2/20: Top 12 gals, Paula Abdul video
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Okay, here I am, better late than never.
There were plenty of first-night jitters and a few major disappointments, a few high points, a few low points. Overall, a mixed bag. In the end, the men and women are fairly evenly matched, as Simon said. There’s a decent top 12 in there somewhere.
Several of the gals were sick, especially Kristy Lee and Carly, the bookends of the night. It’s easy to pinpoint the two who should go home: Amy Davis and Joanne Borgella.
Here’s how I liked them in order: Asia’h, Amanda, Syesha are the top three. Ramiele, Carly, Alexandrea are my next three. Then Brooke, Alaina and Kady. The bottom three: Kristy Lee, Joanne and rockbottom Amy.
Kristy Lee Cook (“Rescue Me” Aretha Franklin) First up! Horse trainer with the past record contract who sold a horse to audition. She’s not soulful enough for this type of song. It’s very bland. She’s cute but this did feel very amusement park. She ends okay but overall, not great. Randy: “I know the pressure is crazy… it wasn’t your best performance. You had pitch problems throughout.” Paula: “Being sick and first one, that’s a double whammy. Don’t let that get in the way of your shine.” Simon: “This seciton, we get to see what you’re really made of. What did we get that? Not a lot. This song didn’t suit you. Your performance was robotic.” C+
Joanne Borgella (“I Say A Little Prayer” Dionne Warwick) She sang second, a bad spot. The plus-sized model who won “Monique’s Fat Chance” pageant. She is a pretty gal. She reminds me of Mandisa minus the pipes. She has a distinctive voice but it’s not terribly compelling. She simply isn’t drawing me in. Disappointing. Randy: “There are some nerves jumping on this evening. It was pretty good… your voice felt a little shaky.” Paula: “You’ve got to pull it together… I liked it, didn’t love it.” Simon: “I didn’t like it. You’ve got to come out and nail it. What you did there was a very average cabaret version of a cabaret song.” C
Alaina Whitaker (“More Today Than Yesterday” Spiral Staircase”), the youngest contestant. She sang third. She looks a bit like a younger Carrie Underwood. I liked the way she started the song. I’m not so keen on her “louder” voice. But she’s not bad, far better than Joanna or Kristy Lee. Randy: “You sang it with so much conviction and confidence.” Paula: “You nailed it.” Simon: “I think you’re very good. I hated the song though.” B
Amanda Overmyer (“Baby Please Don’t Go” Muddy Waters) The rock-and-roll nurse totaled her car on her way to Hollywood. She seems like a one-note gal with the Janis Joplin voice. We’ll see if she can do something else. Wow! A bluesy song! Great guitar work. How did this end up on the list Nigel created? I actually liked her for the first time. Her hair looks like she stole it from Elvira. Randy: “I loved that. A bluesy rocker chick, doing a little scat thing. I like the trousers, too.” Paula: “I just love everything you do. You’re authentic.” Simon: “I really like you. I like you because I genuinely believe you’re authentic… It was all over the place.” But Paula said, “That’s the song.” A-minus/A
Amy Davis (“Where the Boys Are” Connie Francis) A trade-show model and grad student, she also did Janis Joplin. She started the song really offkey. She is truly pitchy. Bad performance deluxe! Randy: “A lot of country singers scoop up to the notes. Patsy Cline is good. You have to hit it dead on. There were a lot of pitch problems.” Paula: “The camera loves you. Once again, I feel the nerves got a little bit of you. I don’t know if it was the most engaging song for you.” Simon: “It was a very boring song, incredibly cabaret… you need that country twang to make that song work and you don’t have that.” C-minus
Brooke White (“So Happy Together” Turtles) She’s the charming sweet innocent gal with the Carly Simon vibe. She has a very mature voice, not very modern feeling. She’s sweet and likable and that will get her by this week. There’s definitely a personality there, if not amazing vocal skills. Randy: “Front part was not good, back part was good.” Paula: “What this competition is about is originality. You have your own thing.” Simon: “You chose the right song. But there are times I feel like I’m in some washing-up commercial from the ’60s. It was very you. I’m struggling with the relevance.” B/B-plus
Alexandrea Lushington (“Spinning Wheel” Blood, Sweat & Tears) Our Douglasville teen is the seventh to sing. She’s starts very breathy. I like her mid-range but her upper registers are in key but not incredibly strong. She’s very energetic, very together. That’s a plus at this stage. I liked it, didn’t love it. Randy: “You blew the doors off that.” Paula: “You took control of how your entrance would be. You thought about your performance. Dope outfit. I saw more confidence than in any tonight.” Simon: “I didn’t get it. It reminded me of these horrible little shows you see, like some awful musical. I didn’t think the vocals are great.” B/B-plus
