4/9: Idol Gives Back is back

abc_idol_gives_080407_mn.jpg

Reese Witherspoon and Brad Pitt participate in “Idol Gives Back,” most of which was taped Sunday but aired Wednesday. CREDIT: AP

Well, “Idol Gives Back” has started. I’m not sure how much live stuff will appear, if at all. So far, as of 7:45 a.m., it’s all the taped stuff from the Kodak Theater Sunday. I have heard nothing since about bringing back some of the rejected “Idol” folks for a spot on the tour. I can’t see that happening and certainly not tonight. Kinda off message, eh?

The opener indeed featured the top 8 singing “Don’t Stop the Music” by Rihanna with several of the “So You Think You Can Dance” singers. Ryan Seacrest makes some embarrassing dance steps himself.

The taped pleas include Jimmy Johnson, George Lopez, Kylie Mingoue. The cadaverous Maria Shriver pops on stage. Comedy relief: Ben Stiller-he wants to raise a “googillion dollars.” Jennifer Connelly stars in an ad for clean water. Snoop Dogg smokes the stage. More pleas from Kobe Bryant, then Triple H.

Teri Hatcher sings a bit of “Before He Cheats” after she “catches” Carrie working with James Denton on a sink. Denton plays guitar in the “Band from TV” group. She’s actually not half bad. Mary Murphy, wearing khaki (??), from “So You Think” screams and screams. Hey, at least this all happened before the traditional 8 p.m. primetime hour!

At 8 p.m., the Jonas Brothers plea and the girls scream. Billy Crystal makes some jokes about not knowing who Miley Cyrus is and vice versa. Wow, this bit drags on and on. But the crowd seems to like it. Fox must love this extended promotion for ABC (“Desperate Housewives”) and Disney (Cyrus). It’s all for charity, folks! Must… clamp… down… cynicism!

At 8:10 p.m., the first shots from the regular “Idol” studios pop up with the top 12 on stage literally taking live donations. Look—David Hernandez, Amanda and Chikezie are back! Bono on tape is in Africa in a village decimated by AIDS. After a commercial break, Julianne Moore does a pre-taped plea.

Then it’s Fergie with John Legend followed by “Idol” favorite band Heart (“Barracuda”). Bringing Fergie on seemed a little indulgent on Fergie’s part. Just let Ann do her thang, bless her heart!

WWE’s John Cena, then Adam Sandler throws out the 1-800-IDOL-AID number. Call! Eli & Peyton Manning show up on stage at the Kodak to promote Save the Children. Oh, and the Beckhams read cue cards. Syesha, Kristy, Michael and David Cook are in the front rows and are getting more airtime. It’s now 8:40 p.m., with more Bono, joined by Annie Lennox, both in Africa. Lennox is truly emotionally wrought. Kiefer Sutherland in suit and tie tapes a quickie plea.

By 9 p.m., we see Celine Dion in Africa. Jimmy Kimmel roasts Simon. “All the good feelings about the British Mary Poppins brought here he has undone… we should set aside a little bit of money tonight to buy Simon a shirt that fits him. I know you’ve had that black v-neck since the fourth grade.. but it’s time to let it go… on some nights it looks like you’re smuggling the Olsen twins under your shirt… Back to Simon’s nipples.. some think Paula is crying. It’s his nipples keep poking her in the eyes.”

“American Idol without Simon would be like Christmas without the Grinch, a picnic without ants, like Ryan Seacrest without the faux hawk.” We watch a video of Simon visiting mobile medical units paid for by “Idol Gives Back” to help the medically uninsured. It’s disorienting seeing Simon in this role of playing empathetic. He then introduces Carrie Underwood, who he reminded us was the one he (correctly) predicted would outsell all other Idols. She sings, with the proper emotional nuance. Whoopi and it’s commercial time!

Finally, we hear an upbeat song courtesy of Gloria Estefan with Sheila E in the background. They are giving the illusion that the Sunday night taping is live by hiding the “Idols” in the side boxes at Kodak while their live versions are on stage at the regular Idol theater. And notice Ryan opened at Kodak but has since disappeared from that portion of the show once he was shown live.

Uh oh, Sarah Silverman—being sincere? About malaria? Forrest Whitaker shows us how one pill can save someone from malaria in Africa. The Prime Minister of England pops in via video. Okay, we’re getting close to the end. It’s 9:20 p.m. with Keith Urban doing the plea. Reese Witherspoon (who had mike problems and had to do her take again) promotes the Children’s Defense Fund and shows a video of her at a “freedom” school in New Orleans.

