1/22: American Idol San Diego auditions
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s kind of nice to have only one hour of auditions but it also means we see even fewer of the good singers. In fact, we caught just six of the 31 who made it to Hollywood from San Diego. We also saw 10 bad singers. So we’ve seen and heard 16 of the 83 who have made it through after three cities. Of the six good ones, I liked Tetiana, Michael Johns and Samantha the best. Carly was good but she really is too professional for my taste. Been there, done that. Maybe the whole WSJ story thing colored my impression. You can see why the “Idol” producers left that out but it is kind of lame that only those of us who read and write these blogs know about her background.
Arrogant? But good: Tetiana Ostapowych of Venice, Calif. is stunningly beautiful, looks a bit like the receptionist in “Ugly Betty.” Her voice is lovely but Simon says she is only good, not great. “Obnoxious,” Simon said.
Heartwarming story #1: Perrie Cataldo of Phoenix is a single dad with a four-year-old son whose mom died in a nasty, unspecified way in 2005. He’s got some presence and his take of Boyz II Men is a bit over-boiled with the vibratto but he’s certainly good enough for Hollywood.
Michael Johns, 28, of Los Angeles (originally from Australia) has the looks and the pipes to make it to the top 50. In fact, if the spoiler page is correct, he is.
Wow! Three good singers to start off. This must mean a lot of bad ones to come.
Here they come: Marat Hayrapetyan wears an absurdly frilly white shirt. Christopher Mitchell is no Ace Young. Tehilla Lauder just kind of slays them with vibratto. Then there’s the copycat Mariah Carey lover. Valerie Reyes has some of Carey’s breathiness and vibratto but none of her vocal strength or tone. Then the high notes come and breaks glasses across the country. “The only resemblance to Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey’s CD left out in the sun for a year, then trying to play it,” Simon said.
Then the gimmicky singers—Joseph (dressed in a Mexican poncho) & Juanita Mejia (doing a mime deal). Joseph actually wasn’t half bad but a gimmick is a gimmick. Monique Gibson ruins a Whitney song, then dared to try Mariah. Ugh! Then her friend Christopher Brown also screws up Whitney and wouldn’t shut up. He gets escorted out, thank God.
Love thy Simon: Samantha Musa is a Simon obsessive and her sis sits on his lap while she does Aretha Franklin. She’s a beaut and she’s actually a good singer. “I thought it was a great audition,” says Simon.
Try, try again: Then there’s the “idiot” who did the Statue of Liberty in season five and came back. Blake Boshnack of Long Beach, N.Y., who has tried out 11 times, did a decent, almost desperate “Stand By Me” and the judges didn’t stand by him at all. Simon tried to get Paula to say no and she wouldn’t say it.
Alexandria Ruiz got a no. Sarah Long was incomprehensible and was compared to William Hung (“The biggest insult ever,” she said.) Then a bunch of no-name sad folks. Fan-holding, shy Alberto (“Singing is the ultimate rebuilding of my soul”) Hurtado looks like a nightmare in the making before he even sang. And his biographical song was indeed horrid. “The most depressing song in my life,” Simon said.
Dreadlocked Aaron “Leave Me Alone” Garrett was dismal.
Emotional story alert: David Archuletta is a man who has had partial “vocal paralysis” and does John Mayer reasonably well but isn’t quite good enough. He might get a sympathy vote. “You have a really good voice at 16,” Randy said. “I think you have a nice tone, mature for your young age,” Paula said. “I agree with Paula and Randy. A great choice of song,” Simon said. Yup, he got the sympathy vote. (According to MJ’s site, he won Star Search when he was 12.)
They end with Carly Hennessy (who is called Smithson, her husband’s name, on the show). She auditioned in Vegas season five but couldn’t get a visa. She was also the source of the Wall Street Journal story about a singer MCA spent $2.2 million on and she sold only a few hundred CDs. This latter info was not included to the audience. Anyway, she’s back and quite nervous. She also added a monstrous tattoo on her right arm since 2005, probably influenced by her tattoo shop owner/hubby (who has tattoos on his face!) Vocally, she’s a pro and it shows. “That wasn’t as good as two years ago,” Simon said. I thought it was okay but she didn’t move me at all.
Good news: with only one hour, they didn’t bother with the “group” sing.
And here’s Kellie Pickler on Ellen DeGeneres performing her third single “Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind.” Thank you DJ Slim for your work on taping it! For once, Kellie keeps her pups in check. She looks great! This song is skirting the top 20 and it’s not half bad!