Kady Malloy (‘A Groovy Kind of Love” The Mindbenders) A recording studio assistant who can imitate Britney way too well. She’s got pageant-level good looks and her performance is kind of at that level, too. Sigh. Randy: “I loved the Britney thing. This song was okay for me. It was so restrained and controlled.” Paula: “We all knew when we first auditioned you is your personality. I want to see the life of you. Fun!” Simon: “Amazingly, for once, I agree with Paula. That was like night of the living dead.” B-minus
Asia’h Epperson (“Piece of My Heart” Janis Joplin) The gal with the Marietta connection whose dad died really blew me away during Hollywood. Can she do it again? Yes! She’s truly a beacon of light in this fog of mediocrity. She has a spirit that just shines on stage and she has a smoky voice that we haven’t really heard yet in this competition. She’s a keeper, a comer, someone who can win this baby. Easily the best of the night. Randy: “I loved you brought a little bit of you in it.” Paula: “You had some really good moments in that song.” Simon: “For me, it was my favorite of the night. You let go.” A
Ramiele Malubay (“You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” Dusty Springfield) I thought she was a bit overstylized up to this point but she is a looker! She picked a song that Nadia Turner season four owned. (I just watched Nadia’s version on YouTube and that reminded me why I loved her so much.) Technically, Ramiele is excellent. But I don’t feel an emotional connection. I’m not sure why. Randy: “You took your time. It built up. You saved it for the end. Very classy. Almost like a pro. That was hot!” Paula: “You are a force to be reckoned with.” Simon: “I didn’t like you when I first saw you. Then during Hollywood, I thought you were the most consistently good singer. Again, you outsung every single person.” B-plus
Syesha Mercado (“Tobacco Road” The Animals) A working actress, she’s got powerful pipes, even when she had laryngitis in Hollywood. Wow. She chose a rather edgy rock song and gives it a little sexy soul. That last note was a bit off but heck, she really put her heart into it. Phew! Randy: “You definitely can sing. There were a couple of pitchy things. Consistent.” Paula: “Joyful. Fun. Big!” Simon: “It wasn’t your best best performance. It didn’t matter. You are probably one of the most talented girls in this competition.” A-minus/A
Carly Smithson (“The Shadow of Your Smile” Barbra Streisand) Hmmm.. Michael Johns got the crucial last spot Tuesday. Now it’s the other former foreigner with Atlanta connections! This is more proof Nigel & Co. want her in the top 12, come hell or high water. She talks about her past record deal. Wow! It’s out in the open! Did we finally goad them into getting that revealed? Let’s get to it: she’s good. She’s very good, very self assured. Is she my favorite? Not at the moment. Randy: “That’s what this show is all about. I hear you have bronchitis. Guess what. The best vocal of the top 24 right there! Hot! Hot! Blazing hot!” Paula: “You do not even have to power of your voice. Beautiful inflections.” SImon: “I didn’t get it. There is so much hype about you. So much buzz about you. The song was too old fashioned for you.” Thank you Simon for the reality check. B-plus
In other Idol news:
Ratings for the men were 29 million Tuesday night, down only about 1 to 2 percent from the comparable episode a year ago, the smallest gap to date. That’s encouraging for those Fox execs.
Ken Barnes at USA Today noted download sales. “No Air” is the top download among “Idols” at No. 17 and is up to 306K. “Tattoo,” at 25, has sold 1.28 million. Carrie’s “All American Girl,” at 45, has sold 178K. “Before He Cheats,” at 64, has sold a massive 2.17 million. Daughtry has four songs on the chart: “Feels LIke Tonight” at 52 with 133K total. “Over You” at 84, with 878K total. “Home” at 94 with 1.34 mil total. And “It’s Not Over” at 142 and 1.67 mil total. So he has sold four million downloads. Impressive! This on top of his 3.79 million albums sold after moving another 38K (Grammy boosted.). Carrie’s “Carnival Ride” sells another 30K to move up to 1.86 mil and a little more than a month from hitting 2 million. “Some Hearts” moved 21K more and is at a staggering 6.28 million.
Other totals: Kelly’s “Breakaway”: 5.96 mil, “My December” at 751K. Pickler is at 718K, Blake at 264K, Bucky at 325K, Elliott at 494K and three weeks from 500K, Mandisa at 72K, Fantasia at 507K, Bo at 40K, Taylor at 700K, Kat at 367K, Clay at 523K, Ruben at 237K, Constantine at 24K, Paris at 21K and Kimberley at 18K.
And for your enjoyment, the Paula Abdul videe for “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow.” It’s pretty typical as far as music videos go. Nothing special. I’m not sure why it ends with a shot of Ryan, Randy, Paula and Simon.

