2/3: Paula’s Super Bowl video, Katharine McPhee marries, Gone Country recap, Spoiler 24
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
DJSlim has posted the new video for “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow” from the pre-Super Bowl show Sunday night.. It’s been more than 10 years since she’s done anything like this. Hmm.. the most interesting things were seeing Randy on stage and that microphone that bounced back up like a Weeble. Paula’s dancing was distinctly underwhelming though she looked great. What did you think?
I thought Jordin Sparks did a lovely job with the National Anthem. She was clearly nervous but her performance was spot on. (A friend of mine thought she lipsynched it, but I didn’t see any evidence of the sort.)
Season five runner-up Katharine McPhee Saturday got hitched to her 42-year-old producer/boyfriend Nick Cokas, according to People.com. Kellie Pickler and Mandisa showed up. (Where’s Taylor? Hah! I can’t imagine those two having been friends…) The photo is taken by Mark Sullivan of WireImage.
TVSquad.com has fished around the Web for past histories of the Spoiler 24, as I’m calling them. (Kinda like the Oceanic Six on “Lost”!). It’s not surprising that “Idol” appears to be working hard to erase a lot of video evidence of contestants’ pasts, including their MySpace pages. Kinda irritating too.
Here’s TV Squad’s take on the top 12 girls..
And the top 12 boys.
Good job!
And Entertainment Weekly has their 12 favorite “Idol” auditions of all time and it includes a few folks I loved early on but didn’t quite pan out as well as we had hoped such as Brandon Rogers and Amy Adams, plus the usual suspects like Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia. But guess who landed on top? Paris Bennett! Indeed, that first audition was incredible. “Where have you been hiding?” Simon said.
Now onto “Gone Country”: Bobby Brown drinks too much, sleeps in while the other six are assigned to cook a downhome meal for John Rich’s grandma and his buds. they shop, Brown sleeps. Diana DeGarmo is a bit annoyed with Brown. Clearly, those two aren’t bonding the way Brown is with Maureen McCormick. But Brown apologizes and helps out with the cooking. All is forgiven. Some are bugged when Julio Iglesias Jr. takes a nap during food prep. Carnie Wilson leads the cooking and all goes well.
Then the seven are taken to a honky tonk called Fuel and play their biggest songs. Diana does so well singing “Dreams” that Carnie’s jaw drops, Carnie is a bit nervous and shaky with “Hold On,” Sisqo is a bit weak on his “Thong Song” (blaming the band for playing the wrong key), Julio does his dad’s song “To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before” with Rich and pulls it off, Bobby Brown rocks the house with “My Prerogative” and so does Dee Snider with “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” Brown starts interrupting Snider, who gets annoyed and the two alpha males almost go at it. Maureen McCormick chickens out and doesn’t sing. Promos for next week feature Bobby drinking too much again and a visit to Gretchen Wilson’s ranch/farm.

So Kat actually married that dinosaur. I suppose we should be happy for her?
I’m lovin’ Gone Country, Rodney. This week’s episode was fun. Diana DeGarmo’s definitely grown up since Idol. I can’t believe Maureen McCormick was making excuses for Bobby Brown’s drinking. Diana was right in saying that he put it on himself. She was really likeable in this episode and not overly perky at all. She doesn’t seem to have vocal issues with her lower register anymore either. I know she’s not going to win, but I am really am cheering for her after watching this episode.

Congrats to Kat…. (Blah)
Ive watched both episodes of Gone Country, and Ive actually enjoyed them.Being a Diana fan to begin with its great just seeing her on tv again, seriously though for those who havent seen or heard Diana since idol the girl is really really good and she really is a sweet person. im hoping she does a country album with or without the win of this show, she should of Gone Country to begin with!

Congrats to Kat!
Thanks for the TVSquad stuff, Rodney. it was very interesting.
I haven’t seen gone country yet but can just imagine! Maybe I’ll just fast forward to the singing.

Nice comments on Gone Country Christina and Jeff.
D, it is a pretty decent how. You should check it out.
My thoughts are that Marcia Brady should have been kicked off the show for not singing on stage as the others did, and for being just plain annoying.
Bobby Brown is getting the bad boy rep. because of his drinking. As a life long country music fan I can assure everyone that alcohol is part of country music What country fan out there can’t name at least ten drinking country songs? So let the man drink.
I’m liking Diana to win just because I think that she would be the only one that might have a chance to be taken seriously in country music.

