1/23: Charleston American Idol auditions

Sadly, the “Idol” producers didn’t show us much that was good from South Carolina. Jefferey Lampkin is probably the only one I’ll remember by the Hollywood round of the four we saw who got the Golden Ticket (and one of the four was Jefferey’s not-as-good sister.) And why didn’t the Air Force gal get through? Huh?

Instead of starting with good singers like last night, the puppet masters opt for “characters.” First up is afro-man Raysharde Henderson of Atlanta (first Atlantan we’ve seen so far!), who compares himself to Clay Aiken. He’s just over the top and as noted by Paula, theatrical. It’s a no.

Then there’s the rather unpleasant-looking waitress DeAnna Prevatte from Kellie Pickler’s hometown Albermarle, N.C.. She’s rather intense, but not in a good way. “I like the anger and the passion,” Simon said, but it’s a no.

The Idol fans: awww… it’s love. Crystal Ortiz and Randy Stark of Abilene met through the “Idol” message forums where he supposedly doles advice about the audition process. They were clearly put there for back story, not talent. She’s actually not as bad as he is but he got more airtime. “That was a horrible audition,” Simon said. “The good news is you found each other.”

Sibling hallelulah!: Michelle and Jefferey Lampkin!! They are actually pretty good and possess a lot of spirit, especially Jefferey. “You were the bomb,” Randy said to Jefferey. Randy says yes to only Jeffery. Paula says yes to both. Simon, shockingly, says yes to both, too. He said he couldn’t split them up. What sweet tea did Simon drink in Charleston????

Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” is the unfortunate “group” song.

Gimme an A!: Cheerleader Amy Flynn tries to channel Christina Aguilera, a risky move, after a speech about, like, abstinence, like, totally. She’s, like, cute and has an interesting, raspy voice. She’s just different enough to cut through. “This isn’t going to be quite so thumbs up, Amy. I personally thought the song was too big for you,” Simon said. “A lot of people are going to find you annoying. You are very confident and I don’t think you’re as good as you think you are.” She’s through!

zzzz…: London Weidberg, 24, from Charleston, is a professional singer and she’s not bad. Kinda dull. “You have a nice tone to your voice but not the best song,” Randy said. “There are thousands of singers like you,” Simon said. “I didn’t hear anything unique.” I agree with Simon.

Fly, Lindsey, fly!: Air Force C-17 pilot Lyndsey Goodman is the latest back story. She’s gorgeous and is in the military. Can she sing, too? She could use some work but she has potential after doing a pleasant “Black Velvet.” “I liked it. Had a couple of pitch things,” Randy said. “I’m concerned your nerves,” Paula said. “It held you back.” “I think you are a very good cabaret singer. I don’t think you are a contemporary recording artist,” Simon said. She got ousted! I’m shocked! Oh, well…

Queen of Delusion: Aretha Codner, named after Aretha Franklin, says she’s as good as Fantasia. She goes for Whitney — big mistake. She’s decent but clearly not good enough. She misses some big notes, too. “The funny blue dress. the huge belt, the screaming. It didn’t work and the singing was terrible,” Simon said. “It is amazing,” she said. “I stop crowds.” “You mean the crowds disappear?” Simon said. “Come on. You seriously murdered the Whitney Houston song.” “No… I thought I did a great job,” she said.

King of Delusion: Joshua Bosin of Beaufort S.C. goes all Jennifer Holliday on us —if she were a guy and really awful. “This show is faked and rigged,” he complained. “My talent is too big for this competition to hold,” he later proclaimed.

Tara Smith comes by and sucks. So do a bunch of others. Oliver Highman, 27, of Cornelius, is a new daddy whose wife had a baby the first day of auditions. He makes it to day two. I can’t get past the fact he looks like a Merrill Lynch stockbroker. And his voice is all over the place. He gets a no but he does show off his baby. And he takes the rejection just fine because, heck, he’s a dad!

