1/30: Miami American Idol auditions
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sorry to be late on this. I was doing trivia night at the Local. My friend Jim and I were using our “bar bucks” from a previous miracle second place finish. Although we started well (3rd place at halftime), we fell apart in the second half and ended up in dead last among 21 teams. Our last attempt to salvage ourselves failed when we couldn’t come up with the two James Michener novels titled after foreign countries. (I got “Poland,” missed “Mexico.” Jim had no clue.)
This was actually a pretty darn entertaining hour. They showed another high number of good singers (nine) and that clueless “American Juniors” alum inadvertently provided some of the most sublimely funny moments this season. My favorites: Ilsy, Brittany, Suzanne and especially Robbie.
And we won’t soon forgot the first gal, memorably known now as the burping butcher, Shannon Broughton of Okeechobee, Fla.. She will also be known as the over-singer after that excruciating first note of Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby.” (Then again, Janis’s version isn’t markedly different at the start.) “I had a late night last night. You just made me feel a lot worse,” Simon. “That was like the Hungarian Janis Joplin.” She then started singing another song. “It sounds like you’re eating while you sing,” he said. “Your mouth is doing weird weird things.” Paula said: “You have melody problems.” “Wow, I’ve never had somebody tell me I sing bad before,” Shannon said. “This is crazy to me.” “Most people don’t actually know what they’re talking about. That’s why you have to meet people like me,” Simon said. She’s in shock, genuine shock. Her mom’s in more shock before. “She never heard no before,” said Paula, who is about as mean as we’ve ever seen her (relatively speaking.)
Robbie Carrico, one of the spoiiler 24, from Melbourne, Calif. has style, panache, and a great voice. “You got a nice voice. It was kinda cool,” Randy said. Simon’s on the fence but says yes. I liked him a lot more than Randy or Simon. Go Robbie!
After the commercial break, a cavalcade of unnamed crappy singers beckon. Then there’s gypsy music singer Ghaleb Emachah from Miami, who isn’t half bad but not great either. He ruins the upper end of Marc Anthony and it’s over. “I’d like you if I was drunk,” Simon said. “Sober, I don’t think it works.” Paula says the strong accent is problematic, then gets annoyed by Simon. Randy says yes. Wow! Simon says no. Paula is acting odd, then says yes and hugs him. Huh? How did this guy make it?
Best pal combo: Corliss Smith of Jacksonville first. She’s not quite there in the looks department but has a quality voice, working over Randy. Brittany Wescott is better, much better. She’s radiant. She sings to Simon, who even claps along! Both make it!
Fantasia story alert: Suzanne Toon, 21, of Clearwater, Fl., had a daughter two years earlier and is a single mom. She’s a bit rusty and teary-eyed. “I’m sick of struggling,” she said. She has something about her that’s special. “A seductive voice,” Randy said.
Jasmine “remember her?” Trias callback: Ramiele Malubay of Miramar, Fl. wants to be the first Asian-American “Idol” and actually has a good voice. “You are a fine singer and fine performer,” Paula said. “I don’t think you’re a contemporary singer. I think you’re more like a hotel singer,” Simon said. (It’s nice to see the mean Simon for a change.) Despite a no from Simon, she makes it through. She is yet another Spoiler 24 we may be seeing again. I liked her, didn’t love her.
Sob story: Syesha Mercado has a drug-addicted dad recently out of rehab. She’s also a spoiler 24! She has a fine voice and a vibrant personality. But I agree with Simon that she seems a bit overwrought. And she does “Think” by Aretha Franklin as several prior contestants have done (Kat, Diana, LaKisha and Fantasia, for instance.) I feel like I’ve seen it before. Oh, well.
Natashia Blach works “At Last.” (Shouldn’t that song be retired?). Ilsy Lorena Pinot is amazing! What a smile! I love her!
Wow. Nine good singers in 40 minutes? That’s got to be a record.
Ben Hausbach is abysmal. Carroy Bethea is, as Simon said, over the top. Grant Rhea sounds like a gal. Fabienne Hyppolite was plain annoying. Ditto with nasally Richard Valles doing Rascal Flatts.
Then there’s an “American Juniors” flashback, not that anybody even watched that show. (I didn’t.) Simon sarcastically says he loved that show to the contestant Julie Dubela, who was a top 20 finalist from that show. She doesn’t have a clue that he’s being sarcastic. In fact, she even demonstrates the song she sang on “American Juniors” to the other contestants. Hilarious and frightening at once! She’s got some polish but it feels very stage theater. “Have you ever been called precocious?” Simon asked. “What does that mean?” she said. “Overrehearsed, overdramatic,” Simon said. She does the desperate second song while they are talking. Simon suggests she become an actress. “It’s over,” he says. Wow. SImon’s rough! “Overindulged,” he adds after she leaves. The producers are classic by showing her singing “Rainy Days and Mondays” from “American Juniors.” That was one of my favorite audition bits ever!
The final guy makes a ridiculous entrance. Brandon Black of Pompano Beach does “I’ll Make Love To You” then cuts to an original: “I’m the next American Idol.” This is one of those absurdist auditions. “The audition was verging on desperation,” Simon said. “The weird wig. The horrible dialogue. The terrible singing.” Simon and Randy leave. B-bye.
Only 17 made it through Miami, the least of the six cities so far. The final tally now is we’ve seen 48 of the 142 Hollywood-bound contestants and 10 of the 24 supposed finalists. Atlanta is the last city next Tuesday. Based on what we heard, they condensed auditions to just one day here and Randy, Paula and Simon saw fewer than 50 people. That’s not a good thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if fewer than 20 people made it through from our fine city. We’ll see in six days!

