Looking for something to do in these post-election days? Let’s take a look at some of the top events coming to Atlanta today, this weekend and in the coming weeks.
Coldplay’s expansive rock is arena-sized, and it needs a space as big as the band’s soaring choruses. And it gives frontman Chris Martin the space he needs for his manic performances, rocking on his piano stool like a man possessed, skipping giddily across the stage, crouching tigerlike atop cabinets at either side of the stage, running through the audience. At the band’s last Philips Arena appearance in 2005, he was like a rambunctious puppy. This year, Martin and his bandmates added a fourth album to their catalog. Entertainment Weekly proclaimed “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends” the band’s best album and the single “Viva La Vida” became the Brit quartet’s first U.S. No. 1. Tickets are still available for tonight’s show (Nov. 5), but the Nov. 11 date is sold out. 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5; 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11. $49.50-$97.50. Philips Arena, 1 Philips Drive N.W., Atlanta. 404-878-3000.
Hi-Rez Studios, an independent video game developer based in Alpharetta, will preview what it calls “our Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG).” It’s called “Global Agenda,” and it’s just one of the many activities that will take place during “Mission: Pwning for a Cure” at the Computer Arena in Roswell between noon and 5 p.m. Nov. 8. The event is aimed toward the gaming enthusiast, and will include seminars on video game development, game playing, a silent auction, raffle, prizes, music and food. All-access admission into the event is free to the public, but it’s also a benefit for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, so donations are encouraged. The Computer Arena is located at 10895 Alpharetta Highway in Roswell. 770-910-7951.
If you don’t think you like jazz, you should give the Brad Mehldau Trio a listen. The word jazz seems inadequate in describing the work of this bold, questing pianist, who has crafted remarkable re-imaginings of Radiohead, Thelonius Monk and Nick Drake. 8:15 p.m. Nov. 14. $40. Spivey Hall, 2000 Clayton State Blvd., Morrow. 678-466-4200.