In the end, 23 made it through. We only saw four Hollywood-bound folks. We also saw 9 “no’s.” So 106 contestants are off to Hollywood after four cities. We’ve seen 30 of them. (Mike S— tell me if I got that off-the-top-of-my-head count correct!)

I’m kind of annoyed. 23 made it to Hollywood from Charleston and they only showed 4. Why? It seems they wanted Charleston to look bad. The good ones that we saw weren’t that good. The bad ones were just boring.

I CANNOT believe they said yes to Jeffrey’s sister Michelle and no to that nice Air Force pilot.

London was ok..nothing special.

And the little Dance Team girl named Amy…wasn’t nearly as good as the new daddy.

What were the judges smoking in Charleston!?

With apologies, here are my stream of consciousness notes:

Charleston!

Lame Black Eye Peas intro…..

Oliver Highman - another Phil Stacey moment. “My wife’s in labor…gotta go!”

Ryeshard Henderson - Wow, holy 70’s, the look, the hair. He calls himself “The Black Clay Aiken” Sings I can’t Make You Love Me…and he’s decent. Simon says he does reminded him of Clay. They tell him to find out who he is, it was too teatrical (Maybe he should look into being the understudy for Spamalot?). Not ready and doesn’t make it.

DeAnna Prevatte - From the same town as the Pickle! LOL. Goes on about Kellie: “If I lose you I’m more likely to walk around with a baseball bat than red high heels.” She’s a waitress complaining about the Sunday crowds because of the new “All You Can Eat” specials. She does Fancy. Simon “It was a bit angry…must be the Sunday people.” Doesn’t make it. (I’m starting to see a trend tonight.)

Crystal Ortiz and Randy Stark - met on the ai.com’s message board. Ah, geek love. Ew. They audition together “She’s More.” It is a train wreck. Randy gives advice about auditioning. That’s funny. Congrats on the love, but go home.

Michelle and Jeffery Lampkin - Wow, gotta have that “OW” factor. My ears do, thanks. Why does he have a tie around his head? Singing I’m Your Angel. And I’m surprised, he’s actually fairly good. His sister’s just ok. Both are through!

Oh, lord….the group sing is “Before He Cheats”! I really like that song…but I’m questioning that now. “I’m gonna stomp on his car, ‘cause he broke my heart.” I must’ve missed that line.

Amy Flynn - Dance team captain. (She is 16). Talks about abstinence to other kids. Ok, inappropriate comments about Simon needing to be abstinence. She gets off into her speech. It was cute…sort of. Sings Reflections, it was ok, but I wasn’t blown away. Simon says that a lot of people would find her annoying. However, she is through.

London Weidberg - Charleston native, fairly pretty. Her dad died of cancer. Sings Billie Holiday’s Good Morning Heartacke. Fairly decent tone. Good voice, but not unique. I agree with Simon there. She’s through. Don’t think she’ll survive Hollywood week.

15 people made it on day 1, we only saw 4. Boo.

Day Two…..

Lindsey Goodman - Air Force Pilot….flies C-17s. (She is the Roswell native). She’s fairly pretty, nice blue eyes. Sings Black Velvet. Her breathing’s off, but she’s got a decent voice. She doesn’t make it,

Aretha Codner - Whoa! (Since we had the black Clay Aiken, can she be the black Dolly Parton?) It’s hard not to stare. Sings I Have Nothing. It wasn’t good. She insists that she can sing. She gets a unanimous no, but she keeps arguing…and getting on my nerves.

Joshua Boson - The only good thing about this whole thing is his outfit (the UGA colors). Other than that it’s painful..and no, I’m not gonna love you! Sorry! He says the show’s fake ‘cause he got cut. He storms off right before they even say no. Keeps going on and on and on. “Artists-es?!”

Tara Smith - No idea what she sang…no.

The medley of “no’s.” Lots of bad singers in Charleston.

Oliver Highman is back. His wife had a little girl, Emma Grace. I like the name. He busts Get Here. Started ok, but went into too much. Doesn’t make it. He’s a really nice guy and his baby is adorably cute. I kind of wanted him to make it.

They picked a total of 23.

