9/23: Clay doesn’t answer the question

Here’s what Clay Aiken said to Diane Sawyer on GMA when she popped the question of his sexual orientation. It’s a non answer if there ever was one:

“I’ve gotten to a point now where I, A., am tired of trying, and B., I feel it’s kind of invasive, you know?” Aiken said.

“What I do in my private life is nobody’s business anymore. Period!”

“It’s one thing to try to be open and talk to people and try to share as much as I can and, and of course I want to,” he said. “But at some point it becomes just really rude, you know?”

Aiken said he didn’t understand the curiosity, Sawyer’s included, about his sexual orientation.

“I don’t understand why it’s any of your business,” he told Sawyer. “I don’t think you’re rude because I figure, you know, people have a job to do.”

“I’m not spending my time with this anymore,” Aiken said. “This is a waste of my time.”

Here’s where you can access video of Clay with Diane at least right now because this is a link to top videos

While living in L.A., he started getting panic attacks in small spaces and began taking Paxil to treat them. He’d also like to do a talk show.

We all know the answer to that question. If anyone is aked that and does not flat out deny it, then they are hiding something. He is so weird.

Clay Aiken is definitely a member of the Rainbow Club. Why hide it? If people didn’t know it after watching him on Idol then their radars are broken. Clay, we already know dude. Get the weight off of your shoulders like Lance Bass did so you’re not having those panic attacks anymore.

Why was his reaction so crazy? If someone asked me my sexual orientation, I would gladly answer. It’s part of who I am. And I am in no way ashamed of it.

He may be afraid of gay-bashers, but to not admit to who you are because of that is the coward’s way out.

well I guess the answer to that question is uuummm….YES! But really, why hide it. Everybody already knows. If you are gay, admit it and move on so people don’t have something to hold over your head all the time and you don’t have to be afraid during every interview that the question will be asked. Alot of people have come out and down right admitted they were, so now is best time. I don’t care either way because I don’t listen to his music, but some of his real fans may care!! Just say My name is Clay Aiken, and I like men. It’s just as easy as admitting any other thing. You true fans will embrace you, and to hell with the rest!!

Why don’t they leave the guy alone? He’s clearly straight, just like Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

I would assume at an instant’s glance that he is as gay as Liberace, but then with metrosexuality, it’s not quite as clear cut anymore. I will say if he ain’t gay, he sure plays a good gay guy on T.V. Also, he should keep to the straight and narrow, because if he ever runs afoul of the law, I can guarantee he will be having a lot of gay sex in prison, and he will not be asked first. He is as close to the perfect prison bit#@ as I’ve ever seen! I bet he’s a popular topic of discussion in Riker’s Island.

Clay has to realize with fame comes invasive questions. It’s a reality that many if not all “celebrities” go through. The fact that he became so defensive in front of Diane Sawyer, one of the most respected journalists in the business is very telling. He knew what types of questions would be asked of him, heck I knew that question was going to come up when I saw he was doing a sit down with her. If Clay wants to be a celebrity, he’s going to have to handle himself better. He looked like a whiny 16 year old girl.

By Deirdre

September 22, 2006 9:04 AM | Link to this

Good morning and hello. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in on this subject before I head back to work. I agree with Clay Aiken. Why is it anybody’s business? Yep, I know all the excuses…he’s a celebrity…he’s in the public eye but, my feeling about people who need to put their sex lives out for everyone to comment on is that they are people who crave attention or approval whether it be from their friends or from the public. If I enjoy Tom Cruise or John Travolta or Clay Aiken for their talent, why should their sex life matter? Am I curious…sure! Curiosity does not give me the right to know everything about them.

By Carla

September 22, 2006 9:08 AM | Link to this

Deirdre I agree it doesn’t give us the right to know about anyone’s sex life, but when you sign up for celebrity you’ve got to take the good with the bad. There is no more personal life. It’s said but true. There’s a price to pay for signing on the dotted line. Personally I could care less, but there are many people who buy People, US Weekly, etc every week just to see what goes on in other people’s lives.

By shay

September 22, 2006 9:12 AM | Link to this

I disagree. If Clay Aiken is a role model to my child or to other people in my circle of life, then as a celebrity/role model it is my business. Yes, it’s o.k. to buy my album and spend your hard earned money, but no you can’t ask me any questions about my character because it’s none of your business It was o.k. to know your business when I was buying your concert tickets. And getting defensive about it is definitely not the way to go. He could have easily just said “Sorry, but I just prefer not to discuss that matter” just as Michael Jackson has about being a virgin.