The Idol stage is cleared of phones and the top 8 sing some inspirational tune. We know it’s inspirational because there’s a big chorus. Then Dane Cook pops up at the Kodak Theatre three days earlier to promote Keep a Child Alive with Alicia Keys in Africa.

Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale, from the set of “High School Musical 3,” do the plea followed by a second (!) performance by Miley Cyrus (her hit “See You Again”). They must figure she’s ratings gold for those kid demos so why not double up? She and her dad Billy Ray visit some really poor parts of the Appalachian area.

Then Robin Williams reprises his “Moscow on the Hudson” character as the Russian “Idol.” (I guess Yakov Smirnoff was busy.) ” ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ means something totally different there,” he said. Wow. Jokes about good ol’ communist Russia and drinking! How timely! He sings and if you find Robin amusing, well, there ya go. And Rob Schneider (“Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo”) does the plea. Rob Schneider?

Homestretch, people: Tyra Banks does a taping. Then David Spade (“Tommy Boy,” “Joe Dirt”) introduced Brad Pitt (“Fight Club,” “Seven”), whose charity is helping post-Katrina New Orleans. His mike didn’t work so they showed the director came up to fix it, saying, “I needed a reason to touch him.” He showed a tape of Daughtry in Uganda.

Hold your horses, WAGA-TV news staff. This looks like it will go well past 10 p.m.! In fact, at 10:02 p.m., Mariah Carey hits the stage with Randy Jackson on bass. (Mariah hasn’t looked this trim in years and she can still vocally break champagne glasses.) At 10:05 a.m., Ryan closes out followed by the final eight (dressed in white) singing “Shout to the Lord.” Did I miss Maroon 5? And I thought Fantasia and Elliott Yamin would come by though I may have just overlooked them. And where was Amy Adams? And I also thought they were going to get videos from the three major Presidential candidates. Just as well keep the political stuff out of it. Then again, some leftover performances from Sunday may just be shown Thursday night. (I was told the taping took more than three hours with no commercial breaks.)

Overall, I actually enjoyed last year’s more. This one was longer, which didn’t help. There was unfortunately no “what the…?” moment like last year’s Celine/Elvis bit.

This year, the groups which will receive your monies are Global Fund, Malaria No More, Children’s Health Fund, Save the Children, Children’s Defense Fund and Make It Right, Brad Pitt’s campaign to help New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina.

Hey peeps. … looks around … So this is what this place looks like in the daylight.

So aren’t we thinking there’ll be something about 5 castoffs competing for a tour spot tonight? If so, y’all don’t want to miss that. Or did that turn out to be just a rumor?

You missed my point entirely….these stars are begging the average citizen to give, give, give which we obviously are doing based on the current numbers…..I think that it is great that this much money has been raised tonight for such great needs….BUT, how much more could be raised if these “stars” would let go of their millions (which would be like pocket change to the average citizen)!

Nitpicky point, but did anyone else notice how they changed/censored the lyrics at the beginning of the inspirational song/closer ‘Shout to the Lord’? I think it was a pretty crappy move on the part of Idol.

By Concerned

April 9, 2008 10:28 PM | Link to this

You just don’t get it do you???? If you were one of these in need would you be satisfied if one of these “stars” just sang at your fund raiser or would you rather them put their money where their mouth is and reach into their pocket and donate a few thousand or a million dollars….something that they could easily afford and that could really be put to use to help you?

Concerned you still have not proven that the stars did not donate. How do you know that they didn’t reach in their pockets?

Please provide evidence that what you are saying is true, that the celebrities did not donate anything other than their time… time which helped raise millions of dollars. Their time raised far more money than they could have donated on their own.

Wow, judging by Rodney’s unimpressed play-by-play summary, and the disinterested comments that followed on this board, I’m so glad I boycotted this pandering drek to watch the Pens white-wash the Sens.

All I can say is thank God we’re done with “Idol Pretends to Give a Crap” for another year. I tuned into it for one minute during a hockey commercial and saw some toothless hilljack living in a dumpy shack talking about sending her kids to college. I thought, hey, why not get a friggin job no matter how menial, clean up your filthy mess so it doesn’t look like that, and show some self respect. You want your kid to go to college, yet, you can’t be bothered to so much as mop your floor or clean up the garbage? Get real.

