4/15: Top 7 Idol performance night: Mariah Carey!

We knew it. Ballad hell. That’s what we got courtesy of Mariah Carey, the theme and the mentor. How about this timing? Her latest album comes out today, too! What a coincidence!

Nobody did dreadfully. David Cook lifted his game, boldly grunging where grunge has never been. David Archuleta was in his comfort zone, did his usual emoting. Kristy Lee Cook is still keeping herself alive with smart song choices. Syesha was, as usual, solid but is solid good enough? Carly didn’t quite hit the heights and will be in trouble again. Brooke is in that red zone as well, totally out of her element. Jason’s fans will love him and he was in the pimp spot to boot so he’s fine.

Anyway—my rankings: 1- David Cook 2- Syesha 3- Kristy Lee 4- David A. 5- Jason Castro 6- Carly 7- Brooke

Bottom three? Syesha, Carly and Brooke. Who will go home? I think Carly has been skirting the edges and isn’t bringing it home. It’s time for the Irish gal to go back to San Diego. [I made those picks before checking your comments or Dialidol.com and I’m glad to see the bottom three at the moment are indeed Syesha, Carly and Brooke.]

Up first: David Archuleta (“When You Believe”) - This was apparently a minor hit with Whitney in 1998 that I don’t even remember from “The Prince of Egypt.” David’s wearing leather pants. I hope they don’t squeak while he walks. It’s your standard issue ballad and he did it well but man, I can’t stand this drudgery. And it has some sort of inspirational theme, right up his alley. Randy: “You can sing anything. That was the bomb.” Paula: “It must feel great for Mariah to hear your interpretation of the song.” Simon: “I would have bet $1 million you’d pick that song in advance. I thought that was very good. You set the benchmark.” B-plus

Carly Smithson (“Without You”) - She noted how boring it is now without Michael Johns around or “MJ” as she calls him. This was actually a cover song for Mariah, a top 3 hit in 1994, and made a major hit by Harry Nilsson in the early 1970s. She’s going into her lower registers to start this song and restrains herself until the end. She really tried to dial back the Angry Bunny From Outer Space look with mixed results. It was a solid vocal performance, not transcendent but not very good. Randy: “You have to trust your lower register. It was pretty good.” Paula: “I liked you shared some vocal restraint.” Simon: “Did you pull it off? No. I think you’re overthinking everything. I still think you’re wound up. It was an okay version.” B-plus

Syesha Mercado (“Vanishing”) - This was an album cut from Mariah’s first CD, a gospel-tinged ballad. Yes, another ballad. It’s going to be one of those nights. It was beautifully done. Controlled yet emotional, lovely. Randy: “I love how you go for it every week. You did a good job on it all thing considered. It’s hard to sing.” Paula: “This week, you’ve been extremely smart… You picked a song not many people know. Overall, tonight was unbelievably magical.” Simon: “Once again, technically, it was very good indeed. Having said that, I’m not sure I would have chosen a song not many people know about. You run a risk.” I agree with Simon that a relatively unknown song might hurt her. A-minus

Brooke White (“Hero”) - She missed her sister’s wedding this past Saturday. “Hero” was Mariah’s eighth number song in 1993-94, definitely one of her signature songs. Brooke hit a bad note to start but she smartly does a quiet, stripped-down version of the song. It’s just okay in coffee-house form. Not her best, not her worst. I almost wish she had slowed it down a bit more. It felt mildly rushed. Randy: “I liked the fact you brought the singer-songwriter thing. I was digging it until the bridge.” Paula: “Every ounce of you is totally authentic to who you are.” Simon: “I don’t think you had much choice but to do what you do. It was a bit like ordering a hamburger and only getting the bun. In other words, the vital ingredient, the meat. Your voice isn’t strong enough to carry that off.” (Brooke looks confused.) B

Kristy Lee Cook (“Forever”) - This was a middle-tier hit for “Mariah” in 1996, not one I know particularly well. But that’s wise so we as viewers lack a preconceived notion of this ballad. (Yes, another ballad! Nobody has dared take on “Dreamlover” or “Always Be My Baby”). Kristy Lee has been improving in recent weeks and the confidence is definitely there. She gives it a nice Faith Hill-style feel. (Notice they’ve stopped the front area crowd from waving their hands—thank God!). I enjoyed it. I’m jonesing for something more upbeat at this stage of the show but hey, she did her thang, as Randy might say. Randy: “I don’t think that was amazing… but I gotta tell you. You definitely stepping up toward the end. You hit that note at the end.” Paula: “You have this all worked out in your plans. I’m blown away.” Simon: “You didn’t give me chills. I think you managed with what you could. It was a little whiny at times. It wasn’t ever going to be advantage for you. It just wasn’t great.” A-minus/B-plus

David Cook (“Always Be My Baby”) - Oh, well. David is daring to take on one of Mariah’s more ebullient songs, one of my favorites from 1996. He does his little grunge-rock turn on yet another pop song, Chad Kroeger style. It’s actually quite captivating though the female backup singers really is a strange addition given the way he sang it. And we know he didn’t “borrow” that arrangement from Chris Cornell off YouTube. Randy: “You are ready to make an album. I’d never stood up. That was the most brilliant performance yet.” Paula: “You’re it.” Simon: “It was like coming out of karaoke hell into a breath of fresh air because that was original. It was daring. It stood out by a mile. This is the sign of great potential artist. Someone who takes risks. Congratulations.” A (With his sick brother in the audience, he’s in tears.)

