4/1: Top 9 performance show w/ Dolly Parton, David Cook goes to hospital
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For folks who have been blogging for hours, I apologize for being so late with my thoughts, but I hung out with Michael Johns’ Atlanta buds at Tin Roof Cantina for three hours. Great folks. I’ll post photos and info I gleaned about Michael tomorrow. (I went to collect what we call “string” for the print edition next Tuesday.)
Anyway, since I wasn’t paying 100% attention during my stay at Tin Roof, I am re-watching the show now. Note to Ryan: I hope you didn’t write that lame April Fool’s joke. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Dolly songs is fairly shallow, starting with “Jolene” and “Here You Come Again” and ending with “9 to 5,” “Islands in the Stream” and “I Will Always Love You.” So several of these songs I’m 100% unfamiliar with.
Overall, there were no disastrous performances, nothing quite as bad as, say, Ramiele’s “Alone” last week. So here’s my order from best to worst, with No’s 3 to 6 virtually indistinguishable, ranking wise, for me.
1- Michael Johns (Hopefully, I’m not being too biased because I spent the night with his friends!) 2- Syesha Mercado (Justin-you and I are holding up the fort here!) 3- David Cook 4- Brooke White 5- Jason Castro 6- Carly Smithson 7- Kristy Lee Cook 8- David Archuleta 9- Ramiele Malubay.
I expect Ramiele will make her very first appearance in the bottom three and get eliminated. The other two? As usual, Kristy Lee will pop in there and survive. The third one is tougher. Carly may land there a second time, though this may just be wishful thinking to keep Syesha from having to stand by Ryan yet again. Jason’s fans will keep him safe this week, I suspect, and David A. has zero chance of being in the bottom at this stage no matter how bored I was. (I’m making these predictions without seeing Dialidol.)
ADDENDUM: TMZ reports that David Cook landed in the hospital after tonight’s show because of heart palpitations. His blood pressure was too high. He was treated and released. TMZ speculates that it might be stress related to the show and his brother’s cancer.
Up first: Brooke White (“Jolene”) I enjoyed it. It was a standard Brooke White performance. She certainly didn’t improve upon the Dolly Parton version but she’s safe. Randy: “I don’t know if that was a stellar performance. You had some pitch problems.” Paula: “You put your heart and soul and have an emotional connection with every song you pick.” Simon: “I think what was lacking was any emotional… I thought all of you looked odd together as a group.” B/B-plus
David Cook (“Little Sparrow”) Curiously, “Idol” decided to have Ryan ask Cook about his arrangement, giving him a chance to credit Neil Zaza and Doxology, the band bitching he took their version of “Eleanor Rigby” and Whitesnake for “Day Tripper,” as well as Chris Cornell for “Billie Jean.” “Tonight, I’m going to do my own arrangement of ‘Little Sparrow.’ ” he said. The song is about a man crushing a woman like a sparrow, so it’s a bit odd for a guy to sing it. Nonetheless, he does yet another vocally solid, heartfelt performance. Randy: “I like how you went into the false. You made your own arrangement and it was very cool.” Paula: “I like your haircut… I’ve never heard a guy do that song. It was fantastic.” Simon: “I’m not going to say it was as good as last week. If you can make a song about sparrows good, which you did, congratulations.” B-plus/A-minus
Ramiele Malubay (“Do I Ever Cross Your Mind”) She hasn’t been in the bottom three yet. Maybe it’s time. She adds a little twang and puts a bit more verve into it than normal. For Ramiele, it was pretty good though her bouncy movements are awkward. Nice final note. Randy: “You showed some signs of strength and conviction. 6 1/2 out of 10.” Paula: “You really connected with the audience and you were having fun!” Simon: “We’re not going to remember this in 10 years time. It was cute. You sang it quite well. It was forgettable. Something reminiscent of what you’d hear on a cruise ship.” (Yes, that’s her future job, in all likelihood.) B
Jason Castro (“Travelin’ Thru”) - That laid-back surfer vibe is prevalant as usual. It should satisfy Castro fans though I’m not sure if he can anything new to his persona that could expand his fan base. The song picks up and improves as he goes along. Randy: “It was pretty good.” Paula: “You seem so comfortable. Your voice sounded strong and rich.” Simon: “I didn’t like that at all… if this had been the first time I had seen you or heard you, I wouldn’t get it. Sorry!” B-plus
Carly Smithson (“Here You Come Again”) - Did Carly smile while she sang? She gives a throatier, heartier version of this pop crossover hit from the late 1970s than Dolly. It was good, not amazing. Randy: “That will probably be one of the better performances of the night. Nice job.” Paula: “That voice of yours. Oh my god!” Simon: “It was good, I didn’t think it was great. You’ve got to have a word with whoever is dressing you. I think at this stage, without being rude, you have to start looking like a star and I’m not seeing that progression.” B-plus
David Archuleta (“Smoky Mountain Memories”) - One of Michael’s friends tonight said he is like Josh Grobin. Good comparison! David’s strength is ballads and he picked one tonight that fit his voice perfectly. It’s a bit sleepy for me and is that hand-waving audience getting deeply annoying or what? Technically, note perfect. Just not my style. And look—there’s his dad or as we always call him “stage dad.” Randy: “I stand corrected—THAT was the best performance of the night.” Paula: “You are just glorious.” Simon: “This week, absolutely on the money!” B
Kristy Lee Cook (“Coat of Many Colors”) - She can’t possibly mess up a Dolly song, could she? Barefoot and in a dress of many colors, Kristy looks wonderful and sounds fine. Will it keep her around? Probably—just barely. For Kristy, this was . Randy: “This is definitely your wheelhouse.” Paula: “You look stunning and gave a beautiful performance.” Simon: “This was pleasant but forgettable.” Kristy then Simon an air kiss—semi-sarcastically. B/B-plus
Syesha Mercado (“I Will Always Love You”) - She merges a bit of Dolly and Whitney with it. I have always loved Syesha but this is a major risk given it’s iconic nature. But you almost think she has to go for it at this stage to avoid elimination. She doesn’t quite have the powerhouse vocal theatrics of a Lakisha or Whitney. But it’s warm and silky and that end note hits the heart. Go Syesha! Randy: “You took on the biggest tiger of the night. I think you did pretty good. It’s still hard for me to hear anybody else do that.” Paula: “I think you’re growing and connecting with the audience so much more. I love it.” SImon: “I almost wish you hadn’t gotten it. First part was good. Second part paled by comparison to the Whitney version. I don’t know if it helped you. It was good, wasn’t fantastic version.” A-minus
Pimp spot! Michael Johns (“It’s all Wrong, But It’s All Right”) - It was a good night to be on a patio full of Johns’ buds. He made them proud. He added a huge dose of soul and blues. With the one-hour format, the songs were even shorter than normal and I wanted more this time around. Randy: “You keep on bringing it up a notch. That was blazing hot.” Paula: “You’re a star, a rock star.” Simon: “This is the best I’ve ever heard you sing!”
Here’s other “Idol” news:
— Claudette Yamin, Elliott Yamin’s feisty mom, has died. She was featured on the sho was having medical problems but rooting emotionally for her son’s success. More details here.
— Randy Jackson’s “Best Dance Crew” show on MTV became a monstrous hit - at least in MTV land. It opened at a solid 1.7 million and built up to 4.9 million viewers for the finale last Thursday. If you haven’t seen the winning dance troupe JabbaWockeez, here’s a sample. They’re incredible!
— The Today Show ran a story about “Idol” and notes that the two frontrunners are now David Cook and David Archuleta. And the rumors about Archuleta’s stage dad are brought up again. Thank you MJ for posting this.
— And the controversy over David Cook covering other band’s covers of famous songs won’t die down. Doxology keeps claiming he took their version of “Eleanor Rigby” without attribution. He did give Chris Cornell credit for his version of “Billie Jean.” More info here at ew.com.
[Former Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell is both flattered and mildly concerned that fans were confused, even though Ryan Seacrest namedropped him.}(http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSN0144532620080401)
“Don’t get me wrong. He sang it great,” Cornell continued. “But it was literally a note-for-note take on what I came up with. At the end of the day, it’s all good. It’s a good thing for me. There was a moment when I was sitting there writing this new arrangement thinking, ‘Is this a good idea or a bad idea?’ Watching the response from the judges was really gratifying. They were signing off on it right there. It was something that worked. It was an idea that went over huge. When I play it live on tour, it brings the house down every time.”

