8/30: Why didn’t Carly get cut?

Okay. My first dispatch about “Celebrity Duets.” It wasn’t quite as fun as I had expected. Sure, Little Richard was near incomprehensible, making Paula Abdul seem like JFK in comparison. His commentary was basically taking the name of the song and try to twist it into something, anything. Marie Osmond gabbed too much, leaving too little time for David Foster, who was clearly annoyed. I was actually expecting more interesting commentary from Foster and didn’t get it. And Wayne Brady was blander than ever. But he does do a good imitation of the “Carlton.”

In general, the non-singer celebs were almost too good to be campy, but not good enough to be great. The exception: Jai Rodriguez. That guy should be signed immediately. He is clearly the front runner, if America votes correctly. It was nice to see some of those legends, especially James Ingram and Georgia’s own Gladys Knight (Smokey Robinson didn’t sound good at all), but I’m not sure this will be a must-watch week in and week out. I can also live without Lee Ann Womack or Michael Bolton. Too bad they couldn’t get any rock stars or even pseudo rock stars like Bryan Adams or Rod Stewart.

Of the others, Lucy Lawless has potential and looks hot as a blond. Alfonso Ribeiro is goofy and has great stage presence, even if his vocals can get sloppy. He’ll be around awhile. A surprisingly stiff Cheech Marin reminds me of some random dude at a late-night karaoke bar. David Foster was much too kind to him. I can see him going home quickly. Lea Thompson has some skills and she’s aging like fine wine. Hal Sparks? A white boy trying way too hard. I don’t think he’ll last either.

Gold medalist Carly Patterson was clearly out of her element away from the gymasium (though it seems she’s been hanging at the Mickey D’s instead since she retired.) I personally thought she was by far the weakest and sorry, I hate “I Hope You Dance” anyway. I thought Chris Jericho’s first performance was weak, like he was overcompensating for being a rocker and big-time wrestler by trying to do sensitive. Didn’t work. I didn’t mind his duet with Peter Frampton rocking out “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” But that was a bad song choice. Why were these two doing an R&B classic instead of something a bit more rock like Boston or the Cars or, well, anything from the 96rock playlist?

Ratings were somewhat disappointing: 8.1 million viewers. That’s worse than “So You Think You Can Dance,“ slightly better than “Hell’s Kitchen.” This is proof it’s difficult to beat the original — or in this case, TWO originals in “Dancing with the Stars” and “American Idol.”

Anyway— let’s have you thoughts!

Good Morning! I didn’t even recognize Carly as Carly the gymnast. Did she have a couple of kids? Well, I guess it has been awhile, but she’s changed quite a bit.

I didn’t catch the show until the end when they were reviewing everyone’s performance. And from what I heard, …I’m glad I missed the show.

Rodney, overall I was bored. I thought the show would be a little bit more hyped with everyone on stage being somewhat a celebrity. Carlton, I mean Alfonso, did good and definitely has good stage presence but Jai was “da bomb”. He will probably win unless somebody else just comes along a totally change throughout the weeks. I was even more disappointed in the celebrity singers. They are the ones who need the help. Michelle Williams need to eat and Gladys need to lay off the waffles. But I did enjoy seeing all of them. And I don’t like Little Richie judging. He got on my nerves!

It’s a decent show but it looks like the producers have more experience with making money than putting together a good ‘variety’ program for tv.

The stage is huge, but it looks so empty for the unseasoned performers..and there’s no setting for each songs whatesoever.

I thought the show was fun. Little Richard did a good Paula immitation. Isn’t that the same house band as Idol, and the same set?

I tell you what, Michelle and Jai were sooooooooo hot! After that performance, I believe they are considered legally married in some states!

When Carly started “singing”, my husband and I shouted “get the hook!”

Rodney, don’t be talkin bout my Michael Bolton now!

I was glad to see everybody singing on stage again, but overall I didn’t like the show. It was so easily compared to idol because of the set up, but the stage seemed to big, the lighting wasn’t good for me, and I know Halloween is coming up, but does little Richie have to look like a ghost. I mean, he had on more lip liner than I have on.

I love Jai. He’s always been my fav queer eye guy. He and Michelle had great chemistry on say my name. He is so far ahead of the others. I thought Alphonso was good along with Lea Thompson and Lucy. Lucy’s second song with Smokey was very good. I like Hal. He’ll forever be sweet Michael to me, but his rock thing was cool. Cheech and Jericho were the worst to me. And somebody needs to tame Little Richard. When he said that his big toe shot up in his boot, I almost died.

that is cool Shay, I hate it when my mother in law comes, but my father in law is kool, he is remarried and his new wife is kool too. Remember the spray on one end and the pick on the other end of the bottle!!! LOL!!

