Have you had to choose between work and love?

Have you ever been in a dilemma because of the feeling in your heart versus the rules of the job?

That’s what’s happened to Georgia’s DOT board chairman Mike Evans, who was working with DOT Commissioner Gena Abraham. Evans announced today he will resign from the board because the two have developed a relationship.

No decision was made or announced on Abraham’s future with the department. Both are single.

Has anything similar ever happened to you? How did you deal with it? What would you do differently?

Post your stories here. Would you talk to a reporter about how you or people you’ve known have dealt with these delicate situations? If so, email Helena Oliviero at holiviero@ajc.com.

Its great that someone in public service did what was right before there was any conflict on interest charges levied against them. I wish the two of them the best of luck.

I was pleased with Gena until she made the comment on how she would bring her people to upper management offices and not open positions for hire to the public. She has lost all credibility with GDOT employees with the announcement of a blossoming “relationship” with the deciding factor in her hire and I hate that… because I’ve been a victim of the good ole boy system that i’d dearly hoped she would abolish even the essence of it. Too bad

I doubt very serious if Gena & Mike made this decision after just one month of dating. There’s more to this story. But, they’re both unmarried people and they can do whatever they want as long as it doesn’t affect the job. He was right to leave the board.

This is VERY upsetting.

Remember the fuss made a couple of months ago during the DOT Chairman vote in the House? Richardson was supporting someone other than Evans for DOT Chairman because Evans supported Abraham for DOT Commissioner. In hindsight, Richardson and others probably already knew of their relationship.

Many Legislators voted with their hearts and constituents and supported Evans, only to be ostracized by Richardson. Some lost their committee seats. Others lost their offices in the Capital Bldg. These people put their political necks on the line for Evans and this is how he returns the favor?!?!?!

Make no mistake, this relationship didn’t “develop” over the last month. It was going on WHILE he was campaigning for the Chairmanship.

The only reason he stepped down now is because it was about to become public via someone else - who perhaps had even more damaging information.

Evans now makes me sick.

this is the height of unprofessionalism.

They both need to go, and shame on them.

Our tax dollars have been wasted by them and it will cost us likely hundreds of thousands of dollars more to replace the two of them and repair the damage, all for a department

In reality, with the departure of one, the essence of ‘conflict of interest’ is dismissed… there is no need to kick her out as this department needs some bootkicking and discipline, and from someone who has the intelligence and foresight to do it..she has already brought several issues to the forefront and will probably do a great job…as far as the romance, unless he goes to contracting and she starts awarding him anything but herself, with state money…so be it…leave her alone..!!! I am sure there will be enough watchful eyes on her from now on to pump ‘sensational journalism’ without having to worry about her performance…we need a smart and diligent person here..this has been a black hole toooo long..!!

Times New Roman, 12 Font. My My for the love of Pete. Some things are just too difficult to imagine. Just a few weeks ago a video conference was held and one of the topics was Ethics within the Department of Transportation. There is a clear policy in State Government that states no relationship within the chain of command should ever take place. However, in this case it has. So be it. I’m wondering if Gena were a man would there be any doubt that tomorrow morning the State of Georgia would be advertising a Position of “Commissioner of Transportation”? Citizens of the State do not be deceived, the GDOT did not make a mess of Transportation; we do as we are told or we look for a new job plain and simple. Look to your Senators, Representatives and Law makers for this colossal injustice to the tax payers. Do you honestly think that a road gets built on the recommendation of an employee that earns 50 thousand dollars per year? Think about it for a while and it will all become clear to you.

The same folks who now say “oh, it’s just a personal matter and no one’s business” are the same folks who said that after our president was caught messing with a White House subordinate. So let’s clarify: You don’t get to knock boots with someone at work, whether you work over them, under them or beside them. It’s … just … not …right. Keep it out of the office and you’re fine, but this doesn’t meet that test. One of them had to go.

