1/17: On Idol ratings, Daughtry, Clay

The final ratings for night one was 33.4 million, up slightly from the preliminary numbers and down 10.7% from a year earlier when 37.4 million caught the show. The prelim numbers for Wednesday night were 30.3 million, down about 18 percent from a year ago’s 36.9 million. The dropoff among 18-49 has been about the same.

Maybe we can blame it on Kayla Dawn Hatfield (below). Just kidding. I just can’t believe she made it to Hollywood!

kayla%20dawn%20hatfield.jpg

Daughtry backpedaled a bit on his comments about “Idol” in which he said the show was in a state of decline. (She yesterday’s blog post). Here’s what he wrote on his blog, courtesy of mtv.com:

“It’s so sad that when you’re asked something and you answer honestly … you’re made out to be the bad guy,” he wrote less than half a day after the RS interview posted. “Yes, I’m referring to the Rolling Stone post. The funny thing is, if you heard the whole conversation you would’ve heard all the good things I said about the show as well. Like for instance: How it’s an amazing platform to launch a career … ‘If you take it seriously!!!!’ Let’s not forget I was a struggling artist for 11 years that never got any respect or notoriety so know that I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity that ‘Idol’ gave me. And that’s where my comments came from.”

“My long-winded point is this,” he concluded. “I was never trying to ‘DISS’ the show or ‘BITE THE HAND THAT FED ME’ so to speak. I was simply giving my input on what I think would spice the show up a bit. Sorry for being honest.”

Ken Warwick with mtv.com defended the many contestants who appear to have had professional pasts such as Kristy Lee Cook, who used to be with Nashville Arista and Britney Spears’ management company.

“The truth of the matter is, there are too many people who come on to audition for us to go into all their backgrounds,” Warwick said. “We judge it purely on, when they walk through the door, if they have a record company attached to them already, then we’re not interested. If they have a management contract, they’ve got to lose it. it. … We take them on the merits of ‘Can they sing or not?’

“There are kids who are sufficiently good out there, that maybe should be stars,” he continued, “and the fact that they’ve been a backing singer to someone else in the past — if they were within the age limit and they meet all the criteria that we set — then who are we to say, ‘No, you can’t have another go [at it]’? That’s ridiculous.”

I would agree with Ken. If some of these folks have some professional experience, so be it. Not everyone can be Kellie Pickler or Elliott Yamin, truly diamonds in the rough who never would have gotten anywhere without “Idol.” And folks like Daughtry, Taylor Hicks and Melinda Doolittle have had plenty of professional experience.

Do you want to see what Clay looks like in “Spamalot,” which debuts January 18? NY Post’s Page Six provides a photo here.

Oddly, I was flipping through the channels last night and caught Jordin singing “Tattoo” on Kimmel (with frizzed out hair), then switched to Craig Ferguson on CBS and there was Blake doing “Break Anotha” (wearing one of his hideous plaid sweaters.) Both are doing all the shows they were supposed to do but couldn’t back in November/December when the writers strike kept the late-night shows off the air.

And don’t forget to email me if you want the Blake CD/autographed poster by 6 p.m. Friday and explain why you deserve it!

Rodney, do you think the 2007 Idols were short-changed because they are now out trying to get the word out about their new music when the new season is starting and people are no longer thinking about last year’s show and just want to look forward to this year’s finale?

I can’t help but think that because of the writers’ strike a lot of people besides the writers and the studios are losing out.

JT, sounds more like clarifying what a newspaper/magazine editor/writer decided to sensationalize rather than backpedaling…if he was quoted out of context and felt that it needed to be set straight, then good for HIM, standing up for his own words, not the words chosen out of all he said…

awwwww ain’t clay just soooo…. coff coff …. nevermind i just can’t get it out….never was much of a fan! but he’s doing well for himself, so hey, go for it! wish I had a talent that would get me the $$ he’s able to make! LOL

Amy, I’m not Rodney but my opinion is that last year’s Idols were shortchanged from the very beginning of last year’s season. They were never highly profiled as in previous years, the mentors and the charity thing were more important, took up more time, and cut into any time the public could get in “getting to know” the contestants themselves. They were frequently just shown in group situations (like with the mentors) and any solo time was minimal.

So adding any roadblocks such as a writer’s strike (i still don’t get it that a supposed stand-up comedian needs writers to do his show.. sure lowers my respect for the comedian!!! just give me the freaking WRITER, forget the middle man!!!) to what they’d already suffered with AI’s executive decision-making from 2007, yeah, they were shortchanged a LOT compared to other seasons!