War Eagle, I take your point in that everyone should be allowed to drink, but at the same time, if everyone was serious about this competition (which they’re supposed to be), they shouldn’t be drinking to the point where they’re unable to function the next morning when they’re expected to do things as a group. With one person not pulling their weight (Bobby at the beginning or Julio later in the day), it affects the others. I don’t know if the others would’ve had a problem with his overdrinking if they didn’t have anything to do that day. That’s my take on it anyway. I liked that Bobby apologized and am rooting for him to come across as likeable (he does most of the time on the show), but judging from the previews for next week, I’m not sure this next episode will help him out.

I agree about the drinking to the point of being useless.
We need to remember that this show just like any other is going to show us what they want us to see.
How do you feel about Marcia not singing? She should go. Why should be a singer if she is scared to get up and sing?

On Gone Country. Diana may be the youngest in the group but she’s clearly the most mature. I wish they’d let us hear more of her song.
On the drinking…considering that the host of the show hardly ever appears without an adult beverage in his hand or by his side, it would be pretty hypocritical to complain about Bobby Brown’s drinking. However, watching him is like watching EVERY addict. First they do something bad, then they beg forgiveness. He’s a master at begging forgiveness and everybody else needs to stop giving it to him.
Carnie needs to calm down and relax.
Julio is a non-entity so far…he even had John doing a duet with him rather than doing his own solo.
Dee Snyder is still crazy!
I like Sisqo!
WE is right. If Maureen isn’t going to sing, what the heck is she doing on the show!?

All these reality shows stock their mansions with free liquor in hopes folks drink so they do crazy stuff that can be dutifully captured on camera. It kind of annoyed Carnie Wilson, who has stopped drinking. And you know— Diana is still a few months shy from turning 21!
I wasn’t that impressed with the Paula video. There seemed to be a lot action and attempts at energy from the crowd. Let’s go back to “Opposites Attract” or “Straight Up” for great videos!

FOX is advertising American Idol during the Super Bowl by showing the GOOD singers!!!!!!! Maybe they finally get it!!! We watch the show for the good singers…not the bad ones!!!!! I think I just used up my exclamation point quota for the whole week. :-)

I mentioned this earlier but did anybody see the ads for Idol on the Super Bowl? They showed scenes from the Hollywood round with contestants playing instruments and it looked great. I predict higher ratings next week.

And while I have the floor…Paula’s performance at the Super Bowl kinda reminded me of a toned down Britney..it lacked that trailer trash appeal that Britney does so well but it just felt like a Britney song. Paula did ok, not much dancing, vocals were so so. My favorite part was the ‘weebles wobble but they don’t fall down’ microphone stand.
Bottom line…I think she’s lucky that FOX carried the Super Bowl or her come back might not have happened.

LOL….come back may be “came back and went away again” i just don’t think it was all that, sorry!
D, i’d logged off before you posted the 2:30 GC note….dang! so i just guess i missed it all around, unless they stick it in one day/night during the week….i think i should probably set it to automatically record on the dvr and just delete them after viewing…
Rodney, yes, it’s known they stock those houses with the temptations, and i don’t mean the old singers! it’s unfortunate that “reality” tv thinks it has to always search for the negative to keep audiences happy … just like AI’s loser-wannabes. oh well.
Hubby and I couldn’t find a movie we wanted to see, so we did a rain check on that, went to dinner, then he took me out shopping for my [FINALLY!] first digital camera :-) I think it’s cuz he wants my old 35mm, but that’s ok, LOL! My Canon 35 is a great camera, i had lots of lenses and stuff, so he is welcome to clean it up and enjoy it! i hope he does, i spent a lot of moola on that thing a few years back (um… well more than a few!)
anywho, the whole birthday weekend was overall really nice, laid back, and in the end, surprising, LOL! thanks for the wishes!
dance wars tonight—i think that Carrie Anne will be losing a team member tonight, so the teams will once again be “even” … we’ll see.
time to work! got to do the stuff necessary to close out January so we can open the books to February….
later, gang…y’all have a nice day!
p.s. my fave commercial was the Clydesdale/Dalmation trainer one… but my close second was the Sobe LifeWater dancing lizards…. that was just FUN!
and…YAY GIANTS and Eli!

I forgot to say how happy I am that the Giants won!!!! That was a great game.
I loved the 2 talking baby commercials and the Macy’s balloon fight…..imagine having Charlie Brown come out the winner! I also like the Clydesdale commercial with the Rocky theme. Justin Timberlake’s commercial was fun, too.
Sorry you couldn’t find a movie you liked, linny, but dinner and a camera sounds just as good as dinner and a movie!

