1/14: On Kimberley Locke, Clay, Fantasia

I’m working on the annual “Idol returns” story for the print edition Tuesday. Anybody here who would like to be quoted and offer your sage observations of the past season and how things are going to go this year can email me at rho@ajc.com. I’ll need to use your real name, city of residence and age.

We already have a photo gallery featuring quick updates on 14 “Idol” contestants which you may seen on ajc.com.

Other publications have done theirs already, including the Los Angeles Times and USA Today.

Nigel Lythgoe told the LA Times that 30% of the Hollywood finalists used instruments when given the chance but he thought of those, only 10% did particularly well.

In other “Idol” news:

Clay Aiken, promoting his upcomign role on Broadway’s “Spamalot,” got buggy at Newsweek.com when questions veered to his private life. Shocking!.

How did you get into a fight with that lady on a plane?

I’m not going to talk about it.

I was just curious because you’ve never talked about it.

I did talk about it. [Yes, he did. Poor Newsweek gal didn’t do her research! And it’s true. This is really old stuff to ask him about.] Here’s the story.

What about the Kelly Ripa thing?

I’m not going to discuss it.

Did you think it was homophobic?

I’m not going to discuss it. [Wow. There’s an oldie from November, 2006!]

What do you want to talk about?

I think we’re done.

Can we talk about something fun?

No, we’re done. I thought NEWSWEEK would be more reputable. I’m surprised.

But I think people are curious about it.

It was a year ago. This is NEWSWEEK. It’s not the National Enquirer. I’d hate to have a job where I had to be rude to people.

Well, there are far harsher things she could have asked him about but now if I ever interview him, I know I’d have to tread lightly on certain topics or get the same treatment, I’m sure! Do you think he reacted okay?

We’re just having a conversation. Change the subject! I’d never take a job where I had to do something that I didn’t want to do.

Kimberley Locke is dating the “Fit Club” trainer Harvey E. Walden IV, according to People..

For Locke, romance developed after the Fit Club cameras stopped rolling. “We worked out on the show together for four months and never even said anything to each other,” says the “Band of Gold” singer, 30. “I thought he was mean. I didn’t want him to be mean to me, but then after the show was over and I saw him outside of work, he was really nice.”

DJ Slim reports that Sanjaya and his sister Shyamali are shopping a “Donnie & Marie”-type variety show. Odds that this will ever come to screen: the chances of Paula’s new single winning a Grammy. Of course, if Shyamali were required to wear tight shirts, the male population would approve. (see video below)

Dallas Austin does a fundraiser every year to raise money for instruments and music education for local schools and Fantasia is going to be there. It’s at Cobb Energy Centre March 1. But if you’re short of cash, don’t bother: it’s $1,000 per person. But you also get George Clinton, Gladys Knight, Orlando Jones and Cedric the Entertainer. You can buy tickets here at www.dallasaustinfoundation.org
