12/20: Young Jeezy beats Taylor
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlanta’s own Young Jeezy easily outgunned Tayor Hicks, selling 352K in his first week out with “The Inspiration.” Taylor Hicks’ self-title CD debuted at No. 2 and sold 298K, comparable to Carrie Underwood a year ago with 315K. Interestingly, Carrie remains hot in her 57th week with yet another 198K sold and No. 6 ranking on the Billboard charts.
Hicks actually sold less than No. 4 finisher Chris Daughtry a few weeks ago, who opened at 304K. Daughry sold another 181K and is now up to 795K, with a chance of hitting 1 million by the first week of January.
The top 5 debuts among “Idol” finalists are:
Clay 613K
Ruben 417K
Carrie 415K
Daughtry 304K
Taylor 298K
If Hicks can get some radio airplay, his CD might sell more than 2 million and 1 million is guaranteed even without radio.
Fantasia opened at No. 19 with 133K. That’s not bad but far from her debut back in 2004 of 240K. Still, it’s far better than how Ruben has done.
I’ll get numbers for Kellie, and Ruben and Clay’s latest when I get’em.

That’s outstanding for Clay & Daughtry (2 non winners).

Chris is really doing his thing. And Carrie is still going at it. Even though IMO that season was the most boring, she’s proved to be real star who hasn’t forgotten how she got there.

That was the worst season for me too Carla. I had to make myself watch.

Chris is doing extremely well and I bet he will in the end have the best selling CD of a non-winner beating Clay Aiken’s.

Taylor did pretty good considering he has no video and no song on the radio. Fantasia is disappointing. She’s had a video, had a single, had promotion on the Tonight Show and TRL, and all she ended up with was an almost 50% drop off from her debut album. I think she’ll have a long career as a niche R&B artist but I don’t see her becoming a superstar ala Carrie or Kelly. Hope J gives her a second single and video. Maybe the CD can eventually make it to platinum