Oh, and P.S. Rodney re: lipsychning… anytime you watch someone singing in a stadium, chances are you will have a nano-second delay, so you get the impression of lipsynch… but i did not think she was; i watched closely for it, in fact. with digital, you will find that happening even in just straight reporting sometimes, just a teeeeensy lag… and i was very impressed that she didn’t OVERsing the Anthem, but was pretty smooth throughout; even her “belted out” portion wasn’t screamed, like so many others would have — and have — done!

And while I’m in a chatty mood, I forgot to mention what a good job Jordin did with the National Anthem. I’m pretty sure she sang that live…unlike Paula. She was way too nervous before the performance to be lip-syncing.

WE…did you think it was strange when the Patriots coach left the field? Isn’t he supposed to go congratulate the winning coach?
By War Eagle
February 4, 2008 10:34 AM | Link to this
No D, I didn’t think it was strange. I thought it showed how little class Bill Belichick has. The Pats have been so arrogant this year after they were cought cheating. They thought they were untouchable. While they had a great year it will be soon forgotten because they didn’t win the one that mattered the most.
With that said I have watched alot of football in my life and I must say that the pass from Manning to David Tyree with one minute to go might be the best I have ever seen. Manning avoiding the sack and then the tremendous catch by Tyree was just amazing.
If anyone wants to watch it again

I have to agree, WE…Hubby was working last night. I told him about that pass when he got home this morning. Not only did Manning escape what appeared to be a certain sack…but Tyree caught that ball and held it to his helmet cuz he couldn’t lower his arm without losing the ball…it had to be one of the most amazing moments in sports…the touchdown that came after was almost an afterthought! Thanks for the link…I can show hubby what it looked like now.
On Belichek…I was willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt until I watched him leave the field without a word to the opposing coach. Low class, if you ask me.

I thought Jordin lipsynched because there was a point where the vocals moved but her lips didn’t. Even though I was pretty sure, I asked a co-worker, who called “a former AI contestent/runner-up” who confirmed it.
Besides, Jordin had too much swagger to be singing live at such an event. Not nervous at all?!? Yeah, right.

I know for sure…apparently you didn’t see her right before she walked to the microphone…she looked like she was going to puke, she was so nervous. And how on earth would a ‘former contestant’ know whether Jordin lip-synced or not? I don’t care whether she did or not…singing in a huge stadium is not easy and often the sound is heard after the singer….if she lip-synced, it was for good reason….but I’m still not sure she did.

I know for sure… Thanks for the information. Since you have a inside connection let us in on some more secrets. And don’t hold back!!!!
I thought Jordin looked pretty in the face but a lady that has arms the same size as her neck just isn’t appealing to me. I know she is young so maybe it’s just baby fat.

It’s all for the cameras. If the cameras are there recording her “pre-show jitters” why not put on a show? And really she still had to know the words and perform her act of singing.
Deidre, it’s not about what I think…it’s about what I know.
War Eagle, I don’t ask questions normally but I just really wanted confirmation of that lipsynching. My co-worker gets bombarded!!!

I’m glad you KNOW but, I don’t know you so, if you don’t mind, I’ll wait for someone to confirm it. She may have lip-synched, she may not have. Whatever, she did a great job with a difficult piece of music…and, other than the standard stadium ‘visual vs sound’ delay, she sure didn’t LOOK like she was lip-synching.

I’m not sure what you mean. I’m not trying to offend you…it’s just that we’ve had a lot of people come on claiming to have ‘insider’ information. We don’t automatically believe everything we hear. And, really, there’s no way for you to prove that you aren’t making it all up. Again, not trying to offend you, but explaining why we react the way we do sometimes.
I mean, it would be easy for me to claim personal knowledge of something without actually having that personal knowledge. My best friend is Jordin’s mom’s sister…something like that.
All I’m trying to say is, I don’t mean to offend you in any way, it’s just that I have no way of knowing that you’re being truthful. Just like you have no way of knowing that I am being truthful.

Hey Guys, not that I like Bill Belichek, but he and Coughlin met in the middle of the field when the Patriots conceded with 1 second left on the clock. The officials then had to clear the field of fans, photographers, and players for that final second to be played. So, he actually did go out and congratulate the Giants, he just did it before the “official” end of the game.

Loved the episode of Gone Country. Diana Degarmo was great. Enjoyed the funny scenes of the cast in the supermarket shopping for the food and then preparing the food. The food looked very delicious. Diana’s performance of Dreams was superb.
