8/16: The Idol audition experience

Virtually every “Idol” auditon is the same story, the same deluded poorly talented hacks mixed with a handful of gems. The lines, the brief rejections, the lines, the hope of stardom, the lines.

Here’s a sample from first person perspective in New York.

Or this one from the Ashbury Park Press.

Or the Herald News.

Or the tabloid I laughed at while in college the Trentonian

Or something better written from the Philly Inquirer

morning!! O.k. here is my take on the audition process. I think it is a matter of luck when making it to the next round. Of course you have those that are naturally talented on stage, but that is only less than 5%. The rest make it to the top 12 by pure luck and a process of elimination that is biased. If you have one bad day, you are out of there. If you sound just “o.k.” you may or may not be sent to the next round. Some that sound very good get sent home because of other issues like appearance, song choice, etc. Out of 60,000 people auditioning, you can’t tell me that Diana Degarmo, Jasmine Trias, Justin Linguini, Pickler, Chicken Little, the little black kid who sang the Whiz song from season 2, etc were some of the best. I just don’t believe that!!

Morning. You’re funny shay. You know the producers choose the contestants that they know will give the show some pizazz. Of course there’s going to be your good singers, but they have to have people with personality (Mikayla) and those that you want to hate (Brenna) for ratings. Everything is about making money.

Morning Shay & Carla i’ll have to check these auditons out i’ll comment later, have a great day all!

By shay

August 16, 2006 8:47 AM | Link to this

I know Carla, but it’s not fair for someone with a little spunk like Mikayla to make the top 12 and then they send someone else who actually has talent home.

By Carla

August 16, 2006 8:52 AM | Link to this

Hey AB! Of course it’s not fair shay, but life isn’t fair. Many things in our own lives function the same way. Does every person with a high paying job deserve it? No! But they got the chance and maybe someone more qualified didn’t. Such is life!

If chicken little can make it to the top 12; anybody can make cause that poor guy could not sing. And to think he broke up with his girlfriend cause he said he would’nt have time for her now that he was a celebrity? Yeah right “chicken man”. Justin G. aka “Hair Boy” can not sing at all…let me start working i’ll check back in later….this blog can be contagious & i may need therapy

Oh hush up Carla! I know, I know. But that doesn’t mean I have to like the way the audition process goes. Heck, I should try out. Put a little extra money in my pocket and make a country album. I know about two country songs. Surely, I can be the next Queen of Country Music.

Carla & Shay may i ask what do you 2 do all day? I work from 8am-5pm and pop in on here when i can, i’m just curious and hopefully i’m not stepping nobody’s toes :-)

By shay

August 16, 2006 9:00 AM | Link to this

Apple Bottom, I work as a paralegal. I have some busy days and some not so busy days. I have my own office, bathroom, etc and I am the only person on my floor. I work from 7:45-4:45 M-F but my job is very flexible.

By Carla

August 16, 2006 9:07 AM | Link to this

You’re too old shay!:-) I work in insurance sales so my job is pretty flexible as well. I get here when I do and I leave when I get ready. Nah not really, but there’s no one looking over my shoulder. As long as my work gets done. I’m very good at multitasking.

By shay

August 16, 2006 9:07 AM | Link to this

Carla was working at Visions M-F until they closed and now she work with Jex at Majic City. Carla works the door and Jex dances.

Hey yall guess what, I was passing Majic City Sunday and this girl had been inside to get an application. She was starring at it like it was in French. And I said to my self, it couldn’t be that difficult to read. The questions were probably

Question #1 - What are your measurements? Question #2 - Do you have any client references? Question #3- Have you ever taken off your clothes before and been paid for it? Question #4 - Do you have any family that care if you dance in this club?

I mean come on, these aren’t trick questions.

Carla, I guess I am too old but Master P came out when he was like 49 so I can make an album too.

By Carla

August 16, 2006 9:10 AM | Link to this

Ha ha!! You’re a funny lady shay. AB don’t belive anything shay says. You go to a club once in awhile and now all of a sudden you work there. I can truly say I’ve never been to MC, but I can’t speak for Jex.:-) Dang shay were you getting an app too?? I think you put it out there yesterday that you have the assets for the job.

By Carla

But not on AI. Try Oprah’s pop star.

By shay

August 16, 2006 9:16 AM | Link to this

Girl, I am too old to be “dropping it like it’s hot”. I was just passing by hatin’ on the young ladies. Jex was trippin’ because she was there and i called her by her real name and she uses her stage name when she is working!

By Carla

August 16, 2006 9:18 AM | Link to this

What’s her stage name????

By shay

August 16, 2006 9:20 AM | Link to this

Flexy Jexy. That girl can bend her body like you wouldn’t believe.

