4/7: Idol Gives Back spoilers

Part of Idol Gives Back was taped Sunday night at the Kodak Theatre and will be melded into the live show Wednesday.

Kristin Sample from TVSquad saw the show and gives her skinny on it.. If you want to be surprised, don’t read the rest of this entry.

idol-gives-back-2.jpg

Among the celebs who show up on stage: Snoop Dogg, Reese Witherspoon, Brad Pitt, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Miley Cyrus (right), Carrie Underwood, Annie Lennox, Fergie, Heart.

I also spoke with Jason Igram, a friend of Michael Johns, who sat in the first balcony of the Kodak Theatre last night. He said he enjoyed the Robin Williams bit with Randy, Simon and Paula. He apparently plays a Russian “Idol” contestant. Billy and Miley tease each other about not knowing who each person is. Ryan hosted. The contestants got to do a couple of group sings, the opener featuring some “So You Think You Can Dance” dancers. He said Jimmy Kimmel was hilarious cutting down Simon.

The taping itself lasted 3 to 3.5 hours with no commercial breaks.

The New York Times noted that “Idol” has not released a full accounting of how the $76 million raised last year was spent. But after reading the story, it sounds like “Idol” has been prudent in how it spend and distributed the money.

A spokesman for the Charity Projects Entertainment Fund, the organization that oversaw the fund-raising and distribution, said its financial statements were being audited and would be released by the federal financial reporting deadline for charities in May.

That does little, however, to help individuals and corporations that, while considering further contributions, might wonder what happened to the money they gave last year. But interviews with officials involved in the charities that received money as well as people associated with the fund-raising effort show that most of what was raised last year has been given or pledged to organizations fighting poverty in the United States and Africa. Some $5 million of last year’s proceeds and interest remains undistributed.

I’ve got interviews set up for Josh Gracin Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. and Friday with Clay Aiken at 2:40 p.m. Any questions I should ask either? Email me at rho@ajc.com.

Thanks for the info Rodney. As for questions I would like to know what Clay thinks of the current Idol contestants.

The link to the charity story is appreciated.

LOL, JT and Willie!

I had to climb over large pieces of furniture to get to the computer! I would have been here sooner but the air was hick with broken tile dust and old flooring material…I couldn’t breathe. I need one of those mask things.

I don’t GET Miley Cyrus. But then, I’m not 13 anymore either.

Rodney…ask Josh how his little girl is…after seeing her on Idol Rewind, I was wondering how old she is now…probably 6, I think.

Ask Clay if he enjoyed doing the narration for Idol Rewind. And if he had never done Idol, would he do it now, knowing what he knows about the process.

Now I need to go outside and breathe some fresh air.

JT: Miley just turned 15.

Rodney: A couple questions. Clay: Ask him how he is enjoying broadway and if he has any plans to do another TV Christmas special. The one he did before was really a good show, Josh: Ask him what stars has be opened for and does his wife and daughter tour with him. Also, does he write any of his own works.

I think that will do for the questions for now.

Ever since We are the World came out in the early 80’s celebs have been raising money for the poverty stricken Africa. Unfortunately I never see any advancement in the regions where the money is suppose to go. Oprah used 42 million of her own money to build a school. You can see what she got for her money. When are we going to see where the 70 million Idol raised last year and all the other moneys that hundreds of other celebrities have raised over 2 decades. Please stop showing us thousands of dollars of rice that was sent over.

By War Eagle

Grace, maybe you could donate some money to my charity.

I want to but a racehorse.

I’ve decided to call him “My Face”.

I don’t care if he doesn’t win a race, or makes me any money.

I just want to hear thousands of people at the Kentucky derby

Shouting…………………….

“Come on My Face!”

By Menana

April 7, 2008 3:44 PM | Link to this

I have to agree with Grace. Just where does all the money go? In 20 years, you would think that there some be improvements. I am sure that over the years millions upon millions has been raised, but the public never gets a true picture of how exactly the money was used. The charity drives needs to have a way to publish what ways the money was used showing a beginning and ending balance.

WE - As crude as your comments are sometimes, I have to admit that they always manage to get the “juices” flowing. Now I call THAT talent!