Sounds to me like they are definately between your legs. I seriously hope you do not think anyone beleives you and your lover were together for only a month. That is a crock he was the final voter that gave you the nod. Of course any lover would do that for the other. My next question is have you been in the sack with the Gov. also ? If Mr. Evans left his post in order to persue a relationship with the commissioner then frankly he’s an ethical man. I don’t find this to be a big deal. It does make me wonder however if the man who wasn’t chosen for the chairman used his political cloudt to trash a seemingly very nice woman because he didn’t want the good ole boy network to end. This has character smear all over it and I hope that karma bites them in return.

Think about this. They have been together since August; Gena was appointed Commissioner in October, with a 6 to 7 vote; which several Board Members were influenced by Mike Evans. The first major article released before the end of December, just prior to Evan’s reelection as Chairman; and then another article released prior or the same time that Mike was being investigated by the media about the monitor group. Take another look people. All of this was done at the expense of so many good DOT employees. Define Mean Person = GENA

I feel sorry for Mike. He has fallen into the HO spell of Gena Abraham. I’ve known Gena for a long time, and this is not the first time she has slept her way to the top. When she was at GSFIC, she took pictures of her private parts (breast and vagina)on GSFIC’s copy machine and placed them on the Director’s desk. She would also make sexual comments not only about the men in our office, but also women. Gena is a lesbian who has affairs with men, women, couples and people of all races (blacks, asians, etc.) even in the bars and strip clubs. She is getting what she deserves. I knew she would do it to herself. Her darkness is finally coming to light. It’s alot she is hiding. More to come.

Why is anyone surprised about a Personal relationships between a boss and a subordinate at gdot??? It happens in almost every office at gdot. This is just the “relationship” of the moment. At least Gena and Mike are both single and Gena seems qualified to do her job as commissioner. Why not look into why certain department heads are allowed to hire or promote their friends and relatives? I’m still waiting on someone to look into the personal relationship between gdot’s i.t. director Jeff Hill and the seemingly “unqualified” enterprise architect working for him, Debbie Poss. Could we request someone investigate that relationship? Why did Hill “create” that position for Poss? What exactly are her credentials and where was she an enterprise architect prior to her position at gdot? Perhaps someone could investigate why Hill “created” a position at gdot for his friend Nasim Ahmed. Where was Ahmed a security architect prior to gdot? Sonny Perdue needs to investigate the good ‘ole boy network in each department.

Evans did the right thing by resigning. And if Abraham does get to stay on in her position, I do have to say that’s a change, and probably a positive one — that for once, the woman has more seniority and it’s clear has more value to the organization than the guy. HOWEVER: I’m really disappointed in Abraham. I admire her a lot, and this is such a huge distraction from the excellent work she’s doing. She may be able to overcome it, but why derail such a great start? Not to mention the prices that others paid for both Abraham and Evans, to put them in those jobs, so that they could make a change for the better. I don’t even like Sonny Perdue, but tonight, I feel sorry for the guy.

All of you hypocritical losers need to get a life. If the commissiner would have been a man this would not have been a story. This is news because she is a woman in a high up position. The only people who are mad are the good ole boys. You are mad because you have to earn your paychecks now and stop your every morning 1 and a half breakfast at LOB. What nerve, we could not sit down for an hour everyday and eat breakfast but you felt you could. I hope the commissioner get to keep her position. She has exposed alot of bulls!!! around here. She has proven in her short time her that she can do the job. So what if she wants to have a personal life, you have one don’t you. AJC you are so fake by calling this in your initial headlines an affair. How can it be an affair if they are both married. So fake just to get someone to read it. I see you later came back and said they were both single. You knew that when you put affair in the first story. And GDOT employees complaining about ethics, please ethics have been gone before GENA came up here. Stealing time and property, sleeping with everybody, upper management playing golf and telling their secretaries that they are in meetings, managers hiring family members especially in the District offices. Please quit acting like she’s perfect. She is an attractive young lady and she is not dead. You people really need to get a life and stop being so damn judgemental. This is the best commissioner we have had since I’ve been here. People are actually working and dressing like they are at work. Give me a break. Please move on talk about the skeltons in your closet. And so what if she brougt her on people up here to work at GDOT. If you were in her position, would you not someone in your corner who you could trust to work with you that closely. Think about it before you be so quick to judge.

