2/13: The final 24 & better ratings
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The spoiler 24 was 100% correct! (I apologize that this blog has become really strange—sometimes, I post and the commenting doesn’t work!)
They showed only a handful of the rejected this year. Overall, it looks like a solid 24 without a Sanjaya in sight!
We have:
Carly Smithson Hennessy. Yes, the pimped her story out AGAIN (minus the MCA deal, of course). And she cries and cries and cries — in happiness.
David Cook. I’m not that impressed but he’s one of this year’s rocker dudes.
They show a few poorer performances and rejects (Brandon Green, Amanda Hawkins, Buck Smith)
David Archuleta The judges love him and the 16 year old will get the teen vote.
Kristy Lee Cook Miss “Amazing Grace” makes it. She is absolutely adorable. She definitely has the looks. Does she have the ability to tough it out consistently in the vocal department?
Brooke White The sweet Mormon gal gets the thumbs up.
Danny Noriega He strikes me as overrated and a bit overconfident, too. But he’s through.
Three quickies that haven’t gotten much, if any, airtime: Jason Castro, Luke Menard and Atlanta’s Alexandrea Lushington.
Ramielle Maulbay This cute-as-a-button Asian gal with the soulful voice gets through.
Shawn Barrowes is out. (We saw him briefly yesterday). Lorena Pinot, too, is out. Drew Poppelreiter, who we’ve never seen before. He’s a southern boy, that’s for sure. Natasha Block is a goner.
Michael Johns, also known as Michael Lee, makes it through after a strong week. He’s definitely an early favorite. And being a former Atlantan, I will certainly be talking to him in the coming week, along with Alex.
Syesha Mercado, who is this year’s Nadia Turner/LaToya London type, is a sparkling personality with a great voice. I’m looking forward to hearing more from her.
Robbie Carrico is yet another rocker type and he seems like he has the skills based on what limited moments we’ve heard so far.
Garrett Haley is going on. Who is he? Kady Malloy gets a second or two of airtime. She as an early favorite but the “Idol” producers ignored her in Hollywood. Chikezie Ezie makes it, too. Amy Davis, Alaina Whitaker and Jason “we’ve never seen him before” Yeager get yesses, too.
Asia’h Epperson, one of my favorite female singers, is in the top 24. Go Asia’h!
David Hernandez, another one of my favorites, actually didn’t get a unanimous decision. “You’re going to work a heck of a lot harder to have a remote chance of winning,” Simon inexplicably said. What’s that about, Simon? Of course, we only heard one of his auditions. He may not have been as good the other times. I can’t wait to hear him next week!
Josiah Leming, a bit surprisingly, gets the boot. His last performance probably killed him. Poor guy. “I had a bad second audition,” he said. They wring every tear out of him.
They pit the final two guys. There’s geeky Kyle Ensley vs. Colton Berry. Another surprise: Kyle loses. And Simon liked him. I liked him, too. Simon said strongly how disappointed he is that Kyle was not in the final 12 guys. Shame.
Then it’s the two ladies: professional singer Cardin McKinney vs. professional model Joanne Borgella. Joanne makes it through though my DVR cut it off early.
So now it’s time to handicap.
In other news, “Idol” ratings were off 15 to 20 percent every episode year over year until last Wednesday, when the dropoff was a narrower 5 percent.
There was even better news last night, when the show drew almost 30 million, based on preliminary numbers. This is only a 3 percent fall from a year ago, the narrowest gap yet. And honestly, it was probably one of the best Hollywood episodes “Idol” has ever done so kudos to everyone involved.
Relatively speaking, “Idol” has done a much better job developing the potential characters we are going to see in the final 24. Last year at this point, we knew much less about most of the contestants.

OK - the spoiler list was dead on… I have looked up myspace and youtube stuff on the 4 guys they decided we didn’t need to know anything about — Jason castro is outstanding, Luke Menard is very good, the other 2 Garrett haley & Jason yeager are good but forgettable.
anyway here is my stab at how I rank the top 12’s at this moment.
GUYS: 1. Michael Johns 2. David Archuletta 3. David hernandez 4. jason Castro 5. David Cook 6. Robbie Carrico 7. Luke menard 8. Danny noriega 9. Colton berry 10. Chikeze Eze 11. garrett Haley 12. Jason yeager
Girls: 1. Kady Malloy 2. Asia’h Epperson 3. Ramielle Mulabay 4. Amanda Overmeyer 5. Brooke White 6. Syesha Mercado 7. kristy Lee Cook 8. carly Smithson 9. Alexandria Lushington 10. Alaina Whitiker 11. joanne borgella 12. Amy Davis

Michael I went back and youtubed Alexandria and she does sound pretty good.
Where did the dude with the dreds come from? I don’t remember him.
Apparently AI learned from last season and actually put through a strong top 24, with no duds. I was kind of pulling for the nerd boy though.