By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

April 7, 2008 3:53 PM | Link to this

Actually, Grace, IGB wasn’t showing us pictures of rice that was sent over. First of all, members of the Idol community went into rural poor America and into Africa. A big push in Africa is to get the mosquito netting distrubuted especially for children, and a large chunk of Give Back money went for the purchase and distribution of netting, among other things. If you watched IGB last year, books, netting, food and water, as well as building of wells and other structures needed was done. I think you may be confusing IGB with other charities. Some are saying that having $5 million left means they aren’t distributing the money, i think there’s an article somewhere about it; to my thinking, however, it shows that they are not just sending money out willy-nilly, but are letting the money accrue interest while they determine what to spend it on. It’s easy to just spend money… takes a little more thought to spend it WISELY, imho.

Oh, and Oprah. Yeah. We can see what she got for her school — more problems for those kids! Not that it was HER fault, but… it didn’t exactly turn out all roses and no thorns, now did it? and her big give away show? how much of THAT money has been wasted on things like luaus for a family that struggles to feed its kids, or a driveway swept when the lady said she didn’t NEED any help? or what EVER.

easy to criticize when you aren’t the one holding the checkbook…

Crude??

By War Eagle

April 7, 2008 4:08 PM | Link to this

A papa mole, a mama mole, and a baby mole all live together

In a little mole hole.

One day, papa mole sticks

his head

out of the hole, sniffs the air

and said,

‘Yum! I smell maple syrup!’

The mama mole sticks her head

out of the hole,

sniffs the air and said,

‘Oh, Yum! I smell honey!’

Now baby mole is trying

to stick his head

out of the hole to sniff the air, but can’t

because the bigger moles

are in the way.

This makes him whine,

‘Geez, all I can smell is….

MOLEASSES!

Oh, and Grace, please accept my apology if anything i said sounded like i was aiming it at you! I wasn’t.

I agree that celebrity fundraising (which goes back much further than We are the World in the 80s; look at Jerry Lewis’ MD Telethon— that’s like 40 years old now) sometimes seems NOT to have any tangible results, and should have more publicly displayed results.

After all, if we just hand people money and expect them to do — or know WHAT to do with it — we probably are wasting our time and money. the adage give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will be able to eat for life holds very very true.

I’ve often wondered at some of the “—-Aid” concerts and benefits and where the money REALLY goes — how much pays for the talent, how much pays for the staging, and how much actually goes out to those in need.

But from what i’ve seen, AI’s Give Back has been pretty responsible about it’s giving. And Ellen — she’s way too outspoken for anyone to believe that if she felt there was something WRONG, she wouldn’t have SAID so. somehow. some way.

Deidre - I don’t get Miley Cyrus either, but I have a 10 year old step daughter, so I have had to get used to her. I find her obnoxious, and she really can’t sing all that great. Makes me want to apologize to my mom for all the crap I made them listen to.

The show hasn’t even aired and we already have the anti-Africa crowd showing up to gripe about someone’s charity. There are a lot of lame charities out there, but I’m not going to p** and moan that people donate to them. Point and laugh maybe, but why waste bandwidth just because you can’t get your Cheetos laden rear off the couch to give to a charity of your choosing. I won’t be giving to Idol Gives Back, for the most part because I don’t trust them, but I’m not going to go on some Africa bashing rampage just because I’m poor and can’t fund my own charity drive.

Guess all of you have heard about the death of Charlton Hester over the week-end. What a sad day in Hollywood. On a lighter note, Beyonce and Jay-Z got married over the week-end. Saw some of the clips earlier today on what to expect on IGB. Appears to be a very good show Wednesday. Will watch it regardless.

WE: That was a very cute joke. Got any more? We need to lighten this blog up some more. Does anyone have any cute and CLEAN jokes that can be posted? If so, lets hear them.

As long as the money goes for a good cause, I’m all for giving. For 35 years I have given to Jerry’s kids, the empty boot fund, shriners, you name it and I most likely have donated a little. Guess I am just a big sap for that, Always trying to help others. I will say that while I believe in charity, that it should began at home first, then branch out to other needs and places. I know that IGB does start at home and that is always good. There are way to many children that are neglected and abused and if we can do anything to help them, we should. A child does not ask to be born. A birth is a miracle from God and as such, should be treated the way it is meant to be. Sorry, I get carried away on the subject of child abuse and neglect. It really makes me angry when there is no excuse for it. Alright enough on this subject.

Does anyone have any idea on tomorrow’s performances? If so, how about sharing.

So this is basically a random post because I’m bored. I’m updating how I feel on the 8 left.

Michael Johns- Still like him and happy that he is getting back in the swing.