willie, are you giving your identity away, here?
OMG. JabbaWockEez won????? i MISSED the freaking finale! i’ll bet MTV is still running it… these guys are freaking incredible!!!!! My only surprise is that Kaba Modern didn’t win. Were they Second? or was… oh oh oh what was their name…. the boston street kids? sorry that Sk8 didn’t go further, they were incredible, what they accomplished on skates, but to get to pure dance crews, J’eez was just unbelievable to me.

SPOILER ALERT
I think I finally have the REAL list
Syesha: I Will Always Love You.
Carly: Here You Come Again.
Kristy: Coat of Many Colors.
Brooke: Jolene.
Ramiele: Do I Ever Cross Your Mind.
Jason: Travelin Thru.
David C.: Little Sparrow.
Archie: Smokey Mountain Memories.
Michael: It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right.

Linny: Will check out the books by Mary Stewart. Have never read her, but am always looking for new reads. Thanks for the info.
Harm: I too, am looking forward to tonights show. Can’t wait to see who drowns and who swims.
D: If the list is accurate, I have five right. We shall see.

I think Brooke will absolutely rule with “Jolene”! I also think Carly made a perfect pick.
I am afraid that Syesha will try and Mariah I Will Always Love You and the judges will crucify her. I also see Ramiele struggling with DO I Ever Cross Your Mind.
All the guys songs are MEH! to me, so we will wait and see.
The wildcard is Kristy Lee. “Coat of Many Colors” is kind of a bland song and she is a bland performer, so it could be mere wallpaper, but I also think she could really do a great performance with it too.

Hey Mike…..did ever have to try to find spoilers on April Fool’s Day? If so, you have my sympathies! :-)
I think Syesha has doomed herself with this pick. She either has to sing it Whitney-style or Dolly-style and I think we ALL know which one she’ll pick. Not good!
I’m not so sure about Psycho-Killer -Bunny From Outer Space doing Here You Come Again. It will either lighten her up or the song is going to sound really stalker-ish!