Pimp spot! Jason Castro (“I Don’t Wanna Cry”) - How will he Jack Johnson this Spanish-tinged No. 1 ballad from her early days? Ick. She touched his dreads! This was not one of those tunes I particularly liked which makes it hard for me to enjoy his rendition. He did alright. It was no “Hallelujah.” Randy: “I felt like I was at a weird beach luau and someone was playing music in the distance.” Paula: “If I was at that luau, I’d listen all night long.” Simon: “I have to agree with Paula. It identified with you. It was a cool version. The guys won the night.” B-plus

Like I keep saying, it’s business! They are in the business of music. The contestants need to start thinking the same thing when they pick songs and clothes. Do they want a career or do they want to make coffee for the rest of their lives with people occasionally saying, “say, didn’t I see you on some TV show years ago?”

SPOILER ALERT

The following comes from a blogger on mj’s who watched the rehearsal.

* David Archuleta - “When You Believe” - Beautiful, gorgeous * Carly Smithson - “Without You” - Blue dress, black stockings, cleavage. Her tats are covered. She was good. * Syesha Mercado - “Vanishing” - Wearing gold lame, very dressed up. Her performance was “Just OK” * Brooke White - “Hero” - She played the piano. She was just OK. * Kristy Lee Cook - “Forever” - Really good. Looked beautiful. Maybe the best girl of the night. * David Cook - “Always Be My Baby” - Pretty good. Song had a great finish. Everyone loved him. * Jason Castro - “I Don’t Wanna Cry” - Was OK. Had trouble with the complicated melody.

David Cook with “Always be my Baby”? That should be interesting. Brooke playing the piano, that is the real shocker, oh wait it isn’t.

I hope that David A. is going first, but it won’t hurt him at all when it comes to voting. Might actually be a good week for him song wise.

Idol, Schmydol.

Where I come from a regular slander is good for a black eye! Only God know, why? But on American Idol, Simon getting the hook sounds so exciting. Nobody knows why? Maybe its in their sliding scale to win monopoly. People go through all the changes they go thru for what ever reason. But on American idol I noticed a perfectly great artist insulted beyond my wildest dreams. The vocalist named Patrick who is African American, sang well. He looked great in a black custom built suit. Then dressed in his yard clothes, this Simon (who is a judge) character comes on insulting this contestant. Then the next contestant who is white singing a song recorded by a black man is getting complimented. For his school boy outfit. Just because he is related to two presidents doesn’t have a damn thing to do with a talent contest, mister. This show has a certain discourse for straight laced slander. Now, if you crindge after a bold face critic. One with zero talent. Stick with shows that are geared toward ones own ethnic orientation. Because nobody really knows what causes these character clashes with Simon? Is he blyme or what? It could be the day of the month. But theres one thing for sure and its simply this. With Simon in, the show sucks. Its not just Patrick’s black suit (that seems O.K.) Without a a pale faced flop. As in flop on the staff of American Idol. The show may have a chance. What ever the reason its another season for foolery, flack overs and high jinkx .Move over Imus. The wack wagon is on another roll. With Simon. Like Simon, my thumb is down and my nose is up! Somebody ought to cancel the show completely, for slander. Simon, get off. Theres no secret, its called overconfidence and nobody likes a hypo-cra-tic dogg. See Simon, Simon met a pieman on the way to the unemployment office. With no measurable talent. They had mercy that day and gave Simon this job on a talent show. Out of work critics gotta eat too, you know. Mariah can’t help IDOL there.

I just don’t understand why they don’t like Carly because she has outsung everyone so far and she looked fantastic. The only thing I can think of is that they truly don’t like her. David A. was very good, Syesha was very good, Brook sucked canal water, and Kristy Lee was … well … she was Kristy and will undoubtedly hang on again. I just am at a loss.

OK…I agree with Simon. The guys won the night - which is strange since it was Mariah night. I think the bottom 3 will be any of the girls. I don’t think Syesha should be one of them, but I fear that Kristy Lee will win in the popular vote. I guess we’ll see, won’t we? I think Carly (& I’ve liked her from the beginning) and Brooke are in major trouble. Could be either one of them going home tomorrow night.

Disappointed with Simon’s biasedness (word?).

  1. David Archuleta- Thought it was excellent, ‘cept I wasn’t as enthusiastic as Simon. Top 6 spot deserved.

  2. Carly Smithson- I too was excited for it, but it wasn’t nearly as good as I’d thought it’d be.

  3. Syesha Mercado- Was Fantastic! Simon ruined it once again. I thought she did good, but she will go :(.

  4. Brooke White- Totally forgettable.

  5. Kristy Lee Cook- I’m sorry.. I don’t get it guys. Why does everyone like her so much.. she does sound good, but not good enough.

