How real an Atlanta housewife are you?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Bravo, the channel that gave us “Project Runway,” has a new show debuting Tuesday: “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” a soapy “reality” (cough, cough) series about five very well-off women who live in the northern suburbs.
One lives in a country club and is married to an NFL player, one lives in a country club and is trying to launch a career as a singer … you get the idea.
These shows are all in fun, but we thought it would also be fun to gather a group of REAL real housewives of Atlanta for a viewing party to react to “The Real Housewives.”
We’re looking for housewives, stay-at-home moms, call ‘em what you will, from all income brackets, of all races, from all geographic points in the metro area.
We want to know: What makes you a real housewife?
Make sure you use a real email address! I will contact some submitters and arrange for the viewing party.

I am a real housewife of Atlanta. I am a motjer of 2. A 12 year old daughter and a 9 month old son. I work from home as a Performance measurement analyst for a company based out of Chicago and Houston. Not only do I take care of the kids, I cook, clean house, help with home work, and make sure my man is taken care of also. My work is never done, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Especially the part working from home!

Those women are the most awful representation of the housewives of Atlanta. Not only are the majority of them only one race, but they most certinaly do NOT embodie the hard working mothers and wives that really live and play in Atlanta.
I hope that no one watches that show and that it gets cancelled before it starts. And I truly hope that those women are ashamed of the bad name they bring to the REAL housewives of Atlanta.

I’m glad that I’m not the only one who thought that this group of women were a hot mess. I’m black and have never been so embarrassed by what I saw on the preview. They are ghetto, hoochie dressing gold-diggers. On top of that, two of them are not wives at all. One is trying to suck money from her ex to keep up whatever lifestyle she thinks that she has and the other one is a hooker. I would never be able to have any of these women attend one of my parties. My friends would think that I’ve gone mad.

The other “Real Housewives” didn’t even begin to throw a token minority in. They were all white or white-ish. Nothing wrong with this cast being mostly black. People watching don’t really want to watch some average, country, drawlin’ belle…they want to watch someone who appeals to a wider audience than exists in old dixie.
Why would a reality TV show embarrass you Cara? I’m sure you can find characterics of your real girlfriends in all of those women on the show. This is entertainment. If you’re not entertained you don’t have to watch.

Oh hell, this is purely about ENTERTAIN-MENT!!! A reality TV show would not feature any of you boring, plain, grainy & basically no personality types. Reality TV is posh, shocking, funny, twisted, juicy, decadent, periwinkle, lavish… get the point? The housewife’s of Atlanta are absolutely great!! I guess I’m an Atlanta housewife; worth value in the millions from both of our businesses combined. Young children NO NANNY! We just know when to work and WHEN to LAUGH and how live without… judging others!!!

I personally don’t care if the ATL “housewives” are black, white or brown. What they are is an insult to all of us who work (part-time/full-time), are raising kids, clean our own homes and generally keep our households running smoothly while still trying to find time for fun. These “ladies” are nothing but gold diggers who wouldn’t know how to survive on a middle class income. Why should we watch them embarrass the rest of us and the Atlanta area? I hope this show crashes and burns a fiery death.

I am a stay-at-home mom/housewife and the only thing I have in common with some of the ones on the show is that I live in Duluth. I saw a preview and I could not believe they are calling these women “housewives”. How about calling the show “The real pampered and kept women of Atlanta” instead, because that is what they are.

I watched the 30min preview on the Oxygen channel. As an black woman I was appauled! I don’t even have the energy to type all the negative sterotypes that the show feed into. One of the things that stood out is the fact that these new money women have no ideal that one of the oldest rules to the wealth game is YOU DON’T TALK ABOUT MONEY! When you are constantly talking about how much something cost, you immediately telling the person you are conversating with that you are new money and have no class.

**This show makes Atlanta the laughing stock of the country. These women, whether all black or all white, are not even native Atlantans or Southerners and they are all new money, trashy types. No one with integrity acts like these women or flashes money around like these women. I would love to hear from the people who know them to hear what they are really like. I would never ask any of them to one of my parties because they are attention starved and obnoxious.
I am a real housewife of Atlanta. I am the mother of three kids from high school to college. I have a nice house, a great family, wonderful friends and I volunteer a lot in my community as well as work a part time job. A show about how real moms handle their schedules and their active children’s schedules mixed in with their husband’s travel schedules would be much more interesting than watching a bunch of hoochy mommas blowing money on designer duds and expensive vehicles. These women are so insecure with themselves that they resort to throwing money around, being extremely loud and rude and bragging that they are “high class.” What a joke! Takes more than money and clothes to be high class. If you can put on a suit from Target and address a room full of people about a topic that is near and dear to your heart without raising your voice or flashing your boobs….then you have class. Otherwise, sit down.
They will probably all be in foreclosure by the end of the tv series anyway.**

This is a joke. No woman of means would allow such a thing. This show is about people borm of no means; void of a pedigree or any social standing who would allow themselves to be edited and displayed in such a way to garner ratings for a television program. These women are tasteless, bad new money types that are too dumb and too shallow to realize they’re being laughed at. If you tried to tell them what a joke they are, they’d call you jealous.