D: Don’t start coming to soon. I have really disected and disected some more on which songs they will perform. I hope my choices pan out, but if not, I will work on next week’s once we get the subject on what they will do. I’m with you on Carley doing Here you come again. Just can’t picture doing that one. One of my choices for her was Bobby McGee. I think she would do better with one than Here she comes. But, what do I know? I am just a mere peon, however, sometimes I am right on. My last choices that I have are:
KLC: Coat of Many Colors
Carley: Me and Bobby McGee
Syesha: I Will Always Love You
Brooke: Jolene or Eagle When She Flies
Rami: Do I Ever Cross Your Mind
Jason: Holding on to Nothing
David C: Blowin in the Wind
David A: Smokey Mountain Memories
Michael: Buring the Midnight Oil
Since I’m on medical leave right now, I have extra time to really evaluate the songs. But I am most likely way off target. It’s just fun to guess and see how good I am. Every since season one, I have always made notes and kept a log each Tuesday and made my selections on whom will go on Wednesday. I am really serious about AI. In 6 complete seasons, I have only missed two shows. Not a bad record, if I do say so myself.

I have to say Archie nailed it. Excellent performance. Excellent song choice. And the kid IS good. solid A for Archie tonight. I don’t always think so, but tonight, i do.
Kristy Lee - i thought she handled it well. She fits in country, definitely. I thought it was a good performance, I’d give her a solid B+
Syesha’s choice was so predictable, and i did NOT like it particularly. If she’d kept it simple and husky, i think i WOULD have liked it, but the big voice Whitney ending ruined it for me. B-
Michael - ohhhh i bet D’s melting…. Mr. Johns is doing himself proud with a bluesy bluesy rendition!!!! yeah! A for him from me!
By Deirdre
April 1, 2008 9:15 PM | Link to this
Yep…D melted!!!
One: Michael Johns. It’s like he suddenly realized that this is a competition. First last week’s performance, then this. Two totally different performances. Last week was arena rock. This was bluesy/country and beautifully interpreted. It’s nice to see the versatility.
Two: Carly. I have to say I’m amazed. I thought she would make a mess of this song and not only did she sing it well…she sang it very well.
Three: Archie….perfect song choice and very well performed. The kid has a lot of talent.
Four: David C. not his best but still good enough. He has a great voice and a great relationship with the music.
Five: Brooke…not great for me but better than the rest of them.
Six: Syesha….started simple then went way over the top. The long note was about 5 seconds TOO long.
Seven: Kristy….that’s an emotional song and she didn’t get it across for me.
Eight: Jason….everything he does sounds the same. He has a nice little voice and that’s the problem…little and somewhat squeaky. And the green dreds(bad lighting) really looked awful.
Nine: Ramiele…she has a nice voice too but it lacks depth, emotion and energy.

Syesha!
Brooke White- I’m telling you, I should go be a judge! The judges always seem to match my thoughts. It was pitchy and forgettable, whereas beforehand I thought it would be great. And is it just me or is she the most annoying person left?! I hate when she constantly talks over the judges. Just irks me.
David Cook- His hair looked good…not from the side though! He sounded good and he will sail through…der.
Ramiele Malubay- It was boring…if she’s in the bottom 3 though, she’ll probably be safe.
Jason Castro- Wow, he actually isn’t closing the show. I thought he would for sure. I actually thought he did very well tonight with that song, but he’s not a great singer so whatever.
Carly Smithson- She did a very nice job. Simon is in a bad mood.
David Archuleta- Great vocals, nothin’ more to say…
Kristy Lee Cook- She looked great tonight. But it was one of those zzzzzz performances. Her look may save her.
Syesha Mercado- Come on, she could of closed the show! They alternate boy girl boy girl, then switch. How dumb? Anyway… DAMN I thought she did great! One of her MOMENTS! Judges don’t know NOTHIN’! Let me tell you what. She is in that bottom or goes home: mad wrong decision. And that long note she hit…I thought it’d never end. But I loved it. I knew she shouldn’t have picked that song though, because the judges have so much problem with it.
Michael Johns- 2nd best of the night. Or third. Not sure.

I thought Castro, Cook, and Johns nailed it. I don’t know what the heck Simon was watching…I was pleasantly surprised by their performances. Ramielle…didn’t get it. Kristy Lee Cook…the clock’s struck 12. Syesha…didn’t work for me. I did think Carly did a good job tonight though. That’s a first for me.