Moving this over from the Kelly blog to get things started.
Tonight was one of the best audition shows in a long time, in that they showed a lot of good singers and kept the clowns to a tolerable level.
Little Miss Sunshine from American Kids needs to get a serious reality check. She is very talented, but she needs to lose the DIVA attitude and I am glad the judges took her down a lot. YO MOMMY & DADDY, quit giving the brat everything she wants on a silver platter — learn to say NO and make her grow up a little!
Now on to the important stuff — 17 Golden Tickets given out and we got to see 9. First time we got to see over half of a cities pass throughs. Also, there were THREE people who are on the leaked top 24 list. Not sure how people feel about that, so I will not name them.
There were 4 GREAT SINGERS tonight in my opinion -
Robbie Carrico - Finally a good male (!st since Michael Johns) Belts out an awesome Simple Man by Skynyrd
Brittany Westcott - The one that likes Ryan. Beautiful voice.
Ramielle Malubay - Close to the best singer so far. Asian beauty and cute as a button. She gets Two FLATS up for sure.
Syesha Mercado - Good back story with recovering addict father. Great voice, but sang a little too loud for me. Needs to tone it down.
The rest that got through were good, but not really great to me. Ghalieb - accent is a big problem, but may have a career as a latin singer. Corliss Smith - Nice understated Jazz song, but not sure she can go out of that niche. Suzanne Toon - Good, not great. Natashia Blach - Nice voice, but nothing special. Ilsy Pinot - another good but nothing special singer.

Well, I guess pointing out the people on the TOP 24 spoiler list is OK since Rodney did it in his post. :-)
Anyway the three we saw tonight are Robbie Carrico, Ramielle Malubay, Syesha Mercado.
Of all the shows MY top 5 at the moment - Robbie Carrico, Kady Malloy, Kristi Lee Cook, Michael Johns, Ramielle Malubay.

Beautiful World –James Morrison
I’ve been down so low people look at me and they know, they can tell something is wrong like I dont belong, well, staring through a window standing outside there just to happy to care and I wana be like them but I’ll mess it up again, I tripped them out when God kicked outside everybody’s soul.
And I know that it’s a wonderful world But i cant feel it right now, I thought I was doing well but I just want to cry now, Well I know that its a wonderful world from the sky down to the sea, but I can only see when you’re here, here with me.
Sometimes I feel so full that it just comes spilling out, it’s uncomfortable to see I give it away so easily, but if I had someone I would do anything and never never never never let you feel alone I wont, I wont leave u on your own, who am I to dream, dreams are for fools, they always let you down.
And I know that it’s a wonderful world But I cant feel it right now, I thought i was doing well but I just want to cry now, Well I know that its a wonderful world from the sky down to the sea, but I can only see when you’re here, here with me.
And I wish that I could make it better, I’d give anything for you to call me, Maybe just a little letter Oh it could start again.
And I know that it’s a wonderful world But I cant feel it right now, I thought I was doing well but I just want to cry now, Well I know that its a wonderful world from the sky down to the sea, but I can only see when you’re here, here with me.
I know that its a wonderful world but I cant feel it right now, Iv got all the right clothes to wear i just wana cry now, I kno that it’s a wonderful world from the sky down 2 the sea, But I can only see well when ur here, here with me.
And I kno that it’s a wonderful world When you’re with me.

Morning mushblogians!
WE, thanks for the lyrics…it almost felt like old skool Friday for awhile! :-)
I actually appreciated last night’s show for it’s near lack of total crazy people and it’s abundance of people who made it to Hollywood. Thanks AI!

RC, I got it pretty good this quarter. I only have one class on Tuesdays. The teacher is pretty cool. She is one of those “talkers” so we get her off the subject all the time. She loves American Idol so I use that to kiss up to her. I can brown-nose with the best of them when I need to.

Morning y’all and WE! :)
I love James Morrison’s voice. I keep meaning to check him out, I need to.
Um, Rodney…I watched American Juniors. Yes, yes, I am properly ashamed. LOL.
Anyway…if ATL is next the last stop, what goes on Wed? Hollywood?
Oh, and if anyone (other than me) cares, the video of Kelly’s interview should be on q100’s website today. :)

So, who’s excited for Lost tonight?! I watched last night with the “infobar” that was pretty handy. :)
Heard about Britney. Here we go again. She’s just not over K-Fed.