  6. David Cook- Beginning was horrible, then great.

  7. Jason Castro- Simon you biased bitch. He was HORRIBLE! Another one I just do not get, this season is heading for vocal blunder.

I see MCR felt the need to copy and paste himself…..I still don’t get it!

ONE: Michael Johns. I think Idol finally has one of those ‘moments’ we wait for…bluesy, sexy, haunting, straight from the heart…. * * * * What!!!!!??? OK, so I have a vivid imagination and a rich fantasy life! Live with it!

One: David Cook

Two: Carly

Three: Kristy Lee

Four: Archie

Five: Syesha

Six: Jason

Seven: Brooke

No comment…wasn’t very happy with any of them.

David Cook is awesome and Dreg Boy also stunk. If you listen to him without looking at him, he is worse than most of the kareoke singers I’ve ever heard. Don’t get his appeal either. The night belongs to Cook and I’m afraid because of the judges’ panning of Carly, she will be leaving tomorrow. I can’t imagine, however, that someone in the industry won’t pick her up. Kristy Lee will find a good home in Country but won’t ever rise to the level of Carrie. David A. will definitely be around for a long time and may reach a huge level because of his very precocious talent. Syesha may get a record deal but will probably do more with her acting, and Brook was horrible tonight and deserves to be the one to go but she won’t. Really unfair, but then there is nothing fair about the music business.

This week there were four outstanding performances and three mediocre performances.

  1. David Cook - Always Be My Baby - two words, ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! Put this on a single and release it tomorrow and it will be at number one next week. This song WILL be on David’s first album. BANK IT!

  2. Kristy Lee Cook - Forever - OK, I will admit this is going to be great to the country fans, and panned by the Kristy haters. Well I am a Country fan, and I will flat out tell you this, Listen to this on Youtube or I-tunes and CLOSE YOUR EYES, and come back here and tell me you do not hear Patsy Cline. You will not be able too. This was awesome.

  3. David Archuletta - When You Believe - Monchichi picked the perfect song for his voice and delivered a flawless performance. I may have liked the Cooks better, but David did nothing to remove himself from front runner status. This was excellent.

  4. Jason Castro - I Don’t Wanna Cry - Simon was dead on on this, ok Vocal but the whole thing together was just COOL! No matter what any othe guys think though I garauntee Jason is safe. I will let my soon to be 50 wife say it in her words “If I was 18 Jason would have my panties”. I can’t top that.

  5. Brooke White - Hero - I love Brooke’s voice and the whole Carly Simon/Carole King thing she has going, and she did nothing to change that tonight. That said, this was just OK, it was sweet but not in the league of the other four.

  6. Syesha Mercado - Vanishing - I thought the first half was very good, and then I thought Syesha totally lost it when she tried to go big. The runs were all over the place. She has a beautiful soft voice, but I do not like her when she goes big.

  7. Carly Smithson - Without You - This was just a mess for me. She sounded like she was growling during the early part of the song, and then my dogs started howling and glass started cracking when she got into the screech part of the song. By far Carly’s worst performance of the year.

I see no way in the world that the bottom three is not Brooke, Syesha and Carly; and I think Carly’s run on the show is over.

DiaLidol is incredibly slow, but i’m so mad… the underration on this slow is also incredible

By Negativo

April 15, 2008 9:35 PM | Link to this

Neg’s take:

1. David Cook: Welcome back to the top, David. Mariah hit it right on the head when she said it was a haunting version that she’d want to listen to herself. He was a star again, and it appears that last week’s disaster humbled and improved him as a performer.

2. Kristy Lee: All I can say is WOW! Simon and Randy are deaf if they couldn’t hear how good she was. Mariah had chills for a reason. This girl was so good it made me start to believe that she is more than just top 5 material, she’s top 3.

3. Sayesha: For once, she did not try and over sing a big song. She did an absolutely stunning vocal job and deserved much better from the judges than she got.

4. Carly: Huge drop off from 3rd to 4th tonight. Carly had a brilliant beginning to her song, but once again oversang her range by the end. Comparing her version to Kelly’s from season one was very telling about how short she comes vocally to the top singers. Check it out on Utube if you want to see for yourself the difference.

5. Brooke: She was so nervous she was visibly shaking during her performance. Yes she was OK singing, but that song needed more range than she has to offer. Another annoying interruption of Randy during the comments will not help her, either.

6. Archuletta: You know what I’ve realized about DA? He has a very limited vocal. Yes, he’s got very good pitch, but he’s too breathy and monotonous vocally. I can’t see why he’s being pimped by the judges for giving just average performances that most people would never listen to in their cars.

7. Castro: Pathetic lullabying once again. That whispering sensitivity routine is so irritating by now that I just feel like punching him and telling him to start acting like a man. He’s the worst by a mile.