I am a Dolly Parton fan, so this week was a fun week for me. I thought everyone did very good this week, with three stand out performances.
One observation - Contrary to what he says, Simon hates country music and he took an extra dose of butt-head medicine tonight.
Now on to my rankings :
Michael Johns - It’s all wrong, but It’s alright - His best performance of the year for me. I loved his bluesy throaty growl on this song. Absolutely fantastic.
Carly Smithson - Here You Come Again - Carly finally lost the Psycho Killer Bunny From Outer Space DEATH STARE and actually cam across as likeable tonight. Add to that what was by far her best vocal performance of the year, and she is back to the top of my list. While I have liked a couple of her performances, this is the first time i have LIKED Carly. This was a vocal tour de force.
Kristy Lee Cook - Coat of Many Colors - OK, let’s be fair, country music is her wheelhouse, and as expected Kristy Lee hit a home run. This was her best performance of the year and rounds out the three break out performances of the night. Next week she will be back to ho hum Kristy, but for this one week she was a star.
Brooke White - Jolene - I personally thought this was a great heartfelt rendition of this Dolly classic. It was nothing breathtaking, but Brooke showed the depth of her vocals and the breadth of her talent.
David Cook - Little Sparrow - I actually liked his arrangement of the song and while it only gets fifth in my ranking, I would buy this song if it was released as a single.
David Archuletta - Smokey Mountain Memories - OK, I probably have Monchichi rated lower than most. Yes, he has a fantastic voice, YES he sounded great, but for me it was “another week, another heart felt ballad - YAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWNNNNNNNNNNNNN!
Syesha Mercado - I will Always love You - As soon as I heard this choice I knew she was going to take on Whitney and she was going to get gutted by the judges. Syesha really does have a fabulous voice, but she is not a BIG NOTE SINGER, and she pales in comparison to Whitney, Mariah etc. She was fabulous the first two thirds of this song, then she tried to match Whitney and failed miserably.
Jason Castro - Traveling Through - I think I have seen this performance before. Like every single week when Jason sings. Nice voice, nice folksy feel, nothing memorable.
Ramiele Malubay - Do I ever Cross your Mind - Ramiele has been a huge disappointment for me. She has such a big voice, but refuses to use it. Again, just like Jason, she sounded nice and smooth, but it was nothing memorable.
Bottom Three - Should be and Will be - Ramiele, Jason, Syesha. All three are very good, but they have not stepped it up or stood out. Ramiele is my pick for vote off, but Syesha has shown a lot of voting weakness and could be in huge trouble. Jason, I think, has just enough TWEEN girl support to pull through for another week or two.

And then there were the rankings…
Don’t know what y’all are watchin’ but Syesha gets the #1 spot for me!
Syesha Mercado
David Archuleta
Michael Johns
David Cook
Carly Smithson
Jason Castro
Brooke White
Ramiele Malubay
Kristy Lee Cook
So, the bottom 3 should be those last 3: Brooke, Ramiele, Kristy. First time I think I’ve put my bottom 3 rankings actually in the bottom 3.
I can’t imagine Syesha going home this week, but based on this popularity contest, she may be in that bottom. Let’s hope not… I really don’t see why people dont like her. Yep, blah.
Who should go home by now is Kristy…and I hate to say this b/c I like Ramiele but I actually wouldn’t mind her going home b/c that gives Kristy another chance to do bad and another chance for Syesha to remain.
So whoever makes it into the top 8 will participate in Idol Gives Back.
Guarantees: David A. David C. Michael.

Here are my thoughts for tonight:
Archie: “10” all the way. He picked a perfect song and he nailed it. No flaws there tonigh for him.
KLC: “9” - again a perfect song choice. She will no doubt end up with a contract in CM.
David C:-“81/2” He took the song and made it his own. Personally, I wished he had choosen another.
Brooke: “8” - definitely noy her best performance. Wished she had done Eagle When she Flies. She really needs to stop being argumentative with the judges. IMO that does help her fan base.
Rami: “5” Better than past performances, but still has not let herself go yet. She may be the one going home tomorrow.
Jason: “6” - Okay, certainly better than the last two weeks. Did show his vocal range to a degree.
Carly: ” 6” - Not really sure how to rate her. Don’t think is her thing, although her vocals did come in . She does have a range.
Michael: “9” - What I say about him? Thought h did an exceptional job and enjoyed his performance.
Syesha: “5” - She didn’t butcher the song but wished she had done another one. The one good thing she did good was to hold the end note
My predictions for the bottom 3: Ramiele, Jason, Brooke
Top 3: Archie, KLC; David C
End post for tonight. Pain meds has finally kicked in. I type and see triple of everything, so nite to all of you.

This is such an incredibly good season. Nobody blew it tonight. There are just a few singers who have weaker voices and/or performances than a few others.
While we may not like Kristy or Ramiele or Jason or…whoever, we have to admit that they ALL can sing this year and I’m inclined to think that that’s a first in Idol history!

Deirdre, let me know when it does show up there plz.
My rankings…
1 - Michael frikkin Johns - FINALLY. He returned to his first audition soulful verve and the result was incredible. WOW. It’s so obvious, I won’t even bring up his total hotness.
2 - Carly - Just beautiful, and somebody should have given her props for doing her own take on that song, quite different from Dolly’s take. One of her best for me, and I thought she looked great.
3 - David A. - He almost made Dolly and me cry with that gorgeous voice of his. Brilliant. I question tho what kind of performer he could be in concert at this stage in his game.
4 - David C. - Great job, AGAIN. He is just a joy to watch every week, and I know it will be so good. I love the new look. Still want to hear a good old love song from him (i’m not sure but I don’t think Sparrows qualifies).
5 - Syesha - Beautiful vocal, but too predictable for me. I would have loved to see her keep it low-key and smokey, or even sing it the way Melissa Etheridge did a few years back in a duet with Dolly.
6 - Brooke - I really thought I would love her doing country, but it was just aight for me, so, kind of a letdown.
7 - Jason - Just when he has been annoying the crap outta me for weeks, he actually shows up tonight and delivers a solid performance. I thought it was his personal best.
8 - Kristy - She looked very pretty.
9 - Ramiele - I liked it better than most of her performances, but …

