8/7: Taylor Q&A
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I forgot to post a transcription of my interview (along with Alice, another journalist) with Taylor at Gwinnett Arena last Thursday. Here it is:
AJC: How are things going on the tour so far
Taylor: I’m in a pretty good zone. From minivan to tour bus. It’s not a bad lifestyle.
Alice: Are you sick of all those Ford ads?
Taylor: That was one fo those things that was dealt with that show. I’m very fortunate to be in the position I am. I was looking for a harmonica sponsorshipo about a year ago. Now I’ve got Ford, one of three largest auto manufacturers in the world. I’m not complaining. As a budding artist looking for any exposure that you can possiblyi get, it’s not such a bad thing to see your face for awhile.”
AJC: I hear Brooke, your high school prom date, is coming tonight.
Taylor: Cool. That’s great man. I hope all the best. She’s a great person.
AJC: How’s Kat holding up?
Taylor: Those things happen. [She tripped and fractured her foot at the Charlotte concert 7/31]. The stage and stuff like that, it’s one of the bigger productions in music. There’s a lot of stuff sitting around.
AJC: Have you fallen before?
Taylor: Everybody has taken a spill.
AJC: Did you ever get hurt?
Taylor: I have had some knee problems before. Just as much moving around we do. Being a perfomer that’s performed for a long time. Having to move the equipment you play on. I was hauling amplifiers for 10 years with the bands I’ve had. It’s a pretty physical gig anyway.
AJC: How are you keeping your energy up?
Taylor: I’m playing basketball. I’m running a little bit. I’m trying to eat right, keep the carbs away. I did go to Chick Fil-A for lunch.
AJC: Will you be able to make it to the afterparty with the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra tonight.
Taylor: I don’t really know. I know we have a long bus ride tonight. [I checked with the tour manager and he said they had to pull out no later than midnight so there was no way he could make it.] I’ve been fortunate to have had some opportunities for all of us to get out. It was fun to see those guys [at the afterparty in Charlotte]. I hope to see them again.
AJC: Will you have time to see your Auburn buddies?
Taylor: Probably a few, I’ll be able to see afterwards.
AJC: How’s the album going?
Taylor: I’m still in the collection phase and the writing phase and stage of this project. There will be some music I’ve written and some I haven’t written. You know, if you had asked Ray Charles his thoughts about writing songs, the mentality is still the same. A song is a song. A good song is a good song. It doesn’t matter. I’ve been fortunate to write with some great writers. I’ll be writing on the road.
AJC: How have you adjusted to singing fewer songs since Kat came back?
Taylor: I had to cut some musc. But less is more at this point on this tour. I want to save it for my solo tour and my album.