He did not say he is tired of saying he is not gay!How can he tire answering that one question when he goes to interviews to answer questions about his music etc anyway. Why tire of that one question? He is as gay as they come!

By Deirdre

September 22, 2006 9:17 AM | Link to this

Yes, as a celebrity, Clay has to expect those questions…what I’m saying is, he has a perfect right not to answer them. Say you had invented …the wheel…and Diane Sawyer, during and interview about that wheel, asked you if you had sex with your husband last night. Now, certainly, having sex with your husband is nothing to be ashamed about but…really…it isn’t anybody’s business. What happens between you and your husband has nothing to do with the wheel you invented. Diane may have had the right to ask you the question but there is absolutely nothing wrong with refusing to answer it! The ONLY thing refusing to answer says about you is that you want your personal life to remain at least somewhat personal.

By Wanda

September 22, 2006 9:19 AM | Link to this

The thing is, Clay has answered this question before. He has stated that he is not gay, so that should be good enough. But no, the journalists think if they keep asking they will get the answer they want. IMO, the question has been asked and answered, not that it’s anyone’s business. I can’t understand why anyone wants to know anyway. I would be p** off too, and if this is what Diane Sawyer is so respected for, she needs to be fired. Stupid, just stupid.

By Deirdre

September 22, 2006 9:22 AM | Link to this

Shay…what is Clay doing that wouldn’t be a good role model for your children? The fact that he may be gay doesn’t change the kind of generous and goodhearted person he is. I’m not defending Clay or gay people just stating that we need to judge people by their actions. Keeping his private life private seems like a pretty normal thing to do, to me. Now, if he was being accused of being a pedophile…that’s a whole different thing.

By mo

“Hey Mo… are you gay?”

“Well, no. No, I’m not. Thanks for asking.”

By Keith

I feel that if the average guy has that stigma on him and it is not true, he is going to shake it off ASAP!!!!!! So, if he were not gay, he would have set the record straight (no pun intended) with the quickness. Just say it and move on, don’t try to play both sides of the fence.

By shay

September 22, 2006 9:29 AM | Link to this

Deirdre, I see your point on the privacy issue but like Carla said, when you take on that celebrity life, you have no privacy and Clay knew that prior to becoming a star. You can’t just go to the grocery store anymore without your hair done and without being asked to sign 200 autographs. Your whole life changes. Asking someone if they had sex with their husband the night before is (and I may get criticized for saying this) normal, so you know that’s not a question that the public would want to know, but asking someone’s sexual orientation as a journalists, knowing that it is a subject of questionability and interest to the public is totally different. You are in the public eye and you have to expect these types of questions, whether they are true or not. Getting defensive to me is not the right answer. Now people definitely think that it’s true, and I am sure that’s not the message he wanted to give off. He wanted people to just respect his privacy but now alot of people feel that he just validated the fact that he is indeed gay. JMO!!

By Carla

Diedre there’s nothing wrong in not answering the question, but it’s the way it was answered. Getting defensive only leads to more speculation.

LOL Mo. Good Morning Everyone! Ooh, this is a juicy one.

Personally, I gives not a rat’s patooty what his orientation is. But I think the issue here is HOW he reacted to the question. Like someone said before, a simple “I prefer not to answer that question. Would have sufficed. But he went off like a guilty man being accused of a crime. A hit dog will holler.

By toepro

I don’t understand, what difference does it make? I would have responded with, “no Diane, I’m not, but do you swallow after oral?”

By Deirdre

September 22, 2006 9:46 AM | Link to this

OK…change the scenario…say that the rumors have been spreading that you and your husband are having problems. Now is the question out of line?

More and more celebrities are saying ENOUGH! And they should be….we are not entitled to get ourselves in their faces. The fact that they chose to be a celebrity is way beside the point. They chose to share their talent with us, not their lives. Saying that it’s just the way it is doesn’t excuse it! Signing autographs is totally different than discussing your private life on national TV. I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of this as time passes. Celebrities are already starting to close the door on personal questions. As long as their public lives make them good role models, what they do in the privacy of their own homes should be their business…unless it’s illegal. Whether Clay Aiken is gay or not..as long as he’s behaving himself in public, his music, good or bad, should speak for itself, not be colored by our opinions of his sexual preferences.