Bottom 3: Brooke, Carly and Castro. Going home: Brooke.

David Cook pretty much owned everyone tonight. I thought Jason did a good job, but I dig the Jack Johnson vibe quite a bit in my regular listening habits. I’d hate to see Brooke go, as she’s the most genuine of the girls, but she might be out.

My wife and I both absolutely retch when hearing David Archuleta. She hit the nail on the head tonight. Archuleta is a young Michael Bolton. Who listens to that no-talent a** clown? Everything Archuleta sings sounds the exact same to me. No range, no variety, just a cute face that the mindless, teenage, lemming girls swoon over.

Only 2 of the guys won Simon. And one, possibly 2 girls.

Ratings:

1 + 2. Syesha Mercado- sorry guys, but she really was the best vocally tonight. David Cook- I’ll give best performance of the night. Syesha and David are tied.

  1. David Archuleta

  2. Carly Smithson

  3. Kristy Lee Cook

  4. Brooke White

  5. Jason Castro- HORRIBLE

Bottom 3 SHOULD be: Jason Castro, Kristy Lee Cook, Brooke White

Bottom 3 WILL be: Brooke, Syesha, Kristy/Carly

Who SHOULD go home: Any mix of Kristy, Jason, or Brooke.

Who WILL go home: Syesha :( though wrong decision.

I think Brooke has got the fans to pull her through, Kristy will just plain make it, Jason sucked, but is strangely pimped.

I’m a woman, Neg, and I don’t get Jason’s appeal either. I usually agree with Simon and this season have not on a regular basis. Jason is not listenable to me, and Brook is arrogant and a pain in the a**. If she cries one more time, I’m throwing a shoe at the TV.

Mike S., you and I have had our differences over the years, but this year we seem to be on diametrically different planes. Of course, that’s the fun of this. Deirdre and linny, love blogging with you again! Negativo, you have good ears.

Here we go:

1- David Cook. He can do a sensitive(-ish) love song, plus he can cry. He just gets better and better.

2,3,4- pretty much a 3-way tie between David A., Syesha, and Carly. Not ground-breaking, but VERY good by all three, and I must say Carly looked her best ever.

5- Brooke. Pleasant, pretty performance. Less annoying repartee than usual.

6- Jason. He has definitely raised his game the past few weeks, but come on. He will no doubt be huge on the coffee shop circuit, but American Idol?

7- Kristy Lee. It didn’t completely sukk, but one would hope the bar is higher than that to make the top 6.

I was pretty underwhelmed tonight until about halfway through David Cook’s rendition of “Always Be My Baby”. He clearly stole the show, but I did agree with Simon in that it seemed to start off a little rough, but as Randy would say, “he worked it out”.

My rankings:

1) David Cook - BY A LONG SHOT - I did not think anyone was close. Unfortunately, he will lose American Idol to the other David. Fortunately, that means he will probably have a better career - not winning American Idol. Another Randy-ism: “He’s the bomb”!

2) Jason Castro - Not a big fan, but I liked his performance. For once Simon and I are in sync on his performance.

3) David Archuleta - Technically, he is probably the most gifted singer on the show, and I do genuinely appreciate his aw-shucks attitude and humility. It does not appear to be an act. However, I am just not a fan of his style. At the time he sang, I did not think he was all that great, but until David Cook sang, he had done the best. The guys definitely beat the girls tonight.

4) Syesha Mercado - I’m not a fan, but I thought her performance was the best of the women tonight.

5) Kristy Lee Cook - I am a big fan, but I thought she missed a lot of notes tonight.

6) Brooke White - I am becoming less of a fan. She may be genuine and authentic, but for some reason I cannot seem to explain, she gets on my nerves when she interrupts the judges. I thought she missed more notes than Kristy Lee.

7) Carly Smithson - I’m afraid she will be going home. I like her voice (not the tattoos though), but tonight she just seemed off from the start. I thought her performance was the weakest.

My prediction for the bottom three - Carly, Kristy Lee, and Brooke. I think Carly will be going home this week.

The night wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I had something to laugh at: David A’s leather pants, Carly’s entire song, and Jason speaking. Then I had something to be angry with: Brooke singing, Brooke listening to critique, Brooke on the verge of tears. Finally, I had something to be happy about: Cook. Cook made me happy, hopefully this starts a trend where I can just say Cook and it won’t matter which one I’m speaking of. Cook is where it was at tonight.

Unfortunately I forgot about Syesha. She should stay longer than Carly, but if the rest of America forgot about her it may not bode well, and she doesn’t appear as vulnerable as Carly so she won’t get the sympathy vote.

Night Harmony, we’re running a risk of messing up our 100% prediction streak, but we need to make that call… someone will be leaving the show!

According to Dialidol, Brooke and Syesha are basically tied for the bottom two with Carly the third one. It seems that the people that don’t like Kristy don’t like country music.

