Beauty on a budget

There’s an old saying that it hurts to be beautiful.

That doesn’t mean, though, that beauty has to be a pain to your wallet, especially in this tough economic times.

Do you shop drug stores instead of department stores for cosmetics? Do you make your own beauty treatments? Have you reduced the number of visits to your hair salon and instead do it yourself?

The Associated Press recently pulled together these inexpensive beauty tips:

Slice a cucumber and place slices over your eyes to treat puffiness.

Shop at drug stores for cheaper eyeshadow and foundation.

What about you? How do you stay fine fine on a budget?

I’m letting my hair go darker- not any many trips needed for highlights then- they are expensive!

It saves me about $100 every 3-4 months

I usually purchase my cosmetics at CVS or Walgreens. I just cannot afford to pay $20 or more for lipliner or a lipstick color. I am guilty of getting my nails done..$40 every 2 week can be costly..really no way around that one besides eliminating the nail shop trips

I’ve given up the expensive beauty items and gone back to basics. Head & Shoulders for hair. Cold cream to remove makeup and Neutrogena products to cleanse, tone and moisturize. I’ve also cut my twice monthly salon visits to once every six weeks and do my own mani/pedi’s.

I relax my own hair, perform my own manicures and pedicures every two weeks.I use natural products like honey, lemon, sugar to perform facials and body scrubs once a month. All in the comfort of my home. I treat myself better than any salon employee ever would.

Get rid of the fake eyelashes, the fake color hair, the fake nails, the fake boobs, etc. and you will be way more beautiful!!!

Everytime my wife gets her nails done (a $40 expense), I make her put the same amount into a savings account. Same with her hair appointments. Whatever she spends on fake stuff the same amount has to go into savings.

Boy did it wake her up. She is way more beautiful to me now that she has stopped all that madness. However, we have a great savings account and it has paid for a weekend trip or two.

I love that woman the way god created her. I fell in love with her, not her fake nails or the rest of that garbage.

Like Heather, I went back to my natural hair color and stopped getting highlights. My hair feels and looks healthier now. I very rarely get manicures, but I do like to treat myself to a spa pedicure about once a month during spring and summer months. However, if my budget does not allow, I do my own pedicures.

I still go to the salon for my hair, but I save by putting a rinse (color) or deep conditioner on my hair the night before and I save on the extras when I go to the salon. I let the fake nails go a while back. Ocassionally I get a mani& pedi during the spring and summer. I still purchase MAC makeup products by that’s not very often, and MAC has a great recycling program for free lip stick. There are somethings I won’t give up unless I absolutely have too.

Avon has a nice make up line that is not too expensive. Also, I am learning to do as much as I can myself without having to pay anyone else.

Our family never had to pay for hair care growing up because my mom was a cosmetologist. After I left home, not only did I already have knowledge that helped me to care for my own, I found it very difficult to find someone who could do as good a job as my mom used to on hair cuts, body waves, color, etc.

I have long relied on the local beauty schools to get my periodic maintenance that I can’t do myself, such as haircuts and permanents. Not only is the cost MUCH lower, but the students are very conscientious, supervised and typically do a better job than someone who “knows everything.” Besides, it’s just hair … it will grow back.

I also use henna to color my own hair. It’s natural and only a couple a bucks for a box of it at the farmer’s market. It usually does at least two or three applications. Note of caution though: the henna color is not for everyone.