Not a bad night so far…not sure why the judges were so harsh on the first two. Alaina made herself a contender. What a risky pick by Amanda, but I think she’s great…Amy was just painful!

AS, my opinion will not mean much when it comes to Kady because she was my #1 girl going in. She wasn’t as bad as they made it out to be, but I was expecting better.

Broken record, it seems, every year: girls killed the boys. Not sure who is going home, other than Amy. You know, it could be Amanda, if people out there didn’t “get” it, or she’s just too different.

Well, my Top 3…hmm. Only Alaina actually surprised me. Other than that, Kady was ok, and Kristy Lee looked good. LOL.
I’ve gotta say that Alex and Asia’h definitely surprised me. Syesha reminded me a lot of Tamyra…
Carly is ok, but not overly impressed. Interesting that they finally came clean with her whole record deal. Wonder if they’ll ever do that with Kristy Lee (assuming she survives another week).

Wow!!! Tonight’s performance has me thinking in all new directions.
Carly…sorry guys but in my opinion she was the best tonight.
2.Syesha…excellent
Ramiele…another excellent
4.Kady. Much better than the judges gave her credit for. She has a lovely voice.
Alaina…this girl was the female version of David Archuleta..very good voice and full of youthful exuberance!
6.Alexandrea…Good voice although not real strong
7.Amanda..rocker through and through, worried about what else she can do
8.Asia’h…nice job but her voice doesn’t sound strong
9.Brooke…lovely girl but weak
10.Kristy..how can anyone make THAT song dull? but she did!
11.Joanne..pitchy, weak, boring
Amy..same as Joanne

I have to comment on the judges’ comments that this is the best 24 in Idol history…ya think? I don’t think so…
Kristy Lee Cook- definately surprised by her tonight. I thought she would have done better assuming her record deal…i agree with everything the judges said, i think she was holding back a bit.
Joanne Borgella- I think she did well enough to show us what she’s got next week…wrong song choice though and unfortunately may be gone now.. you know what it is? it’s all these upbeat songs they’re picking that makes them look bad.
Alaina Whitaker- (i keep typing alexander haha) better than the other 2…all i think of is Carrie, Carrie, Carrie! Thank god she doesn’t sound like her.
Amanda Overmyer- I LOVE her voice, but i hated, hated, hated this performance…sorry.
Amy Davis- not great, pitchy in parts, i don’t know…she looks good.
Brooke White- very strange performance, good voice and personality.
Alex (good enough for me) Lushington- she was alright. What’s with all these upbeat songs??? I agree with Simon at this point we were yet to see a great vocal.
Kady Malloy- Night of the living dead? I think not…she’s one of the better vocalists and I think she’s great. What’s wrong with you Simon?
Asia’h Epperson- Thought she did great tonight.
Ramiele Malubay- very good!
Syesha Mercado- LOVED IT! Best for me tonight! One of my favorites.
Carly Smithson- Great vocal, Simon’s crazy.
Overall, the girls are better definately. I think it was wrong to do themes at this stage. I’d rather they pick whatever they want and blow it out the box!

So my order…
Who goes home? Probably Amy… who else I have no idea it’s a tough decision but I’ll go with Joanne… but i like her i just think we need to see her ballad side also… but then again who knows we may see Amanda, Kristy, Alex, Kady, or anyone else go home you just never know… and not only that but NOBODY has busy signals…now i haven’t checked everyone but those that were the best…nothing…

Wow! Tonight was everything last night wasn’t. If they didn’t force 6-6 I could easily see 8-9 Girls and only 3-4 guys in the finals.
One thing did really P.O. me though - the pimping of Carly was sickening. Any more air time and they would have had to surgically remove Randy and Paula’s lips from her A**.
On to the rankings:
Ramiele Malubay - Believe Me - All I can say is WOW. Total package. Beautiful, adorable and an amazing singer. Literally got chill bumps listening to her. AWESOME!
Asia’h Epperson - Take Another Little Piece of My Heart - Amazing vocal. She will be a force throughout.
Amanda Overmeyer - Baby Please Don’t Go - Attitude attitude attitude and a ton of talent. This years Chris Daughtry. Bank on it.
Alexandria Lushington - Spinning Wheel - The amazing talent just keeps coming. Fantastic, great, awesome.
Kady Malloy - Groovy Kind of Love - Totally Disagree with Simon. I thought this was an amazing vocal performance. Perfect tone, exceptional quality. BUT - BORING SONG!
Syesha Mercado - Tobacco Road - All the way down to number 6 and we are still at AMAZING! Thise girl can SANG!
Brooke White - Happy Together - any other year she would be easily top 6 girls. Excellent voice, and just damn cute as hell.
Aliana Whitiker - I love you More Today - Another excellent performance lost in the crowd.
Kristy Lee Cook - rescue me - Good solid performance. I might have had her higher if she went later in the night, but this performance got lost in the awesome performances late.
Carly Smithson - Shadow of Your Smile - Totally agree with Simon. Paula and Randy were apparently reading from thier script because this performance sucked canal water. Carly needs to thank Amy and Joanne for being even worse as they probably saved her from getting voted off.
Joanne Borgella - I say A little Prayer - well i did Pray. I prayed for the torture to end. Not good at all. joanne has shown some talent, but she was totally outclassed tonight.
Amy Davis - Where the Boys Are - The Boys are looking at your modeling pictures and praying to god you don’t sing again.
To me there was a clear bottom two - and Amy and Joanne should leave tomorrow night. BUT, I am sure VFTW will pick one of them, and that may be bad news for Carly, Kristi, Aliana or Brooke.

