10/3: Idol Underground

This site had been so underground the past couple of years, I’ve only become truly aware of it recently. It’s called American Idol Underground..

Unsigned musicians can get played on online radio stations and get exposure through various competitions in different genres of music. Whether this has led to any real big successes I can’t tell especially given so many other places musicians use now to build exposure such as MySpace and YouTube.

The operation is not directly affiliated with 19 Entertainment or the show but has licensed the Idol name. The site makes money from advertising, sponsorship and upload fees from musicians. “It’s still an early stage concept as a digital media,” said president and CEO Justin Beckett for Fluid Audio, which runs Idol Underground.

For $25, musicians are guaranteed 200 spins in the music category of their choice. There are 13 genres and 50 radio stations. The site has 100,000 musicians in file and 1 million unique visitors a month, Beckett said.

Dana Rice, a 33-year-old Dacula spoken-word artist, recently won $2,500 in her category. “I was glad they came up with the underground version,” she said. “They have the age limit and I’ve been over that since the show came out.”