I thought this was the best show so far this season. I actually knew all the songs but two. I loved Brooke White doing Jolene, and I thought Kristi Lee did a super job with her song. I thought David A. did a very good job and he is still my choice to win. I dont think Syesha will last much longer or Ramile. I predict they will be the next two to go then probably Jason Castro unless he steps it up. I still can not like Carly, I dont care what she sings.I just dont like rock music so that is probably why I dont care for David Cook, also. I do predict Syesha to go next, we will see.

Harmony, after you click the post button, wait a couple seconds then go to the top of your screen and click on the refresh button. That’ll get you back to where you can read posts.
It’ll take another refresh in maybe 5 minutes to see your own post show up.

that would be me, Song, LOL! it’s the only way i know of to (1) not get so frustrated at the freeze, and (2) to be careful NOT to hit the button again while it says “please wait”!!!
Sort of surprised that Gute went home on DWTS tonight instead of Marissa.
I think pretty much everyone except Justin agrees that Michael hit a HUGE home run tonight with his bluesy rendition of…. LOL what was it he sang again? all i can think of is how GOOOOOOOOD he sounded!
I hate to but archie in second place, but i actually think tonight he did perform well, better than most.
tomorrow night should be interesting; Dolly singing, Clark Bros performing, silly little group sing, ford commercial, and ramielle going home, maybe?
Sorry I wasn’t around earlier, but a belated “hi there” to Shay, long time no see! I agree, and i think a lot of us do, that we are just tired of archie… however the kid DOES have a great singing voice and talent… he’s just annoying as all get out; don’t know how much of that is being put in competitions for over half his life—that has to have some effect on his personality, imho.
tan- nope wasn’t you. Simon has never appreciated country music nights, and it just kills him that the two most successful winners do country (well Kelly does SOME country, her hookup with Reba for example) and Carrie is pure modern country. i was in fact totally stunned at his positive reaction last week to the Lee Greenwood song by KLC…
Tommy, from what Rodney said to me earlier today, its the “new Tin Roof” but i have NO clue where it is, since i don’t live in atlanta, lol!

Well I wont create a big long list, Ill just touch on that which I thought was right/wrong and move on.
Ramiele: I liked the 2 lines she sung on her own, for the rest of the song she was overpowered and out sung by the backup singers. They sang backup for the all but a few lines. Im done with her, yeah here is the obligatory ‘great voice’ bit, but this isnt a woulda - coulda -shoulda competition. She hasnt delivered let her go and sing with Danny on that cruise ship.
I agree with WE Brooke needs to sing and then shut it. I dont ever want her to say “its ok” to people booing the judges.
I still like Brooke, Chris did good and cut back on the emo, Michael Johns did great, and the rest just did what they normally do. That isnt bad, I like what they normally do, but they wont win that way. I did like Syesha, but then I dont consider it sacrilegious to sing a Whitney song. Still no love for Archie, but his dad made a good song choice and he did a good job of quelling the “ahh shucks”, but it looked like it was difficult for him to do, David must have been thinking of the yelling he would hear if he giggled too much.

Neg’s Take:
1. David Cook: The dynamo just kills it again. Can we just give him the Idol award now? He’s in a league of his own. Tamer hair style should persuade some of the more conservative voters he’s not a heroin addict.
2. Brooke: She gave the beautiful, soulful performance with total authenticity. Great voice, and great arrangement.
3. Kristy: See above. Just like Brooke, I found her performance to be beautifully sung from start to finish, and very authentic. If you didn’t like this you simply don’t like country music. Pure and strong vocals.
4. Carly Slow, boring arrangement and tempo tainted what was otherwise a sensational vocal.
5. Ramiele: Her best performance since the round of 24. She wasn’t sensational on stage, but very good vocals and not boring for once!
6. Syesha: Totally agree with Simon. She was sensational the first half when she did the Dolly version, but mediocre when she jumped to the Whitney version in the second half. She has a pretty voice but not a powerful voice, although she doesn’t seem to understand that yet.
7. Archuletta: I know he sings well, but I seriously can’t stand his voice anymore. Theatrical arrangements are getting very boring.
8. Michael Johns: Why anyone liked this performance I have no idea. I’m a huge blues fan, but this was so poorly done I had to make sure it wasn’t Amanda on stage butchering the tune. Brutal.
9. Castro: Sorry, but this dude just can’t sing at all. Nice harmony, nice guitar, zero voice.
Neg’s pick for going home: Syesha. She has talent, but has absolutely no fan base.