KF, I wish they had the infobar on every episode. Maybe then I could some sense out of what is happening. I’m looking foward to the new season, but they need to start answering some questions because watching this show makes me feel dumb.

KF - Atl is the last audition location show. Wednesday will be a “RECAP” show - in past seasons it was dedicated to all the horrible auditions we didn’t see in the 7 audition shows.

kf, I taped last night’s Lost rerun so that I could watch it today…there’s only so much I can remember…so I figured I’d need help getting to the season premiere. It’s one of the few shows that actually makes your brain work instead of staring blankly at the tv with drool on your chin!!! :-)

Ok. I took the chance and watched AI although I was skeptical after last weeks disaster. Frankly thusfar, I feel the males have better quality(the few that got through minus the obvious bi-polars). Sorry, the females need Lots of work. And if I hear one more Black female scream and screetch like a mountain lioness I am gonna throw something at my set! (and this is not a racial dig as I am quite Black myself). Syesh Meccado(One with the dad on drugs) let loose a scream that cut through my ear drum like a knife. I did not like it, I did NOT think it was pretty at all. The female that sang at last(lower key, not screaming, better control)sound much more pleasent. The guys sounded very soulful, their voice tones much better then the females. One guy from a population of 200? a little goofy, had one of the best voices out of all the males. Ladies, quit the screaming Please. We dont need anymore Aretha’s, Patti Labelle, Christina Agalera’s, Janis Joplins or female Screaming Jay Hawkins! give the screaming a rest. Sing like your singing to a baby, calm and pretty. If you scream at a baby, the baby will wrinkle his/her face and cry because your too damn LOUDDDD!@. One last comment..Simon told one guy to “come back in a dress..” That was Priceless, OMG.

Morning Mushbloggians!
1 -i’m pretty upbeat today considering this is the last day i can answer the “age” question with “oh, i’m in my 50’s”….
2 -thoroughly enjoyed last night’s audition show from Miami (well ALMOST thoroughly, MIss Juniors was soooooo freaking annoying!!! and that last guy…what the @%&)? And D, you can have the Aussie, i’ll take Robbie!!! mmmmm mmmmmm … oh wait, that’s obscene in light of the previous note grin
3 -hello to everyone, especially those who haven’t visited in a while! RC it’s good to see your smiling face … how’s that lovely wife of yours? i was so impressed at the little article about her teaching! teachers ARE heroes to me. Mike, i love your analyses, every time!
Amy, kelly, WE, D, greg, and others who’ve popped in today…. hope you all have a GREAT day! i won’t be around much… boss and co-workers are taking me to lunch a day early to celebrate… so i have to work doubly hard to be able to take a long one, LOL!!!

Linny, hope you have a GREAT Pre-Birthday! Enjoy some time away…

RC, Most of my profs understand that as evening students we are generally older and more mature than the youngsters that attend during the day. The majority of us work full time jobs and have a family to take care of, so I think they take that into consideration. But like you said there is always that “one” that gets their jollies by throwing their authority around.

I am so with you on Britney’s dead mission to end up in a body bag. SomeTHING is definately wrong with this girl(Woman). I say girl because Like Michael Jackson, Britney became a Big Star a little pass 15? 16? a millionare atleast by 19. Too Much Too Soon, not ever experiencing lifes lessons, growing pains, thrusted into the Spotlight, growing up in a Fish Tank. Its no wonder these folks self destruct. The media is about 75% to blame with her mother being the remainder 25% what a sad sad ending to a girl who once had it all. Ok. almost all, as she never wowed anyone with her Voice. She reminded me of the “once” child star on AI last night who didnt make it through because she was so over dramatic the judges felt she would be best as an actress. She was so full of herself she was actually stunned they rejected her. Yup, she would make a fine actress if they need someone to play a loony toon. She should revive the old movie “Whatever happened to Baby Jane?” Did you all check out her doing her preteen act when she once hosted a show? OMG. She reminded me of an updated Bette Davis in Baby Jane who dosent realize her act as a child is long dead in the water..she cracked me up going through all of the theactrical movements..LOL.even revamping her old childhood act for the other contestants in the lobby who looked at her like “yup! girlfriend has lost it!” I damned near choke from her expression when the judges said, No. Sister girl was in shock. Crossed her eyes like Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest as she left the AI talking to herself. My god that hilarious. Those contestants have SERIOUS mental issues for sure. They should rename the show “Loony folk who Think they can Sing”

BlackShep, I agree with most of what you said up there, except for the fact that with Britney being a minor, Britney’s mom deserves 65% of the blame, the media deserves about 20% of the blame, and Britney herself deserves 15% of the blame. She is now an adult and has to be liable for some of the decisions she has made. But, like I said, her mother deserves most of the blame because she should’ve been there protecting her daughter and teaching her how to make decisions that would last her to adult-hood. The media is in the business to make money and as bad as it sounds, they do not have a responsibility to make sure other people’s children are raised properly and do the right thing. They love it when people go off the deep end - MORE MONEY FOR THEM. But, that is just my opinion.