Some folks on here want to say this is no big deal. Others think it’s an issue only because she is a woman. The truth is, Gena is a bipolar psycho. So many good employees have been trampled by her for the sake of her own gains. When she is referred to as ruthless in the newspaper, it’s not a compliment. This small space doesn’t allow for all the war stories that could be shared here, but please don’t try and make this out as 2 innocent, single people who found love in the work place. This is not a Lifetime movie. I’m still trying to piece together my career after my path crossed with Gena, so don’t go shedding any tears for her. I would only tell Mr. Evans to run as fast and far away as he can. Now that he is no longer the DOT Board Chair, Gena will have no use for him and throw him to the side like so many before him.

It took me a few months to understand the depth of his lack of support. He is from the middle east and is not open to very driven business women.

After being together for five years I had no idea he viewed women in this way. It is amazing how true the saying is, “when you close one door another one opens”. The moment I let go of this relationship my business moved forward more then I could ever imagine.

I slept with my boss, but we’re not together. Now it sucks because every time he does something I don’t agree with I want to get him fired by telling HIS boss that we slept together. If I do that, though, I lose my job.

Word of advice: if you meet someone at work, start looking for another job. That way, if it gets serious, you have something lined up and you can just leave you job and stay together with your significant other. If it doesn’t get serious but the other person is a psycho, you can STILL leave. Or, you can stay. Either way, all of us should be on the look out for new jobs all the time in this economy. Thank you Sonny and Dubya.

Why did he leave? Gena is the Director of SRTA not just the DOT Commissioner (also appointed by the Governor which there are no two positions of this stature held in the state by the same person.) Gena has another paid position or is it. Would that be double dipping? Gena serves on the board for MARTA. ARC and Cobb County stated they work well the Commissioner. I believe that she has something to do with GRTA. The Commissioner brings her complete staff with her because she can and she trusts them and she likes to take off. I have a problem with this since GDOT is alreaDy in financial straights. Our senior management are top notch and do what they are told by the Governor, go to the website and follow the org. chart. It finally comes from the Commissioner but it begins at the top. Gena has destroyed moral of the good dedicated employees. Someone mentioned $50,000 in salary but they have to be up the food chain. Gena has tried to terminate employees forless than this but failed thanks to some smart supervisors that wanted to keep experienced people. The others that were terminated would have eventually been caught. It has happened in the past but it did not make the news. It was just standard operating procedures. Gena gave a speech on how prejudice the choices for hiring procedures at GDOT had been. To me this is so obvious. Gena, as she likes to be called, - not she, - not that woman - not her - has lost a lot of credibility. In her last speech, Gena stated there was going to be more bad publicity which was another audit that is costing the state millions of dollars. GDOT was audited in the fall, again for the past two months, and now another one. It appears to me that Gena is really having a problem finding a problem. The millions of dollars for this audits could be used for much better causes. Gena has no idea how the DOT operates and Mike was probably guiding her. Mike made the statement that they had worked hand and glove for the past several months. MIke will still be her adviser. I can understand the relationship but I do not believe that he stepped down willing. With the tirads that Gena has displayed to the media about GDOT and being transparent, I think that “she” should be forced to resign. I believe in 8 hours work for 8 hours pay but she cannot possibly be giving the DOT 8 hours or the more than 8 hours that she says with all her other commitments plus she stated that she likes to take off. (One reason for bringing her staff that she could trust to GDOT.) Granted she is a smart female and it was good to see a female in a top position. As the Governor stated on the news, when he sees her coming something is “smelly.” GDOT has lost a lot of credibility and now the Commissioner has also. THE ONLY OUTCOME THAT I CAN SEE AND HOPE TO SEE FROM THIS IS THAT THE COMMISSIONER WILL RESIGN OR THAT THE BOARD WILL ASK FOR HER TO RESIGN. NO ONE IS IRREPLACEABLE. This is not a personal issue for me. It is just an astute observation from someone that it will not have any impact on. ACTIVE PROJECTS AND PLANNED PROJECTS OR SO DIFFERENT. I WOULD THINK THAT A FIRST GRADER COULD UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE. EVERYONE HAS ALWAYS TRIED TO CHANGE THAT BUT SOMEHOW THE ORG. CHART GETS IN THE WAY. I THINK THAT THE INVESTIGATION IS GOING TO SHOW THAT A LOT OF SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES CAUSED A LOT OF EXTRA MONEY TO BE SPENT UNNECESSARILY and THE GOVERNOR. WHAT IS REALLY FUNNY IS THAT THEY ARE THE ONES THAT HAD TO VOTE FOR THIS LAST INVESTIGATION WHICH IS MORE THAN AN AUDIT. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT BECAUSE THE TAX PAYERS COULD GET A REAL AWAKENING. DOT employees from the Commissioner down do as they are instructed. I wish the paper would investigate a little more into some of these issues but Monday is just around the corner. I noticed that nothing was mentioned in the paper about her other commitments. Gena has the same outfit on that she was wearing the day she gave her last State of the Department talk about a week ago. I think the DOT deserves better. I do not believe that the DOT is in as bad a shape as she makes it out to be. I have worked for people who are tougher than her. Gena has some good ideas but as I said no one is irreplaceable. SHE SHOULD GO AND SO SHOULD THE PEOPLE THAT SHE BROUGHT WITH HER ALONG WITH THEIR HIGH SALARIES. PAY THE EMPLOYEES THAT ARE THERE NOW.