Mike…Carly didn’t have anymore airtime tonight than any of the other girls. They all got to talk, they all got their intros, they all got to sing. The judges spent more time talking to some of the other girls than they did Carly.
I agree that she got a lot of airtime before tonight, but she wasn’t on any longer than any of the others tonight.
And in my opinion, she deserved praise tonight…she did a lovely job with her song.

Sorry D, I guess we watched totally different shows, because I thought Carly was terrible.
I wasn’t commenting on air time, I was commenting on Randy’s “you are the best singer in the history of the entire universe” lips on her butt blithering, followed by Randy’s trained seal barking her agreement.

My overall take tonight: 1st half very weak, 2nd half very strong.
My rankings.
Syesha Marcado. No doubt about this girl. Holy crap, what an amazing voice and stage presence. I thought I heard a some Kelly Clarkson power in those vocals.
Ramiele Maluba. What a gorgeous voice and sweet personality. She is just irresistible.
Asiah Epperson. Had the first really strong performance of the night. A lot of soul in that voice, but a clear gap between her and the top two.
Carly Smithson. Bronchitis may have limited her top range, but I thought during the Hollywood week she struggled to get to that power octave, too. She’s good, but just not great to me.
5.Joanne Borgella. I liked her performance much better than the judges did.
ALL the rest sucked, so I will not even put them in order.

Mike I’m so totally with you on the Carly thing…hubby watched with me (!!!) and he was almost gagging at the sugar coating… neither of us felt that she REALLY brought it…yes she has a nice voice but not all THAT…
my top 6 girls Alaina, Amanda, Alexandrea, Asia’h, Ramiele and Syesha…. I’m also with you 100% Mike on Amanda - she IS the female Daughtry but with a FUN attitude and personality. Chris was just almost TOO serious about being Chris, if that makes sense (and i LOVE Daughtry don’t get me wrong!). My order for this round, in those top 6, would probably be Syesha first, Alaina-Asia’h-Ramiele tied next, then Amanda, then Alex—i was proud of her overall.
For the bottom 6, I liked Kady’s voice but didn’t like the song AT ALL; I liked Brooke ok but she was a little weak, I’d rank Kristy and Carly about the same, with Amy and unfortunately Joanne (cuz i LIKE her) at the bottom.
but i have to reiterate AGAIN…. having 50 songs to choose from, they really didn’t give them much to work with IMHO. And I STILL think that they should respect the viewers/voters and let us see the choices they had if it’s only 50 songs!!!
There were a couple of songs that just made me gag as much as they did way back when…Where the Boys Are by Connie Francis….. sorry, Amy, just ICK! Groovy Kind of Love was so sugary bubblegummy then, hard for Kady to get much justice IMHO. On the other hand, all that was missing for me on Ramiele’s Bond Movie theme was the silhouettes of girls doing cartwheels, lol! And Asia’h’s take on a classic Janis Joplin was wonderful except for the ending, didn’t like her arrangement there. Loved Syesha’s Rock Out Tobacco Road… Loved Amanda’s pure Rock Lady (a la Benetar, Jett, et al)… can she do more, yes, i bet she can, but like Daughtry, will she dare to KEEP her rock roots visible??? along with her Rogue streaks? (think Xmen)
Better Ladies’ Night than Men’s Night, but still…. the limitations put on them by the song choices DID tell out.
Results should be interesting, to say the least. see you guys tomorrow, i HOPE…. peace!

I purposely avoided reading your comments until AI saw it myself. I loved how divergent people’s opinions were. I was in the middle with Carly. Some loved her, some hated her. And yes, i agree with Mike S that Randy was pimping out Carly way beyond reason. She was good but not the best vocal by any stretch of the imagination! But I’m glad my thought that Amy and Joanne are goners was the consensus. I am definitely in the Asia’h camp and I’m amazed Amanda turned me around.

I was really impressed with two: Ramiele and Syesha. Asia’h was decent, but everyone else was either unimpressive or bad.
Of course I have to support Oregon girl, even though I’m not impressed with her.
Carly… I have never disliked her, however tonights song just wasn’t that great. It wasn’t the best of the night or of the top 24 even if you factor in sickness.

One thing that I needed to ask everyone: am I the only one that thinks it is kind of disturbing that Amy’s parents keep wearing shirts that have her picture on it? I love my daughter immensely, but shirts with family member pictures on them should only be worn by grandmothers.

I agree with Simon that, overall, the men and women are evenly matched. There are some great men and some great women. There are some really bad men, and there are some really bad women. The women definitely got off to a slow start tonight, and Randy’s praise of Carly was definitely over the top. She had the pimp spot, and she failed to impress me. In fact, I thought she was nearly sleep-inducing. Last night’s pimp spot singer, Michael Johns, on the other hand, was superhot.

