9/1: Kelly wins another MTV Video award

Kelly Clarkson, who is out on the road and not at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York, tonight nonetheless collected her best female moonman award for the second year in a row, this year for “Because of You.” (Last year, it was for “Since U Been Gone,” which she performed and got soaking wet.)

By the way, I got SO bored by the VMAs, I skipped out halfway through. So much for MTV’s advertising that it would be “bigger, badder.” Rather it was “bigger, blander.” Even Jack Black failed to bring the thunder. Shockingly, the Emmys were far more entertaining and funny.

8/31: Simon says no Mariah, Whitney, Celine copycats

In The Daily News, Simon during a break from listening to singers in New York City Wednesday noted singers and songs he’d recommend singers stay away from because he’s sick of them:

“I’m bored of girls singing Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion - because they’re not going to be as good. I’m totally over ‘Falling’ by Alicia Keys. I can’t hear that song again or ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ or ‘At Last’ by Etta James. I just can’t hear them, or ‘Crazy’ by Patsy Cline. It’s like literally a finger going down the blackboard.”

I expect things will be real quiet here but have a great Labor Day!

9/1: Idol tour biggest ever

As noted in this blog before, the fifth edition of the “American Idol” tour has easily eclipsed the popularity of any of the first four. Here’s the USA Today story today.

Through Aug. 2, the tour had raked in $14.6 million and had been seen by more than 265,000 fans, Billboard figures show. It appears almost every show is sold out or close to sold out. In past years, some venues showed capacity levels of 60 percent or fewer, especially season three.
