Michelle Obama: Red dress blues?

Now Michelle Obama has gone and done it: Tuesday night she went all mavericky on us.

And by mavericky we mean she blew off wearing the staid matched suit of First Spousehood in favor of a red-and-black patterned sheath (below right) by Narciso Rodriguez.

We heard a couple of complaints Wednesday morning in the AJC newsroom that the dress didn’t go over well with TV viewers last night. Nor did it win precious points with the Los Angeles Times, whose blogger proclaimed it “disasterous.”

Our colleagues apparently disagree, but over here in our little fashion corner, we thought — well, the black-and-red combination was a little jarring at first, but it seemed to suit Michelle Obama’s personality, she seemed comfy in it, and darned if the color-coordinated First Family-Elect didn’t look adorable from the stage. (If photos from the 2008 Democratic National Convention are any indication, color-coordinated Obamas are a habit.)

By comparison, other female fashion moments of Tuesday night included Cindy McCain (matched suit with bracelet-length sleeves), Gov. Sarah Palin (matched suit with bracelet-length sleeves), and Jill Biden (matched suit with long sleeves).

We like that M.O. ditched the stodgy suit in favor of a dress and bolero — if that’s how she’s more comfortable. Plus, she looked original (Right: speaking of original, here’s the designer original on the runway). Plus, her choice got everybody talking — again, remember that turquoise jersey dress that started people buzzing?

What’s your opinion of the dress: hip or homely?

Striking dress for the Christmas party or the Academy Awards. Definitely wrong for the First Lady elect’s first impression. Jackie O set a high standard but she earned great respect for her choices while representing the United States.

Michelle Obama (‘perhaps’!?…meant well ‘trying’ to tie a family all together in the same colors, but she looked like a sashed Dracula would have dressed!?
It was rather ‘morbid’ & not very celebratory at all! What is it with her & her clothes? It tended to draw so many viewers eyes away from her husband’s victory on that stage. It was garrish!
One wonders if she was trying to make some kind of odd statement to be noticed too! Glad to hear others ‘annoyed’ by the dress too….tasteless…yuck!

a bad first choice for obama the dress did not look like the runway’s model at all she should have stuck to the classic look she had already established

The dress was hideous and looking at a model wearing the same dress, just makes it look even worse. No taste.

What a horror. Every event she stands with her legs apart (in a dress) like a truck driver. Looks like a man in the face. Ugly, tranny, no sense of style on the red dress…I laughed out loud….Halloween still — where was her witch hat and pointy shoes? She’ll probably lick her knife at State Dinners….

Really sad to see some of these comments. NC_Fashionista, your personal attacks are unfair and reveal more about who you are than you may wish others to know.

I am not a fan of the dress. There was some weird effect with the fade from red to black that was not flattering. I do like that she didn’t feel compelled to wear what was expected.

I think that Michelle Obama looked Beautiful as normal!! I agree w/ DEJA Vu… People lets talk about something else. Who cares about her dress, she the First Lady now!!!! She could wear a robe and still be memorable. Congratulations again Mr. & Mrs. Obama

Loved it! It is time first ladies got away from the style set by Nancy Reagan in the 80’s. Does anyone remember that purple knit suit Laura Bush wore a few years ago? Not only did it look better suited to her MIL, but it made her look fat. Time to shake up Washington D.C.’s idea of fashion.