I would not care if there were no “mentors” this year. It is so fake when some of these washed up singers show up an the contestants, that weren’t even born the last time they had a hit, have to act all excited.

Theme nights are OK but don’t limit the contestants to one person. It really isn’t fair for men to sing classics by women and for women to sing the men’s songs.

By kellyfan

January 17, 2008 3:03 PM | Link to this

It may not be fair, but I think it also shows the range of the contestants…I definitely enjoyed the theme nights in the past, e.g., one of Kelly’s defining performances was during Big Band Night. (“Stuff Like That There”)

Mentors, meh…it was silly and more like a “here I am to promote something”

By AmyG

January 17, 2008 3:08 PM | Link to this

I agree about the mentors. I would rather watch the contestants get vocal lessons from a vocal teacher than listen to them being mentored by celebrities.

I just feel like the whole 2007 season was a washout (I don’t want to say it was a waste, because it wasn’t a waste), and I hope this year is exciting like several of the other years have been.

WE, KF, exactly! “Here I am Look at ME(ntor)” I like theme nights…. i especially liked it the year they did “Decades” … a 60’s week, a 70’s week…. they could go back to the TWENTIES…. let them do a little bit of jazzy/bluesy stuff! 50’s….oh hailYEAH!…

let’s see… 50’s, 60’s 70’s 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, Rock (and Rock’n’Roll) (including country rock, bebop, etc), Blues and/or Jazz, Contemporary (wide-open to styles!), Ballads/Love Songs — that’s 10 nights, how many do we need in all???

What i meant about there being 4 more audition shows is that there are 4 more ones where we’re yet to discover people we haven’t seen yet.. i wasn’t even talking about Hollywood because in order to get there they must be somewhat good, and we have already seen them

By ,,,=^..^=,,,

and whatever they do, gag Simon’s mouth when he tells someone that the song is “too old for them to be singing” …. 80-90% of the stuff they sing (or are ALLOWED to sing) is at LEAST 20 years old, and the freaking age limit isn’t much higher than THAT…. of COURSE the stuff is OLD!!! (blame copyright stuff for that in part, or owners refusing to allow these kids to use certain music)

By ,,,=^..^=,,,

January 17, 2008 3:19 PM | Link to this

oh, yeah, and as a little “turn about is fair play” do a Broadway/Showtune night where EVERYONE gets to sound like a broadway star instead of whatever the other types they are…. just to see if they ARE really versatile!!!

By kellyfan

January 17, 2008 3:21 PM | Link to this

Linny, agreed. To be honest, I prefer when they sing older stuff rather than the newer, still on the charts songs… I mean, really, hearing Blake sing Maroon 5 makes me miss Adam Levine and it’s a bit distracting.

Hi D! (Good morning y’all!)

Happy friday!

I found Kristy Lee Cook’s my space last night. She mentions the failed record deal in her bio. She was signed to Arista Nashville, got the intro by someone involved with LeAnn Rimes and was to work with Britney. She was subsequently dropped from the label. Sounds like she caught a tough break…

Here’s some Kelly for y’all. It’s a performance of Chivas (the fun is in her telling the story about writing it): http://www.glitteratigossip.com/glitterati/2007/11/kelly-clarkson.html#more

But while I have time before my duties at home…a couple of comments.

It’s fun to have the blog active again and think how much more fun it would have been if we were still on a social networking blog(or if this one moved a little faster) I hope the ajc will find us a new place soon so we can have un-delayed conversations!

The show has started off better for me…yeah it’s still the same stuff but there are subtle differences…a couple more good singers each night, Simon being kinder and somewhat gentler, Paule trying to be ‘honest’ with the contestants. I’ve liked the good singers I heard and see some potential. Let’s hope it continues.

I’m glad to see some old-timers back on a fairly regular schedule…Mike msteven(blackshepherd),negativo, IdolLVR, Justin, and a few others.

I’m even developing some tiny bit of affection for our would-be tormentors. OpenWaterSucks aka doodie and gilldude don’t really seem too bad these days and have even contributed to the conversation(well, maybe not gilldude)

Good start!!!!!!!

New York Post:

It’s really a shame that celebrities can’t get married the old fashioned way with a normal photographer. Everyone needs to have OK! Or Us Weekly there too, as if that’s the norm.

If you’re a huge star, I understand inviting them in to prevent them from trying to take pics from the Church rafters and causing a commotion. But when it comes to D-Listers, it looks pathetic.