By Deirdre

September 22, 2006 9:53 AM | Link to this

You’re upset with HOW he answered the question? If you were asked the same obnoxious question 10 times a day…do you think you might get a little testy? I don’t think he cares one way or the other what people think about his being gay or not gay. I think he would rather talk about his music and his presidential appointment and the good things he’s done with UNICEF. And yes, he should have just said that but he wanted to have his say on the subject.

By toepro

Deirdre, you’re way off base here! Maybe we should all move to this Utopian Society you seem to imagine! The fact of the matter is, once a person accepts the fact that they have become a celebrity, there is no such thing as a Private Life, fans and fame don’t allow this! Not one person on this message board cares about problems between my wife and I, but let Brad and Angelina have problems, it’s national news because they are celebrities!

By Keith

September 22, 2006 10:01 AM | Link to this

Yes he does care about what people think, if not he would answer the question the first of the ten times he was asked. It is evident he is hiding something, he was so defensive. He is not a role model for my kids, my daughter wanted to see him in concert, I told her NO!

By shay

September 22, 2006 10:01 AM | Link to this

Deirdre, all of that would be o.k. IF that’s how society was. You know that’s not the case. In today’s world, if a question is asked and you dance around the answer, your butt is hiding something… point blank. Of course celebrities would like to live in a world where they could just do their careers and then go home to their private lives. That’s not how it is and never will be. That’s why we have news and magazines, and entertainment on television, etc. That’s how millions of dollars are made. And celebrities know this going into the business. That’s just the way it is right now!!! I believe that he is gay. How hard was it to say “NO”.

And to answer your question, my idea of a role model for my child and someone else’s idea of a role model may be different. Now I was raised by my parents that a man should be with a woman and vice versa. I teach my kids the same beliefs because my religion does not think homosexuality is right. That’s just how I was raised. But someone else may not have a problem with it. That’s fine. Do I judge Clay any different on his music if he is, no. The man can sing his butt off and should have won that year. But that does not mean I have to like it or want my kids exposed to same sex relationships at the age of 2 and 9 and to my child, he would not be considered a role model because our beliefs are the total opposite. For example, say your child loved Britney Spears to death and worshipped the ground she walked on, and found out that she liked to have sex with twins at the same time. So now your daughter, who has looked up to this girl since she was a little kid, thinks its o.k. to do the same. Hell No!!! It may be Britney’s business, but she is considered a role model to that child and her parents may not want her exposed to that type of behavior. So when something is taking place outside of the norm for me and my beliefs, then yes it is my business. Besides that, whether he is gay or not, he should have just answered the question with an obvious “no” or “I prefer not to answer that” meaning I am.

To all the nosy, meddling folks who need a life. Clay’s sexual preference is none of your business. Society is so intent on being judgemental and gossiping about people who have made it. Who gives a poot one way or the other. His personal life is his business and his alone. Personally I love to hear him sing, and I don’t care what his preference is. One more thing, what does his sexual preference have to do with him being a recording artist?

Wow, it’s pretty heated in here today. That’s cool. Just keep it nice.

Why did he get so upset when she asked the question? If somebody asked me the same question and I were “celebrity”, I may laugh because it’s been asked before, but I would simply say “No, I’m not. Can we move on please?” Or something to that affect. No need to get upset.

Mary, the key words are not him being an artist, its him being a role model while being an artist. And in that aspect, it is everyone’s business. By Wanda

Okay, if the question were not asked repeatedly by journalists (and I use the term loosely) then we wouldn’t have to listen to speculation about gay or not gay. Or in the case of other stars, slut or not slut, etc. Stop asking those kind of questions and you won’t get rude answers. As Jason from Rockstar Supernova said, if the press gets rude with you, you have every right to get rude right back. Diane, and others, have been downright rude. What kind of mainstream journalist thinks this is news? Diane needs to go to work for the Enquirer if she has to ask these kinds of things.

This whole business reminds me of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The republicans wanted to crucify Clinton for what he did, but yet they wanted to make sure that every filthy detail was broadcast on the nightly news for our kids to see and hear. The result? Now teenagers no longer consider oral sex as sex.

I’m sick of “journalists” slinging smut in our faces just for ratings. I don’t give a flying fig if Clay is gay or not. It is none of my business. Heck if he were my SON it would still be none of my business. Period. End of rant. Case closed.