Next week it’s Nebraska. (Here’s hoping for some farmer’s daughters, WE!)

OK that was a totally underwhelming disaster. We got to see a whole 4 - FOUR! - out of 23 golden tickets. And they weren’t even a WOW 4. GRRRRRRRR

Anyway one gem - Jeffrey Lampkin - could he be the next Rueben. He has one heck of a voice, and seems to be a goofball. He could be a fun contestant.

Michele Lampkin - not as good as her brother, will probably get lost in Hollywood.

Amy Flynn - simon nailed it, she thinks she is a lot better than she really is. But, she is through so we shall see.

London Wiedberg - nice girl, decent voice, but nothing special. Will need to bring it up a lot in Hollywood

TRAVESTY OF THE YEAR - How in the He** did Lyndsey Goodman not get through — the lady could SANG!!!! And she was hot on top of it (definate stiffy factor in Flats speech). Anyway, I am really p** off about this one.

Not quite as upset about Oliver, he did have some major vibrato, but I thought he was worthy of a golden ticket.

All in all a very dissappointing night.

we have now seen 30 of 107 golden tickets. (you were off by one Rodney) :-)

That London girl is pretty fine lookin’ haha… I’m sorry but I actually weirdly though Aretha was good… I know she missed some parts and sang in different keys, which was very strange, but I thought they would have given her another chance definately… plus she’s from Bufflo, not too far from my town!! Well… maybe an hour and a half

Thought it was an interesting show — and you could see that they didn’t care about talent but good TV. Lyndsey Goodman definitely should have made it through.

Check out her my space page with ID of lyndseyc17 myspace.com/lyndsey17 It has her story and behind the scenes of what you don’t see from the editing. Black Velvet wasn’t even her original song - of course you never see that or that they asked her to do a second song.

Good Morning All!! I must admit that I was dissapointed in last night’s show but I guess since it was in the south I expected more based on previous years. Hopefully Atlanta will give us more.

I agree that Lindsey should have gotten through and still wonder why Michelle did but I have also questioned a few other of their decisions.

Did anyone one the show after with the lie detector? There is not enough money in this world to make me go on that show and answer those questions. That first guys wife was not in the least happy with him after the fact. Guess it goes to show how much greed there is in the world.

Good Morning everyone! I am getting so peeved that they don’t show more of the good ones. I know that they want to show the bad ones too, but aren’t they dedicating a whole show to that later on? I wish they would just get over the bad/tacky/attitudinal coverage and show those who actually deserve it!!!

Mitch, when they asked him if he had ever touched any of his clients inappropriately and he said no, I couldn’t believe he lied and had actually done that. And apparently his wife didn’t know that he would want her to get lipo or that he hasn’t had kids with her b/c he doesn’t know if she is the one. THAT’S DIVORCE!

OK after last night I am thourghly convinced that AI is just stalling for time(just to boost ratings) in that it appears now they are showing buffoons, idiots, bi-polars, multi- personalites(guy/girl with the fan)and folks that are headed for a straight jacket. Some are too ridiculas to be funny. They now they cant sing, their family and friends know they cant sing. Fat black girl with blonde/red afro. Hot mess. Brother and sister act, I disagree with the judges, I have seen a better performances on the street with people clowning(Apparently Paula, Randy and Simon and myself have Different hearing, they werent that good to me, actually the Afro guy from atlanta had a better voice then the fat boy with his sister, afro guy had a better tone but he was to Over the top with the falling down on one knee(how corny)If he was a so called clay akien, Clay NEVER ever went over board in his gestures, he simply stood and sang without moving a muscle, effortlessly. To me thats a Real singer. Will someone Please tell me why some of the worst sounding worst looking folks is getting so much air time and the ones that appear to have a lil sumptin rarely even get showed you only see them coming out with a yellow slip jumping up in down but you dont get to see their audition. Last night I was so bored with it I called a friend(840pm)talked about how bad the contestants have been the last two nights and turned off my TV by 8:50pm. The producers could very well have skipped over last night. Total waste of electric, just downright awful. I may skip next week because I feel AI is milking its fans.

