4/10: A new measurement tool? Stamps! And Idol Gives Back ratings

Rather than sandwich Josh Gracin’s interview in between Idol Gives Back and the results show blog entries, I’ll hold off until tomorrow.

syesha top 8.jpg

But I got an interesting email from TiVo that predicts Syesha Mercado (above) is a goner tonight based on how many times a particular performance was watched in time-shifted form. Here’s the press release:

TiVo Inc. announced today a prediction of the “American Idol” contestant most likely to be voted off the show in this week’s eliminations. For past four weeks, TiVo has been using its second-by-second audience measurement to determine which performers had the highest and lowest viewership. It turns out, this information, especially among viewers who are watching on a timeshifted basis, is highly predictive of which contestant will be voted off. Viewers tend to rewind and watch their favorite performances multiple times, while fast-forwarding through the ones they don’t like. These viewing preferences correlate with voting patterns (for each week TiVo has measured). As always, the viewing information was collected in strict accordance to TiVo’s privacy policy, which uses a sample of completely anonymous data from 20,000 random anonymous subscribers, analyzed only in on an aggregated basis.

David Archuleta ranked in the highest audience numbers during his performance.

Syesha Mercado was the lowest on the totem pole this week, with the fewest viewers sticking around for her performance. For the past 4 weeks running, the person with the lowest viewership as recorded by TiVo subscribers has been voted to go home.

Intriguing!

Paula Abdul on Q100 today said she’s really worried for Carly Smithson, who is clearly in the danger zone, too. Some folks think Brooke might join them and make it an all-female bottom three but could Michael Johns be in trouble, too?

-Usually postage stamps only feature dead people but Idol has convinced the U.S. Postal Service, desperate for attention, to sell “Idol” stamps with “Idol” winners. According to USA Today,, if the limited edition stamps sell out, that would be $7 million for “Idol Gives Back.”

The stamps are not being sold in post offices. They’re available online only at PhotoStamps or linked via AmericanIdol.com, a product of Stamps.com, which offers USPS-approved, Internet-based postage services.

-“Idol Gives Back” pulled in only about 70% of the regular audience, not a surprise. It averaged 17.6 million from 8 to 10 p.m. based on preliminary numbers. Last year, the show pulled in 26 million viewers but that was because there was a pretense of a results show.

Thanks for the update RH. Not surprising that less people watched the show last night. It had it’s good parts as well as bad.

Hopefully, on the new thread, posters will be less tense.

Last night’s Idol Gives Back was one of the most self-congratulatory and smug “television events” we’ve had to sit though to date. Here’s a funny link about how Most of Us viewed it:

Glad I missed blogging this morning. Hello Everyone. Neg, why did you have to go and make it harder for us females to resist you?

Harmony must be pyschic!!!

Yes, My computer has been plugged in again and I’m sitting in a room with beautiful hardwood floors. The workers are still here, tiling my kitchen at the moment.

I watched maybe a total of 10 minutes of IGB last night…snooze fest at best.

Looking forward to the eliminations tonight. I won’t be on much this afternoon because there’s just too much happening at my house that requires my attention but…I will be back! :-)

Neg will be BBQing delmonico steaks tonight. Peppers, onions, mushrooms, corn, watermellon, and, of course, lots of cold beer. That should put the Negster in the right mindset for playoff hockey and elimination Thursday, eh?

Neg: Can I have my steak without mushrooms, please?

Linny: Hope the mold man can get rid of all the mold for you. That is some nasty stuff.

Justin I have wondered the same thing myself. I think Linny and D have talked to Rodney and there is a reason I just don’t know what it is.

By ,,,=^..^=,,, from home

April 10, 2008 6:37 PM | Link to this

Justin - while that blog link still exists, there is no guaranty of how long it will remain; newcomers to the AJC blogs wouldn’t have that link from the ‘main page’ of the online paper, and so, while we COULD use it, it would be tentative at best. The vendor was not renewed — it was a test, experiment, or whatever, apparently — and while they’ve not removed the actual url, we were told it was best NOT to use it by Rodney. Rodney was told that a new ‘interactive chat’ vendor would be chosen sometime this year; apparently there’s no hurry in the minds of the AJC decision-maker(s) on that topic. I’m not sure why the link still pulls up Rodney’s latest Blog… i may send him an email asking that question just to satisfy my own curiosity. We used to have registered logins/handles so that no one could use our exact name; i think that function IS disabled, i haven’t tried to register, but i know my old handle on the interactive blog is no longer ‘active’, and i had to put in a name and email addy to post there. it did let me post, but anyone i suppose could also post there using my name. so……

hope that helps!

uh ok…?

so about that TiVo thing… if it is true i don’t want to hear about it!! but then … how can they do it seriously. A lot of people don’t have TiVo, and that doesn’t tell who is getting votes… so i just don’t get it.

yeah…i’m just thinking up excuses cuz i want syesha to stay lol. doubt it’ll happen though.

I think it is safe to say that safety guarantees go to KLC (damn), and both davids.

Brooke or Michael, probably Michael, may be in the bottom, but will be sent back before they know it.

Syesha and Carly will be in the bottom, Carly for “scaring” purposes, and syesha leaving. oh well… we try :(

thing that gets me is… Haley Scarnato also came in 8th.. and though I liked her last year, she’s no where near Syesha’s skills.

I guess the only hope I have is them rigging it because it’d be awkward to have both afro girls go home in 8th place (syesha & nadia)

Yeah Linny make up your mind do you want to post as Linny, Justin, War Eagle, or JTesla tonight? You’re confusing me.

By Justin

April 10, 2008 7:37 PM | Link to this

and look Jason’s so darn forgettable I forgot to include him

he is also guaranteed safety and they really need to switch up the results this time…

they should be different. i like them being told from the couches rather than them coming out from backstage each week and sittin in the seats—- gets boring & is not suspensful, cuz when it comes down to 3 people, and one being left for bottom 3 and they call out 2 people at the end one being in that bottom, well the person before them obviously is safe…

Justin the TiVo thing, and the information they can pull up, is a little spooky. I’m sure it is just one more way way to poll a cross section of America as to their tastes, but it is by no means fool proof.
