4/4: New Clay Aiken, Josh Gracin albums
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Quiet Friday, pre “Idol Gives Back.” I hope you all have a great weekend!
Josh Gracin came out with an album “We Weren’t Crazy” this week. Talk about under the radar! I just remembered!
His first album came out a whopping four years ago. Does anybody here want me to try to interview him? I probably should try to find a copy somewhere at Best Buy or get the label to send me one.
Clay Aiken’s album is coming out May 6. I’m definitely going to try to do a Q&A with him but he’s one of those that may be too high up the food chain for me to access for any real personal time. (The others being Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Carrie and Jennifer H.)
Ken Barnes at USA Today spoke with Aiken. This will be his first all-original collection since his debut in 2003 and it’s about time!
Aiken co-wrote one song on the new album, Lover All Alone, which first surfaced as an iTunes bonus track for Thousand. Musically, he promises the new album has “a little bit of something for everyone, from symphonic-type ballads to upbeat, edgy stuff.
In other “Idol” news:
Ratings this week were down about 5 percent from a year ago. At this point a year ago, Sanjaya mania was at its peak (or nadir, depending on your point of view.)
CMT was “appalled” by country night for not being very country..
Jordin Sparks does not go out on a limb and predicts a David vs. David finale. Her single “No Air,” by the way, is at No. 3 on the top 40 charts and is showing enough momentum to take the No. 1 spot since Chris Brown’s other hit “With You” and Sara Bareille’s “Love Song” are both starting to lose spins.
DJSlim reports that some Kelly Clarkson cuts for her upcoming album have been stolen and spread on the Web. Kelly spoke to billboard.com and said she hopes folks like the songs but admits they are just rough cuts. I found them online (Google is your friend.) The song titles are “Close Your Eyes,” “One Day,” “Ready” and “With a Little Bit of Luck.” The first three songs are very folksy ballads. Best of the lot: “Close Your Eyes.” “Ready” has potential, too. “Luck” is the only one which features a full band, a brooding mid-tempo tune.
Chase Crawford of “Gossip Girl” copes with his breakup with Carrie Underwood.. Yah, I don’t really know who this guy is either.

My wife is a Josh Gracin fan, and I’d never turn down reading a good interview.

Perhaps it’s time to stir the pot a little. After mulling over the CMT article, I’ve realized that the author is an elitist snob. I thought that country music had broken down the pretentiously rigid standards as to what a country artist needs to look and sound like.

Besides, it was NOT “country night” it was Dolly Parton night! While Dolly is undoubtably (indubitably?) country … her songs have always had tremendous cross-over potential. So CMT is being not only elitist, but also absurd, imho!

Rodney, the problem isn’t that Clay is too far up the food chain… the problem is that he thinks he is too far up the food chain. That is a subtle yet important difference.

I like Josh, so I’d be interested in reading an interview.
Clay is lame. He won’t say anything new or entertaining so I wouldn’t waste your time. I loved his voice when he was on idol, but lately he bothers me. He really thinks he is all that and a side of coleslaw.

i too am an anti-claymate, but i do like my coleslaw…but the coleslaw i like isn’t your normal coleslaw, it’s one i make from my dad’s recipe… more tart than most slaws, not so finely chopped, but that’s besides the point, LOL!
hope everyone has a good weekend… it looks like the weather is going to be just weird…. wet and cold or wet or cold or … something… i dunno.
guess i’ll go find a good book or something…. later!

Rodney: Tell Clay that we are all big fans, hopefully it will buy you a little more time. Prod him a bit on what he thinks of David A, I’d be interested to hear his thoughts on the stage dad thing. That is the limit of what I’d like to hear, but I’m sure there are some real claymates that read the blog who would like to know more.

JT - i’d love to share the recipe! but it ALSO involves making “homemade mayonnaise” because commercial stuff just does NOT cut it.
OK, for those uninterested in an old-fashioned tart coleslaw and ahomemade mayonnaise recipe, just skip over this post:
First the Mayo: 2 cups veg oil (i use canola); 2 tablespoons cider vinegar; 1 teaspoon each: mustard, salt, sugar; 1 raw egg; (best if done in a deep bowl with a mixer on slow speed, blenders tend to be too fast) put the mustard, salt, sugar and egg in the bowl and mix slowly until thoroughly blended, and a bit frothy. slowly, in about 1/8 cup increments, add the oil, mixing between increments until it starts to firm up.. when there is 1/8 cup of oil left, dump in the vinegar, mixing constantly but slowly, and when that is blended in, add the final segment of oil and continue mixing until firmed up again. I scrape it into a rubbermaid storage bowl, and sprinkle the top with paprika (doesn’t do anything but make it look pretty, LOL). Great on any sandwich, and as a salad dressing too. Keep refrigerated, obviously.
Now for the coleslaw. I cut up into strips one small head of green cabbage, one large sweet (preferably Vidalia if you can get it) onion diced, shredded carrots, and mix thoroughly. the cabbage is shredded instead of being diced up into tiny bits, btw. i sprinkle fairly liberally celery seed, salt, pepper and a dash of garlic. There’s no exact measurement of these, just put some of each (very little garlic) and if it’s not how you want it when done, you can add more of anything. Now spoon the homemade mayo into the mixture and stir until thoroughly coated. sprinkle cider vinegar (for the tartness…to taste, i usually use at least a couple of tablespoons)… mix it well, and taste it… then add seasonings to bring it to a taste you like.
end of recipe time
It’s not scientific, but the homemade mayo is what makes the difference; if you use commercial, it’s too sweet for my taste, and i don’t like the preservatives they use anyway.
the mayo sometimes will separate, not sure why…don’t throw it out! add some spices, maybe some ketchup, shake and voila! you have a pourable salad dressing!