My sister is a real HOUSEWIFE. She is a firefighter and her husband is a Police Officer (both within the city limits). She is also the mother of two beautiful boys, ages 3 and a year and a half. When her youngest son was born, she dealt with his illness (3 surgeries by the time he was 6 months old) and her husband’s back and neck injuries (which kept him out of work for 6 moths), all while continuing to work. Sh is currently in nursing school, still working as a firefighter, cooking and cleaning the house, taking cae of three ownderful men, and she is the coach of the three year old’s soccer team. Now if that is not a real HOUSEWIFE, then I don’t know what one is. She is THE GREATEST!

i find the show to be bad reality television but plan on catching bits and pieces of it just the same…
however…i do believe that some bloggers will take issue with the fact that the cast members are african american and immediately be unable to relate and degrade the show…
to those who do and most of you that have posted in response to this topic, i say…just because you don’t personally know people like this in atlanta - it doesn’t mean that these type of people don’t live in atlanta…it’s just that most of them aren’t putting their lives and dirty little secrets and attitudes of entitlement on television for the entertainment of the masses in return for a little bit of money…

Being a Real Housewife, my duties consist of cooking, cleaning, playing taxi for my son and his friends and being a carrier for my husband when he has forgotten something. I am the mother of 4 children the oldest 3 live outside of the home. My baby is 15 years old plays football and runs track so therefore I am at every football practice, every football game, every track practice, every track meet from start to finish. If other parents don’t show up I am taxi for their children to give them a ride home. I am Team Mom for the football team and the track team so for every bump, pain, hunger pain or anything else I am there for my child and the others. I have to tend to the needs of my husband and my children. I am on call 24-7 whether it is telling my daughters how to cook something or telling my husband directions as to how to get from one place to another. I am even working in my sleep. I have a complete meal ready in 45 minutes to and hour. I am Villa Rica, Ga’s most active housewife. Oh, I forgot to tell you, I am a doctor, a teacher, a mind reader, and everybody’s problem fixer.

I have to say that I am shocked and fascinated at the same time. I am a professional, well educated black woman who currently stays at home and cares for my family. I am in awe at the fact that these women have such low self esteem that they measure themselves by how much money they spend and/or their husbands titles. It makes me sad to know that women are trapped in such a warped reality. I am fascinated because I can not believe that there are men who accept that behaviour and actually are proud of their wives. Now not all of the women are bad on the show, but can some of them get a job, take up a cause or something. How about giving some of their fashion knowledge to dress for success. Something. I fear for the world that their children are going to enter into. Am I a real housewife? Yes, I am. I am a mother to three. I am PTA president, President of my HOA, and run my own business and partner with my husband in the care of the house and family. I get to see my children grow and have their bad days, I get to travel with my family and enjoy days when I clean my house and when i do not. I also get to spend lazy weekends with my husband enjoying his company. That is what makes me a housewife, then I am definitely it!

I think it’s funny that two of these women aren’t even wives and none of them live within the perimeter. Also, a ‘housewife’ is one who does not work outside the home. Just because you’re married with kids doesn’t make you a ‘housewife’. They should rename the show “Women from Duluth.”

OK, clearly some of us are confused as to exactly a housewife is. I would say that most women are taught at an early age what constiutes being a housewife. Now for those of the new generation that don’t quit get it, I took the liberty of researching this for you. Now before reading this, I have to say that any women that takes care of home (including the husband, smile), the children and all the joys of knowing that you ARE the Bankbone of the family - you are indeed a REAL HOUSEWFE. Ok, now with the definition - DO YOU CLASSIFY? Homemaker is a mainly American term which may refer either to:
the person within a family who is primarily concerned with the management of the household, whether or not he or she works outside the home
a person whose prime occupation is to care for their family and/or home

I watched it once, and was so irritated with the vacuous, self-absorbed participants that I never bothered with it again. The show I watched had a salesperson ooohing and aahing trying to sell a 3,800 purse that was soft “because it had been treated wth Botox — and it was a great deal!” Oh, gag.
One participant had her “entourage” that she simply could not live without — the hairdresser that comes to her home, the in-home spa where she and her pre-teens are manicured and pedicured, her “assistant” (she was so proud of the fact that her assistant was a “name” — Holyfield’s daughter, I think?
I think I would go beserk if the most important thing I had to think about was whether my $4K purse matched my tacky shoes.
I’m a housewife, married to the same wonderful guy for 26 years, work part-time and have two older teenagers who are smart, well-adjusted, work hard and have never caused a moment’s trouble with drugs, alcohol, staying out late, etc. My house may not have a spa and I may only see the hairdresser every 2 or 3 months, but I suspect that, overall, I’m probably a happier person that these bimbos will ever be.