I thought Carrie did a great job on the George Michael song, and the taped thing with Daughtry was good. And I also liked the top 8 singing Seasons of Love - glad they didn’t ruin it. Did you notice that Brooke did not have a solo in that song? Interesting. Do y’all think that someone will really go home tomorrow night or will we have a replay of last year?

I agree 100%. The world is already trying to erase Jesus from history. For the producers of American Idol to take the name Jesus out of a Christian song is ridiculous. I do believe we should request some kind of a answer. But also I was glad to see a Christian song on the show, but was very disappointed when I right away noticed the lyrics changed. What I don’t understand was the other week they sang Dolly Partons songs with the name Jesus in it and they where left in. Also Mariah Carry sang her song which also had the name of Jesus in it. So for the producers to make such a decision is stupid. They must know they are going to get a response from the Christian community by making a decision like this. It is true though there is something about the name of Jesus. His name is so powerful.

This show is being constantly dumbed down, too many has-beens and b-listers. Simon was right - American’s are too self-important to know how to do this kind of thing well, and in 2 years the show will have been completely reworked, or be dead. Judging by the redneck comments from the assorted chicken-stranglers and unwashed trailer dwellers posting here, I suspect the dead part. Shock announcement: No-one cares when you are going to bed. Good Morning to All:

Songluvr: Being an HR Manager, your best chance to get a copy of your W-2 is through your HR Dept. They should have a 1 page copy of it and will be able to send you a copy. I know that I do it all the time.

Watched the whole show last night and was not overly impressed. Parts of it were rather good. I did like the fact that they used the contestants to man the live phones. That was a good touch. Terri Hatcher did okay on Carrie’s song “When he Cheats”. Didn’t know that Terri could sing. Annie Lennox gave a very moving preformance. The video brought tears to my eyes. As usual, Carrie Underwood was magnificent. Enjoyed her performance and she looked absolutely gorgeous. Also, the Daughtry video was very touching. If you have a heart, you couldn’t help but to be moved by it. Like the closing song with the exception of changing some of the lyrics. What is wrong with saying/singing Jesus in a song? After all, He is the reason we are all on this earth.

Just alittle tidbit I came across on Carly and Kristy, just in case anyone is interested.

Carly began a professional modeling career before age 9. At age 9, she landed the role of Little Cosette in the musical “Les Miserables”. AT 10, she made a movie, “Fools of Fortune” with Julie Christie and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Also, at age 10, she released her very first CD, “Carly’s Christmas Album”. At age 12, she landed a campaign print ad as the face of Denny Sausage. All of this took place in Ireland. She modeled until she came to American at age 15.Her doomed CD “Ultimate High” was released here in the states when she was 17 in 2001, soon after 9/11.

Kristy Lee had a previous deal with Arista Nashville. The label that carries Alan Johnson. Not sure what became of it, but will try to find out.

Well, I guess that’s all for now. Forgive me for being so talkative this early in the morning. Made to make up for last night.

Thinking about it again this morning, I am so glad I Tivo’d it! I think last years show was better. Whose idea was it to have comedians talk about famine and disease? Strange….Robin Williams was funny though - call me Bob!

And I am not a Fergie fan, and I don’t think Ann Wilson of Heart really wanted this young skinny woman in tight leather pants hanging all over her. The cartwheels across the stage was kinda odd.

Consciously taking out the name of Jesus in that song was pretty ridiculous. The song was powerful and the Idols did a great job with it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy the closing number was a Christian song, but still don’t know why the lyrics had to be changed.

I too flipped to the Braves at times, but Chuck James cured me of that in the 3rd inning.

I watched IGB for about 1 hour. It was all I could take. Too sappy, to self-promoting; and the celebrities… all the drama, and like we are supposed to be so enamoured (sp?)of them that we will automatically give up a year’s pay cause they asked nicely. Neg - I’m with you!

I didn’t watch any of the Braves - can’t take them at all these days. My mom is the huge Braves fan. We have season tickets for weekend games only. I usually dread every weekend! Guess we have gotten spoiled with them being so good in the past. Mom says they are starting off slow; they will then become a wild card in the playoffs, and go to the series. Uh huh - mom lives in a very happy place!

Willie - my apologies!

OMG Neg: I am so sorry for mispelling Alan JACKSON’s last name! Really can’t believe that in my proof reading, I missed that. He has got to be my favorite country star. Have all his CD’s and seen him like 9 or 10 times in concert. Guess I need to start proof reading more than once. Glad that you called me on it. Have no idea where Johnson came from.

