8/5: Interviewed by Us magazine

Us magazine is doing a story about Kat McPhee and a reporter just called me for a quote. The guy, Ian Drew, admitted not being a big Idol fan and based on his line of questioning, it’s probably going to be some panicky story. A colleague of mine predicted the overly dramatic headline to be something like “Is Kat’s Life Spiraling Out of Control?” He asked me if this might hurt her career or her album sales. I hedged, knowing that hedging is not a good thing to feed a reporter, saying there’s no way to know for sure. Then I said it certainly doesn’t help, that missing 18 concerts (even if it was out of her control) meant tens of thousands of would-be or borderline fans she could have won over didn’t see her. I said she was received warmly, though not as warmly as Taylor or Chris. I also said it’s virtually guaranteed Taylor’s first album will outsell Kat’s, based on current singles sales. (He has sold more than three times as many CDs of his “Do I Make You Proud”/”Takin’ It to the Streets” and twice as many downloads as kat.)

It’ll be interesting how he places my quote and in what context. Should I be scared? :)

8/4: Book deal for Taylor

Fantasia wrote (or at least narrated) a memoir last year, “Life is Not a Fairy Tale,” which I heard did pretty well — at least better than Simon Cowell’s book.

Now it’s Taylor’s turn. People.com reports that he’ll have a memoir out next year and was paid a lovely $750,000 advance. That’s a nice chunk of change! It is set to be ghost-written by well-known Rolling Stone writer David Wild. They even have a working title, “Heart Full of Soul.”

8/4: Clay’s cover-heavy album

The folks at USA Today’s Idol Chatter procured a press release with Clay’s new album song listing, out Sept. 19. Of the 14 songs, 10 are covers. Does it make sense at this point in Clay’s career to focus on schmaltzy covers rather than do more original music so he can establish himself as an artist?

Here’s the track listing, in handy alphabetical order:

A Thousand Days (new song)

Because You Loved Me (Celine Dion)

Broken Wings (Mr. Mister, original artist)

Every Time You Go Away (originally Hall & Oates, hit by Paul Young)

Everything I Do (I Do It for You) (Bryan Adams)

Everything I Have (new song)

Here You Come Again (Dolly Parton)

I Want to Know What Love Is (Foreigner)

Lonely No More (new song, co-written by Clay)

Right Here Waiting (Richard Marx)

Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word (Elton John)

These Open Arms (new song, co-written by Jon Bon Jovi)

When I See You Smile (Bad English)

Without You (originally Badfinger, hit by Nilsson)