David Cook-I thought he did a great job tonight and deserves the number one spot. I think someone fed him a bit of “humble pie” because I felt he was very arrogant and pompous at the beginning of the season. Kristy Lee-Who votes for Kristy,Justin? I vote for Kristy and she was awesome tonight. She has really stepped it up and had a strong night vocally. Yes, she was a bit “snarky” at the beginning, but she seems to have wised up. Syesha-Not a fan, but I’ve liked her the last two weeks. Brooke-Too cheeky and she rushed the song at the end tonight Carly-The song was just too big for her tonight. I thought she struggled thru it. David A.-I’m sick of him too Jason-Coffee House I bet Kristy knows that she is no Carrie, but she is really improving every week. No one thought that Kelli Pickler would be where she is now. She won three awards last night at the CMTs.

David Cook is by far the best of all of them. He’s alittle different and is a real showman - very comfortable on stage. BUT, as we know from past years, a lot of this is a popularity contest. I bet David A.’s father has David’s entire high school sitting on the phone for 2 hours every week!!!

Once again, my same yearly complaint and suggestion. Once it gets this far they should limit the calls to one per phone number. Then there’d be a much more accurate vote.

My own 73 year old mother sits on the phone for an hour voting, not only for her favorite, but for whoever she feels sorry for when that person gets bashed by the judges!

Unfortunately, I think Brooke or Carly will be going home tonight.

By Debbie

April 16, 2008 6:35 AM | Link to this

I NEVER vote for Kristy. I think she’s actually the most arrogant of the whole bunch. She’s definitely country, but doesn’t have that humble country attitude. She cute and all, but doesn’t have the stage presence that someone would need to really succeed.

Last week when Dolly Parton told her that her performance would make her mother proud - and her response was that she wasn’t trying to make her mother proud, but Dolly proud, came across as really arrogant to me. It might have been what she was thinking - which is fine - but it shouldn’t have been voiced.

By Idleblogger

Well, that explains it… on the phone for hours voting for the one she feels sorry for… no wonder duds such as Taylor Hicks have won in the past. WHY NOT VOTE FOR THE BEST SINGER??? What a novel idea that is….

Am I the only one that just cringe when I see David Cook? He just looks unclean to me like he needs a few baths. I don’t get it.

Carly needs a scrub also. I want her to go just so I don’t have to see her husband in the audience. That guy looks SCARY!!!

Jason, that guy is gorgeous. Not a great voice, but he has a beautiful face.

Brooke White, like her humbleness, but she was kinda horrible last night.

Kristy Lee is doing 100% better. She actually was good last night.

David Arch, ummmm he can’t sing, but he sounds the same on every song to me.

Syesha, pretty girl, but she definitely won’t win.

By sharon

April 16, 2008 7:13 AM | Link to this

My top three last night were Syesha, Jason and David Cook. I did not care for any of the others. I totally disagreed with Simon when he said Syesha choosing a song no one knew might hurt her. That was so dumb. My husband said that it seemed to him no matter what Syesha does the judges are going to criticize her. It is obvious to me that they are lukewarm towards the ladies this year because they want a male to win. David Archuletta is not all that. He is so boring, so is Brooke. How on earth could Randy fall all over himself over Archuletta but not like Jason.

Wow, lots of different reactions this morning. Here’s my 2 cents - I loved David Cook. He was always my 2nd favorite, runner up to MJ. I actually liked Jason C. I’m not a huge fan and, well, the hair (ICK) but I really liked his performance last night. Finally, believe it or not, I liked Brooke. She did rush it, but I did like her singing that song.

While David A sang pretty well, I just can’t get past the 12-year old persona, always looking as though he just did something wrong and is about to get into big trouble. (Does his father beat him?) I think Syesha did a nice job. I just don’t like Carly and I hope she is gone next. By the way, was that tattooed freak in the audience her husband. OMG - way worse than the dreds!

As for Kristy - I love country music but I can’t stand HER. Her performances are dull and boring. She can’t hold a light to Kellie Pickler’s voice or personality (whether you like the dumb blonde act or not) and I am not a Pickler fan either. Kristy’s personality is boring, despite her wise-a$$ comments to the judges which is about the only time she is animated. I can’t stand to watch her either - is she dancing or what?

My last question / comment. What is with Simon constantly stroking Paula, pulling her chair towards him, hand on the back of her chair, etc. He is starting to creep me out a little.

Sorry, Willie.

Ms Simon…didn’t you used to hang out with us on the blog a few years ago?

Sharon and Dawn…I think almost everybody picked David Cook in first place last night. He was head and shoulders better than anyone else.

Other than that, I really didn’t think anyone was very good last night. Carly has a great voice but doesn’t connect. Archie sings very well but it’s starting to all sound the same. Syesha is ok. Kristy was pretty good as long as I don’t look at her. Jason put me to sleep and Brooke was terrible!

Well, I went back and listened to all 7 performances with my eyes closed. I like to do this to imagine what the person would sound like on a record, and also to not let the visuals influence the sound I am hearing.

After doing this my ratings changed slightly.