Morning mushbloggians!!!

That show last night was a disaster…The wrong people went to Hollywood!

And that lie detector show…what happens when contestants start naming them as a correspondent in their divorce cases?

I have a cousin arriving today for a weekend visit. I’ll pop in as often as I can but mostly, I won’t be around until Monday. I’ll probably get on Sunday after she leaves and write everything I wanted to say for 2 days.

By Deirdre

January 24, 2008 9:06 AM | Link to this

Shay…I think that question about touching clients more than necessary. I’ll bet that’s something trainers worry about all the time. It seemed like an ambiguous area. You HAVE to touch your clients, obviously, but there must be a very fine line between just enough and too much. I can see where a lie detector would have trouble distinguishing between his worrying about it and him actually doing it.

B-shep…my thoughts exactly…what the heck was wrong with the judges and Nigel. Even the bad ones were boring…they said no to people they should have said yes to and they said yes to people who shouldn’t be within 2000 miles of Hollywood!

morning mushbloggians…. agreed. Charleston audition SHOW was a disaster, and i cannot believe that the entire audition period there was as bad as they made it sound :-(

and I agree… Lindsey should have made it through. travesty!

to newcomers (and the rest of us) on this blog re: multiple postings — one way to avoid this is to press “post” once and wait about 5-10 seconds, then hit your “refresh” button. That will clear your entry while it is going through the AccessAtlanta (AJC) process [which CAN take up to 5 minutes, they are not lying], but will not leave it on your screen to THINK you never posted it! While the button says “please wait” it WILL post the entry again and again for each time pressed. So clearing your screen is a good way to avoid the temptation and impatience-factor, LOL!

D, you beat me to the comment about “inappropriate touching” … what is fine to one person might be NOT so fine to another, and worrying about if at some point you were inappropriate might affect the lie detector. There IS a reason that LDs are not considered appropriate, and thus inadmissible, for trials!!! A number of questions could be misinterpreted by the LD… would you give a kidney to save your father… well… maybe. probably so in my case but there could be circumstances when it would not be the right thing to do. do you think you’ll be married in 5 years… have you ever considered killing someone? um …YES… but i wouldn’t DO it! i admit i refused to watch the show… after just what the commercials had, it was already too much for me to tolerate…i’d have been screaming at the TV,lol so i watched Criminal Minds … and L&O:SVU of course.

Thank you thank you Diedre. I know my posts are a bit rough to read many times, but it didnt take a rocket scientist to realize AI is duping its viewing audience. As you clearly stated, folks they said No to, they should have said yes, folks they said yes too werent that good at all and I would not pay 25cents to hear sing. a whole 50cents would be highway robbery. Speaking of 50cent the rapper, I wouldnt pay 2cents to hear or watch him peform. As far as his namesake, HA! 50 cents is wayyyyyyyy to much to spend on the likes of him Yuck! oh oh, guess I will loose my black card and be kicked out the black race for saying that..as you can tell I would be so broken up if that happened! And if you believe that you would also believe me and Hillary are fratenal twins separated at birth even though she is white as day and I am black as night.

I liked the show except for the damn woman voice that tells if the answer is a truth or a lie. The pauses are just too long. It slows the show down too much.

The thing I didn’t like about “Moment of Truth” was all of the pauses and the music and the “high drama”. I could only watch about 15 minutes of it before I just had to turn the channel because it bugged me so bad. I promise I am not going to be all negative Nelly today. :)

War Eagle. I have to agree on that woman’s voice. At one point, while I was waiting to hear her say’true’…I changed the channel! I think a lot of people will do that eventually. But..the questions are sleazy but riveting! You actually want to hear what these poor schnooks will say.

By MItch

The thing about the show is they do know the questions ahead of time. They do not know the exact questions that will be asked on the show but they were asked 50 questions in pre-screening and the 21 (or 22 depending on the family’s help) will come from that 20 questions.