Morning mushblogians.
Mike…I agree that Randy was way over the top with Carly but he does that EVERY year with somebody and it never makes a difference. How many of us pay much attention to what Randy or Paula have to say?
But to put Carly third from the bottom after Kristy Lee’s snooze inducing, flat and lifeless performance was a little low for me.
Which begs the question…do we dislike Carly because of the pimping or do we genuinely dislike her voice. I didn’t see much wrong with her voice last night that recovery from bronchitis wouldn’t cure.
I agree that it’s hard to separate Randy’s over-enthusiasm from the girl who sings but, is it fair to her if we don’t?
Everytime we start ‘the judges are pimping’ we seem to take it out on the singer. It isn’t their fault. They(as far as I know) are not paying the judges to pimp them. Carly deserves to be judged on what kind of singer she is, not on whether Randy thinks she’s “the bomb” or not.
Should Carly win? That remains to be seen. I wasn’t all that happy with her until last night’s performance, then I really liked her. But y’all might have heard something that I didn’t.
While I thought Syesha and Ramiele were terrific, I was into Asia’h raspy, kinda breathy voice. I liked Amanda a lot but haven’t seen any other side to her. Maybe she’s got one but, my thinking is, she better show it soon. Kady was very good…song choice may have been a mistake. I thought Brook was quite weak last night and I’ve always liked her before. And Alaina was adorable and a good singer, too!

DIAL IDOL UPDATE :
One thing that really stands out, and in my opinion shows the difference in the performance levels — The guys have a tight 3 man group at the top, and a 4 man group that is way behind at the bottom. The girls are so tightly bunched 1-12 that who is leaving is a crap shoot.
Recaps below will be in the order DI has them, but without the DI numbers.
Guys Dial IDOL Recap - David Archuletta, Michael Johns and Jason Castro are SAFE. Danny Noriega, David Hernandez, Jason yeager, Robbie Carrico, and Luke Menard are “technically” in jeopardy, but they have a big enough lead on the bottom 4 that if anyone of them is voted off I will be shocked. David Cook, Chikezie, and Colton Berry are so close to each other it is impossible to say which one of those 3 will be gone, but one of them most likely will be. Garrett Haley is so far behind everyone I have to say he is DEFINATELY GONE.
Girls Dial IDOL Recap - “technically” none of the girls are safe, however Ramiele Malubay, Asia’h Epperson, Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado are far enough ahead that it would be unbelievable for one of them to get voted off. Another group that should be safe, but are close enough to the bottom that they need to really worry are Alexandrea Lushington, Kristy Lee Cook, Amanda OVermeyer, and Brooke White. Now we get to the ones that are really in trouble - Kady Malloy and Brooke White have a slight lead but not enough to breathe easily. The bottom 2 are Amy Davis and Joanne Borgella, but Kady and Brooke are close enough that it could be any of those 4 that is leaving.

Morning Shay and Mike S. Medication??? Are you sick, too, Shay?
Mike, thanks for the dialidol update. I’m a big Syesha fan after last night…that girl can sing!!!! I guess you and I can shake hands and come out fighting next week. Asia’h and Carly have BOTH scored well!

D, I had to have a ultrasound yesterday because I woke up Monday night with what felt like labor on my left side and had to be rushed to the ER. The results showed that there are polyps in my gallbladder it may have to be surgically removed. I have to go see a gastro specialist cause I am running off of medication to get through the day and its horrible. As long as I pop pills every 4-6 hours, I can function but as soon as the meds wear off, I am literally screaming I am in so much pain :(

Oh Shay! I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I’ve known a lot of people who have gotten along just fine without their gall bladders! If they have to do the endoscopic surgery, that’s a pretty quick recovery. But maybe they can fix it without the surgery. Good luck to you and take care of yourself!

Good Morning,
I’ll just cut to the chase. If AI doesn’t stop shoving certain contestants down my throat I will switch over to the dark side(VFTW). It is almost sickening how predictable this show is getting to be. Did anyone have any doubt before the show last night who would be in “the drivers seat” position. Randy almost made me puke while praising Carly for being the greatest thing next to the return of Christ. BARF
Anyway I rank them this way
Ramiele
Syesha
3.Alaina
4.Kady
5.Asia’h
6.Alex
7.Kristy
8.Brook
9.Carly
10.Amanda
11.JoAnne
12.Amy

And I am telling yall A-GAIN. The wrong song choice/arrangement could send you packing. To be honest instead of 4 contestants that did not cut it..its more like about 8. The Happy Together sun shinny toothy smiled sunshine blond with the curly hair, OMG. Lame song any way and it reminded me of Sesame Street. I expected Big Bird any second to tap dance across the stage. The big black girl with the shaky timid voice.(I say a little prayer) again. wrong song choice. You have to have a strong voice or atleast make it your own. she did neither. a huge disappointment..bye bye byeeeee! The dude that looks like Farrah Fawcett with the big curly hair. If any of you would pay to see any of those folks sing, atleast right now..Yall go right ahead. I will save my money for something more Pleasing to my ears. So looks like I will have to continue to buy my artists of the 60s, and 70s. Simon was right, no Wow vocals so far. The males were better, females you “dudes” like Randy as refer you to, need to step up your game or the males is gonna take this one!

