9/24: China bans Idol-style shows in primetime

In the United States, “American Idol,” despite occasional accusations of meanness, is considered the epitome of a “family” show that kids, parents and grandparents can watch together.

But in China, where “Idol’ style shows have flourished as well, the government is concerned by the tone of the shows.

Here’s an excerpt from [a Reuters story.]:

Friday’s move by the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) was to further “resist vulgarity” in television programmes, the media watchdog said on its Web site (www.sarft.gov.cn) on Friday.

“Currently, some television talent shows have vulgar problems concerning the design, judges, performance of the contestants, which have damaged the media image and caused strong reactions from viewers,” it said in a statement.*

In the meantime, the “Idol” judges were in Dallas over the weekend for the later auditions. They are set to hit Atlanta the week of October 8 but as of now, are not planning to do any press conferences.