Morning all -

Flats - I think I will definitely have rethink my screen name after that crap performance by the Braves.

Lara - I have to agree with you. You know Ann & Nancy were skinny and hot 25 years ago - you know that were calling Fergie “beotch” the entire time. Especially in that painted on pair of pants she had on.

My 20 year old son wondered how many orphans could be fed and clothed by just one of Alicia Keyes’ earrings! It does make you wonder just what the stars donate besides their time. And Miley Cyrus??? WTF??? That whole Billy Crystal bit was really painful to watch. If all the money spent on Miley Cyrus concerts was to be donated instead of parents paying for their precious spoiled little girls to see that untalented achey breakey teen…..that makes me want to puke. The AI contestants sing better than her!! There, just had to purge.

Carri - I wondered the same thing about the SnoopDog jewelry. What was that thing on his hand that looked all diamondy? Didn’t watch long enough to see Alicia Keyes. And didn’t the “chubby” Heart get a gastric bypass awhile ago. What happened? As for Fergie, I would give anything to look like that! Except my craving for chocolate…

Flats: No idol winner has been from Georgia. They are from:

  1. Kelly - Texas
  2. Ruben - Alabama
  3. Fantasia - North Carolina
  4. Carrie - Oklahoma
  5. Taylor - Alabama
  6. Jordan - Arizona

Looks like the south has produced more winners.

As far as I know, I can’t remember the Masters ever being in Atlanta.

DawnH, I missed Snoop - Doggone it! hehehe. I think I was fixing dinner and missed some of the start of the show because I don’t remember seeing Heart or Fergie, either. I enjoy AI, but last night was one of those shows you want to kick yourself afterwards for watching for so long. I had not heard about one of the Wilson sisters having gastric bypass surgery. Speaking of ‘tho, did you see Carney Wilson recently on “Goin’ Country” on CMT? She’s regained since her surgery and playboy shoot. She seemed very nice and not like a “star” at all, unlike Bobby Brown who was wasted in all the episodes. That was a fun show to watch!

A few things really touched my nerve last night..First, what was that god awful shrieking bellowing screeming Fergie duet with the fat lady dressed in black..Baracuda? my god I had to turn the volume all the way down. What the hell was all of that LOUD screaming for? It was awful. I never ever heard anything so loud noisey and just painful. This Fergie chick needs to just put the mic down and sing without one. she is just that loud! ugh! and not good either! Hell have the contestants aleast sounded a lot more pleasent. sorry shes too loud for this Handsome OLD Man(my new nick name thanks to a certain sand eating bellie crawler glow worm on board) Good Grief what is all the shouting about? Annie Lenox to me was the MOST heartfelt..she nearly had me in tears when she broke down several times..and her song was the bomb. so much raw emotion..i had no idea Annie could blow like that..I was impressed. Best of last night by far. Mily Cyrius(whatever) what on earth was that? Pitchy would be far to nice a word to describe the horriable noise and 5th rate performance this young lady who is obviously out of touch with what sounds good and what sounds like pure and decent noise. I can pull almost any young white female off the street who probably could sing circles around this chick. Whoever ran out and spent money on her for her cds(not records as she put it) need their ears flushed and horse whipped. Every last one of the female contestants past and present out sang her on their bad days. Why was she there? and as for her dad Billy Ray, I can think of nothing he ever made I would consider even listening to much less buying. Best Performance of the night, most heartfelt..Annie Lenox. I was not a fan of her before..but she won my heart last night..make an old man cry..Oops(i did it again!) I meant to say Handsome Old man:-)

Also, I understand the medicine and food being shipped over but how about some Birth control as well. The birth rate is out of control..under the circumstances no more than two children alowed especially if you dont have the means to care for them. That upset me a lot. And the same goes for poor areas here in the USA that they also showed..Yet no one is talking about birth control. Until the birth control is addressed no matter how much money we all send as long as babies are being pumped out like rabbits the situation will NEVER better. Those same ophans we saw last night will be having babies in another year or so. Where is the line drawn? Give Food Medicine and Birth Control! or sterilzation. We constantly are reminded to spay and neuter our pets well there should be a limit on how many children are bought into a family below the poverty level. i dont expect anyone to agree as I am not interested in anyone agreeing or disagreeing for that matter. THats my opinion. Birth Control needs to be promoted, in africa and the US..sorry.

Blkshepherd sorry but I will never buy into the idea that the wealthy need to dictate to the poor what their reproductive choices are. At best the concept reeks or euro-centralism. I understand educating and offering the means for reproductive and disease control, but an attempt to force reproductive limits is wrong no matter which way that you look at it.