Morning y’all! I’m excited for the Top 24! Solid year….
Two things: Brandon Greene was the guy with the fingernails. He wasn’t seen in Hollywood, but was one of the rejected last night. Also, Drew the adorable farm boy auditioned in Nebraska and did a country song (if I recall correctly). I believe they showed him on a tractor. A little bummed we didn’t see more of him. But I get the impression that we’ll see some of these contestants trying out again next season.
Now my take on it: Kristy Lee Cook has got to come back stronger. I really like her, but I may be running out of excuses for her. On the radio this morning they were joking that she’d be the one with the “scandalous pictures” a la Antonella Barba. Lol. My girl trifecta has made it: Alaina Whitaker, Kristy Lee, and Kady Malloy.
As far as the guys, mine are David Archuleta, the Aussie, and David Hernandez.
All in all this is going to be a really tough season. I honestly have a bit of a hard time narrowing it down to a top three. I guess we will see how it all unfolds. Oh, and I was so disappointed for Josiah. I’ve heard he doesn’t consider himself homeless and he does see his family every chance he gets. Me? I just wanna give the kid a hug, lunch, and hear him sing.

What’s the deal on Alex Lushington? She hasn’t gotten much air time, and her video on the Idol website doesn’t work. Is this a conspiracy, or is she so good that Idol is saving the best for the competition?
By Pen

I’m disappointed but not surprised that Josiah didn’t make the cut. He did butcher Stand By Me, but it was his doing. I liked that he tried to make each song his own. The fake British accent could have made a laughing stock of the show. I think AI is trying harder this year to be sure that the Taylor Hicks of this world don’t win (I love Taylor)and that the Sanjaya’s don’t get a chance at the top 12. Seriously, he was not good and an insult to the thousands of good singers they rejected to put him in. I like the changes to Hollywood week. Seems less stressful physically for the contestants and therefore, fewer illnesses. But I have to ask why so many lost their father and had near fatal car accidents before Hollywood week. Seems like an epidemic. I don’t have any early favorite, except maybe Brooke White.

Hadn’t watched any of AI yet this year so don’t know if they mentioned this already…when I saw Joanne Borgella’s name I remembered that she appeared Monique’s FAT (Fabulous & Thick) Beauty Pageant when it was on Oxygen Network its first year. She sung on that show too & talked about how hard it was for people to get past her weight & listen to her voice. She went on to win that contest.

Joyce, I’ve been trying to see some of the unfamiliar top 24 but haven’t had much success either.
Pen, I notice that, too…it seemed like an epidemic of car crashes and deaths this year. Anybody who’s superstitious might avoid the auditions next year.
kf, I agree with your guy choices but not the girls. I’m an Asia’h fan and Ramiele and Brook!

I kinda agree with you, Shaun. The kid has some emotional issues that need to be dealt with before he gets into something like Idol. He had a lot of talent but he just wasn’t ready for this show.

My dvr cut it off early. Thank god I dvr’d (is that a word???) Moment of Truth too. It ran a full THREE MINUTES late.
I really liked Kyle and think he was the stronger singer. If they had put through the skinny girl with no pipes over the plus sized beautiful Joanne with the amazing voice, I might have quit watching altogether. But they redeemed a bit of credibility at the end. I still wish they wouldn’t put the last two together. Kinda kills it for the one who does get through. Can’t wait for next week!

suzy, i don’t get “shady” on Josiah, just immature. i don’t think the producers made that decision, i think R/P/S just didn’t think he was ready to face the stress of the competition.
jes8, that happened to me too, and i was freaking out… if the dvr is going to be automatic, then it should automatically stay on until the show’s credits run. unfortunately, unlike you, i wasn’t recording anything else, lol, so i totally missed the end! frustration!
WE, i’m with you on nose rings. the little tiny stud in the side of the nose is bad enough, but at least it doesn’t, so to speak, jump out in your face. and tongue studs….argh! it just truly drives me crazy to see someone talk with one…..shudder!!!

On the previous blog, before this one was working someone mentioned that there were a few people who didn’t get a lot of air time in the audition stages, and thus will probably be among the first to go. He (i think it was justin) made the observation that the winner of the final pairing (this year Joanne and Colton) in years 5 and 6 were eliminated by voters at the 16 mark, prior to making the top 12. interesting observations, wonder how accurate he’ll be on this, lol.
boss is out but he made SURE i didn’t have time to blog much today, so i’ll be in probably lunch time and maybe in the afternoon if i get all this stuff done!
keep warm, and have a lovely day!