I wish everyone would leave Clay alone about his sexuality. He is a human being period! He has a wonderful voice and it would be a sin if people chose not to listen to him just because of his sexuality. We, the general public, do not have to know every intimate detail of a celebreties life!! It makes me mad that people judge people solely based on their race, their religion, or their sexuality! LEAVE CLAY ALONE AND QUIT HOUNDING HIM ABOUT HIS SEXUALITY!!!!

I just think that if you take on the celebrity status at your own free will, then you should expect the questions. Just be prepared to answer them in a non confrontational way. If he has been asked this question 100 times, then he should have known how to answer 100 times without getting upset. Obviously it’s true.

By Shaun

WHOA, heated day in here…. I think it is our business. Especially in today’s society, he needs to answer that question. D said celebs are shying away from the public knowing too much about their personal life, I disagree. With all the reality shows that celebs are doing, they are brining the camera’s into their bedroom, ie: Being Bobby Brown, The Osbournes, Run’s House, Jessica and Nick, Anna Nicole, and the list goes on and on. So, if you as a celeb are allowed the sit at a restaurant without waiting (I have to wait) and o move to the front of any line to an event because you are a celeb, then answer the questions that are asked.

By Deirdre

September 22, 2006 10:30 AM | Link to this

toepro… Brad and Angelina don’t answer the questions, do they? They try to keep their private life private! Whether the public wants to know or not! Yes, they are followed by paparazzi wherever they go and yes, there is tons of speculation….but the info we get about them doesn’t come from THEM! They are a very private couple even though we see them on magazine covers all the time.

50 years ago very few people knew that Rock Hudson was gay. His public life could have been a good role model for anyone! His private life was his business and he and the studios worked hard to keep it that way. Now we have people like Britney Spears who is an open book about EVERYTHING and she’s a HORRIBLE role model.

If a celebrity chooses to open up their lives to the public, that’s their choice. There are a lot of celebrities out there now who refuse to answer questions that they believe are too personal. That opens the door to speculation, innuendo and outright lies about them. Most of us are smart enough to recognize the difference.

It overshadows all that he accomplished as an actor and philanthropist! I think you see the world through rose colored glasses. Exactly what questions have Bradgelina been asked and not answered? Celbrity lives are open to the public whether they want them to be or not! It’s the nature of the business!

By Deirdre

September 22, 2006 11:09 AM | Link to this

Shay, I think you missed my point. Rock Hudson was gay yet most people never knew it. He lived his public life in a way that would strike anyone as a good role model. No mom, whether her religious beliefs denounced homosexuality or not, would have had any objections to her child emulating the public Rock Hudson. Many parents are horrified by Ms Spears’ public behavior. A celebrity who keeps his/her private life private is very hard to find these days because we have a society that encourages the press to go after them. What I’m saying is that, without proof and without a celebrity answering all the questions, rude or otherwise, all we have is speculation. Some celebrities would rather live with the speculation than provide the proof. Clay Aiken answered the gay question a long time ago. Most people don’t believe his answer, therefore he is asked the same question repeatedly. So, if he says no again….they’ll just keep asking! And if he says yes, he is then judged by his answer rather than his talent. So he’s between a rock and a hard place. He has chosen to let the speculation continue.

By Deirdre

September 22, 2006 11:15 AM | Link to this

toepro…you’re kidding about brangelina, right? They hired an entire gov’t in a small African country to keep the press away from them for the birth of their child! Everything else you hear, including all those ridiculous magazine covers, is speculation and innuendo.

Deirdre, I see your point but I still think he could have “not answered the question” in a nicer way instead of getting defensive. I have never heard the question being asked to him, so me as a new listener would not have understood the frustration in his voice. My first reaction was ” man, it must be true, why would he get that upset about it unless it was true”. Had he smiled and said “sorry, but I chose to not answer that question” I would have felt different.

I agree with that Shay…yes, he could have answered differently and it would have helped the situation.

My problem is with the prevailing attitude that just because someone is a celebrity, we have the right to know EVERYTHING about them…we don’t! Yes, I agree that we are demanding information and that the celebrity press is doing anything and everything to get that info for us. And If they can’t get the info, they make something up. When did this become alright? Why is tabloid journalism allowed to exist…and don’t give me that freedom of the press stuff! I believe our forefathers were referring to the press being another check in the system of checks and balances, not an entity that follows people around and digs through their garbage cans; the press as a tool for enlightenment not an instrument for getting pictures of people taking showers. My utopian world as someone called it, is just a place where people(yes, even celebrities) are allowed to live their lives without other people asking them personal questions on national TV.