I still feel David Cook, Kristy and David A were all outstanding. Listening a second time though I heard more of a Brenda Lee sound than a Patsy Cline sound from Kristy.

Jason, not quite as impressive the second time around. He has little range, and while pleasant enough, there was no meat to the performance. it was sort of like elevator music.

Syesha was about the same, she sounded absolutely fantastic the first half of the song, then she went big and I went BLECH!

Carly SOUNDED much better just listening, but just like Syesha as soon as she turned it up it sounded like shouting with no tone or pleasantness to it at all.

Brooke, Brooke, Brooke I was not pleased at all. Very shaky, and not good at all just listening to it. It is her vulnerability and likeability that draws you in when she is performing, but just listening without the visual was painful.

Still, it doesn’t change my bottom 3 of Brooke, Syesha, Carly. But it may be Brooke leaving instead of Carly, but I think any one of the three could be gone.

And I am still p** Michael Johns went before any of them. GRRRRRRRRR

Ditto, Mike on Michael Johns.

There are only 2 people who can win this year and both their names are David. This has been true since the beginning of the show. Carly had a shot but she’s just not popular enough. The ONLY chance that someone else would step it up enough to join and even overtake one of the Davids was Michael Johns. He was in the process when he was ousted. (I suspect sabotage from Archie’s dad! :-) ). Anyway, it will be a David and David finale…the only thing left to deal with is who gets ousted in what order!

1 David Cook - give this boy his finale song so he can start practicing. He is light years better than the rest. 2 - This is a hard one. I would have to say Syesha. 3- David Archuletta. I don’t like him too much and don’t think he is old enough to be here, but let’s face it, he can sing. 4 - KLC. Lordy, I hated typing her name so much I had to just do initials. She has definitely improved 100%. 5 - Carly. no comment. 6 - Island Boy. I just don’t get it. 7 - Brooke. That was her worse performance to date. She needed to just take a deep breath, and start over.

Mornin’ Shay, hope you’re doing well. I thought David Cook outshined them all; much as i hate to admit it, Simon pegged it with his comments. I think KLC has brought her game up, and HAS improved every week…after all, she really had nowhere to go (other than out) but UP, and she evidently chose UP. Sad to see Brooke so shaky, but i too worry about her state of mind/emotion. Sad. I love the singer-songwriter quiet peaceful stuff, and Jason COULD be there too, but just doesn’t connect enough for me. meh. I was pleasantly surprised that the night wasn’t a fit of mariah wannabeeees screeeeeeching their heads off striving for that note. But… well, i coulda—shoulda—just dvr’d and watched NCIS and DWTS results, then played it back sans commercials, instead of the other way around. my goof.

I’ve watched every season and Cook is the BEST I have ever seen on this show. It is amazing what he can do with ANY song. As with Daughtry, everybody else should be “also rans”.

I am sick of Archie. He’s young but that boyish immature response he has is really getting to me. He can sing and that can’t be taken away from him.

I am really impressed with how good Syesha is getting every week. Most won’t know “Vanishing” but she did a great job with the song. I hope it won’t hurt her.

mmmmmmmmmm….

ooo look at all those states covered in the predicted loser of geopredicitions on DialIdol!!!! and funniest part of all theyre from Syesha!

that is retarded i just thought i’d share that. so i guess it’s safe to say goodbye to her, and for the 4th week in a row, we will lose a strong vocalist. Chikezie, Ramiele, and Michael all had good vocals, just didn’t keep up to par.

So I’m just disappointed now.

And that means that at least one of either brooke, kristy, or jason will be in the top 4! Say what?! Didn’t LaKisha come in 4th? They are NOWHERE near as strong or good as her. That is why this was NOT the most talented season yet. there may be a lot of talent, but they are getting rid of all of it so fast and from the 5 seasons i have watched, this is turning into my 2nd to LAST favorite.

I agree with Rodney for the most part. No one was dreadful. But the only stand out performance was David C.

I wasn’t sure how that song was going to turn out, but right in the middle I was became entranced.

Justin, I guess it is all a matter of opinion in terms of what you like in music and vocals. I would say that this season is one of the strongest. Strong enough that… dare I say it… this season may turn out to be stronger than season 5. Yes, I know that is almost sacrilegious around here. What’s wrong with the brother?

Very dark hair is common in the southern part of Ireland. It’s the Spanish influence from way back in the Armada days….so her hair may be natural…..it’s a possibility…I’m just saying.

War Eagle…David Cook’s brother has cancer, and recently had a setback, which sent David’s blood pressure rising and landed him in the hospital to get it under control.

The brother was in the audience last night.

Question. If David A were to win this thang, what genre would he fit into? All of his songs sound morose. Wouldn’t be top 40 or country. Gospel? Everything is so inspirational. Not a bad thing, but come on, liven it up a bit.

Poll for Finale - Do the “DAVIDS” have it or do the “COOKS”? I just can’t see KLC being in the top 2!

I think that’s a great question and we’ve talked about it before. Where does Archie fit in the music industry?