I’m wondering, considering the demographics of the show, if the contestants are advised to remove that kind of stuff. I liked Gina last year but every time she sang, all I could see was that stud in her tongue. It distracted me and probably was a factor in my not voting for her.

idolonfox.com is offering a contest. To win 1 million dollars you have to chart the elimination order for the rest of the season. Kinda hard to do without hearing them all sing but my guess for first out would be Colton(unless VFTW decides he’s their favorite)

Thanks WE….I don’t care what anyone says, I see VFTW as a factor in the early eliminations. There are fewer ‘legitimate’ voters during that period and more divided loyalties. I don’t believe that VFTW was the ONLY group that kept Sanjaya around last year. I think a lot of people saw that as a fun joke. However, I do think it was their voters that moved Sanjaya into the top 12.

Hello everyone!
Ok, I am going to go totally off-topic here, but I want to get some opinions from you all.
I am 7 months pregnant (most of you know that already); I got laid off from my job last Friday (our company laid off almost all of the Sales and Marketing team and half the production team-almost 100 people total).
I am going to be sending out my resume and try to find a job before the baby is born. I don’t want to be home for a whole 6 months (the baby is due in May and the post-partum time after she comes).
My question is this: At what point in time should I mention to a prospective employer that I am in the late stages of pregnancy? Should I mention it if there is a phone interview or should I wait and let them notice if there is a face-to-face interview? My gut says that to start a good relationship and keep any form of respect, I should say something during the phone interview, but I wanted to see if that is the concensus.
Let me know. Thank you, AmyG

Just to be strait up honest with you Amy, nobody is going to hire you at 7 months prego. Nothing personal that’s just the way it is. Take it easy and enjoy yourself for a few months.

AmyG - My vote is to say something up-front. When the time comes when you have to go in for a face-to-face interview, the last thing you want to do is appear to be a deceptive person. Your pregnancy (state) really shouldn’t make a difference, but you don’t want to be shot down (discreetly be discriminated against). That could just sadly be a waste of your time. As they say, “Honesty is the best policy.” Good luck with job searching and with your new baby-to-come. Congratulations!

Amy, I’m with you, honesty seems to be the better policy.
I see two questions from the prospective employer being of utmost importance: 1—insurance coverage — if your old insurance will cover through delivery, and the early child wellbeing thing, so that somehow they are not sucked into having to pay for coverage going forward with regard to the pregnancy.
2—a lot of employers are not going to want to hire, train, and pay someone for a couple of months and then “lose” them for 6,8,10,12 or more weeks. Maybe you can luck up on a company (and i pray you DO) that will let you work from home (telecommute) after just a couple of weeks for recovery from delivery, so that you at least keep your “hand in” on the job and produce for the company from home… AND keep an income!
good luck! i’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers … i know you’ll find something “just right” … remember the old “close a door, open a window” thingy :-)
greg, i apologize for the “jerk” comment…. you have to admit you used to do that kind of stuff a LOT, even in the chat format blog, so…. please forgive my assumption that you were agitating again smile(?)
Lumiere — Light — are you just a TOTAL newcomer who has never lurked on this blog before? because we ALWAYS talk about LOTs of stuff along with our AI, and there’s no “rule” that says otherwise… in fact, sometimes Rodney (our beloved host) talks about “other stuff” himself!!! and he doesn’t mind if WE do! so welcome to the AJC AI blog and feel free to kick in with AI comments, other comments, or no comments :-) but don’t jump in and think you can change who and what we are… others have tried, and failed grin
peace! i’m cheating to be here so i’m leaving again! lol… X would love me today!!!

OH, Amy, you WILL be getting unemployment insurance payments right? So at least there will be a little bit of income…I know it’s not much, but IF you can’t find a job, think of this as a time to get your “house in order” so-to-speak, before that youngun makes changes in your world, LOL!!!

Amy…I wish you luck on the job hunt but I agree with Eagle. You may just have to give it up until after the baby is born and then send out those resumes. Your former company sure has lousy timing.
Shaun, Carly was here 2 years ago on a work visa so it’s possible that she was in the Atlanta area at some point.
It’s very hard to get a visa to come here to stay for any length of time. A few years ago, my cousin in Northern Ireland was trying to do it and she couldn’t get approval. Carly is married to an American now so she shouldn’t have any trouble staying.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your insight. The other thing I just thought of is that if I really need to, I could go to work for a temp agency (one of the legit ones that doesn’t make you pay for the service; the legit ones have the company that needs the temp employee pay the service fee). That would probably be my best option at this point in time.

