Did you feel the Illinois quake?

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Illinois Friday morning, and the rumbling was felt by people up to 450 miles away, including reports from Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and Des Moines, Iowa. There were no reports of serious injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey had recieved more than a dozen reports by 7:30 a.m. from metro Atlantans who felt the quake. Those reports came from Alpharetta, Suwanee, Cumming, Marietta, Canton, Lithia Springs, Hiram, Woodstock, Fayetteville, Gainesville, Buford and Atlanta. The quake was also felt in extreme North Georgia in Ringgold and Dawsonville, according to the USGS.

Did you feel the quake? If so, tell us about it.

I didn’t feel it, but my wife and I awoke to an unidentified rattling coming from behind our dresser. I didn’t think anything of it until I got to work and realized it happened right at the time of the quake. This was in NE Cobb, just below the Cherokee line.

Our headboard was definitely banging against the wall this morning - I told Darius he’s going to have to fix the drywall tomorrow - the earth definitely moved under my feet. Oh, and by the way - I felt the earthquake, too!

My 12 year old blind dog (who is usually still deep asleep when I get up) was standing on all fours with his ears up and tail pointed straight out when I got out of bed this morning around that time. I didn’t feel anything but I know my dog sensed it. We live in the city of Decatur.

No rumblings felt in South GA (Albany area).

I was lying in bed this morning and felt my house shake. It was like having a giant walk through the second floor — boom..boom…boom…boom. At the time, I wondered how my husband or adult son could walk so heavily that they made the house shake!

I had just poured myself a fresh cup of joe and had sat down to my computer when the rumble began. I grabbed my cup as to ensure that it would be there when I needed it the most. Having never gone through an earthquake before I recognized it right away and began to cry out in shouts that were heard throughout my village (Clarkston). The people were all coming out onto the lawns to group together and hug. We needed each other to get through such an event. I noticed that the quake had caused some of the grass clipping to shift and were turned upside down. We cried out in anguish, WHY? WHY Clarkston? It was around this time that I had noticed what it seemed everyone else had noticed. In my hast to put my arms around my “hood” I had forgotten to put something around my “manhood”. Yup, no undies! Elvis said it best ” hey, hey I’m all shook up” To be honest I didn’t feel a thing!

I woke up in the middle of the night and the house was vibrating. A couple of metal and glass objects in my bedroom rattle when the washing machine is unbalanced, and they did the same thing last night. It lasted about 30 seconds! I was joking when I asked my father if we had an earthquake in the middle of the night. He immediately responded “They did in the midwest, did YOU feel it?”. We may not be in one of the recognized earthquake zones, but don’t delay..call your Insurance company today and get coverage. Why take a chance?

I live in the Smyrna /Vinnings area near the Chattahoochee. Though I wish I could say I was laying on the bed, I was sitting on the toilet when I felt it! It was VERY subtle. I noticed the slightest sway and it made me think of the bigger quake felt in the area around five years ago. That one I barely came out of my slumber to note the house was moving but since I didn’t think that was possible in GA, I didn’t allow myself to fully wake up! When I found out it WASN’T a dream, I was bummed I missed TRULY experiencing it. So it was fun to be awake for this one even if it was smaller…

I am staying with an uncle and aunt who live in Plymouth, Indiana, and I was lying asleep on the floor with the my year and a half daughter on the couch above me. I remember putting her there last night, and when I awoke this morning, at about 8 something, she was laying next to me on the floor. After a few moments, my cell phone rang, and it was my husband who was in Battle Creek, Michigan for drill for the military, and he asked me if I was all right, and I thought he had lost his mind. After him telling me that there was a report of a 5.4 earthquake, I realized what he was talking about. After telling him that we were both fine, he got back to doing his drill, and I became depressed that I didn’t get to feel this earthquake. The last earthquake that I ever felt was when I lived in California about 18 some years ago, and I am going to be turning 22 on Saturday the 19th of April.

i live in terre haute, indiana, about 100 or so miles from the epicenter. I was laying bed about 5:30-5:40am and then all the sudden my bed started shaking violently. Being only 15 years old and never experiencing one of these before i was terrified. It lasted in terre haute for about 30 seconds but it seemed longer. What a way to start the morning!!!

I live in Douglasville and I was out walking my dog this morning around 5:15 .. I heard dogs barking madly throughout the neighborhood and my dog started acting strange .. Outside lights at the school we were walking at started flickering .. I had no idea we were experiencing effects of an earthquake 400 miles away. Nature is amazing !!!

I woke up at 5:37 ( we are an hour ahead) to my bed shaking back and forth. I thought it was a ghost at first. I don’t know which is more irrational thought; the ghost or earthquake?

Definitely felt it around 5:40 or 5:45 in Buford. Lampshades were swaying and sounded like when a car pulls up beside you at a redlight and has the bass blaring in their car.

My husband and I woke up at 4:38 this morning central time. Our bed was shaking and the door was creaking. We didn’t know what it was at first. It lasted about 20 to 30 seconds. We live in Prairie Village, KANSAS we never thought we would feel and earthquake here. It was pretty cool.

I was in bed around 5:30 give or take a few minutes and my whole bed shook. I remember it being similar to the earthquake a few years ago.

i live in NW Indaiana I woke at about 4:30am up with a nauseous feeling that I thought was related to how warm our bedroom was. But, when I went in the bathroom the large sea shell sitting on the top of the toilet was shaking and fell off the toliet. It felt like a car hit our apartment building!

