8/9: Advice from past contestants

AP vetted the various Idol contestants for advice for future contestants.

Mostly, it’s along the lines of “be yourself.” Constantine is the gabbiest of the bunch. My favorite line:

If you make it, he said your newfound fame likely comes with a sell-by date.

“There’s going to be a huge buzz when you’re on ‘American Idol’ and shortly when you get off it, and then there will be a quiet time. And for 99.9 percent of the people, it will remain quiet. They’re not going on to great things. That’s just a fact, Jack.”

If you want a fairly endless amount of coverage from the Pasadena tryouts, the USA Today Idol Chatter blog works it and works it and works it.

I just spoke with Mike Hardee, Taylor’s local buddy from Auburn who is helping book gigs for the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra. He said Taylor didn’t leave Thursday night but also didn’t go to the after party at Wild Wing Cafe. Rather, Hardee said Taylor went to Buckhead’s Tongue & Groove.

Morning. Constantine is hilarious. It’s interesting that many of them said to be yourself. But doesn’t the show try to change people’s images, ie. Clay Aiken. I liked him being himself, not the metrosexual with the Ryan hair they tried to turn him into.

haven’t had time to read yet… Connie always was clever, i liked him. And my middle son looks a lot like him, and being a natural mimic, was able to capture the quintessential “Constantine” expressions … much to the amusement of his friends and family. [but then he does a great Jim Carey too…what can a proud(?) mom say?]

totally off topic, well at least it’s industry-related, can any of you tell me why Dallas Austin is being selected for the Georgia Music HoF? Sorry, but i just don’t get it. am i being too ‘white’? help me out here girlfrien’s!!!!!

Good Morning! What is wrong with the world when Constantine gives the best advice to the idols?!? He was so chatty and told it like it is….I think I have a whole new respect for him.

linny, Dallas has produced records for many artists. Although he’s more known for TLC, he’s been involved with artists in all genres. He’s very talented, a bit eccentric, but very successful. He’s a behind the scenes guy unlike a Jermaine Dupri or Diddy. I think it’s warranted. JMO.

It’s funny how he went somewhere other than where his band and fans were going to be. What’s up with that?

Morning yall. I just got to work. Had to go register my 9 year old stepson for school. It was crazy at the school but it brought back a lot of memories. Was the cafeteria that little when we were in school??

By Shaun

Good Morning everyone, Linny, I do not agree with the things that Dallas Austins does/did, but he has written major hits for various artist. He wrote “my baby’s got a secret” for Madonna, he put Boys to Men on the map by writing and producing their first cd, he discovered Monica, and also wrote most of the hits for TLC. I think he does deserve the honor of the GMHOF.

By Carla

August 9, 2006 10:32 AM | Link to this

You have to register kids every year? That’s a big headache. And yes, the cafeteria was always that small, we were just smaller too.

By shay

August 9, 2006 10:34 AM | Link to this

Yep, you have to register kids every single year but this is his first year living with us. He was living with his mom in Douglas County so I had to start from scratch. I guess when you are 5 or 6, the cafeteria looks huge but when I went in there, I was like man, how in the world did the whole school fit in here when we had assembly programs.

Taylor knew that there was going to be an afterparty and that his band and fans would be there. Why did he choose to go shake it at tounge and groove instead? How about that….I think Taylor and I are having our first lovers quarel! I am a little upest with him right now. If he calls let him know I am just not ready to talk :-) And let him know I prefer pink roses!

Hi Shay and Shaun! I don’t know much about Dallas Austin but I am sure he is great. Registering?!? I bet that is a pain. Ya know, I don’t think I would want to do the school thing again, but it would be nice to be 9 and have no worries!! No need to work, someone else paying your bills, doing everything for you. Yeah, I would like a piece of that!

lol…Shaun, i come down 316 to ga 20 then up to mall of georgia, down 85 to about sugarloaf, then over to the access lanes to boggs, and down satellite ….. zigging over to p’tree industrial … cutting across tilly mill by perimeter college and across to perimeter mall… sort of a ziggyzaggy route, but it’s worked so far… 316 is the pits with the construction at 85, i NEVER go that way anymore… takes me right at 2 hours, sometimes less, so it’s not TOOOOO bad, considering some people 30 miles out spend almost as much time on the road!!!

