What keeps you motivated?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Working out can be hard work. But that doesn’t mean you have to dread it. Because, let’s face it, when we dread something, we usually avoid it. And that’s what many of us are doing with our exercise routines.
To help those who still need a little exercise utopia, “My Favorite Workout” will feature Atlantans who have found their favorite workout.
For those who found the right exercise routine, what works for you?

I have accepted the fact that I will not exercise in a gym. I absolutely despise it.
However, I love getting outside and exercising. I can’t run because I am too heavy right now and it hurts my joints. But, I either walk or bike to work 3-4 days a week.
It’s fun because it means I get to be outside with a panoramic view. And I can do it while also obtaining a second objective (arrive to work or home) so I don’t feel the “mom-guilt” of taking time away from my family to exercise.
I’ve lost 24lbs. Just have 53 more to go. :p

I became a member of a kicboxing gym around 2002 and have never gone back to a regular gym. I find that non-traditional gyms are more challenging and it’s never the same workout. Having instructors also forces you to do the best you can do and push yourself harder. Boxing and Kickboxing tone your body in ways I was never able to achieve in a traditional gym, without the help of a PT.

If you are looking for something completly out of the box- y’all need to try out CrossFit. There are six or seven CrossFit gyms around Atlanta area. CrossFit is simply the most effective and efficient core strength and conditioning program around. It has beem adopted at Law Enforcement, Military and Fire Fighting academies all around the country. They just had a big write up about CrossFit this month in Muscle & Fitness and in Mens Health May issues. It is awesome. I’ve yet to get bored, and the results are fantastic. The program is based around constantly varied, funtionsl exercises. I go to BTB CrossFit in the poncey highlands area. You can check out the CrossFit main site for all CF affiliate locations and for general info on CrossFit. www.crossfit.com

I’ve been working out for 15 years and it’s taken me a while to find the right combination of exercises. I find that I get bored really quickly with just lifting weights. My Chiropractic College roommate is a former boxer and he had me hitting the focus mits on a daily basis with wraps and gloves. Wow, what a great workout! Within 15-20 minutes of intense mitt work, I’m on the ground soaking in sweat. In addition, to weight training, I picked up the art of jump rope. I jump rope in between every other set for 1 min, as it’s a great calorie burner that will get you lean! Running hurts my knees and back, but for some strange reason, jumping rope doesn’t have any adverse affects on my joints.
Jen, give it a try as it’s easier on the joints, and if it is used properly within your regimen can burn just as many calories, if not more, than running. By the end of the workout, I feel energetic, fit, and lively. I highly recommend for people to pick up a jump rope and start practicing!