Ex- Idol Katharine McPhee is getting married in February and wants to ensure one of our many favorite rags will pick up her shots. How much is Katharine asking for? Only $50,000. People, In Touch and Ok! have all politely declined. So it looks like a tabloid won’t pay for the wedding after all.

Morning kf, WE, etc. Kat McPhee… there are soooo many young ladies out there who are just lovely, have nice voices, some talent, but just aren’t enough to cross the line into full-blooded celebrity status. UNfortunately, some of the ones who DO manage to cross into it end up being real losers. Oh, yeah, they have money, and fame, and notoriety, but… they seem so miserable; never finding any happiness, just drugs, booze, and controversy. Maybe Kat’s better off NOT being put in the spotlight… not that she’d agree, I’m sure!

ok…. here’s a question…. open to anyone’s responses…

if you were going to pick, physically and ‘attitudinally’, what you think someone who represents as an “American Idol”, what would be the attributes you would look for… i’m not talking “perfect ideals” … i’m talking a young person trying to become a pop icon; for purposes of this discussion, we’ll assume the person HAS shown him/herself to have above-average talent and versatility and “show(wo)manship”… we’re going to be crass and talk about looks, physique, and attitude

wondering what can of worms this will open up

By kellyfan

January 18, 2008 10:18 AM | Link to this

LOL,Linny! WE…I guess so. So that means you have excellent taste in women. ;)

Wow, Linny, good question. Hm, confidence, charm, approchability, looks (they totally play a part), that “it” factor, connecting with an audience, believing in what they sing. Does that answer it? Or are you looking for names? I’ll give you an example: Trenyce. She had, by most accounts, a very good voice, but she just didn’t connect with the audience. To me, it felt like she was “singing by numbers.” I hate when contestants do that. It’s not a gymnastics routine! Make me believe it! Make me like you and want to vote for you!

By ,,,=^..^=,,,

January 18, 2008 10:26 AM | Link to this

oh kf, great answer!!! and yes, that’s the kind of answer i was looking for. or you could go off on a description of the physical nature of what an idol should be in your opinion.

“X”, for “exile”, perhaps? you’re wrong, you know you’re wrong, and you’re just trying to start some trouble. I don’t own the blog, don’t want to. I don’t know what i ever did to YOU to make you hate me so much, but you’re pretty mean-spirited and petty. If you don’t like me, IGNORE me… or go somewhere else. it’s a big world. why waste time on being ugly and mean? Anyone deserves a response, so, i’ve said it once, now i won’t pay any attention to you in the future.

You know someone mentioned Hitler the other day and I was just thinking shouldn’t we really forgive him? I mean, he hasn’t killed anyone in years. I mean, sure he killed 6 million people, but once he ran out of people, he wsn’t such a bad guy was he? I really believe in forgiving people no matter how they treat others. Hitler didn’t kill ME, so why should I worry about what he did to all those other people? I think in the spirit of forgiveness we should forget what he did and all just learn to get along. I can get along with anybody as long as they aren’t actually klling ME! LOL! Now I MUST get to work! SO much WORK to do today. I may not be back on for 4 or 5 minutes because I just have ALL this WORK to do here at work. I may not even be able to pop in for another 6 minutes. Diedre, as always I enjoy your comments as you seem fair and very open minded(unlike many others) However I do have a question for you. What suggestions would you give AL to improve its intake?. Clearly, too much air time is givin to bimbos. I mean REALLY now, comon. I told you all that we would not have seen the last of His Highness in the cape. Simons no.1 fan. I thought the show had a cut off?He is 45, and they had a few folks way past the cut off. Why are they wasting air time on this clowns? I call them clowns because they be goofing instead of Really singing. Also, I was very disappointed with last years top 30 and last 10. None I mean NONE really showed any real promise of longevity. Many of the folks who were in the early auditions sounded and LOOKED better then the top 12! Their were several guys who were much better then that male back up singer who ruined You cant hurry Love(forgetting the dog gone words? no wonder he was just a back up singer) and Melinda doolittle was far better then Jordan Sparks. Like you stated, probably the best thing about AI now is the blog of us old timers lol. I look forward just interacting and reading different opinions minus the racial slurs that I have never notice in your blog nor have you ever read in mine. Someday folks are gonna realize we are all the same: Human. be it black, white, yellow, or redskin. We all bleed red, we ALL sin, we have faults. Anyway keep the good tone going! The rest of us old timers will be right here to back you up! Now that I got that out of the way.:-) Can we get some REAL good singers minus the screamers and rock n roll shouters? Or is that a bit too much to ask for?

ahhhhhh WE that’s not fair! what if he’s a TRUE aberration and is actually a heterosexual male who has practiced abstinence for all 19 years… maybe there really IS someone like that out there? i mean, i hear that miracles really DO happen!