Hey Everybody! I am so mad! I had so much work to do today, I’ve been missing out on the fun over here. Now I have to play catch up.

I always thought Constantine was quite a character. I’m actually surprised we haven’t heard more from him. I think Dallas is very deserving. If you ‘re not familiar with the genre he supports, you wouldn’t be aware of all he’s done. Good for him. When I was a kid, we couldn’t afford Members Only jackets, but what I miss is the smell of peanut butter cookies baking in the school cafeteria on cool autumn mornings. That was the best thing ever! Ah, to be a kid again. And I LOVE salmon – especially croquettes!

Oh yeah! Taylor went to Tongue and Groove because I asked him to mystique! I didn’t want you and all the other little groupies trying to ruin our fun.

Hey Carla. I don’t know if the cookies were made from scratch or if they were Pilsbury. But I used to live for the days of peanut butter cookies. I think it was every Thursday. To this day when I smell peanut butter cookies, I think about walking in the door of the school, feeling that warmth, and the smell of those cookies. Mmmmmmmmmmm… . .

I have been to Papadeux’s and other fancy schmancy seafood places and they still can’t beat RL. They just have more bang for the buck. And the biscuits! Oh my gosh, the biscuits.

Did I read someone mention cheddar biscuits at RL and garlic bread and OG. OMG!!! I can eat a whole basket of both!!! Fake Cynthia, you are a hoot! Jexy, I remember the school baking cookies. We usually got them on Friday with our small square pizza, corn, and salad. That was my favorite meal. A carton of milk was perfect to wash it down with. Oh, I loved it when we had cheeseburgers and fries too. Now, I wouldn’t be caught dead eating cafeteria food. I ate lunch with my step son one day and almost vomited. The food looked discusting and he thought it was the best! And why did they give you mac and cheese back then with a sausage link. That don’t match. Or pizza and corn. That don’t match. Or a sloppy joe sandwich and that nasty orange carrot and raisin salad. Non of this stuff matches with each other.

i’m not quite that rigid, shay, but i do find myself ordering “my favorite” when i go out (depending on the place of course)— and then chastising myself for not being “brave”!!! sometimes hubby will kick me under the table before i order, reminding me i “promised” to try something different… but only if he does too, so we can swap bites and compare “new” dishes!

he loves to figure out spicing so he can go home and improve on what he’s been fed, lol

incorrigible, but usually resulting in something awfully yummy!!! he’s even developed his own special spice mix for baking chicken or pork and OMG it is soooooooooooo good!

well…now that i swear i’ve gained yet ANOTHER five pounds from this post…i better go work it off!!!

RL…Boardwalk Shrimp ( it’s a light meal which leaves plenty of room for the cheddar biscuits)

Chili’s….Chicken fajita pita

Ruby Tuesday’s….either the crispy chicken club burger (which I believe they have recently dropped from the menu) or the classic BBQ ribs

Ted’s Montana Grill…the meatloaf(oMG, the meatloaf)

Macaroni Grill…either the chicken canneloni or the eggplant parmesan

Carrabba’s….the mezzaluna!

Longhorn….Chicken tenders

Outback…I love the blue cheese chopped salad

OK…I’ll stop now…Geez, I must be really hungry this afternoon.

Carla did you go to middle school with me? We did the same thing. I hated C lunch or 3rd lunch. First of all, when you get to lunch, all of the other people have bought up everything and then secondly, you didn’t get to eat until like 12:30. They used to sell us those giant cookies about the size of a frisby for like $.50. I would buy one of those, an icecream, plus my lunch. I could do that back then. I was burning like 500 calories an hour.

the old 3$ cafe used to have awesome chicken tenders, big as a whole breast sometimes… and sooooooooooooooo juicy! anyone been there lately? i know the business changed ownership a while back…

i guess food is in the marriage…for our “wedding reception” we (me, hubby, and our two best friends as attendants) went to Lums by Georgia Tech for beer hotdogs — all squished together in a mini austin — for those of you too young to remember Lums, it was a crazy place, they boiled hotdogs in beer, really, and the place smelled like beer beer beer… and mini austins were about the size of the mini coopers today, maybe a bit SMALLER… and my hubby was the only THIN THIN THIN person in the car…

ah those were the days….