Jason Castro- ZzZzZzZz. Needs to be gone real soon. Even if he pulled off something again like Hallelujah, even that was no American Idol performance. Come on now.

Brooke White- She’s also getting extremely boring.

Carly Smithson- She’s been showing her good vocals but yet has a blow away performance to show us. When will she do that I don’t know but what she is proving is that she wants to be 2nd best.

David Archuleta- Have loved this kid since day one audition, but with all the buzz it gets annoying and I stray away from youtubing his performances. Kinda sad seeing he was one of my favorites. Still think he’ll win against Cook, cuz he gets much more buzz.

David Cook- He’s doin’ great job I just want to see (maybe this week) a real nice vocal from him.

Kristy Lee Cook- Gotta go.

Syesha Mercado- I think she’s had 3 great performances in a row. And, though I wouldn’t mind seeing her go even further than this, I think AT LEAST, she should finish 5th. I can think of at least 3 people who so deservingly need to go before her. I don’t think she will leave this week, because that’d be just awkward knowing she came in the same place as Nadia Turner.

And this week’s theme is inspirational songs correct? Dang, so what would be a the problem with KLC doing Amazing Grace? Uh… greeeeat…hope not..

So I guess Oprah should not donate any more money to schools since a child may get molested? TO HELL WITH EDUCATION. I think Oprah was leaning more toward that “teach a man to fish” theory.

There is not a school standing on this entire earth where a child has NOT been molested. Unfortunately children are more likely to be abuse by a family members. It was just blown up for international news cause it was Oprah.

Harmony, thank you. As I have shown tonight, sometimes it would probably be better just to not say anything!

So if everything works out tomorrow we might get an interview with Josh, and of course a performance night build up. It should be a good blog day. Hopefully the internet at work gets fixed so I have something to look forward to.

Ask Clay if he is going to be traveling again with Unicef any time soon and if they have any new projects going for the Bubel/Aiken Foundation? Also what kind of promotions will he be doing for his new album, On My Way Here? The single is wonderful!

JT and Songluvr, I don’t think that I will be talking to myself tonight because the unexpected remodeling of my home has really tired me out. I think I’ll call it a night, talk to everyone after I’ve had some much needed sleep.

Morning mushblogians!

No, I’m not back…they haven’t even touched this room yet. Once they do, I fear I won’t be able to chat again until the weekend.

No spoilers!

No performance lists!

I’m going to need some of those little blue pills!

I want to thank Willie right off the bat for giving me special dispensation for my long posts due to my difficult circumstances.

I also want to give high praise to the night crew, whose dedication to making us laugh is unparalleled! WE, will you return to your day duties when the out of state job is over, stay with the night crew or do both!?

linny and JT…may those annoying ‘sinus things’ be gone by the time I return.

I’m pretty sure they’ll get to this room today so….blog happy, be good to each other, respond to trolls with your wonderful senses of humor, don’t take any wooden nickels…Where the heck did THAT come from? and above all…Enjoy the Show!

Good morning. Fighting off a migraine right now. Ugh! Well, I am sorta looking forward to tonight, and then not so much. I am concerned that these inspirational songs are gonna be all mushy!!!

Yep, watching Rock the Cradle. Who’s your fav? Hubs and I loved both Jesse and Lucy. Of course, style of music greatly influences opinions - we are old head bangers so tend to favor the rockers.

Good Morning to All…… Hope you all had a good nights rest. The night shift did pretty good last night. Harm and Song thinks that WE will corrupt me, but naw, not a chance. Way to old for that. D: Hope your remodeling is coming along and is soon completed. I think tonights show will be good. Anxious to see what songs the eight will choose. I have always enjoyed inspirational songs, and I think KLC will do really good. Does anyone have any picks on whom will do what? If so, I would like to hear them. Willie: Is my post within your range of length?

Rock the Cradle is a show on MTV where the children of music stars past are put to the test - can they make it in their parent’s business. MC Hammer’s daughter, Olivia Newtown-John’s daugher and even Bobby Brown’s son are all in the singing competition. I think the show is on at various times - you know how MTV replays and replays. But I think it originally comes on Thursday nights.

Right now, I am liking Lucy - she rocked (Joe Walsh’s, Eagles, daughter) and Jesse Blaze (Dee Snider’s, Twisted Sister, son)- he has the rock star personae. I LOVE Olivia Newton-John, but her daughter was awful! And what is up with those lips?

New Post? Maybe I should go post this over there - will anyone read it here or have they moved on?