Shay, I so agree with you. I don’t understand how Joanne was picked over the young lady with the me handicapped child. I thought Kady was way better than the judges gave her credit for. She is also very beautiful. Did you guys notice the scowl on her face when Simon was critiquing her. LOL. Her Britney Spears impression was too funny. I don’t care for Amanda. Although Ramelle did a good job on her song, I found myself thinking about Nadia Turner’s version from a few years back. I predict Joanne goes home.

I agree Shay…I liked Carly a lot despite the judges.
If Randy wasn’t trying to shove Carly down your throat, WE. what would you think of her then? It’s not HER fault that the judges pick favorites.
By Deirdre
February 21, 2008 9:11 AM | Link to this
I gave up listening to the judges awhile ago! They always pick favorites, then realize, halfway through the season that they’re doing more harm than good.
Randy and Paula say next to nothing and Simon seems intent on being as insulting as possible to make up for the Mr Nice guy he was during the auditions. While I usually respect his opinion, I disagreed with him a lot last night.

Without consideration of the Judges, D, I still didn’t think Carly was all that. I felt that she fit in with (and many of you will wonder why i think this is a negative) the Celine Dion Barbra Streisand model. Now I know both of them are highly successful but… from a different time. Carly’s skills-talent are good. I just don’t prefer how she sounds, and don’t think she’s the right style of singer for what they SAY they are looking for. Big Show, Broadway, Las Vegas Stage performer, she’s got the voice, imho. And i DO like broadway/musical stage singers… just not her particular brand of it. So I’m not a Carly fan, don’t think that she’s the cat’s pajamas, and wouldn’t put her above any of my top 6 (named last night).
I am really sorry that Joanne turned out so…. well for lack of a better word…. mousy! in her singing. I expected a little more…not shouting but belting something out with power. oh well.
Syesha definitely won my heart last night.
ok boss is out today because of his baby having been born yesterday, but that leaves a ton for me to cover for him, so i’ll try to pop in later. (X are you listening? I WILL be back even though I have work to do…i’m entitled to a few breaks!!! LOL)

I think Carly’s song choice last night fit in with the Celine/Barbra crowd but she doesn’t seem, so far at least, to fit that mold. And Broadway? Carly? I don’t see that one at all. She strikes me more as the KT Tunstall type but unable to go there because of the constraints of the theme.
It will be interesting to see what she does in the future because she’s got a good voice but has been saddled with all the personal negatives that the internet has dredged up.
Plus those tattoos aren’t helping her cause either…I noticed they were nicely covered up last night.

After reviewing the dvr copy of the show last night(yes!!! I’m an Idol geek!!!) Syesha may go to number 1 for me. She’s got a great voice and she’s gorgeous. I’m still thinking that Ford commercial could be her downfall but she DID call herself a ‘working actress’ last night.

I see no reason why being in a commercial (as you pointed out, casting agencies for “extras” and “commercial spots” really are VERY far removed from the actual client, in this case Ford) would be in any way a conflict or a problem, at least certainly not even to the level of some contestants’ relationships to the labels and even a judge (Randy) in the past. In that industry, show biz in general i mean, there’s bound to be some exposure if you have done ANYthing at all…. how about Star Search… how about a couple of these people having actually MADE it to Hollywierd in the past; i had thought there was a … what… rule? … that if you made it past a certain point, you’d had your chance. maybe that was on SYTYCD or something. i dunno…. ok…. see you later, i managed to squeeze that in while waiting on hold on the phone…. they’re here…byE!
By Deirdre
February 21, 2008 9:59 AM | Link to this
It’s not so much the commercial as it is the FORD commercial…and the APPEARANCE of a conflict. She’s in my top group, so I HOPE this doesn’t become and issue but..as in politics…the supporters of the opponents are very good at MAKING things an issue.
Morning Shaun!
I’m going out on a limb and predicting the 4 losers tonight(anyone may join me on this slippery slope!)
Going home tonight:
Garrett Haley and Chickezie
Amy Davis and Joanne Borgella
By linny ,,,=^..^=,,,
February 21, 2008 10:31 AM | Link to this
D - question….anyone know WHEN that ford commercial was made? i’d say if it was made and she was paid prior to auditions, there IS no conflict. and i’d BET she was not actually “employed” by FORD, but by some model/talent/whatever agency, paid by the agency. The AGENCY represents Ford, but the employees of the agency are not tied to Ford, if that makes sense. I just don’t see it as becoming an issue. It’s sort of like saying you can never enter a McDonald’s Monopoly contest because you worked at McD’s one summer during high school.
By Deirdre
February 21, 2008 10:48 AM | Link to this
All I’m saying is that it can be used against her by fans of her opponents. And you know how internet rumblings turn into front page news sometimes. There will be some people who see it as a conflict whether it really is or not. It could cost her votes because, as we all know, everybody loves a controversy.
It’s pretty obvious that Idol knows about the commercial and sees no problem. Let’s hope it stays a non-issue…but if she makes it to the top 5, I’ll bet it comes up again.
I think that whatever these people did in the past (with the exception of felonies)including previous Idol experience, should stay in the past. Do we want a good winner or do we want a stamp of approval on their entire lives?