It’s great to read the diversity of voices and opinions on Rodney’s AI blog. This top nine IS very talented … I didn’t think anyone totally sucked tonight because all of them can sing. However, it should be Ramiele and Syesha in the bottom two, with Syesha going home because of her lack of fan base. Ramiele hasn’t been in the bottom three yet, has she? Brooke has a nice voice, but I find her sweet personality cloying, as well as her talking back to the judges. She also sounds the same week after week. And what’s up with Kristy talking back to Simon, Girl, please stop. My top three, in no particular order, is still David Archuleta, David Cook and Michael Johns. David A. has a beautiful, pure and amazing voice, and he’s going to be successful with or without the Idol win; David Cook is an awesome rocker and is bringing it week after week; and sexy Michael Johns is finally starting to connect.

I loved Syeesha, Micheal Johns and Carly. Simon was absolutely right when he said that Carly should start looking like a star. Randy and Paula are rude and childish. They act like first graders when Simon is speaking. Brooke White is so boring and I hate it when she talks when the judges are talking. She has that “deer caught in the headlights” look that drives me mad.

WOOT!!! DIAL IDOL HAS SYESHA AS SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like Ramiele is in deep deep trouble and my vote off prediction will be correct. She is way behind on DI.
David A, Michael, David C and Syesha show as safe, and you can usually take that to the bank, I don’t remember a DI SAFE person ever making bottom 3.
The next group of 4 is so close any of them could be Bottom 3 - Carly, Brooke, Kristy, Jason. But, the vote off clearly appears to be Ramiele, and it should be - she never stepped it up.
I started thinking about who I would buy a CD from and this is what I came up with for me.
David C - Definately, he will be a star on par with Daughtry.
Michael - Most Likely. If he goes with a Bluesy/rock style I am there!
Brooke - Probably. I love her Carly Simon/Carole King folksy vibe and would love to have a “relax mode” CD of her voice.
Kristy - Definately. I am a country fan, and I think she will put out a CD on par with Bucky and Pickler.
Carly - Maybe. Depends on the style. Rockish HEART style music, I would give a listen to and decide. Kat Mcphee POP CRAP and it is a no go.
David A - NO WAY IN HELL. He will be a Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Michael Bolton Ballads from hell snooze fest. Plus he is going to be one of those annoying, into every movement has to torture us with his stupid insipid meaningless political ranting types, who I will despise until the end of time.
Syesha - Probably not. Love her voice, but she will go POP R&B big voice style, and I don’t like that style.
Ramiele/Jason - Cd??? yeah right. But I might here them on my next cruise/Disney vacation.
Finally, PRAYERS FOR DAVID COOK. Having a seriously ill sibling has to be devestating for him, and I hope he can get the stress under control. He can win this whole thing, and I don’t want him to have to drop out because of health issues. Maybe he can take a breather during Idol Gives Back week and recharge his batteries.

I am lovin’ this season! (The talent, not the judges — I agree with Sharon about Randy and Paula! I’m hoping Idol Gives Back week gives David Cook a break, too — I think some of the Idols are heading to New Orleans for the Vagina Monologues 10th anniversary show starring Oprah, Jessica Alba, etc. to help stop violence against women (Simon, hear that?) Not to be flippant, sorry. You can win tickets and see what some of the chicks are saying on the Quest for Feminism at ajc’s cool sister publication: www.skirt.com/vday08.

I took notes again last night while I was watching. But I left my notes at home I was so not awake yet when I left the house! Stayed up past my bedtime hmm, I was on the phone late too. Michael Johns Wow, this bluesy performance was truly awesome! I loved it and he owned the night. David Cook I am a big fan. I think it is silly that they have to keep rehashing the same thing about the arrangements over and over again. Some of the contestants never remix a thing and when it is done, the band guys do it, but do they give them credit? Heck, you should be glad that someone liked what you did. Get over it already. He was really good last night and I liked his arrangement. Carly She did a really nice job with this song. I wish she would quit scrunching her face. I did write down something about her looking dowdy, Simon is right about the way she is dressing. Archie I hate ranking him up there, cause I really cant stand the kid and I just dont know why. I am tired of the oh my gosh, you really like me look with the closed eyes and smacking lips. Does his dad do google searches on lyrics when a theme is announced? Brooke Can she perform without a guitar or piano to hide behind? I wonder, because the one time she did, it wasnt good. This was just a blah performance. And I wish she would quit talking over the judges. Jason I now they are letting them use instruments this year, but I think they are going a little too far with it. I think it could take away from the singing.Jason played it pretty safe againan ok job. Syesha, Kristy and Ramiele this is my bottom 3. I was not surprised that Syesha took on the Whiney Houston song. I was glad she didnt get all runny with it, but if she had kept it soft and didnt go for that big ending, it would have been a much better performance without the Whiney comparison. Kristy and Ramiele? All I can say is YAWN!!!!
Oh my gosh, I just read Monchichi that so fits!!! Thanks Mike S for the good laugh this morning!!!

I just love the way people come in here pretending to comment but finding a way to turn that comment into an advertisement.
To answer Shay’s question from last night, not many of us on here are big Archie fans. I think he’s a good singer but his voice doesn’t really appeal to my taste and his over-hyped popularity with tweens and tween- loving adults wears on my last nerve.