Mornin’ All (including you Shaun ~¿@)!!

It is so nice to have a talent competition to comment on again! Ok, first of all, Carly needs to be thanking Marie Osmond for keeping her talentless self around. Because that girl can’t sing! I can run a cat through a pasta strainer and get a better sound than that. Maybe next time she hangs out at McD’s she can take Micelle with her, because that girl needs some meat on her bones.

Jericho was pretty good. Better than Cheech! Frampton and Jericho Signed, Sealed Delivered was an odd choice. He came out rockin’ and that song just ain’t hardly rock.

Hal Sparks shocked me at how good he was, and a real cutie too. He really rocked out the songs and gave it his all. What was wrong with Smokey last night? Has he been sick or something? He sounded pretty bad.

Lea Thomspon sounded pretty bad to me, she was trying too hard and seemed pretty cocky. Carlton, I mean Alfonso, was great. He really got into it and has a great voice.

Jai was awesome! He and Michelle set the stage on fire!!

Yes, Wanda, it was the same backup band that they used on idol, looked like the same set too. With a few minor changes. Same little catwalk behind the judges…everything.

Overall, it was a pretty good show. It should make some ratings and money and pull a few careers out of the trash bin.

My prediction: this won’t be as big as “Dancing with the Stars,” ratings wise. I think it will be along the lines of “So You Think You Can Dance” (which averaged about 9 million viewers per episode) but skew older.

By Carla

August 30, 2006 10:58 AM | Link to this

On So You Think You Can Dance they always said that it was the number 1 show of the summer. Is that 9 million about right for summer viewership? Is that even a word?

By Jex

August 30, 2006 11:00 AM | Link to this

It seems like the real singers actually held back last night. At one point, Gladys was actually just standing and smiling. Patti would definitely have to pump the brakes.

By Jex

August 30, 2006 11:06 AM | Link to this

I don’t think the show will amount to much. Maybe if they had current celebrities it would be a little more exciting. But I’m saying that only from the snippets and the last ten minutes of last night show because that’s all I’ve seen. I didn’t even recognize a few of the celebrities. Who was the guy who got voted off?

I went to the taping of the show yesterday. We sat pretty close to the stage. I can honestly say that it did sound better live. When we got home I watched it on TV, and it did sound different. It was great to see some of the legends sing! Gladys Knight was so sweet! She seemed to be really happy to be there. The crowd went nuts over her! She is all class! My son was able to get some autographs even though they don’t encourage that. Little Richard was hilarious! He is just there to add “color” I mean that in a good way! He is VERY funny!Weird, but I thought it was good to have him as a judge. Marie Osmond is very sweet. I was glad to see her working like that again. I’m not sure why they had David Foster. He was DULL! I think that this show will do very well. The Buzz in the audience was REALLY Good! I do predict that ALfonso will win it. He is the most vocally trained out of all of them.

By mystique

August 30, 2006 11:19 AM | Link to this

Jex, that was Chris Jericho. He is a WWE wrestler. I am sure that current celbs would make the show a lot more popular, but they wouldn’t sign on to do a show like this. Celebs only do this kind of stuff when they are hurting for money :) Or if they see opportunity to gain popularity. But if the show takes off, similar to Dancing with the Stars did, then expect higher profile celbrities next season.

I just added the early ratings numbers for “Celebrity Duets.” A so-so 8.1 million viewers. Doen’t bode well for the future when it starts on its regular time slot Thursday, Sept. 7. Then again, it only runs six weeks untli the baseball playoffs. Easy in, easy gone.

Rodney it sort of sounded like a “filler” to me anyway, even Simon talking it up on commercials seemed a little half-hearted … but then with Cowell, who KNOWS what he’s really thinking (joke!)

it’s entertainment, but not particularly …h mmmmmm what’s the word i’m looking for … doesn’t make me want to speed to get home on time or make sure someone puts in a tape!

By Rodney Ho

August 30, 2006 1:46 PM | Link to this

As for the earlier comment about “So You Think You Can Dance.” It drew consistently the best numbers in the money demo 18 to 49 over a relatively lackluster summer for the broadcast networks. (No show broke out like “American Idol” in 2002 or “Dancing With the Stars” in 2005.) “America’s Got Talent,” which skewed older, drew the most total viewers. Last night, “Big Brother” actually had bigger overall ratings and better 18-49 numbers than “Celebrity Duets.” “Celebrity Duets” beat “Rock Star: Supernova” in overall viewers but they were about tied when it came to 18-49.

By Jex