JT, you’re right in your observation about Joanne. While i said i expected her to, that WAS a little unfair — However, her soft sound wasn’t as smooth as I would have expected. In otherwords, if you AREN’T going to be a “big sound” singer, your “soft sound” vocals MUST be right on the money… as mentioned in regard to someone else, if you are going to sing something that is essentially “pure” and “simple” you HAVE to be completely on target! I love Joanne, and hope she stays on the show to show what she can do. But I’m afraid that she didn’t do enough THIS week to remain.
bowing in respect to JT

Linny and D, I agree, there were issues with her performance. For some reason people here at work were expecting another Mandisa, last season must have been really bad because they forgot about LaKisha. If you want the sound of Mandisa go buy her music!

Carly Smithson deserves to be in final 12 even if they are pimping her to recover the millions they spent marketing her. I just don’t think for what they have touted for 6 years as their “target market” she’s right. She’s got a sound that is much more like Barbra or Celine, and i’m not much of a fan of either… but i DON’T see it being a big market item with the upcoming generations, and we all know who spends the most money on tunes! I actually liked the girl that sang More today then yesterday. atleast she stayed true to the melody and the song was recognizable even having Paula comment the “the great Diana Ross sang the same song” Simon didnt like the lyrics nor had he heard of it. I dont know what kind of music he was listening to England but he surely needs to do some research in American Music Catalog. Kind of hard taking his critique as Gospel and he hadnt heard most of the songs before. Still folks are influenced by his opinion. I for one am not. His opinion of Jennifer Hudson and Daughtry proved that He’s Not Always on cue especially for someone who cant even sing a note. He is also bias. Some of the folks he thought was good clearly sucked. But regardless of Simon(its Not up to him now its up to America, thank god for that. Bias opinions are not acceptable.

Thanks Diedre! I know I can count on you to set the record straight! At this stage its hard remembering all the names..also D-dre, I kind of like the Rocker but I hope she dosent sing all the sings in a rock style. Also as Diana Ross would say” her “enunciation” (prononcing words clearly) is not good at all. I could not understand one word she sang. Shes not going to last. She’s orginal and has her own style as a rocker but Unlike Daughtry(who you understood everyone he sang(although he shouted most of them)still his voice is clearly and not mumbled. The scatting she did(Simon) was clueless, I too thought she was making up words or ad libing..funny as hell to me. but so is she..I cant keep a straight face watching her..she makes me smile. I bet she does some type of drugs because she appears to like to Walk/live on the wild side. She show as heck look a lot older then 23! Looks to me like she already been on a rock tour bus! lol..girlfriend looks like she already got several miles on her.Unfortuately the songs she thus far has sang dosent show any type of prettiness in her voice. The asian girl sounds alot prettier and weird sounding coming from an asian. If i wasent looking at her she reminded me of Vickie Carr((60s singer “Let it Please Be Him” not sure of the title of her 1 hit song)she shows promise though..singing calm and eazy until time to raise the volume. Now thats the kind of singing I like. Not screaming shouting, scatting, hollowing, or rapping the lyrics!

I still defend Amanda, our Rocker Girl. It’s harder for a female to break into the harder side of Rock, but she’s GOT what it takes to do so… B-shep, your analysis is always a joy to read! you too caught me totally by surprise with the reference to Vicky Carr, but OMG you are RIGHT! LOL! I agree about Amanda, she needs to show us a softer side, for versatility’s sake… but insofar as scatting and jazz sounds go, it’s what i LOVE, so i’m all for it, and think once again Simon showed what an IDIOT he is when it comes to music.
Speaking of… Simon always puts down most everyone who does “old songs” but… when they give you fifty songs from the 60s to choose from… um … DUH??? And bringing them current — some of them really sounded, dare i say it, “timeless” … they were creepy THEN and still creepy NOW, LOL! I just get so tired of his “i never heard that before” BS. and i get tired of the waffling between “you destroyed the original sound of the song” and “you need to make the song yours”
ooookaaaay. you can have it one way or another, dear, but please make up your simple mind!!!

She needs to bring more to the table…one trick ponies go home early on this show. Like you said, show some range and some variety in her tone. Simon said it at Hollywood about how his concern was he already knew what all her songs would sound like, so she better find more to offer than that one scratchy, nasal rock sound.

WE, there’s no doubt that Randy went over the top in his praise of Carly. I thought she sang very well…”best of the top 24” ? No! But she was good. I questioned Simon’s opinions the whole evening. When he wasn’t being just plain nasty, he was reacting to the songs rather than the singing. When he told Kady she had the personality of a pencil, I wanted to hit him.
I think all the judges were sharing Paula’s meds last night…none of them made much sense.

D.. Glad you enjoyed it. She’s by far one of my favorite authors. I have heard that King’s newest is really good. Why is this posting thing as slow as molasses!!