Looks like Kellie lost that extra weight she put on some time back. She will probably be the most successful of the season 5 contestants behind Chris D. Whoda thunk it?

Ha, alright, WE! I will make the sacrifice of being in the lookout to report back. LOL!
Never would’ve thought the Pick would be so sucessful, but there ya go. I saw her open for Rascal Flatts, and she was pretty decent. I think she just needs to get a bit more polished, but that’ll come in time.

kf, that video Rodney has up shows the ‘polish’ is being worked on…much improved from the last time I saw her. I’ve never been a fan of her voice but she definitely has the personality to pull off a halfway successful career.

Here’s my lame Idol Recap:
Tetiana Ospatovich - pretty and blonde but…..eh, nothing like we haven’t seen before. There are prettier and better already (i.e., the trifecta of Alaina Whitaker aka Carrie-lite, Kristy Lee Cook, Kady Malloy)
Perrie Cataldo - single dad, sings Boys II Men’s I’ll Make Love To You and I liked it. He’s through. And, his son is adorable.
Michael Johns (australian) - Sings I’ve been Loving You too long. I really like him, he’s a looker and his accent is hot. Predictably, he’s through.
Tehilla - Tila’s long lost cousin! (and just as bad, so she obviously didn’t make it)
Valerie Reyes - a Mariah Lamb…that needs to be slaughtered! it’s painful to listen to. and she’s not making it. Thank goodness for small favors.
Mariachi and a mime….seriously? Seriously.
Monique Gibson - Singing Whitney. Hell to the no! I believe in miracles too…and mine is for you to stop! And she leaves in tears, so I kind of feel bad, but it’s not like she can hear me. So it’s ok.
Christopher Baker - I believe the children are our future…teach them well, and let them lead the way. Out of the audition. He doesn’t get the hint and even security has to come and guide him out.
A sign that made me laugh: “I can make Ryan look tall”
Samantha Musa: She’s pretty in an average way, has a major crush on Simon and she’s does a fairly good Aretha. And she’s through….
Blake Boshnack - Stand By Me. He’s auditioned about 10 times since season 3. And again he doesn’t make it.
Alberto Hurtado Idol’s biggest fan. S-C-A-R-Y. A pretend hippie with freakishly long nails. I know it’s the token really bad audition, but wow, can we make it stop?! He sings an original song called “Live” or maybe he meant “Leave?” It makes more sense. Simon calls it the most depressing song, I agree! I’m depressed. He didn’t make it, I’m shocked!
Day Two….(still no truly hot chick, WE!)
Aaron Garrett - Singing someting with the line “Leave me alone…” over and over. I’m thinking yeah, please. Obviously doesn’t make it.
David Archuleta - 16 year old who suffered from vocal paralysis. Sings John Mayer’s Waiting on the World to Change. And Randy’s being the backup “Waiting!” It was cute, and he has a good voice. He’s through and adds the cute boy factor.
Carly Smithson - Irish. Auditioned for Season 5 (in Vegas), but she got cut cause of Visa issues. Sings I’m Every Woman. She’s got a good tone, but sounds like she’s trying too hard. And she’s through (she was on the spoiler list).
30 others made it…and that’s where they kept the pretty girl, in the medley of “You’re Going to Hollywood!” Boo. But it looks like the pretty factor is going to be pimped out in Charleston tomorrow.
No one tonight really caught my attention…other than Aussie Michael Johns and David Archuleta.
By Mike S
January 22, 2008 9:20 PM | Link to this
Well to say that tonight was underwhelming is an understatement. We got to see ONLY 6 of 31 that made it from San Diego, and none of the 6 was an OH WOW performer.
Tetiana Ostopewych - Pretty girl, decent voice, but nothing special
Perrie Cataldo - One hell of a back story. Has a good voice, but was a little oversinging, and very nasally.
Michael Johns - probably the best male so far, but that isn’t saying much about the males this year. Nice voice, good looks - possible top 24.
Samantha Musa - Voted most likely to be this years Antonella. Sorry I call them as I see them. Pretty Girl, Good voice, but I just have the feeling she has a past.
David Archuleta - Nice kid, clean cut, good voice, but something is missing. Might just be his age. Might make top 24 in a weak male field so far.
Carli Smithson - Good story, not bad looking, Great voice, but way oversang the song. Might make the top 24. I’ll put her as a dark horse. As for her husband shiver BLECH.