Some things are common knowledge and have been in the news. Gena has IT track everything but have you ever heard of outsiders, former, or concerned citizens. Someone could be like her and have signed off for today. Do you know how many weeks she has taken off since she has been the Commissioner? As long as you have the time, use it. GDOT gets 30 min. lunch and 15 min. for breaks. Nothing wrong with that. Look at the chip commerical where the female is working and the men aren’t. And don’t use names. I hope Gena does know who!

If you didn’t like change, you could not work for DOT. AS for idiots at the DOT, why don’t you try it. I am sick and tired of people throwing off on employees from the DOT. There are good and bad employees in all organizations, private as well.

Gena is trying to make a change for the better and that’s exactly what GDOT needs. It’s time for a change. I do support her for that. For all you women that have slept to work your way up the latter (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE)should not be throwing stones at her. If you feel she should resign YOU should also resign.

Will all former “lovers at work” who lost their jobs as a result of violating the same State Policy sue the state and get their jobs back?

Now we know why she got her job! Typical politics! Corrupt to the core! This country needs to rid itself of every politician, at the federal and state level. Lets just start over!

Gena Abraham is a disgrace to Georgia and especially to women. This woman admitted today that her relationship started right after Mike Evans was re-elected to the DOT Board. Oh….funny last week she and Mike said it had only started only a month ago. Today she says it was right after the election, Feb. 1, 2008. So for 2.5 months they have known they were violation policy. Hm…..and during that time she wrote her scorching letter on ethics to employees. Can anyone see a lawsuit coming besides me?She as the titular head of DOT can never fire or take any action against any employee beyond her punishment or stands the risk, most assuredly, of being sued by anyone not white female and under 40. Did no one understand the lega consequences of this issue? this was not just about two single people being involved! this was about someone who had been riding on a white horse breaking the rules while metting out punishment in the process. Folks!!! wake up!!!! She has lost all credibility! Ga. is a laughingstock across the nation. Don’t believe that? go to a national transporation meeting and I already what the jokes will be. This again, is a disgrace!!!!