Linny, I applaud the dude for remaining a virgin. I have the up most respect for anyone that can do that……..however he reminds me of a serial killer. Something aint right.

LOL! the one who reminds me of a serial killer was the stalker dude. Just to LOOK at him, it seemed clear to me there was something VERY VERY wrong with his mental state … the way he stood, the way he leaned toward Paula, the way his eyes shifted, the way his freaking HAIR was combed, LOL… well maybe NOT LOL… he was just plain, unadulterated, pure CREEPY. Then add the words to his so-called song to Paula…. I swear, I would have had the police ON CAMERA hauling him away … sell the tape to COPS COPS COPS or something… shudder (and i know you were just kidding around with what you said…and i admit it IS a little creepy… i mean, i’ve raised 4 sons, and of COURSE they are absolutely perfect … but abstinence???? HA!! even i know better than that!!)

oops pure typo there…THREE (3) not 4 sons…maybe i was subconsciously including my husband…?

LOL, Linny!

You know, that story started out sweet, but went to creepy and sad in 2 seconds! He said he’d never kissed a girl and wouldn’t until his wedding…and I’m thinking, “Ok, no. What kind of woman would marry a guy without even kissing him beforehand?!” You know, not counting the cultures of arranged marriages, and such…or lesbians! ;)

kf, my thoughts were almost identical… for about maybe 5 seconds i was “ok….a Promise-Keepers kind of thing for kids…. our church had the little cards all the teens signed (and i knew darned well they were lying!) etc… but then, i thought [what you put in quotes] exactly! I mean… the girl would either have to be EQUALLY abstaining and thus inexperienced (and they might never get to the point of having the ability to have kids, lol) or she’d be teaching this guy to serve her exACTly like SHE wanted (hmmmmmm wait…. that has some merit!…)

Give the guy a break, I was 16 before I had a girl, so am i a freak? I did kiss before that though.

January 18, 2008 2:41 PM | Link to this

I’m talking about the kissing Shaun. I was kissing in the first grade. I think it was seventh grade before I was tongue kissing, and by 16 I was laying down the wood.

January 18, 2008 2:44 PM | Link to this

LOL Shaun, good for you! and i won’t touch the answer to “am i a freak” because i don’t think so but no matter what i say…. someone will take it wrong grin

No, the poking fun is not because he is a virgin, so much as it is the whole never even kissed thing. That IS kinda weird, to me, because even in grammar (grade school?) (elementary school?) kids trade “kisses” … not serious, of course, and maybe he means “real” kissing (as in um…. well you know what i mean … this IS a family-friendly blog!!!).. i’m not THAT much of a prude i don’t think, like i said, even my coff coff perfect sons surely did not abstain!!!

not that anyone ever exactly SAID anything but…

I’m just not that trusting when it comes to this sort of thing, especially when it is backed by a cheesy key and heart necklace. That is what bothered me, do what you want with your life kid, but a key to the heart that your dad is wearing… dude!

lol @linny. Bad day??? {{{Linny}}}} Dont let it get to you, we have all been there, including you. I am so ready for the weekend. No plans, just laying around. I might check out the fight Saturday.

JTesla, I feel ya. I am for the most part close to my father and aint no chance that we are wearing a heart and lock necklaces.

bad day, Shaun? … um… no, not particularly… i’m just glad that i can keep the blog up in the background and peek in during the lull between one project and the other, while the printer takes it’s sweet slow time processing… or when i’m just bored, for that matter!

but bad? nah.

and hey, JT/WE …. i adore and love and cherish my dad, i’m a female, and I wouldn’t share a heart/key necklace set with him, LOL!!!

Linny, exactly! I wasn’t creeped out by the no sex, no kissing a girl…the whole key/heart necklace was just TOO much!

I understand being religuous and such, and abstinence very well, but seriously.(I was raised Catholic, but ANYWAY!)

Good Afternoon mushblog!

I agree with you Linny. I love my dad a lot, but I wouldn’t share that with him. I would keep the heart in a box and give it to whomever I marry. It just seems a little bit weird that it’s his dad that keeps the heart.