Have to agree with you about Samantha, Mike…when your whole schtick is how much you love Simon….something is a little off!
I think Carli over-singing was a matter of nerves…she put way too much pressure on herself.
kf, agree about Tatiana….I think the judges were just happy to start off with someone who could carry a tune!

Carli needs to relax and not worry about the vocal acrobats, and as far as the Kelli video, we summerize it like this: If Dolly and Reba had a baby with all the potential, but was not living up to her talent…then tah dah…Dolly and Reba are more emotion than singers, but their songs touch folks, Kelly needs to take Kelly’s lesson from Crossroads with Reba. Opinions?
By Mike S
January 22, 2008 9:33 PM | Link to this
I do agree that Michael the Aussie is the best Male singer so far this year.
I think Carli is at best #4 or 5 among the Females — I would put Kristi Lee Cook, Kady Malloy, Angela Martin and Alaina Whitiker ahead of her so far…I would put Carli in a group with Pia and JEssica from last week.
The only other males I have seen with potential so far are Joey Catalano, Jonathan Baines, Chris Watson … Maybe David from tonight along with Drew Poppletree and Brandon green in the next group.
By Deirdre
January 22, 2008 9:43 PM | Link to this
Mike…how many notes do you take? I never remember names until the semi-finals! But your lists(from what I can remember) are good!
On Kellie being the offspring of Reba and Dolly…that sounds right to me but we’ll have to run it by Mitch…he’s our resident Country expert.

I’m gonna sign off for the night. have to get the dogs emptied before I put them to bed.
Before I go…Heath Ledger’s death has left me kinda stunned. I’ve admired his abilities since the first time I saw him in that teen flick based on Taming of the Shrew. His performance in Brokeback Mountain was amazing and I’ve been looking forward to seeing his version of the Joker in the new Batman flick.
Such a waste…so young, with a growing career, loads of respect from his peers and a beautiful daughter. Sad.

morning mushbloggians one and all!
Interesting catch, D, about the marital status thingy! And of course you’re right, as usual! And no, I don’t frankly remember who else might have been married! I guess it’s sort of a subtle thing… if they’re married they are “unavailable” — not just in a personal way, but also for the stress and involvement of touring etc… perhaps that might be one of those tenuous factors no one actively thinks about, but affects their judgment? However, Barrino had a child to care for… i’d think the single mom thing would be just as hard to overcome in that particular mindset of “availability” … hmmmm …. they sociologist/psychologist part of my brain is trying to take over …
pushing down hard on that part of the brain enough!

I think fewer married folk audition. You’d have to leave your family for an extended period of time and there’s the responsibility of rent/mortgage…which might explain a little why 2 of the married guys were military.
However, despite coming in 4th on Idol, it hasn’t hurt Chris Daughtry at all!

One thing that does not sit well with me about the early auditions besides the obvious Tone death, clueless, odd balls, crazies, loonies(my badd, thats the same as crazies I think),is when a few(count on a few fingers) manage to get the yellow slip to Hollywood most dont last the first week. We always here “you really have a good voice, etc etc”) but they dont last and are forgotton after about 2weeks(or less) Take the guy with the little son, good voice(although I feel I can sing just as good if not better however I am too old :-(. Its kind of sad they have a age cut off because there are many many good old singers that will out sing many of these youngers(and like myself(52) are in their early 50s(watch the doo-wop and some 70s performers who would blow alot of these wanna bes out of the water or atleast show them how its done!) Sorry, but I wasent really impressed. The ones that got through I am afraid wont last. There were several folks that got through last season who did have a little sumptin, disapeared without a trace. By the time they had got down to 30,it was folks I had not even seen although I hadnt missed a show? Ok, the bad ones. Yall knew who they were last night. But Oh-my-god, the female who Simon commented look like she had been dressed by 3 different people(OMG)and her little 10lb fluff cake were just horriable and a loony toon. Now we come to what I call a 2000s updated Tiny Tim(a sixties hippie who had a horriable song call “Tip toe through the Tulips comeplete with flowers in his long wavy hair)dude last night had longer hair then Tiny Tim but could have passed for his lil sister I mean brother :-/ and what on earth was the Fan all about. Lord help the poor fellow and his clueless relatives who really felt he had talent. Mark my words, the folks that got through this week I will wedger only about 1 maybe 2 you will see in the final 50. Many cant hang with the songs and groups selections that is coming. Some party to hard and dont rehearse ending up forgetting the words. So far its happened every season and this is after they get to Hollywood. So at this point getting to Hollywood is only the first step. Now can you Hang after you get there. You have to be 100% each night you perform because its about the public not the judges after you get to Hollywood. One wrong song no matter how great or pretty or strong your voice is will get you booted after the first week of performances. Thats the catch 22 about AI :-)