The producer was asked how he felt about producing a show like this and people blaming him for the possibility of splitting up families. It is rare but I did find myself agreeing with him. He replied that they do know the questions going into the show because of the prescreening and they choose to come on the show anyway. He went on to say they the show just asks the questions that it is the behavior of the “contestants” that put them in the position that they are in.

There is not enough money in this world to make me go on that show but some people do have “$$” for eyeballs and don’t care who they hurt to get it.

I have to much respect for myself, my family & my friends to ever go on a show like that and air my thoughts and actions that may or may not be appropriate.

By Deirdre

January 24, 2008 10:07 AM | Link to this

I guess, if all you think about is money…it doesn’t really matter what the questions are. Do they families know the questions ahead of time…I know they have the option of not getting an answer but that’s just for 1 question and the next one could be even worse.

Seems to me, if you have a solid relationship..you know the answers anyway. At least to some of the questions. But I guess everybody has secrets and the show is obviously trying to find out what they are.

i draw the line at the kind of show MoT is… people NEED to have their privacy, it’s not just something they want… to me, even if you agree to be on the show, it’s a violation … a sort of emotional/psychological assault. Not so much at the personal, even family level… just think of all the opinionated, bigoted, self-righteous people who might decide to persecute someone because of an out-of-context answer on such a show!!!! It happens all the time just with the regular BS in the media!!! half-truths, out-of-context quotes, misquotes, papparazzi, … soon we will be truly living in glass houses!

I was interested in watching but I would have to agree that they will lose a large percentage of their audience because the show is too slow. 6 questions to win $10k. I can work at McDonald’s and get that quicker than it takes on this show. Yes, the lady’s voice is annoying and it takes forever. Yes, they know the questions ahead of time but they don’t know if they passed or failed the question on the lie detector so the guy who was asked about touching his clients inappropriately didnt’ know he failed that question during the lie detector test or he would have answered it correctly. And the family does NOT know the 50 questions. I think alot of families will be hurt from the show and there will be negative publicity about it after the first few weeks.

I tend to agree with you, Shay. And why would people put themselves in that position in the first place? People are different everywhere…they do things the rest of us may find foolhardy…then they end up on a slippery slope and can’t get back to where they really wanted to be.

“The Moment of Truth” has become my new favorite show. Lots of drama, although I could really do without the OVERLY drawn-out pauses. Especially, when the contestant answers an easy question that “works in his favor” and he takes FOREVER to answer the question. I’m sure they’re told to do that though, because when they’re eventually faced with a difficult question (one that’ll make them sweat and make them look like a “bad” person), a “true” pause will automatically give the answer away. I was actually looking forward to seeing the segments from the clips they showed on the commercials, but I guess that was to initially draw in an audience. They’re saving them for future episodes to keep the audience tuned in. Worked for me! Very entertaining show, but it most definitely will stir up peace and harmony in relationships. They have to expect that going into the show though. Well, looking forward to next week’s show…sadly, moreso than the AI auditions.

I found this little article on “Gone Country”

Wednesday, January 23, 2008 – John Rich, Dee Snider and Carnie Wilson of CMT’s new reality show “Gone Country” rang the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange today. As Rich walked the floor on what has been a rollercoaster on the market the past few days, he heard “Yee Haw!” and “Welcome to our City!” from the NYSE stock specialists.

“Hitting the gavel at the New York Stock Exchange and closing out the day with the stock market up over 300 points was exhilarating,” said Rich. “My heart was racing, and my blood was pumping. Not a bad place to wind up for an ol’ country boy.”

The bell ringing was part of a two-day media blitz for “Gone Country.” CMT’s “Gone Country” premieres with a special one-hour episode on Friday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. eastern/Pacific.

The premiere episode of “Gone Country” will air across other MTV Networks, including VH1, TV Land and MTV2. Rich takes seven established performers from every realm of the entertainment and music industries, including Bobby Brown, Wilson, Snider, Diana DeGarmo, Julio Iglesias Jr., Maureen McCormick and Sisqo and immerses them in all things country for a chance to break out as the next big country superstar.