Deirdre now steps down from her soapbox and goes back to doing the laundry. She will not discuss whether or not she and her hubby will be having sex tonight

Morning sickness….eeewwww!! I too had problems at work Ken because I was so sick and others didn’t understand. I would just lay my head on my keyboard for hours because I couldn’t even sit up. I lost like 20 pounds those first three months.

And you couldn’t come on here and tell me I was about to be an aunty. I should whip your butt, after the baby gets here of course.

Homosexuality is one of the protected classes under the discrimination act. Our employers can’t ask that question of us, why should any singer answer it? Of course, it HAS been asked and answered repeatedly, but they keep on keeping on.

Kendra, honey, a baby is a happy thing even if the little critter makes you sick for the first few months. I’m not getting ‘happy’ from you. Are you ok? Not prying and you are not obligated to give any details but I’m just hoping to cheer you up a bit!

We’ll do what we can to help you forget about all the aches and pains. Some pregnancies aren’t the most fun you’ve ever had :) Maybe all your probelms now are leading up to an easy delivery! Congrats, Ken!

Hell to the naw!!!

Did you ever think maybe Clay reacted that way to start a controvery so that when his album comes out he’ll be in the news and people will go out and buy. There’ve been crazier marketing ploys.

While we’re making announcements, I have one (admittedly, Ken’s is much better than mine but y’all know what an attention hog I am).

The 25 year old just signed a contract to buy his first house up in Cumming! Anybody live or work in that area?

Naw, Deirdre. You won’t see me going to Cumming (sorry, but I had to do it). But that is great news. The first house is always exciting.

Ken, stay strong and make sure you get your rest. And milk it for all it’s worth. Whosoever feels the urge to wait on you hand and foot, so let it be.

Carla, Ken’s out now. So it’s just you and me at the clubs. That means we have to party extra hard.

Ken, that little baby will be worth all of the morning sickness. Deirdre, tell your son congratulations from the blog. When I bought my first house, I was so happy I was tryin’ to move in before they finished putting the roof on it!! Now I am transitioning into my second home purchase. I’m a big girl now. So now I am moving from a hut to a brick shack!!!

Carla, did you ever sell your home and what ever happened to that crazy neighbor of yours?

By Jex

September 22, 2006 2:01 PM | Link to this

Okay, this is more like it - calm and quiet in here.

Deirdre, tell the truth. Who’s more excited about the new house - you or your son? I don’t think men feel it like we do. I lost weight, lost hair and nearly lost my mind when we got our first house. But looking back on it, I would definitely do it all over again.

Ken, make sure you don’t stress yourself out. Stress does more damage than people think, especially at a time like this.

Jex, did you sell your home?

September 22, 2006 2:18 PM | Link to this

That’s good Carla. Hopefully it sells here soon. How long has it been on the market? I am putting mine up for sale in two weeks and hope it sells fast so that I can make some extra cash and move into a bigger home.

Girl, no. So I just have to tough it out. I didn’t really want to sell it anyway. I just got a part time job to make those ends get together. So it’ll be hard, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

My house better sell before Christmas. I don’t want to be moving at Christmas. But its a nice home and I shouldn’t have any problems selling it. Well I hope I don’t.

Thanks for the good words, girls! Jex, I’m probably more excited. My son is a little panicky at the moment. Something about signing that paper made him a little nervous :) But he’s the one who decided he’d had enough of paying rent. He and his girl friend will be moving in at the end of Nov. They’re going to work on painting the walls and refinishing the cabinets before they move in. I keep laughing at him cuz he’ll have to buy a lawn mower!

September 22, 2006 2:50 PM | Link to this

Deirdre, that’s funny because there are SO many things you don’t think about until you get into the house. Especially a new one. We had to buy a mailbox. I was like - where the heck do you buy a mailbox? But, duh. Good ol’ WalMart. Lawn mower, blinds, curtain rods, toilet paper holder…. It went on forever. I’m still buyin’ stuff.

OMG Jex!! I go to Walmart sometimes about 10:00 a night so that I can walk around and eat and look around. Bring that credit card on over to my house and I will drive us up there.
