Are you ready for digital TV?

President-elect Barack Obama wants to delay the Feb. 17 switch from analog to digital television broadcasting because too many people won’t be ready.

On that date, all television signals are scheduled to transfer from analog to digital. If you don’t have cable or satellite, you won’t be able to pick up a signal without a converter box.

Ready for the switch or should it be delayed? Are you having trouble understanding what the switch actually means and how it affects you?

(Editor’s note: The deadline was extended until mid-June because Obama administration officials believed millions of Americans were unprepared for the switch.)

Oh please. Delay? Why? We could use the revenue for selling the extra-bandwidth by making the switch…I’ve been ready for years.

I suppose the converter boxes being given away and/or discounted by the government are made in the US?

If they were it would have been a nice way to keep American’s working with US tax dollars.

If people aren’t ready after the deluge of commercials and updates over the past TWO YEARS then another few months isn’t going to help.

Obama’s just pandering for more voted four years for now. “I worked tirelessly to make sure that poor, rural and elderly people had the RIGHT to quality TV.”

You have got to be kidding me! If this is any indication of what it’s going to be like for the next four to eight years, God help us.

The poor, rural and elderly have had ample opportunity to save the money to purchase the box (I did). If my 80 year old father with an 8th grade education can handle a cell phone, anyone can handle this “leap” in technology.

The dumbing and victimization of the oppressed masses in America continues…

The people who are not ready for digital never will be.

Doesn’t Obama have something better to do than to pander to very small percentage of the public who are whining?

If they have a problem with it…get cable, satellite, rent videos or hey…turn the TV off and go outside for a change.

Yeah, I think they can.

I was gainfully employed for the last 7 years, 11 months. Customers I’ve called on the past 9 months held off on capital equipment purchases until the election was over because, and I quote one owner, “we’re waiting to find out if we’re going to be a 50 person company or a 25 person company.” Well, they (and others) became a “25 person company.” As a result, my employer began slashing jobs. First time in my 49 years I’ve been on unemployment (kind of like going after my own personal piece of the bailout pie). So yeah, it can be worse.

I was working during the Carter years. Really, really bad. You thought the gas shortages were bad this last year? Interest rates and inflation were through the roof. Unemployment was horrendous.

I’ll be fine, I’ve been there before. Question is, will you and your friends come out okay?

By the way, I have my converter boxes. With all the cost cutting measures, cable with be the first thing to go.

And if they are THAT poor, get out and do something to earn that $40 needed to buy that box. Can’t they go build a bridge, President Obama? Oh, And they’ve had two years to do it. COME ON! Whoever said that switching over to the converter box was easy needs to try it himself! I’m still trying to get the system to recognize all the stations it should - after three tries! And hooking all those things up? Someone should consider who is most likely to be using bunny ears and figure out a way to make it more user-friendly. It’s not that I think it’s a bad idea, I just don’t think the implementation has been good. In addition to being frustrated with the installation, it also irritates me that I had to pay $20 for each box, even with the coupon. Again, someone should acknowledge that the people who will be affected could very well need more help than just a coupon.

Well now there is an official delay. Big freaking surprise. It’s ok we get to hear even more commercials for the next 4 months. I was ready for those to be gone. Too bad for the TV companies/cable companies who spent millions, I’m sure, advertising the switch. They don’t matter but the people who couldn’t get it together after a few years need a few more months like that’s going to make a difference. Yeah big government knows best. Yikes these next 4 years keep looking better.

This is nuts. In June, they’ll once again say the people aren’t ready and try to push it back again. It’s already been delayed almost 10 years. There is never going to be a day when everyone is ready because there will also be somebody who’ll refuse. Should a small number of people be allowed to dictate to the rest of us? No.

If you can’t or won’t update your TV or get a box, then lose the TV and read a book or something, or go for a walk. TV is not your God. Stop praying to it every day when Oprah or Wheel comes on.

We’ve been told about this for months now and with the coupons issued (which was a crock as well) the cost is $10.00 for the digital box and about $15.00 for an antenna. Most of the same people who say that they can’t afford that are the same ones with the cell phones, ipods and every other gadget available.

First of all, the FCC ruined it when they gave in and let broadcasters split what was supposed to be true high definition tv into separate streams to increase revenue and killing most of the incentive for people to switch.

Sure a lot is in High Def, but a lot is just gussied up standard def programming in a different sized box.

As for the delay, the same 5 percent who is not ready now will STILL not be ready this June, or next June, or the one after that. They will have to see the screen go to snow before they do anything. Just like taxes, some people are ALWAYS going to pay on April 15, no matter what.

