people say the most ridiculous things and it is so distracting and mean.

ok one reason david a. is getting annoying to me is because people comment his pics in behind the scenes NON-STOP! and they all say the same thing!

and when he is not in a picture, they ask where he is.

when kristy lee cook is in a pic with .. well basically anyone they tell her to get out. she may not be great but why say that?

when there is a pic w/ KLC and david a. and she is standing in his way or blocking him in any way they tell her to get out of the way. exact quote: Kristy, how dare you stand in front of lil David!

i saw a comment that said syesha seems fake b/c she is taking advantage of her free clothes and hair — why? — b/c hers are sometimes fancier than others !!!! LMAO people have no life… i tell ya

what else… oh one more main thing. There will be a picture of say KLC or Chikezie or Amanda and there will be someone like david or jason in the back and people will comment only on how “cute” jason looks walking…

i’m sorry people it just annoys me i thought i’d throw that out there.