msteven(can I call you that, it’s easier than blackshepherd)? “10 lb fluff” and “tiptoe thru the tulips dude” LOL…It may be hard to get through your posts but it’s always pleasurable!
I agree…getting to Hollywood is just the first step….Hollywood is tough and, unfortunately, we don’t see most of what happens. My guess is because it gets pretty rough on the singers and they don’t want to show how hard it is.

actually i think they worked out that a long time ago, with him being a struggling musician…they do a LOT of travelling to small venues, and don’t make a lot of money…. AI certainly gave Daughtry the leg-up he needed!!!

You’re probably right, linny. Maybe she was a marriage therapist all along.

Diedre, I had to stop using that name thats why I stopped. I was being stalked by someone on other boards wanting to pick a fight with me. It got really wierd and nasty so thats why I retired that name. Just call me black shep you will get used to it. I have.:-)The person no matter what board I was on would attack me even if I never even said a word to them. Some folks dont have a clue nor a life, I believe you know the type. Also, I kind of got tired of the bozos daily coming at me. I understand how differcult it is to get through my posts lol. I always scored high on the content of my essays but did get in trouble occassionally for the format(all bunched up lol as you know rarely am I lost for words and can be quite chatty(talkative:-) my badd.

Blackshep it is!!! Stay away from those crazy people….they’ll just ruin your day! Like linny said, we love you here so, unless we get a few loonies(which we always do) things should be pretty peaceful most of the time.

PS: BlackShep… a question i’ve always wanted to ask you… do you talk like you write? I get the feeling it’s a stream-of-conscience sort of thing for you… your writing flows right from one thought to another (it’s the way I usually am, so i understand it quite well!) … i’ve found either one of two things usually with people who write like we do… either they also talk the same way, or they rarely talk at all! which are you??? (i’m a talker)
lol!

Thanks Diedre! I hold you guys/gals in HIGH regard and respect. Infact you and a couple of others are the Only ones that can defuse me quickly with just a few soft words when someone has p** me off . Like my shepherds I can appear to have a lot of Bark, bite and Aggression, but deep down inside I am very compassionate and a softy at heart and really like people, ALL People, white, black, yellow, red, fat skinny old and young and can conversate with Any age group or ethnic group. We may look different, but we are All the same! Equal and our blood is red. A white persons blood will keep me alive just as a black persons blood/organs will. (Please dont tell anyone! this is our little secret)As for music, entertainment I am color blind because I listen to it all. Except maybe foriegn language and dont care for heavy metal, or Rap music(give me r&b ir rock n roll over rap anyday)Some rap is ok, except when it starts cursing and belittling women then I will cut it off faster then you can say “Paula Abdul” lol. =^=^ is that what its called? Flowing thoughts? I am glad you understand my lil affliction. I just usually have some many thoughts and things to say I try to get out as much as possible. Remember before we had the computor and actually wrote letters? If you ever received a letter from me, make sure all your chores are done, you have your coffee, tee and donuts, be ready to sit back and real a short novel.lol..I promise you will be thouroghly entertained and kept company atleast for a little while :-)

Sorry forgot to answer your question, yup I talk the same way I write..a LOT. too much some time :-( quiet I am not unless I am not feeling well or going through something heavy. 90% the time I am a cheery happy up beat person who will talk to just about anyone except folks who dont talk. I am kind of leery and suspicious of a “too quiet” person. Because if your not talking at all, you surely are thinking about something.

=^=^ Linny? thats very funny about your hubby lol. but your right some people will only talk when its a topic they are an expert about or have a lot of knowledge. But atleast he Talks. Some folks Never say anything, stare into space or just stare at you with a half smile blank stare(creepy to say the least!) You have some folk(like some of my relatives) who call you and have no conversation meaning you have to do all the talking. If you call ME you better lead the conversation because if I aint in the mood for talking(however rare that is) I will terminate the call if I find I am the only one talking and you called me.