They probably served the same lunches to all the middle schools in GA shay.

Ok, well I am starving now. I have got to go out to eat tonight!

Oooooh, Deirdre, a copperhead?!? Yuck! Snakes scare me to death.

Oooh! US Cafe has the best Lemon Pepper Chicken wings. I used to like the one’s a Buffalo’s, but they drowned them in grease one day and it freaked me out.

Thin, what’s that?? The only thing thin in my house anymore are the thin mints I bought from some girl scouts back in March.

I killed one about 7/8 months ago. that one had been biting my brittany(spaniel not Spears) all summer. she’d been at the vet 3 times for snake bite. I saw it one day…just swallowed my fear and went after it with a hoe (that’s the gardening tool, not the prostitute) This time, I went out at about 7:15 yesterday morning to let her out of her kennel and she wouldn’t come out…which is really odd…I looked down, and there at my feet was a copperhead, ready to strike….I went and got my trusty hoe again. I would really prefer not to kill these snakes but I would prefer not having to take my dog to the vet every couple of weeks even more. Makes me braver than I would normally be!

What’s considered thin?

August 9, 2006 2:44 PM | Link to this

Carla… as noted by my b/d… i prolly preceded you guys into middle (back THEN we called it “Junior High” AND i was in Florida for those years, but …

guess what!!! square pizza, served with corn of course, little containers of plain or chocolate milk, carrot/raisin salad…. spaghetti (also with corn for some reason) and EVERY once in a while lasagna with green beans (actually not a bad combo)….

so it must be universally required, mandated, or something…. maybe it’s a universal law!

Deirdre, you are a trooper. I don’t think I could’ve done it.

DEE!!! any copperhead you can kill, you go right ahead girl!!!! UGH! I hope your brit.spaniel is ok!!!!! and i LOVE your humorous twist to the tale.. or was that tail?

August 9, 2006 2:47 PM | Link to this

Wow Deirdre! I admire you for that. I wouldn’t have had the guts. I don’t think so anyway. And how nice of mystique to help you kill it.

By Deirdre

August 9, 2006 2:49 PM | Link to this

I have a little Norwich Terrier, too, and i think a copperhead bite might make him really sick…so, even though the brittany can tolerate it, I don’t think Gus could…he’s just too small. It’s my motherly instincts coming out.

By shay

Deirdre, there has got to be something you can buy to put down to keep the snakes away.

By Carla

August 9, 2006 2:52 PM | Link to this

I’ve heard my neighbors talk about seeing snakes, but I never have. I don’t like things that can move faster than me. Whether that be by crawling, flying, hopping, etc.

By ,,,=^..^=,,,

yeah Deirdre, tho i don’t think the dogs would particularly favor a mongoose (that IS what they used to keep around in india to scare off snakes, right?)

Carla, you are considered thin. A size 6 and you do 500-1000 crunches a day and can where a bathing suit. I wear a size 8 but I consider myself overweight because I am a flabby size 8.

Snake away or lime right?

By Deirdre

August 9, 2006 2:54 PM | Link to this

You would think someone would have invented a snake repellent by now, wouldn’t you. I wouldn’t dream of killing a non-poisonous snake…I do understand that they keep the rodent population down….but really, what is a poisonous snake doing in the suburbs? Shouldn’t they be out in the wild…or in zoos…or nature habitats?

hmph

size 6? size 8?

i don’t THINK i was a size 6 when i was 6 years OLD!!! tho i did used to be thin (those who have the pics, the middle one with pigtails, i had actually already had a child by then, but not the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) … but i think the smallest adult size i could possibly have ever been was 10, more probably 12!!! and i was NOT hefty at all in those days!!! considered too thin by many!!!

wow…size 6

linny bows to you in respect

Deirdre, there is hardly any “wild” left around big cities. That’s why there’s an increase in animals being in back yards and malls. They are being run out of their natural habitat by the developers.