By mystique

Mornin’ All! It has been so busy around here! But I think I have finally crawled out from under the pile of work :)

Unfortunatley the audition process is only based on about 10% talent. The rest is made up by the all important looks and personality. They let the not so hot singers and total biatches through to create a little drama and interest. I mean, c’mon, would we really be that interested in it if there were nothing but flawless, sweet-natured singers. Probably not.

Girl, just apply at hooters with me! Tips are great and there isn’t nearly as much dropping it like its hot required.

By shay

August 16, 2006 9:36 AM | Link to this

I can do Hooters. Do I have to wear those booty orange shorts.

Mystique answers with a yes

I do, o.k. count me in!! What do you wear in the winter time?

I think you are just looking for a good excuse to wear some booty shorts shay. Um Mystique, where have you been?? You know it’s blog first work second.:-) AB, you ain’t seen nothing yet. When they get going, things can get a little out of hand on here. It try to control it, but it’s not much I can do.

Shay, Hooters on P’tree is hiring :)

Carla, I know. I got my priorities all screwed up! But I am back on track now.

Welcome AB! It has been known to get pretty wild in here. Strippers, liquor and speedos. Hope you are up for it!! Cross your fingers ladies that since school is back in session the MPD’s will leave us alone.

Dang, well, it was worth a try. I just thought that you ladies might sympathize with me. It is a painstaking process; wash, condition, brush and dry. Oh, and I broke 2 nails in the process! That is a lot of emotional strain. I needed time to recover :0

By Carla

August 16, 2006 10:54 AM | Link to this

That’s not gonna fly. You should know better mystique. I don’t know how you expect us to run a successful blog and you’re at home washing your hair. That needs to be done before or after blogging hours.

Linny, glad to cheer you up. Now back to you mystique….. wait….. where is Jex? O.k. Mystique, you are off the hook. Jex is making this a habit. Have yall noticed she always take off on Wednesdays. I guess the club ain’t really paying too much during the week. A girl has to have some time to run her errands so why not let it be on Wednesdays. Jex, give me change for a ten. And don’t give me all those $1’s. I know you have a whole stack of em’.

By mystique

I heard that ole Flexy Jexy does a matinee show down at MC on Wednesdays occasionally, those businessmen that come around for lunch need a good ho, ahem, blushing, I mean show!

OMG, do y’all need another reason to hate Justin Timberlake? Look over at the blog Rodney just posted. Timberlake is going to get his little butt beat if Jex reads that!!!!

Mystique, did Picadilly have fried catfish today? I love fried catfish :-)

By Carla

It’s usually 33. I had the catfish on Sunday and it was fabulicious.

By shay

August 16, 2006 2:34 PM | Link to this

I guess 28 and 42 is a bit much as far as the age difference but my husband is 10 years old than me, so who am I to talk.

By shay

August 16, 2006 2:36 PM | Link to this

33 is a good cut off age. 5 years difference makes sense especially if you plan on getting married and having kids. Carla, do you still want 10 kids?

By mystique

August 16, 2006 2:38 PM | Link to this

Sorry Wanda, didn’t see any fried catfish. I had some sort of baked fish and it was just so-so.

33? I guess mine would be about that. I would feel creepy dating anyone older than 40. Not that there is anything wrong with a person over 40, it just weirds me out to date someone about old enough to be my father.

By Carla

August 16, 2006 2:38 PM | Link to this

10??? WTH??? Where’d you get that from?

By shay

August 16, 2006 2:39 PM | Link to this

mystique, you are still young. Dating someone 40 would be too old for you.

By Carla

August 16, 2006 2:40 PM | Link to this

And I’m not still young?? What are you trying to say shay?

By shay

August 16, 2006 2:41 PM | Link to this

Didn’t you say you wanted to have alot of kids or was that someone else? I could have swore you said you wanted a football team of kids.

I need to. I will already be depressed from turning 30. The least I can do is get drunk in the process. My b-day is too close to New Years. Perhaps I should just have a New Years Jammy Jam. My b-day is Jan. 6.

This is off topic, but what isn’t? Every time we come to Atlanta, I try to go to the Fox. I promised my husband that I would take him there one day, since I think it is so awesome. I’m not picky, but every time we come it’s either some kids show playing, or the theatre is dark (like it will be this time). Then I check around town for any other concerts. Chastain has Santana, which ain’t my thing. It has to be good to get me to put up with Chastain. I even checked Lakewood Amp, or Hi Fi Buys, whatever, and its somebody I never heard of. Where do all the good shows go when I come home? We like all kinds of music, theatre, ballet, anything! I think they head for the hills when they hear I’m coming down I-75!

By mystique

August 16, 2006 4:43 PM | Link to this

You know we don’t have to stick to a topic around here! Wanda, we just don’t really get a lot of good shows lately. Good luck finding something!

Goodnight all :)