Someone suggested a Josh Groban-like career but his voice isn’t THAT good.

Somebody else suggested Branson, where the older folk can listen to him and give him hugs.

I think he’ll look nice on the cover of Tiger Beat BUT…I can’t see him singing any songs that teens would be interested in listening to.

But Disney IS the obvious place he could go until he grows up a little.

If you ask me, he should have waited a couple of years before trying out for Idol. He may be 17 but he acts more like 12.

I think they should raise the minimum age requirement to 18. I think they should be out of high school before they go through this process.

Not to mention that they’re usually a little more mature by then.

All this “Gee, Golly, Gosh” gets old.

I want to see a COOK-OFF! KLC and DC finale, baby. She has that carnal, wild cat thing that guys just want to tear into. She may not be a graceful cupie doll like Carrie, but who cares. I like the rougher edge and think if she keeps upping her game with good song selection, strong vocals, and confident stage presence anything could happen.

Look, it’s obviously David Cook and then the rest, but she’s better than Jason, better than Brooke, better than Carly, better than Archuletta and better than Sayesha. Sorry ladies (and Justin), but she’s number two at this point.

Normal? what is normal? LOL!

I agree, D, Suzee, the biggest problem with Archie, although he DOES have a lovely singing voice, is that he’s too young. Just because you’ve won competitions since you were 7, 8, 9, 10 years old does NOT mean you are “ready for prime time” in the music industry. Take those adolescent wins and go somewhere, study, play, enjoy life for a few years, keep on singing FOR PLEASURE…. and THEN, if you still want to live a music-business life, get into the music business. David’s never apparently HAD a “real life” — he defends it as what “he wants” but… if you never know anything else, and if you listen to your parents/mentors/guardians/agents (all-in-one) and they tell you this is how it is supposed to be… why would you look for anything else? i pity the kid, because even if he DOES win, DOES make a hit album of some sort … what will he do then? “competitions” are over and the real-world Competition (Life) begins… with no tangible reward-goals at the end of 5 or 10 or 12 or 15 or 20 weeks… you MAY or may NOT “win” … and even if you win, there’s so much you have to sacrifice… is it really a win?

i agree, they’re just NOT mature enough.

And i’m sorry, but Atlanta has had much better (tho’ i did like her) competitors than AlexAndrea Huffington, so why does AH get a “day” (yesterday was her day)… just askin’, LOL. Jex and linny…you guys know I’ve been harping for YEARS about raising the age limit. 18 would be my absolute limit. Many teens are ill equipped to handle the pressure of this kind of show.

Carmen Rasmussen said something interesting about being a teen on Idol. She said that it took a few years before she felt confident enough to sing in public again. Whether you liked her or not, I think that’s very telling to the kind of experience teens have on a show like this.

I’m no fan of David A., but I don’t care what his age is. Heck I have been bashing his “awww shucks” routine since he did Imagine, but why does it matter how old he is? I’ve met too many people over the age of 21 who are extremely immature, and although this isn’t a singing competition his non-singing faults are not any worse than many of the other contestants. David C. is arrogant, Brooke is a mess, Carly is angry, KLC can’t move: is David A’s little boy antics really worse than anybody else’s defect?

JT…no they’re not but…he’s the ‘chosen one’ and we tend to rant about him more than the others because of it. We’ve a tendency not to want someone shoved down our throats(which WAS happening)so we look for the negatives.

There’s an ‘age of consent’ in this country and, IMO, until someone is old enough to legally sign his own paperwork, he shouldn’t be subjected to the harsh light of public criticism for something as personal as singing…now, if he robbed a bank, then shine that light on him!

By Negativo

April 16, 2008 12:44 PM | Link to this

JT, yes they are. His Mickey Mouse Club act may suck, but his monotonous singing also is terrible, as is his nauseating song selection. What’s good? Apparently he’s very cute to the tweener girls.

Then again, Castro is getting voted back every week strictly because of his adorable face, so there ya go.

Negativo, we are actually on a very similar page. I don’t think David A should be excluded because of his age, but I think he should have gotten the boot several weeks ago for the factors that you mentioned. I have a feeling that even at 18 David A is going to be an annoying Disney automaton.

By Suzee

April 16, 2008 1:11 PM | Link to this

Let’s not be too sure that David C will be in the final 2. A lot of us thought it would be MJ and DC in the final 2. We know how that turned out!

I think hosting the Disney Parade would be the perfect gig for The Virgin David when Idol ends. But, I guess he will go on tour with Idol either way. I’m sure Daddy will sign the permission slip - as long as he is allowed on the tour bus too.

Wanted to quickly ask my questions again. Was the tattooed guy in the audience last night really Carly’s husband? Suddenly HER tattoo doesn’t seem so bad. EWWWWW

Does anyone else think that Simon not being able to keep his hands off Paula is getting a little creepy?

Last night David A actually looked like he was painfully trying to keep the smile and golly gee routine in check. Honestly, when he was being critiqued he looked like he was constipated. It wasn’t until Ryan came over and in essence forced him to smile that he gave a giggle.