I know, Jex…it’s really kinda sad that we keep taking up the space that wild animals need to survive. We have a large deer population around here (unfortunately, deer do not eat snakes)They like to eat my flower bushes!

My husband orders the same darn thing when we go out. I try to get him to try something different but he is stuck in a rut! If we go to chinese, it’s sweet and sour chicken. Anywhere else, it’s a cheeseburger and fries.

Did you know you can make the RL cheddar biscuits with Bisquick? The recipe used to be on the box. But boy is that dangerous!

At least rabbits don’t bite dogs…unless the dog bites first, of course. My brittany, Maggie, gets herself into trouble with chipmunks all the time…which doesn’t seem possible…but those little devils can fight back!

Our tour guide in Jamaica told us that they imported mongoose(s?) to get rid of the snakes on the island. It worked, but then they went after all the chickens :-) So, the chicken nests are now built up on tall poles! LOL

By Deirdre

Well….eventually the chipmunk loses….but it is pretty amusing….until it gets kinda unpleasant to watch! Maggie is the kind of dog that gets into EVERYTHING. If it’s alive and in the back yard, she wants to play with it. She has, however, learned her lesson with snakes!

Sizes 6 and 8?!? WOW!! You ladies are doing awesome! I dream of being in that size…but it hasn’t happened yet. I can squeeze myself into a 12, 10 if I don’t breathe! 500-1000 crunches!!!? Carla, girl, you are awesome. I do 50 a day and I am usually about half dead when I finish :)

Yes, the wild is just gone. We have a deer pretty much living in our backyard now, rabbitts everywhere. But i better not ever, and I do mean EVER, see no slimmy creepy crawly little snake! Deirdre, you are so brave to kill it! I would have went screamin’ for the hills.

Hi Wanda! I have tried the at home cheddar biscuits but they are never as good. Maybe I am doing it wrong? Lord knows I am not the best cook in the world.

She brought me a turtle once…the shell was all scratched where she had tried to get into it. I think she brought it to me so I could open it up for her. i put the poor thing on the other side of the fence. Probably didn’t poke it’s head out of the shell for a week!

myst…hubby says the reason things are better at the restaurant is ‘cuz he didn’t have to prepare it or cook it himself… so maybe it’s just your self-critique vs. being able to relax and just enjoy the food, laughing… sounds good, anyway!

By shay

August 9, 2006 3:19 PM | Link to this

Mystique, LOL!!! I was a size 6 when idol started and then I started eating out of depression because I had to watch Chicken Little week after week. Then when I went to Jamaica two months ago, I think I ate wayyyy to much. So in the end, I had gained 10 pounds which put me up a size.

Deirdre that is too funny! I must see a pic of your dog. That poor turtle was probably scared out of his/her shell!!!

I have a MILLION Maggie stories…she’s a pistol! I owe the 22 year old a new pair of sandals cuz Maggie ate his! If she didn’t have the sweetest nature, I would have strangled her by now!

By Jex

August 9, 2006 3:25 PM | Link to this

I guess Carla has to go so she can get started on the ten thousand crunches. I wish I would. My body would be like, WTF?

By shay

August 9, 2006 3:28 PM | Link to this

Mine too Jex. I can do about 100 a day and it takes forever. But 1000? I don’t have time to do 1000 crunches, nor do I have the energy. My two year old takes that as an opportunity to sit on my stomach. Now how can I do crunches with 30 pounds of baby sitting on me! He just don’t understand. He thinks it’s some sort of game.

By Deirdre

August 9, 2006 3:30 PM | Link to this

I gave up crunches about 10 years ago and haven’t regretted it for a minute….except when I look in the mirror!

LOL Shay. I know what you mean, I could have downed a whole carton of Brownie Batter ice cream during my Chris-got- voted-off-WAY-TOO-early depression!

Linny I think your hubby is on to something there! Food is better when someone else does all the cooking, cleaning, and serving!

Deirdre, I am all too familiar with those crunches! That is why the other type of crunches don’t seem to be helping much :-)