There is definately hostility in the place-Most women will look at what is a housewife differently, so that’s why I posted the following: A housewife is…..
the person within a family who is primarily concerned with the management of the household, whether or not she works outside the home
a person whose prime occupation is to care for their family and/or home
Honestly, you don’t have to get anyone’s approval of what you consider to be a housewife, so if you post personal things about yourself, don’t get upset when all don’t agree. Some have it easy - some don’t. Life is to short to worry about others opinion of your situation.

Hi,
I am a fan of the Real Housewives of Orange County. I have watched every season. In fact, Vicki Gunvalson has inspired me to pursue the insurance industry even more! I want to add, The Real Housewives of Atlanta is show that’s supposed to be “over-the-top”. I believe we should give the show a chance because they do represent a certain population of Atlanta. I’m glad that this show is predominantly African-American because too many other shows do not showcase this ethnic group in America.
I do wish the show much success and I do hope to be casted for the show. I am a Real Housewife of Atlanta, I live in surburban NW Atlanta, East Cobb area and would like to showcase how I live for money too!—lol! I am married to a husband who doesn’t appreciate me but we have 3 wonderful, gifted and talented children. Everyone says that they all should be on tv! I would love to attend a viewing.

First issue at hand, Shree— that is not how real friends deal with REAL friends. You are not all that!! If that was your friend and she was not on your “guest list”, you should have dealt with that and made sure that she was included in your inter circle. Are you intimidated by her?? I love a real and down to earth woman, you is NOT that! It is not all about how much something cost, it is all about how you rock it. Get with the program, and ask those other so called friends of yours to follow.

a real housewife takes care of her OWN home and does not let another woman come in and handle Her busines as far as her man, kids, and friends. These are all to personal and should only be taken care of by oneself. Sheree is prending to have so much class and sofistication that she failed to review her guest list and make sure herself that the person’s that she invited personally was on the list. To me that is tacky and rude, it goes to show who she really is and that is FAKE and for the other people that are around her well they had better watch out because she’s stab you to she is not a friend to anyone not even herself.A housewife is always on her gain and never leaves her family and friends in the cold. She does everything she has to do in a day and looks forward to the next day with anticipation because this is something that she loves to do because she is the one in Control of her family and this is what makes her the MOM, the WIFE, The FRIEND> Remember this though Ladies: To thine on self be TRUE.

They call this show real/reality? What a joke! I am a true GA peach, born & raised, in Duluth for that matter, which is where several of these so-called ladies live. These are the most arrogant, materialistic, narcissistic women I have ever seen. Again, being born & raised here I’ve never come across people like this. If it weren’t for their rich husbands/boyfriends, these women wouldn’t have anything. Way to go Bravo, what a terrible depiction of the REAL Atlanta.

I watched the show with a real ATL housewife of stature and money who REALLY LIVES IN ATLANTA - we thought the show was hilariuos. We understood that the show was entertainment and nothing more. First, they are not all married (they are supposed to be house”wives”) and they didn’t live in the city limits. Duluth is Duluth NOT Atlanta. Its clear these women are enjoying a lifestyle of leisure and nothing more - that’s entertainment. We will watch each episode just like the other “Real” series - they give us an hour to indulge in someone else’s reality.

Wow. Did any of you watch the other series? If so, you will know this is not too far enough. Just the change in race. The formula is to find self involved women that believe the world centers around them. It’s so funny to watch because you find these type of women throughout the country. Also, what is even funnier is that these women fail to understand they are being used.

Please save these ladies from themselves. They cannot possibly represent Atlanta’s ‘black’ elite.
I was looking foward to show, but after second episode, refuse to watch any longer. These women are too caught-up in attempting to out do each other.
I want to see “TRUE” housewives. I do not have the privilege of having a cook, cleaning staff, etc. I live in middle-class neighborhood, by all means, would be classifed ‘football mom’. I’m up in the morning getting my children ready for school, I head into work for 8 hours, pick-up the children, head home to prepare dinner, assist children with homework, and still have energy to to keep the ‘umph’ in my 15 year marriage.
Who kept w** is the white girl. This is what Atlanta should reveal! Get real! These waer