I was one of the first people on this blog to bash Archie for the little boy antics, I referred to it as a shtick and took some flak for that. However, I am not going to ignore the fact that he has reeled that behavior in. He obviously has been coached, or berated by dad and has done what he can to correct it. Now if only he can stop choosing garbage songs, and sing as if he has gotten the boys to drop then he will, in my mind, finally be worthy of being in the top 5.

DawnH, yes it was Carly’s husband. I think I remember Carly saying that he didn’t want to be on TV. I wonder if he thought it might hurt her chances. Luckily he has gotten over that fear.

Dawn…I’ve been talking about Simon and Paula for a long time. I blame Paula’s distraction and inability to concentrate on the fact that Simon will NOT leave her alone. Not only is it creepy…it’s like Simon is even more of a 12 year old than Archie is!

And yes, that was Carly’s hubby.

I have been so busy today that I haven’t had time to check in on my AI blog family… I did watch last night, but did not Tivo (too many conflicts), and I missed Archie and Carly perform. But when I heard the playbacks at the end of the show - I wasn’t too upset with this. Is it just me, or does Carly seem to be straining? Like it is difficult for her to belt some of that out? Maybe you should just try to go for that soft sound to let us hear your real voice? I do not like Archie. And I agree that you should graduate highschool before you should be allowed into this kinda arena. But others have handled it fine. Look at Miley Cyrus, she is 15 and is more mature than this kid, by far. Is he really 17? The lip licking, the shy act, the aw shucks - come on now, they called people out on this before, why are they sparing him?

Brooke was awful last night. Can she not sing without the piano? It was so fast, so shaky and so outta key! I am tired of her crying and tired of her talking over the judges, over Ryan, just shut up already!

Syesha has a good voice, she just does not stand out amongst the crowd. There really is nothing unusual about her, nothing that makes you take a second look, a second listen and go “wow”.

I liked Carly’s softer look and voice(for part of the song), but then they ruined it by showing her freaky husband. I just don’t get Jason. I don’t think he has much talent and charisma at all. Brooke is still around because she is sweet and teary-eyed most of the time. Mostly I am just missing Michael. I wonder if the shock and outrage over his leaving will work in his favor. I am just hoping that the AI exposure will give Michael Johns a better career than he would have had. He has a great voice with awesome potential. He seems like a really nice guy who got a raw deal from AI. He was very popular when he was here in Atlanta. I wish him well. I don’t think the closeness of the score on dialidol matters all that much, keeping in mind that Michael Johns not only scored higher than David Cook last week on dialidol but substantially higher than both Syesha and Carly. While dialidol might give us an idea of who is going home, the specific scores don’t seem to matter.

By Chazz

April 16, 2008 5:44 PM | Link to this

Am I the only one that thinks David A. is just a one trick pony?????

David Cook is nothing more than a scam artist, ripping off people’s versions of songs and pretending it’s his until elimination night..he’s got a lot of people fooled!

Syesha is making each song her own and she gets slammed for it, but David A does the same thing (he’s nothing more than a Junior version of Taylor Hicks , and we all know what happened to him!)

By Deirdre

April 16, 2008 5:52 PM | Link to this

Chazz….if you have spent anytime reading what people say here, you’d know you’re not the only one.

As for David Cook…3 of the songs he has sung have been arranged by other people for whom credit was given. 2 arrangers were given credit on performance night and the third was credited on results night. Are you watching the show or are you only hearing what you want to hear?

By NW Lady

That’s just it. MJ was in the bottom three (yellow) with Syesha and Carly last week which means any one of them could go home based on MOE. But, I do agree, Dialidol is not affiliated with Fox and the margin of error compared with the actual AI tally is basically the end result. Diedra, you’re right, I’ve noticed the specific scores don’t seem to matter. Confusing??

According to dialidol last week the bottom three were Syesha, Carly and David Cook…not MJ….he was 4th from the bottom. They did list MJ as ‘in danger’ however. So basically…anyone who is in the yellow zone on dialidol could go home, not necessarily the bottom person.

Actually…dialidol rarely gets the bottom 3 completely right.

I guess I wasn’t really clear. I didn’t mean that the very last person listed on Dialidol would go home. What I was trying to say was that everyone in yellow was in danger and could go home. I wasn’t sure where MJ was in line, but I knew that he was in the yellow zone. Yeah, I know, the AI tally is the REAL results. It’s fun to check out Dialidol though..it does give a ballpark result. Usually the ones in green ARE safe.

I am quite tired of American Idol being a popularity contest for the teeny-boppers in the crowd, furiously calling in their votes for their heart-throbs. Idol needs to change the format so true talent is rewarded. While not a Carly fan, I was surprised to see her go. Jason is a prime example of the popularity contest. 13-year-old girls are voting for him because he has long eyelashes. Come on girls, he’s effeminate (look it up), whispery, completely lacking in personality and, especially, talent.

We use the idol show as great time to spend with our family. If we’re not home - we DVR it to watch later.
