8/5: Thoughts on the concert
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here’s a more coherent summary of my thoughts of how each performer did Thursday night at the “Idols Live!” concert:
Mandisa: Her vocals, bizarrely, were sometimes swallowed up by the band, which makes me think a bad sound mix. Otherwise, she was charming. Ruben — give her a call!
Ace: He’s all cheese but if you’re into it, it’s palatable for a couple of songs. And yes, that fake heartbeat on the big screen amped up the ugh factor as he began “Father Figure.”
Lisa: Better than expected, esp. when she was at her keyboard doing Elton John. Still, she isn’t quite ready for primetime and needs serious seasoning.
Paris: She showed her charm and her dance skills though during “Crazy in Love,” she still strikes me as too young looking to pull of Beyonce convincingly.
Bucky: He doesn’t quite have the pipes for an arena but shows he can have fun on stage.
Kellie: We missed ya!
Chris: He did his thang, as Paula might say. By strength of vocals and charisma, he knows he will be a star for many years to come as long as he stays true to himself and doesn’t let arrogance swallow him whole.
Elliott: The most disappointing of the night. He wasn’t consistent vocally and looked a bit sloppy as well.
Kat: Given her vocal problems and fractured foot, she’d have to be graded on a curve. Considering her circumstances, she was the picture of grace.
Taylor: He didn’t appear to veer from script but rocked the house top to bottom.