Hi gang, I’m back and p*ssed off!

linny is NOT the boss of this blog…I am! NO wait…I’ve got that wrong…I’m not the boss…I’m the Queen! That’s right, I forgot. And Mike is the King! And Mitch is the Prime Minister. War Eagle, Amy, kellyfan are in the cabinet. JTesla is our foreign ambassador. linny is the Chief Justice! We also have a court Jester(I think we all know who that is) :-)

shay, IMO, the 11:29 am post suggests to me that an exile is involved because it contains a pretty common argument and one of the reasons why there’s been so much animosity toward linny on the exile blog. You may or may not know that someone, in the spirit of ‘friendship’, emailed to linny a copy of some of the exiles’ more colorful conversations . I don’t know who did this…I don’t really care, but the cruel, meanspirited, downright nasty stuff directed to and about linny from some of her one time friends both shocked and disgusted me. Nobody deserves that kind of treatment..no matter how much you disagree with their way of doing things.

The honest truth is that you don’t know FOR SURE whether an exile was involved or not…neither do I. But I think you can probably agree that, after having read the opinion of her held by her former blog friends…she has every right to suspect one of them of the harassment that took place today.

If someone had said that stuff about you, wouldn’t you look to people who had already maligned you?

You sure didn’t feel that way when flats was harrassing everyone, did you? LOL! What made you change your mind?

By Deirdre

January 18, 2008 5:52 PM | Link to this

I DID feel that way when flats was harassing everybody and if you paid any attention, I called him on it! The problem here is that now…whoever you are,… thinks payback is the best revenge…instead of moving on a letting it go! You’ve decided that sinking to his level is somehow justified because you went through it so everyone else should too.

Does what flats did to you give you the ok to do it to somebody else? Doesn’t that make you the same as him? And you know what…you won’t be banned from the blog either!!!!!!!!

How is what you’re doing going to change anything? Or does it just make you feel good……it was pretty obvious it made flats feel good, too! IMO, that makes you just like him!

AND…I’m not afraid of my name appearing with my opinions!

Not sure about X, but I know what A stands for, and it isn’t “adorable”.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi to everyone. They have the filters back up at the base, so I will be relegated to evening posts again.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. WOOT - we are supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow tonight.

Of course flats didn’t harrass everybody. Just certain people. I guess that’s the difference.

January 18, 2008 6:46 PM | Link to this

Hey mike! sorry the filters are back up, because you’ll certainly be missed during the daytime discussions!!!

D, all I can say is thanks, tho’ I know what you said wasn’t just on my behalf, it’s on the entire blog’s behalf. I really did try hard to follow my own advice and just iggit today, lol!

they are telling us possibly 3-4 inches here as well, and that would be fun; however, if things go as usual in athens, we won’t see but a smattering of flakes; it’s really sort of strange!

and just to set the record straight — again — a LOT of us called flats/greg on his behavior. SOME of what he said and did WAS intolerable. however some people deliberately egged HIM on too, seeing what buttons to push … that’s just as wrong, in my opinion. we all feel differently about a LOT of things, we’ll never agree on all of them. that’s why we came up with the IGGIT concept, and for a while it worked fine.

in any event, it’s truly the past; he’s tried very hard NOT to make the same mistakes. we do not bring up folks who decided to leave UNLESS SOMEONE ASKS… and then we’ve had a firm policy of just saying that some decided to blog elsewhere. no grudges held. And anyone and everyone are welcome back, under the same guidelines we’ve always had: Respect and courtesy. and Tolerance.

so, as the beatles once said “Let It Be”

peace :)

The difference???? There is NO difference. You are doing the same thing to linny that flats did to you!

Let’s refresh your conveniently forgetful mind! I asked everyone to ignore flats in hopes that he would get bored and leave. I sympathized, via email, with the people who were being harassed by flats. I finally said that, since I wasn’t the one suffering through the harassment and since it was clear that he wasn’t going to get bored and leave, that the people who were being harassed should be the ones to decide how to handle the situation. They did! We, meaning almost all of us, including myself, used nearly a full day to tell flats what we thought of his tactics. Within a day or two after that, the Exile blog was formed.

linny and I chose to stay here, and despite all protestations to the contrary, that decision seems to have bugged the hell out of you! I made the decision to stay here based on the fact that I’ve been here for 4 years…I like it, despite the regular intrusion of people who want to make our lives miserable. I ignore them…they’re not worth the time I give them.

But ignoring somebody who is persistant has failed…so now, I state my peace with them and try to move on.

If you want to continue to be a bug up our collective azzes…then be my guest! Just makes you look like the new bully on the block!
