1/11: Paula Abdul at the Super Bowl?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello, who loves to get a scoop, wrote an exclusive that there are talks for Paula Abdul to perform at the Super Bowl Feb. 3. E! got a confirmation from Abdul’s rep.
I haven’t seen her sing in years so this would be quite a coup if it were to work out. And as noted in the story, she hasn’t released an album in 13 years. Tom Petty is the halftime entertainment. Others set to perform are Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5. It’s not clear if she’d be part of that halftime show or be one of the pre-show entertainers. She did do a song on Randy Jackson’s upcoming CD.
Jordin Sparks will sing the National Anthem. The game happens to be in Glendale, Ariz., her hometown and don’t forget, her dad was a former NFL player. (Her single “Tattoo” is currently No. 6 on the top 40 charts. Her album is at No. 44 on the Billboard Top 200. Bizarrely, the week after Christmas, Elliott Yamin’s xmas “Sounds of the Season” sold enough to jump to No. 32, not far from Daughtry at No. 26.)
And Ken Barnes at USA Today listed the top best-selling “Idol” performers to date here. The top 20 are Kelly Clarkson (9.4 mil), Carrie Underwood (7.9 mil), Clay Aiken (4.8 mil ), Daughtry (3.6 mil), Ruben Studdard (2.5 mil), Fantasia (2.3 mil), Bo Bice (706,000), Kellie Pickler (702,000), Taylor Hicks (699K) and Josh Gracin (695K), Elliott Yamin (563K), Jordin (473K), Kat (366K), Bucky (317K), Blake (286K), Kimberley Locke (231K), Diana DeGarmo (166K), Justin (143K), Tamyra (123K) and Mandisa (69K). That’s more than 35 million albums sold right there.
Top downloaded artists: 1-Kelly Clarkson (8.9 mil) 2-Carrie (5.8 mil) 3-Daughtry (4 mil) 4-Jordin (1.5 mil) 5- Elliott (1.1 mil) 6- Kat (993K) 7- Kellie (720K) 8-Fantasia (638K) 9-Blake (580K) 10- Josh (553K) 11- Bo (457K) 12-Clay (446K) 13-Taylor (330K) 14- Bucky (252K) 15- Ruben (230K) 16- Kimberley Locke (132K) 17- Diana DeGarmo (87K) 18- Mandisa (52K) 19- Melinda (38K) 20- Paris (30K)
Speaking of Diana, I spoke with her for 35 minutes yesterday, by far the longest stretch I’ve ever done so. I’ll post some of her thoughts next week and more for sure on January 25 when “Gone Country” debuts. And yes, she is serious about going country. This was not a lark for her at all as it may have been for, say, Bobby Brown or Dee Snider.

Good Morning everyone! I think it’s amazing the differences when you compare sells to downloads, especially with the more recent AI contestants. It just proves to me that the record companies really need to understand that downloading is not something that will go away and they should embrace it instead of fight it. Not being able to download doesn’t make me go out and buy a CD, I just go without.

Morning MushPit dwellers!!! Amy that’s exactly my position… technology being what it is, surely they can figure a way to do it, to give the companies an income, to get the artists and songwriters etc their fair share…
one of the problems i think they have is that on an album (CD) there is always some “filler” material; stuff that probably WON’T make it on any chart ever, but is considered good enough to put on the recording. Selling song-by-song (downloads) will cut back on the ability to use filler; not sure who that will hurt the most, probably the artist…think about how many “b-side” songs in the past became hits, LOL
ah well…
got lots to do, see you guys later here in the MushPit!

Paula Abdul????? Is going to perform at the Super Bowl????? That HAS to be a joke! But if it isn’t….this is going to be fun.
It’s interesting that Daughtry is in 4th place on sales…wasn’t that where he ended up on Idol. I have a feeling he’ll be sailing past Clay with his next work.

Unless Paula plans on having a wardrobe malfunction like her former friend, Ms. Jackson, I will not be watching her performance!!