I say GOOD. Because as a DTV Converter box holder, maybe this will give the stations the time to get off their asses and provide a big enough signal to the rest of the covering areas to make it worth while. As it stands, the coverage sucks and is absolutely worthless! . I don’t think for one second its the public who haven’t gotten their crap together in the last three years, its the stations who have no freaking clue that their signal doesn’t reach but 20 miles away from the station antennae. And at least with analog when it was fuzzy, it was still watchable. With the new DTV conversion, its useless when the wind blows, it rains, is cloudy, a bird dumps, my cat farts… etc If they want it to be for better Emergency Broadcasting, its going to be pointless if you can’t see it in the RAIN or WIND.

It is amazing to me that people would complain about such a minor and unimportant delay.

How does this hurt you? Seriously!

It is patently unfair to make the late adopters, who are often also the most economically (and technically) challenged, pay full price for a converter box because that program ran out of money.

TV is a way not only to be entertained, but to stay in touch with the world and get vital information — like when the next ice storm is going to hit.

Depriving anyone from this knowingly without having done due diligence (which we have not) is close to criminal.
If people died because they lost their TV … would you then stop your needless and pointless complaining?

As far as the conversion, I did it. This is a little more technical than most people realize. There is a serious learning curve. And what about those extra new antennas you need besides the converter box?

Heck, I am an electrical engineer (seriously) and I thought it was a bit of a bear even for me!

So it is not a no-brainer. Be kind to your fellow watchers, especially those who are challenged.

Please, stop the whining. If you want digital actually most people already can receive the signal. And if not, get cable or satellite.

You all obviously have money enough to have internet access, eh?

This is just going to confuse everyone now. This bill just says that stations don’t have to have a digital signal until June. The FCC says that 61% of the stations are going to switch on Feb. 17-18 anyways, so you are going to have markets where half the stations will switch and the other half won’t.

This is just political posturing, the bill doesn’t provide more money or boxes for people who still don’t have one.

If you are posting on this board you have access to and know how to use a computer. It’s the 2 people who do not have computer access are not ready. The digital conversion is a government sham to begin with. Each piddley tv station across the country had to spend upward of $20 million dollars to upgrade its equipment to digital. Then every American had to buy the convert box or a new tv that costs about $1000. Like someone else said, if all of this equipment was made in America…Instead it is mostly made in Japan. Now who do you think is the great beneficiary of dtv, you with the ability to see Monica’s new outfit perfectly or the Japanese who took billions of American dollars.

Anyone watching tv over the past year, rich or poor, has seen the ads and warnings. Give me a break. Of course, if there are those that can’t afford to make the “switch”, I am sure the dem’s in congress can add the cost to the trillion $ spending spree!

The only people unprepared for this are people who don’t want to be prepared. Even my inlaws, who I thought would be the last people in the world to do anything, went to an inexpensive satellite setup. If people are so lazy that they haven’t taken the initiative to do anything by now, they don’t deserve to have a television. It is their fault and only their fault. I guess that come June we will have to reward those who are sorry again.

I think it’s ridiculous to be postponed. We were told about this about 2 years ago and if people haven’t prepared themselves for it by now, their not going to.

DTV doesn’t have to be flat-screen, expensive or even new. My Mom’s brand new digital TV cost $150 (not HD), and the old TV on my porch has the converter that cost me $10… after the coupon I sent away for LAST SUMMER!

The problem is not ‘hate’ or wanting folks to miss out on their precious American Idol drama… it’s the endless pandering to the helpless lame-asses who just WON’T PAY ATTENTION. They won’t realize what’s going on till they turn on their TV on June 13 and see nothing. This ain’t brain surgery, folks.

Who cares? The Obama administration, oops I mean “train wreck” has already caused chaos. The nation is less safe against terror, the government has grown, we have appointed “tax evaders” (no wonder they have no problem increasing taxes…they don’t pay), and there is the stimulus package funded by foreign governments and paper money! Heck, I can stimulate the economy if I didn’t need to pay my debts too! This is small time folks.

There are many problems with the digital converter boxes and the transition you are not being told about.

  1. You get the coupons use them and then find out the units will not work with your TV. Seeing you purchased the units you get a refund for the amount over the coupons but you don’t get the coupon back.
  2. You need a converter box for other items associated with your TV such as recorders.
  3. Most converter boxes remote controls are not compatible with your TV so you need at least two remotes to change channel mainly because the volume has to be adjusted.
  4. There is only a 90 day warranty on the converter. Then what?
  5. Signal strength of digital is not as strong as analog so you may need to invest upwards of $100 for a new antenna.
  6. Most converters do not have analog pass thru so once you switch you will not be able to get the stations still broadcasting in analog.
  7. If you have a recording device you will not be able to use the preprogramming feature because it will not change the channel on your converter box.

There are probably a lot more problems I haven’t noticed yet. I think buying a new TV is a better answer than a converter box. I wish the feds had thought of this and allowed the use on either a converter box or a new TV.