I felt it! I’m in Milwaukee, and it actually woke me up, but in my sleepy state I figured it was a train going by (I grew up living near a railroad). I even heard things tapping in my room. It wasn’t until my sister texted me and was like “omg, quake!” that I realized that I don’t live near a train anymore.

I live in Canton and was sound asleep when the bed began to shake beneath me and the stuff on the dining table began to really rattle. At first, in my sleepiness, I thought it was the cats chasing each other ‘round and was about to yell at them when I realized the whole place seemed to be moving! I looked at the clock when it was over - it was 5:41am. A couple of minutes after noting the time I also noted that the birds began chirping and singing. Amazing. I live on the fourth floor; maybe that is why I felt it so much.

I felt the quake this morning about five-thirty/ish. I could not be sure of the exact time due to my being asleep. I did awaken to the shaken motion of my bed. I immediately thought about the quake of 2003. It lasted about three or four seconds and went away. I called out to my daughter in the next room, but she did not awaken. Later she told me she felt a shaking motion, but thought it was the heating system coming on. About thirty minutes after the motions were felt, our entire lighting in the our home and the sub-division went dark. Whether the earthquake had something to do with it is a mystery. It is quite frightening to know that we are experiencing quakes in the Metro Atlanta Area.

Hey, I live in Martinez, near Augusta, and we have earthquakes on a regular basis. It’s a county ordinance and it occurs every other Friday. Everyone comes into work with their heads still bobbling. Really a sight to see!

About 5:36 am this morning, April 18,2008, my wife and I felt the quake sitting in our living room as we were watching local news on TV. She thought it was a train or big truck passing by….I knew it was a minor quake since I have felt tremors in the past. No damage was done at my home but it did make for an exciting morning. I also felt another small tremor in the early p.m. at my office about 3-miles from my home. Again- no damage…just a moment of suspense.

We felt the tremor from the Illinois Quake here in Elkhart, Indiana located about 2-miles from the Michigan Stae line. Once at about 5:36 am and another tremor in the early afternoon 4-18-08. No damage was done but a bundle of suspense to end the work week..

I live on 14th Street in Midtown. I woke up at 4 am, and after 4:30 am I felt a couple of short, sharp jerks, which couldn’t have lasted more than a couple of seconds. It felt like the beginning of the earthquake centered in San Jose last fall; I was in San Francisco for a conference at the time. It didn’t feel as strong as the tremors from the centered in northern Alabama a few years ago, though, but I was convinced that an earthquake had struck somewhere. I looked at the USGS web site, and saw that an earthquake had struck in southern Illinois, but I assumed that that was too far away to account for what I felt. I was amazed to learn from watching The NewsHour on PBS that the earthquake was felt as far away as Atlanta, and that it occurred at the same time as the tremors I felt.

I was at my daughters Dr. app. this morning about 11am ona 2nd floor in Ft. Wayne Indiana. And all the sudden this room started to slowly move. I thought for a minute that i was going crazy. But after it happened the nurse came in and I questioned her about it so I could be @ peace that I did feel what I felt. She then told me that all the bottles were in the cupboards shaking and there computers were and why. Until this I had no idea about the quake. It was a very weird feeling and kinda scary after I really had time to think about it.

All I felt was a very, very, slight vibration— nothing that spelled “earthquake.” Today’s earthquake was very minor compared to the 2003 earthquake.

The 2003 earthquake was in the middle of the night and my bed moved back-and-forth. I was really tired that night but I do remember the shaking but I immediately went back to sleep.

An earthquake was centered in the Gulf of Mexico in 2007 and I felt a slight back-and-forth movement. It happened on a Saturday or a Sunday afternoon and I was reading in a chair.

The 2003 Atlanta earthquake was the strongest.

The bed began to vibrate at shortly before 5:45 a.m. in Macon, GA in the Massee Apartments, eight stories with a basement sturdily built in 1924. The water began to gurgle in the pipes. It was frightening to feel this big building moving on the seventh floor. It’s an unforgettable sensation to awaken to the bed vibrating—reminiscent of those old motels where you could put in a quarter and the bed would vibrate. I looked out the window to see if WW III had begun. My husband was already up, sitting at the dining room table and felt the building shake. I think most people just slept right through it.

At least we haven’t had anything of the 8+ magnitudes of the 4 1811-12 quakes, one of which made the Mississippi River run backwards. Check usgs.gov for more on this. You can record your own experience on the “Did you feel it?” link. The 4:37am CST quake was felt 1198 miles away in upstate New York; also near Kerney, NB; St. John, FL; MN, WS, IA, MS, and all along the eastern seaboard. I live 50 miles from the epicenters, which are just west of the Illinois-Indiana line 38 mi from Evansville, IN. As of April 21, 8PM CST, we have had a total of 25 quakes!! We woke on Fri. morning to the bed shaking for several minutes. The first (5.2) was actually 2 quakes 4 seconds apart, for those of you who felt several waves, you are not crazy! There was a small aftershock a couple hours later, and at 10:14AM CST a 4.5 was recorded. Numerous quakes less than 3.0 followed. Monday 4/21 12:38am CST, a 4.0 was recorded.

I wanted to comment that I noticed Indiana was not in the list of areas that felt the quake. In actuality Indiana felt the quake and some people experienced a bit of damage behind it. Along with feeling the earthquake the first time around, a day or two later many in Indiana felt another quake. Also, the article says that midwesterners are more accustomed to earthquakes, i don’t believe this is true.