Every one take a minute and give skippy some attention. He has nothing better to do than comment on what we do. Thanks skippy its kind of flattering in a way.
Good luck on what ever you decide to do Amy. I don’t know if this is your first child or not but trust me, when it’s born you will be wishing that you had some time to take it easy.

AmyG - if you don’t want to take care of that baby and just want to dump it in daycare and go to work do it a favor and give it up for adoption. Give it to someone who really wants a child.

I love reading the AI blog. I always get a good laugh, but this is the first time I have commented. I can’t really comment about the show this week, as I usually tape it and watch it on the weekend. (I’m busy at night helping my 8 year old with homework!)I read everyone’s comments at work while I’m at lunch to see what’s going on.

I rather like the new Simon behavior, but then again he may be saving the brutal honesty for the final 10. Would the writers’ strike have anything to do with the format.

Since we can talk about things other than AI, does anyone watch Rock of Love? I know, I know and before some of the “you need a life” comments from Dr Laura come my way, I’ll say that I do have a life - family, job, etc. AI and Rock of Love are my guilty pleasures. Well, lunch time over, unless I can sneak back in like linny cat.

janjun….I don’t believe that the writers’ strike had any affect on reality tv…besides subjecting us to more of it!
I think that Simon and Paula made a deal…he would be less mean if she would be more honest with the bad singers…..she tried to live up to her end of the bargain but didn’t, so the old Simon should be back…and we had some definite hints at that during Hollywood Week!

The “Probably doesn’t have a Valentine…” comments was directed to Dr. Laura (in case anyone wasn’t sure). Dr. Laura - Why would you say something so hateful and heartless?
By Dr Laura
February 14, 2008 1:14 PM | Link to this
The hateful and heartless one is the one who threw her legs open and got pregnant when she wasn’t prepared for a baby. Now it will ebd up in foster care while the mother runs around looking for a job. It’s disgusting!

jes8, being on the front page is a 2 sided sword. On the one hand, we get lot’s of nice people dropping in to chat. On the other hand, we get Dr “I hate working moms” and the gay police!
We learn to be very tolerant here! :-)

I think I am becoming Simon. (God forbid) I am being to critical and cynical. However, I guess if I had to pick a couple of potentials it would be the carly simon blond who looked as if she was about to have a heart attack prior to being told she made the top 24. Poor thing(and the judges were so cruel for torturing those constestants making it seem as if they didnt make it only to be told they did. I guess this is the producers little plot to create suspense. My other pick would be the the rocker nurse/biker/janis joplin/halloween witch/stevie knicks on a bad hair day(she lacks stevie’s witchy unique voice though)however, she is Interesting as I cant quite figger out what the hell she is singing. But she puts her all in it. Like Simon, I hope she dosent sing every single song like(Daughtry) in the same manner. It gets OLD quick. And I aint impressed because he sold a few million cds either. Its quite obvious that there are several Million Rock fans who will flock to that type of music. Personally, I could leave it on the store shelves and opt for something more calmer and soothing to my sensitive ears. Screaming and Shouting just turns me off. Dosent matter if the artist is black, white, male or female. Screaming and Shouting is not good singing sorry :-(. Unfortunately for me, None of the top 24 make me wanna go Wow! And cant wait to buy their cd! I dont think so. Over 100.000 contestants and this is all they can come up with? Sad, really. Lastly, I am so Over Jordan Sparks. Shes just a pretty face with a loud voice. For me her voice is NOT distinctive. Thats whats missing out of the contestants. No one has a stand-out distintive voice. Even Clay, Ruben, Fantasia-ALL had distintive voices even if they didnot not Burn up the charts like Kelly or Carrie or Daughtry who also has a distinct voice. Leaves me limp. But in the words of Paula, She looks pretty though!

Thanks Rodney, Happy Valentine’s day especially to MS and BS with gigantic {{{{{{{{valentine hugs}}}}}}} to everyone, regardless of how tasteless and boring you are!!!
Dr[eaded] Laura: Amy never SAID she didn’t want this child OR that she’d dump it right into a child care situation… she SAID she’s 7 months preggers and was LAID OFF from the job she’s BEEN at… and wondered what to do. For ALL ANY of us know, she’s planning on staying home after the baby is born!!! we’re just offering opinions TO her on her CURRENT situation. And even IF she IS going back to work, my hubby and I traded off hours so SOMEONE was ALWAYS home with our baby, so get a life, get a brain, and if you can’t just go dig your foot into someone ELSE’s …. oh neverMIND… you wouldn’t understand ANYway!
why do i bother????
