Name your favorite drummers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia teen Matt Smith has been named the world’s fastest drummer (click here for the story). The Rome resident, who wants to attend the Julliard music school and have his own jazz band, names some of the masters of jazz and rock as his favorites: Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, John Bonham. Who are your favorite drummers?

Liberty DeVitto-The heart and soul of Billy Joel. Just watch him for 5 minutes and you’ll see more passion and understanding of any song he’s playing….If you see Billy now you’ll notice the absence of Liberty’s playing, to me it’s a musical crime.

Keith Moon. Simply the best. When drummers sat behind the drums and played along with the songs along came Keith Moon and after his arrival drummers were never viewed the same. Moon played with reckless abandon. Simply awesome.

Neil Peart of Rush has always been my favorite. There are many other drummers who have more technical skills or more this or that. But Peart has just always been a pure pleasure to not only listen to but watch. I would say that the best drummer ever, in terms of skill was Buddy Rich. His drumming abilities were scary.

I can think of five drummers that merit attention. Bill Bruford of Yes, Neal Peart of Rush, Stewart Copeland of The Police, Keith Moon of The Who, and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. That just about sums it up.

Juan Pedro Gratitud is little known in this country but in Spain his percussion is famous for its explosive fervor. He creates everything from howitzer-like flourishes to rat-a-tats that are almost silent but your feel them in a special way.

Many of the worlds best are not mainstream drummers, but those who play speed and death metal. Many of you may disagree, but if you like what this guy is doing, check out Gene Hoglan or Sean Reinert. Dave lombardo from Slayer was at one time the fastest double bass player, but the new generation of death metal drummers, coupled with pedal technology have far surpassed what many thought possible. Although Neil Peart and John Bohnam were drum gods in there time,I believe the torch has been passed.

The three best drummers I have ever seen are:
Neil Peart of Rush Carl Palmer Buddy Rich (RIP)
They are amazing, each has their own degree of showmanship and the best thing is their innovation and technique are applied as master craftsmen. As a drummer myself, I never tire of their mssterful playing. By the way, this kid has a great future ahead of him….

Lots of good ones listed already, but here are two more.
Jeff Porcaro of Toto. If you like their music, chances are it’s as much because of the drums as anything else. (And even if you don’t care for them, it’s hard to deny how important his work was to their sound.) He also did drum work in studio sessions for a long list of other bands and artists.
Also Rick Allen of Def Leppard. Does with one arm what most aspiring drummers can’t manage with two!
Finally, my all-time favorite drummer: Animal! :)

In my opinion there are two or three drummers today that rank as being the best, but what constitutes being named the best. it’s all in the hands and feet and how the drummer interacts with not only the band but the crowd. with that said here are my favorites:
RAFAEL PENSADO- from the Brazilian band Mindflow.
JUKKA NEVALANAIAN - from the Finnish band Nightwish
MIKE PARK - from the Dannish band Mercenary

Mike Portnoy of the band Dream Theater. His coordination is uncanny, his technical precision is amazing, and his musical knowledge is very broad. He cn play as fast as anyone, or slow it down to fit the style of music he might play in one of his side projects. On top of that he writes, produces, and pretty much handles everything for the band. All while remaining a humble guy, a husband, and a father.

As a person whose parents actually bought him a Ludwig set at the age of 5 in the 70’s, I have a pretty good feel for drummers. John Bonham (fool in the rain shuffle) is really good. However, Will Calhoun of Living Colour is so much better that everyone else on this list its not funny. Alex Van Halen, is a great drummer who can really thump, is second.

I’ve been drumming since I got my first set back in 1966, when I was only 8 years old, and I’m still in a band to this day! My favorites are Buddy Rich (the greatest, no question), Elvin Jones, and Art Blakey, in jazz; and Keith Moon, John Bonham, and Ian Paice (Deep Purple) in rock. Yes, Neil Peart is great, but overrated. Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts are underrated. Drum machines suck, as do all artists who record with them instead of a real drummer.

John Bonham, Keith Moon and Ian Paice rock! Here are a few good ones nobody has mentioned: Tommy Aldridge (Black Oak Arkansas); Curly Smith (Jo Jo Gunne); Steve Pace (Atlanta’s own “Hydra”); Dave Holland (Trapeze); Don Brewer (Grand Funk); Simon Kirke (Free, Bad Company); Lee Kerslake (Uriah Heep); and Denny Carmisi (Montrose). Max Weinberg sucks. So does Phil Collins, Liberty DeVitto and Stewart Copeland.
