1/4: Now is Taylor Hicks off J Records?

Wow. Ruben managed to release at least three albums with J Records before he was dropped last year. Now season five winner Taylor Hicks may have lost his J Records deal after a single release, if this EW blog site is to be believed..
I just saw this news late Thursday. I’m going to make some calls Friday and update this if I get anything firmer. Taylor sold 699,000 copies of his first release with virtually no airplay, save for a few spins on AC radio. That really isn’t half bad in this day and age. But his ’70s style rock-n-soul sound did not translate to radio, which helped propel Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry and Carrie Underwood to multi-million sales. This move, if true, is not a surprise if you think about it. I mean, what could J Records do to really help Taylor down the road given his predilections? Probably, not much.
But as Taylor has said many times, he’ll just keep on touring and recording and living on a tour bus. That’s his life. That’s what makes him happy whether he’s playing 5,000 people or 500 or even 50.
As of at least a few days ago, he was in the Phillipines performing in Manila. Here’s the story..