I’d like to hear Amanda belt out “Alone” or “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. Both somewhat slow (not too “rocky”), but would showcase what Amanda could do with a song other than a hard-rock song. I think she’d actually do well with either.

D-dre, lol..we are on the same song sheet lol..except I must learn to proof read! but i am at work and doing this on a sly! hee hee sheesh! dont tell my boss! You remember Vickie Carr! You go girl! LOL..all I can remember of her lyrics to that song was “Let it please be him..oh dear god it must be him, it must be him..and then I die..thats when I die..weird lyrics..but this was the pot smoking, weed lovers, flower children decade. Where everything was peace and love…after the joint and booze..lol..concerts were concerts back then and no I wasent smoking weed(I wasent even a teenager in the 60s! But I was 7 and 8yrs old when the beatles and Supremes were burning up the charts closing everyone including Elvis out! The years 1964-1966 was SLAMMING! and full of Wonderful Great Great as tony the tiger says GREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT! Singers! Today, I am so disappointed :-( in the vocals..Where have all the pretty sounding singers gone? The girl that sang DUsty Sprinfields you dont have to say you love me..nothing like Dusty but it brought back memories to the song..I know i was about 8yrs old when that song was popular..I wanna say 1965?

I liked amanda’s choice of songs but I don’t think there is anything special about her. The guitar was better than the singing. IMO. I like to pick favorites early on, but I reserve the right to change them. My early picks are known to be bad like last year when I picked Sanjaya Malakar to go all the way. Just kidding

I agree D, Simon is being almost intolerably cruel to some of these contestants, considering it was their first appearance in front of an audience.

I would like to say a little prayer. everybody bow your heads over your keyboard. Please gods that rule over american idol and make simon say crazy things and paula act loopy …please..please let Chikezie and Garret Haley go home and let there be no more sanjaya’s breaking my ear drums every night. Amen

You know, I can put up with Simon’s – not current vs. destroyed the original, sounds too old vs. sounds like a little kid and the wardrobe is not hip enough vs. too hip
What I’m getting REAL sick of is “dawg”, “didn’t bring it”, “brought it”, “you got it going on”, “it was a bit pitchy for me”, and any use of the word “blow.” String those terms together and you have 7 years of commentary according to Randy.

There have been a few comparisons/look-a-likes of some of the contestants to date: Ellen Degeneres, Amanda Bynes, Carrie Underwood, , etc. I’ve got a new one? Ever since I saw CARLY, she reminded me of someone, but until now, I couldn’t put a finger on it. Does anyone else think she looks like a female version of Boy George?!?

A bit pitchy at the beginning, and in spots it just didn’t do it for me, but, I’m telling you what, dog, by the end you were just the bomb bringin home last comment! That was HOT!

JT…I have to admit…. Randy’s very predictable pablum, Paula’s tears-and-or-ecstacy, and Simon’s INconsistency…

They’ll send home whoever the voters didn’t pick to stay. Only real danger there is assuming someone is safe!
Negativo..LOL!! Randy and Paula have never been anything other than window dressing on this show. Simon is the judge that counts and even he is losing his clout!

D-dre..i am with you about Paula and RAndy. both are jokes. Paula is always in a glazed stooper look like shes had too many cocktails. Her and Randy’s opinions are worthless. Paula “Well, you Look beautiful..” Randy: “Look dawg, I wasent really feeling that, you had a few pitch things going..but you Pulled it through at the end!” Oh good grief! Also Randy is not his own man. because sometimes he will change his critique if Simon is really really adamant about someone. Randy has no back bone. Paula is bi-polar. Simon is a jerk and needs to take an American Music Catalog course. Not knowing “the music” disqualifites you from critiquing anyone. He’s much to full of himself. Some of his critique’s I will admit have some substance and he has a point. Some, I totally think his ears are plugged, stuffed, or closed.

LOL and I hate to say this but I’ve got a little theory about Kristy Lee Cook:
Last night she didn’t do very well and was extremely boring. Idol was setting her up to go first and do a very average job. Tonight she’ll be safe anyway and will come back next week and since going first she will close the show next week with an amazing performance and she’ll zoom through to the top and win as everyone predicted beforehand. And all I can say is I hope that’s not quite how it goes!
…Just a though =]

Justin if you remember she had to fall back on “Amazing Grace” in the Hollywood round just to make the top 24. The same song she sang in her original audition. I don’t see her as a front runner at this point at all.
Sorry KF

Well neither do I but based on all the buzz she gets… that could happen next week…to me I find her almost too trained because of all the buzz so I can’t see her as ever being my favorite… but on tv today they ranked Idol fan favorites starting at I believe #5 and counted down and Kristy was 2nd.

Don’t be dissin’ Oregon girl! (Krsity Lee Cook)
I have to ask, who was #1 on the list? And if you remember last year Chris Sligh was a fan favorite, so was Sundance. Chris was lucky to make the top 10.
Ignore the buzz Justin, or it will sting you.
