50 years later: How influential was “Kind of Blue”?

I bought Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” a decade ago after a friend suggested my CD collection wouldn’t be complete without this gem.
He was right. I was hooked a minute into “So What”.

Buddy Holly: The day the music died

Fifty years ago today, a plane crash ended the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the “Big Bopper”, J.P. Richardson.
It was the day, as the popular song “American Pie” proclaimed, that “the music died.”

Share your Good Samaritan stories

Who says Good Samaritans don’t exist?
Certainly not Miki Cooper, a resident of Naples, Fla., who recently left a bag full of valuables on the floor of a metro cab.
The bag, which contained diamond jewelry, an iPod and a digital camera, was discovered by driver Walter Fernandez who quickly tried to find its owner. He remembered the passenger and contacted the hotel. At the same time, Cooper was trying desperately to locate the cabbie known as Walter and finally got his home address. The bag was reunited with its owner and Fernandez was rewarded with $200.

Let’s skip Valentine’s Day

Fellas, have you grown tired of that ridiculous annual Valentine’s Day two-step? Then skip it. Avoid giving in to all the, as one colleague called it, “socially-mandated emotion.” Take back the second Saturday of this month to enjoy NBA All-Star Weekend. Staff writer Marcus K. Garner advises lovebirds to forget all the hoopla over Valentine’s Day and show your love in other ways throughout the year. Who’s with him?

What was your favorite/least favorite Super Bowl ad?

If you enjoy watching men tossed out a window, struck by a bus, hit by a golf club, tackled by a football player or laid low by a snow globe to the crotch, then this year’s Super Bowl was for you, the New York Times said of last night’s ads. Otherwise, the Times, said, it all was a little predictable. What was your favorite? Least favorite? Notice any trend?