Oh my goodness. Sounds like we have some serious stuff going on. From denouncing Jesus to birth control.

Will have to agree with Blkshepherd on his post. Annie Lennox was the STAR of last night’s show. She just blew me away and had me in tears. Also, I whole heartily agree with you on promoting birth control. Any person in their right mind knows what causes pregnancies and if you are unable to support a helpless child, at least have the sense to prevent it. After all, YOUR child(ren) are YOUR responsibility. I do understand that in some cases things beyond your control (losing job, death of spouse) etc, may put you in a finanical bind but that is alittle different than to keep having children when you can not afford them. GET EDUCATED AND USE BIRTH CONTROL.

There, I have had my say on the subject. Sorry if I have offended any one with my opinion.

hello EVERYONE

i have a suggestion. The trolls today are particularly heinous and vicious, and it is my suggestion (since that’s all i CAN make on a public blog) that we all ignore the obviously trouble-making comments as if they were not there—greg this means you ignore them ALSO, please

true trolls cannot live on no attention and will soon depart the premises. i know there are exceptions, but… can we give it a try… don’t dignify behavioral ugliness with recognition

suggest made, now i have to get back to work….

Jtesla I am not interested in whether you agree with me or not as my stance remains the same. Whether it be africa or usa..myself and others are getting sick and tired for having to take care of other folks off spring. sorry..You lay up and have 8 damn children and the rest of us who have only a couple or none have to take up your slack! Wrong! This is probably a reason many choose NOT to give. If those 2million ophans are not educated they will bring more children as there are babies having babies. If you want give your last to feed all of these extra unecessary lives then knock yourself out and put a little extra in there for me! Just like I control how many pets I have and dont have more than I can handle and the city have to step in and fine homes and waste tax payers money. YES I SAID SOME FOLKS DONT NEED TO BRING ANY KIDS ANY MORE CHILDREN THEY CANT TAKE CARE OF. THAT IS ANOTHER FORM OF CHILD ABUSE as you are exposing a child to POVERTY YOU KNEW DAMN WELL YOU WAS IN BEFORE GETTING PREGNANT> like I said Send if you choose. INfact send your whole damn paycheck for all I care.

Thank you Menana. I call it like I see it. I have been in this world long enough to know that you Dont have to be fruitful and muliply, especially when you KNOW you cant afford to even feed clothe and house your own tail. This has nothing to do with Africa. This is about responiblity in all lands and cultures. Have a family accourding to your household income and what you can take care of. Nice to see some folks are concerned about world population and the state of the World. The USA can not Save the world. we can not send money We NEED ourself to feed and clothe folks who dont have a clue about abstinance or birth control. Then folks want to get on there and beg from folks who Are responible for the out of control birth. Its a fact that if your not born in to money like Paris Hilton. and the royal family. You cannot keep pushing out babies because the rest of us who are responible should not have to keep bailing you out and keeping you afloat! Close them legs. wrap up that pee shooter or get fixed. I can fully understand if one’s health is bad, lost of job, divorce whatever..a set back..but if thats the case Why get pregnant again when you already got 4 you cant even feed or take care of? I know the delivery of my message may be a little rough but last night made me sick because i see it every day infront of my face..YOung folks refusing to get the message. Again all those who want to send all your hard earned coins..Be my guest..send a little extra in there for me too and sign it with my name. I dont mind help or extending a hand..but I expect you to atleast TRY to help yourself. AGAIN. Education, Food, Medicine, ANd Birth Prevention Needs to be addressed. If you cant understand that..well go back to living under a rock.

I tuned in twice…in the beginning, which was a complete “turn-off”, so I changed the channel. Came back later, just in time to catch Annie’s visit to Africa, which was worth it. Annie is a good soul. She was here in the ATL in October for a concert at the new Cobb Energy Centre - fantastic performer and a true humanitarian. I’m sure she was one of the few on “Idol Gives Back” whose appearance was genuine. Other than unfortunately missing Heart & Robin Williams, looks like I didn’t really miss anything. I’ll be tuning in tonight. I understand Idol comes on at 8 for results night rather than the usual 9 pm. Probably some sort of “regurgitation” of last night’s show we will have to endure. Don’t get me wrong…I’m all about the support of humanitarian efforts for those who truly need it. I get turned off, though, when it’s a cause celebre for the celeb. Maybe I’m just getting “old”….LOL.
