How does your office cope with spring break?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s spring break and that means thousands of metro Atlanta students - and their parents - are taking time off.
Does you office resemble a ghost town this time of year?
There are clear benefits - less traffic, the boss may be away and shorter lines at local lunchtime eateries.
But it may also mean more work for your cubicle mates left behind. If you’re still at the office, do you work harder or less when it’s spring break?

The boss is away this week but I will still be here plugging away. My co-workers, on the other hand, are a different story. Every single one of them will take advantage of his not being here and call out sick or have sudden “doctor appointments” and have to leave early or come in late. And one person has already brought their kid to work in order to avoid paying for day care.

Thank God most of us work out of the home. I tend to hear the little ones more in the background around holiday breaks. Visitors are not allowed to loiter at our business so the parents are proactive and find sitters many of them who are teenage girls out of school themselves. Children at the workplace are a distraction and should not be there.

“Most of us work out of the home”
Who do I have to kill to be able to work “out of the home”?

It’s only day one and I have gotten so much done because of fewer meetings and phone calls. Less noise and distraction. This is a great time to work!

Like the holidays, it is a good time to whittle away at the to do list b/c there are not so many distractions. I like to take most of my vacation when everyone is here and have a reason to get away from the craziness. The traffic was not that great this a.m., but will see how it is on the way home tonight. I will be on break Thurs and Friday and will join the rest for some R&R. Spring break somehow “benefits everyone” in some shape or form.

There’s only one person at my office who has a school-age child. Everyone else is either past that stage in their life (the CEO and VPs are 60 and up), too young for that stage in their life (lots of early / mid-20s people who aren’t anywhere close to getting married or having kids), electively childfree, or gay. It’s a good place to work!
My vacation starts at the end of next week. This week has my permission to pass by quickly.

This is my first time going through spring break on my job and it is a ghost town..everyone that is here is just walking around doing absolutley nothing..The boss is out as well, and I am caught up on all of my work, now I’m just sitting boared out of my wits…doing nothing is the hardest part believe it or not.

It has been lovely at the office! It’s like being in the office during the days directly before and after the Christmas holidays.
I will bring my 14-year-old to work with me a couple of days this week to do some filing for me. For payment, I’ll take her out for nice leisurely lunches. She actually enjoys coming to help me out in the office and, since so many people are out, having here here isn’t a distraction to my co-workers.