The Vagina monologues anniversary show! LOL!! Hilary should make an appearance, too.
That feminist vagina-fest crap is maybe the biggest insult to women that ever has been produced. I think if they want to reduce abuse of women they need to eliminate shows like this one.
In fact, the vagina feminazi who is responsible for that pathetic propaganda could use a punch in the face from all women who’ve been mocked and laughed at by men because of this misguided, ridiculous show.
Feminists will never be respected by heterosexual men. It’s like a tragic comedy of a movement, unintentionally perpetuating the myth that women are laughable clowns to be patronized as tools for male amusement and entertainment. Mocking feminists is one of America’s favorite pastimes.
Anyway, the Penis Monologue just came out, and it starts and ends with feminist women getting farted on by men who don’t pay attention to a word they say…

I mentioned last week that I think there’s a good possibility that our top 3 finishers will all be male. Last night we took another step in that direction. The 2 Davids along with Michael are standing head and shoulders above the rest of the competition(and believe me, I am NOT an Archie fan) By ‘head and shoulders’ I’m referring to a combination of voice, style and popularity. Those 3 factors have always been the reason people vote.

And BTW, penises have had their own monologue going for thousands of years.
But I kinda DO agree with you on that show. It’s biggest accomplishment, IMO, is that most women are no longer afraid to admit they have a vagina. Other than that, I just wasn’t all that impressed.

Neg! I’m at work, and it’s REALLY hard to keep from laughing out loud. I was SOOOO glad i had NOT sipped my coffee when I started reading your post. OMG….
Back in the late 60s, when all this NOW/Feminist crap started, and I was part of the flower child/’hippy’ period, i had a very liberated gentleman tell me that i was the most “liberated woman” he’d ever known. Flattered, I asked him why (i was NOT part of the NOW group btw) … he said it was because I was free/liberated in my own right, i didn’t need to DEMAND it from anyone, it came from within, leaving me unchained to any group or person to “give” me my status as a “liberated woman”. I’ve treasured that comment for nearly 40 years. I just wish I could convey it to others who constantly protest and fight for validation by others, when all along they truly have what they need within themselves.
ah well, enough waxing philosophical! see you guys later!
AI topical comment: I think Ramielle SHOULD go home; I didn’t like Syesha’s performance (sorry Justin, Mike, Rodney) but she wasn’t the worst. But i think she made a huge mistake taking on that song. It was soooooooo predictable!

Morning folks, Simon should not be an AMERICAN idol judge if he hates anything that is American music i.e. country music. He had me yelling at him last night which is bad for my blood pressure! He needs to understand that the show isnt all about old British rock and boy band music which seems to be the only thing he likes. He is always bad but last night he cut down way too many good performances.

I actually agreed with a lot of what Simon had to say…even though he was obviously Mr. Pouty-face last night. I thought he was right about Jason, Ramiele, Kristy, Brooke, and Syesha. His comments about Carly’s singing were, IMO, off the mark but he was right about the way she’s dressing. She looked like she was serving drinks at The Field(the pub where she works). David A is getting WAY TOO predictable.

Good Morning All!! Just one short question. Was last night just Dolly night or will there be a overall country night? They usually have a country theme where the contestants can choose from different artists and not just one. Oh, I hope they do have a country music night theme and that it wasn’t last night. Although, I did enjoy the show. Dolly is always great. She is at her theme park, Dollywood, quite often in Pigeon Forge TN. I have seen her mix with the crowds and is just as nice as she can be. Two years ago when they opened her new roller coaster, she was in seat one and having a ball. I know because I was on the same train as she was. She is no different from any of us…….well, maybe a little different. But she is a great person.
Getting back to my question, can anyone tell me the answer?
By Deirdre

I doubt that they’ll go back to country after doing a Dolly Week, Menana. As KPH pointed out, we’re lucky that Simon tolerates even ONE country theme. Although he did like God Bless the USA last week…the guy knows not to go too far with his ‘country-hate’.

I think even Simon realizes that and he has become somewhat more tolerant over the years. The first country night was, I think, season2(did they have one the first season, Rodney) and he just about left the viewing area. He said he hated EVERY song and found it difficult to judge the singers when he couldn’t stand the songs. Times have changed from there.
He DID praise some people and some songs last night.

This is not the first time medical issues have come up.
During season 1, Christina Christian collapsed after a performance show and was not able to appear during the results show.
Season 2, Winner Ruben Studdard made it through the season alright but found it difficult to keep up with the schedule after his win. He has since found a weight loss plan that appears to be working for him.
Season 4, Bo Bice made it through the season but admitted to suffering from severe abdominal pains the last few weeks of the season and ended up needing major surgery.
Season 5, Elliot Yamin made diabetes a major topic. Kat McPhee blew her vocal chords just before the finale, requiring cortisone shots to keep them functioning and missed a good part of the summer tour because of it.
That’s all I remember so if I’ve missed any…Help!!!

Thanks D. You are probably right but I would like to see another one. Even though Simon would probably stroke out!!!! He really does need to re-think his stance on country music. I always thought that if you were a music producer, you would need to understand and like all kinds. But, what do I know? The one thing that puzzles me about Simon, what is about CM that he doesn’t get or understand? The lyrics are easier to understand than in other types of music. Maybe its that he has never in his life expereniced any hard times and therefore he has no concept of why a country song deals with heartaches, pain and etc. Although, NOT ALL CM songs deal with matters of that nature. I do know that we Americans like our country music!!!!!