In an effort to restore the light-hearted feel of Fridays on the AIBuzz, here’s a lil joke for you…
The New Irish Coffee…
An Irish woman of advanced age visited her physician to ask his advise in reviving her husband’s libido.
“What about trying Viagra?” asked the doctor.
“Not a chance,” she said. “He won’t even take an aspirin.”
“Not a problem,” replied the doctor. “Give him an ‘Irish Viagra.’ It’s when you drop the Viagra tablet into his coffee. He won’t even taste it. Give it a try and call me in a week to let me know how things went.”
It wasn’t a week later when she called the doctor, who directly inquired as to her progress. The poor dear exclaimed, “Oh, faith, bejaysus and begorrah! ‘Twas horrid! Just terrible, doctor!”
“Really? What happened?” asked the doctor.
“Well, I did as you advised and slipped it in his coffee and the effect was almost immediate. He jumped straight up, with a twinkle in his eye and with his pants a-bulging fiercely! With one swoop of his arm, he sent me cups and tablecloth flying, ripped me clothes to tatters and took me t hen and there passionately on the tabletop! It was a nightmare, I tell you, an absolute nightmare!”
“Why so terrible?” asked the doctor, “Do you mean the sex your husband provided wasn’t good?”
“‘Twas the best sex I’ve had in 25 years! But sure as I’m sittin here, I’ll never be able to show me face in Starbucks again!”

Idolwilsuk, I will watch for the simple fact that I hope she does something stupid. I can’t for the life of me imagine why anyone would want her to perform. Her time was up in the early 90’s.
And I also would not object to a wardrobe malfunction. She is still kind of hot when she isn’t acting kooky.

One, yeah you got THAT right!… the Super Bowl talent committee has been totally PC for years… someone Old, someone New, someone Horrible and someone Blue
[for you youngsters, “blue” used to be how soft porn was referred to in polite company]

Hey Rodney, I’m not trying to be the “Spelling Police”, but you spelled Paula’s last name Adbul (I had to look at it 5 or 6 times to make sure, because something just looked “off”).
If she does perform on the Superbowl, I really hope she does a good job and that we don’t have another incident like the one with Britney.
Linny, I LOVED your joke and laughed out loud when I read it (a couple people walking by my office were surprised).

American Idol judge Randy Jackson is releasing an album in January 2008. Randy Jackson’s Music Club: Vol. 1, on which Randy arranges and play instruments, will feature Richie Sambora, Mariah Carey, Joss Stone, and a duet with Idol co-judge Paula Abdul. Randy announced to Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday morning.
I wonder if Paula will be performing her new deut with Randy J?
I HOPE NOT

Paula, I ask one favor — Please please please no WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS!!! heheheh
One big difference between downloads and album sales — downloads are mainly SINGLE SONGS and not entire albums. Also, a total downloads will not seperate those - so a person with a million downloads may have 900K of one or two songs, and only 100K of thier total album.
However, I agree with just about everyone - digital downloads is where it is going and I also think that the traditional “album” will soon be thing of the past.
In a way the technology future wuill take us back to the 1950’s and 1960’s musicwise - where the emphasis will be on releasing SINGLES (remember 45’s) and not albums.
I also think that it may eventually lead to the overall quality of music starting to go back up as artists concentrate on finding great songs instead of 10-15 mediocre ones.

I don’t see Jr. Nation ever “accepting” Gordon, but I think the whole Hendrick thing will be viewed as a blessing. Jr’s fans are so starved to see him on a good team with a good owner and quality equipment, that they would even accept Jr DRIVING the 24.

I was having trouble too Amy.
I know several Jr. fans that are still not happy about the move.
I have been a long time Mark Martin fan and I haven’t really decided who I am going to pull for since he is only running part time.

Nascar is redundant and awful. It is not a sport and Jeff Gordon needs to come out of the closet already. Paula during the SuperBowl? God help the football fans. Couldn’t they get somebody else or were all of the talented people busy?

Eagle, Greg…..i’m dying here … hush!!! LOLOLOL…. i have been told I have to be quieter at my desk… it’s hard when you’re bursting out with laughter and/or choking on your coffee or coke because of something on the blog!!!
Welcome back D!!! That’s what I did on my last day of ‘vacation’ — we’d driven all night from Tampa, i napped for 2 hours then went with all my gift cards to the Mall (I am NOT a mall-person!) and spent a few hours, then went to the hairdresser, got my hair washed by a gal that massages the scalp soooooo nicely, THEN went to the nail shop for a pedicure where they massage the feet up to the knees!…. Niiiiice way to end all that stress (driving and shopping!)
so. get anything fun? errrr. that is anything fun that you can share about?? (heh heh heh)