Lila — sometimes things get a little out of hand, usually due to boredom during the “off days” from AI. Additionally, there are those who seek out blogs to try to disrupt them with off color or crude comments. Generally, we try to IGGIT that sort of stuff because there is NOTHING we can do about it. If it’s extremely crude and offensive, there is a feature called “Comment Removal Request” (on the left of the blog just below the “American Idol Buzz Links” that you can submit a request to remove a comment, but you have to have a reason why.

I am a American Idol fan and i read this blog daily. I am a first time poster. My thoughts is that this blog is open 24/7 and ther just isnt enough American Idol discussion to fill all of that time. In the meantime…Sharon, I agree. I used to find myself defending some of the guys all the time to the more sensitive among us. When Negativo first dropped in, I got his sense of humor right away. War Eagle, never hesitating to speak his mind, has been a welcome addition to the crew and JT has that dry wit that gets right to the point. flats is an entity unto himself! I like conversing with RC, too when he forgets for a few minutes how pizzed off at us he is. Mike S isn’t on often but when he is…you KNOW how he feels about a particular topic. Blackshepherd drops in now and then for one of his ‘stream of consciousness’ posts(which I love) and even the would be harassers, like Willie and Gill are kinda fun to have around.
OK, guys….don’t let all this nice talk inflate your egos TOO much. Just letting you know that I appreciate the down to earth chatting!

A ‘Brief’ History of the Blog :-)
I’ve been blogging here for a long time but I was, by no means, the first. This place started out as your normal every day ajc blog. People would pop in and comment….every now and then someone would respond to another commenter rather than to Rodney. But generally, it was on topic ALL the time with large gaps between posts. AND, btw, the posts didn’t take this long to appear….they weren’t instant but they rarely took over a minute.
I remember that achin4aiken was here when I first joined in…Lara was here, too. I think linny was around as well but I’m not positive on that. Mike might have been…if I’m leaving anyone out, I apologize. I came on about mid-season of season 3 I think.
We got to talking to each other, almost exclusively about Idol, and that’s when things started to get lively.
By the time season 4 started, we were adding new people and the topic would start out on Idol then start to shift a little.
We had always had ‘interlopers’ People who came on to tell us to get a life or how stupid we were but now we added MPD’s. People who posted as more than one person. We also got WAY too friendly, exchanging email addresses and photos…turned out to be a big mistake.
After season 4, some people stayed on and used the blog as a chat room during the off-season. Maybe 4 or 5 people…I would pop on occasionally and say hello.
During season 5, our ranks grew enormously. This season was extremely popular.
After season 5, many people stayed on during the off season, chatting about all sorts of things and, generally having a really good time.
Season 6 rolled around and we were granted the wonderfulness of the social networking blog! We were in heaven…avatars, network email capabilities, profile pages with pictures and fun info…..it was ‘the best of times and the worst of times’ That old adage ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ reared it’s ugly head. Things were said that couldn’t be taken back…anger and arguments started to take the place of friendly blogging…and during the summer that followed season 6, things changed drastically.
A large group of friends left to form their own blog. A smaller group remained here. We suffered through the end of heaven, as the social networking blog was taken away from us and we returned to this antiquated format.
But times are good again on the ole blog! New, happy voices have joined in…old friends pop in occasionally to say hello….and the topics stick pretty close to Idol(much to Rodney’s relief!)
Good people talking about a common interest! And it really helps that this season has “the BEST talent EVER” to quote Paula.

Oh for heaven’s sakes x. It was a VERY general history. Did I go into detail about anything? Would you like me to chronicle every bad thing that EVER happened to you here? I’d be happy to but I Don’t Know Who You Are!!!!!
If I wanted to talk about ALL that happened, I would have had to go into the Jim J era, the problems Mike had with Gildude, the constant bickering over Jeff and his baseball career, the endless and mindless harassment by Duke and the ever present flatscreen. Let’s be fair! Did you want me to talk about all that or did you think the bad stuff that happened to you was extra special?

Sharon, I too will say Thank You for putting into perspective such silly whining about a blog - which has less relevance to the real world than a little girl’s diary might.
For the record, I posted some during part of all that a couple years ago, and one reason I didn’t post from then til now is that the whole vibe here was different then … if you weren’t ‘in’ enough to get all the inside jokes, you were fairly well ignored - with a few exceptions (thank you Deirdre and Linny and just a couple others).
I am glad this blog feels different now. Here’s to a new attitude. *…raises glass of Coke… *

I just have a few comments and Q’ns about A.I. My 1st Q’n is this….why do you need judges if the american public are the ones who decide the final outcome? why should anyone care who Randy or Simon and Paula like or dislike in the compitition? As far as I’m concerned their jobs should end as soon as americans get to vote. This to me and many others out here it seems to have become a popularity contest rather then a talent contest. Just look how many times the wrong person has been let go too early or the wrong person chosen a winner for that matter….Taylor who? How about Jennifer Hudson….Chris Daughtry etc….etc nice call there America…like DUH! Last night was no better either the WRONG person got sent home again…like give us a break! You mean to tell me that Micheal Johns isn’t better then Jason Castro or Kristy Lee Cook?….PLEEEEASE! and what about Ryan Seacrest? What a complete JERK! How dare he do that to M.J. dangle false hope in front of him only to yank it away at the last second. I used to love watching A.I. but no more. I’m really disgusted with what goes on there and have chosen to cross it off my list of fav’s. I think your all tone deaf over there and this is all popularity contest as you’ve made that quite clear last night!