My feelings, too, Shay. As you well know, I’ve always been an advocate of RAISING the age limit. I think, if David Archeleta had tried out for Idol 3 or 4 years from now, we’d be seeing something really special. Right now, although he’s very good, he doesn’t have the maturity to sing the way, say David A or Michael Johns sings.
Can you imagine David A singing the song Michael sang last night??? It wouldn’t have the same emotional resonance or sensual vibe that Michael put into it…( I’m still breathing kinda heavy, BTW) :-)

I agree with the comments on David A. He has a fantastic voice, but maturity is what makes a fantastic performer (as a rule). He is on the verge of being boring, as he always sounds and looks the same. If his dad is truly running things, he ought to get a performance coach for him to help him get that “little kid lost” look off his face and out of his body language.
That said, he is still my pick at this stage for the finals, with David C. and Carly being the others in the mix. This “controversy” over David C.’s arrangements is silly. Idol is and always has been about doing cover songs, so why the big deal on whose arrangement he does? Much ado about nothing if you ask me.

Hey IOE, how’re you doing…and hello again to Captain Herb!
I’m sorry that I can’t agree with you on David A…he’s just not my cup of tea…yet. Love Cook and Johns and Smithson.

David Cook was the bomb on that song. So what if someone else did that version earlier. It took some serious talent to sing it. After all it is a singing competition isn’t it?

Hi Diedre…don’t get me wrong on David A., I don’t care for him either. I only have him as my pick for the finals because I think no one will vote him out. He has the teenybopper crowd eating out of his hand.
My PERSONAL faves are David C. for the guys and Carly for the ladies. David sounds like he should already have his own band, album, and be touring. Carly has a huge voice, though I think she will be the Katherine McPhee of this year, great voice but won’t capture the fancy of enough people to win it all.

Hi, everyone. Just a personal opinion and much too late to do any good, but I think Kristy and Brooke would have done much better, had they reversed their choices. Brooke would have been a natural for “Coat of Many Colors” with her guitar, a la Emmylou Harris, and Kristy could have done an outstanding job on “Jolene.” Just my two cents worth. IMO Ramielle or Jason should go tonight, though I have missed every time I thought I had figured it out. I am really, really, tired of Jason’s performances. He just does not have a strong enough voice for this type of competition. His looks are keeping him going. IMO.

harrietth…so true…you’re absolutely right. I didn’t like Kristy’s song last night at all…Jolene seems much more suited to her.
IOE…I guess I misread you. Yeah, I think the final 3 are going to be guys. Carly isn’t getting a lot of love out there…so I’m comfortable with Johns, Cook and Archuleta in the top 3.

I am confused about Michael Johns performance last night. It sounded very off key and screechy to me, but everyone else seems to be having multiple orgasms over it. I don’t get it.

JT do you like blues? Because Michael’s performance was raw blues/rock fusion. Goes to the “gut” and draws the “good girls” to the “bad boy” who is not aaaalllllllll bad, but sorta bad, lol… the blues adds a “sensitive but macho” touch, i think.
wow, i never tried to analyze blues/rock before, but i think i just did, at least for me, LOL!!!

JT…I p*ssed him off a little while ago and he’s trying to get even.:-)
Neg…go to youtube and listen again. There isn’t an off note anywhere in the song.

Neg, I was too distracted by Michaels movement to have one, let alone multiple, orgasms. He looks like he is doing an impersonation of Taylor Hicks impersonating Bono.

OK, just watched it again to see wtf was going on. Well, it was indeed much better than I originally heard it, but still not as great as everyone is making it out to be. I think I was too tired by the time I caught it at 1:00am, or something. Anyway, he was good, so I take back my harsh criticism of last night.

Um Neg, JT … since neither of you are “good girls” looking for that “bad boy” …. i’m not surprised you didn’t quite get the orgasm thing the way those of us on the distaff side of the blog family did!!!

Im with you Flats, I know where you are coming from on Dolly. I just found it curious that you were asking D. about Dollys big guns. I dont think Deirdre is auditioning for the job of pup expert (I think that title goes to you)

Linny, I just spoke to my sister and she thought he was hot, too. I am hopeful that he might pull in more of the “looks” vote away from talentless Jason Castro so we can be rid of him already.
I mean, Archuletta is getting all the girls “cuteness” under 14 votes, Johns is getting all the women over 18 “hotness” vote, so that just leaves the 15-16 yo looks vote for Castro. Maybe he’s done?
BTW, how about no gay voting block this year for a change - at least since Danny boy and Lap dancer got the boot. Don’t miss that at all! Blake had that gender bender thing going all the way to the finals last year.

Actually, Mike, Melissa McGhee was predicted to be safe on top 12 night AI5 and she was eliminated…but other than that I’m not sure DI safe has been in bottom 3.

For those commenting on Carly’s version of Here You Come Again being a different take on the song from Dolly’s — it is NOT her own variation, other than one change up where she went high. The rest of it is actually the same as Clay Aiken recorded it on his CD that came out in 2006.
