Will prayer help Georgia’s drought?

UPDATE Tuesday afternoon: The prayer service is now over. So far, the heavens haven’t opened and poured down rain. Still, do you think a gubernatorial prayer service was a good idea, and do you expect it to have an effect?

Tuesday morning, Gov. Sonny Perdue will host a gathering at the capitol to appeal to a “higher power” to provide Georgia relief from the drought.

The prayer service is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on the Washington Street side of the statehouse. Along with those gathering to pray, some “peaceful opposition” to the prayer is expected to be on hand.

What are your thoughts about praying for a change in the weather? Have you had an experience where prayer has effected some change?

Who’s your favorite musical group “cutie”?

The Wiggles will perform in Gwinnett on Sunday to the delight of kids - and some moms.

Chatta What? City’s name a mouthful

Residents have nicknamed it Chattahoochee Hills, but the official name of Fulton County’s newest city is Chattahoochee Hill Country.

It’s a long name — particularly hard on editors who write headlines. Got a better idea for the name? One venter suggested Chatt Hills.

The city, located in south Fulton, held its first election on Tuesday to choose a mayor and city council. Should it also rethink its name?

Help Jack Bauer! Write “24”

Fox Broadcasting has announced that the Emmy-winning hit show “24” is being put on hold because of the Writers Guild strike.

The plan had been for “24” to return in January. But not enough episodes have been written, and Fox doesn’t want the show to start running, then stop.

After all Jack Bauer has done to save our country and the whole world, surely we can return the favor. If the Writers Guild won’t write, the fans will. What are your ideas for a new season of “24?” How should Jack save the world this time?

How do you rate the Foxx, Rascal Flatts performance?

Actor-comedian-singer Jamie Foxx joined Rascal Flatts on stage last night with a performance of “She Goes All the Way” from the group’s new CD.

Foxx and Rascal’s lead vocalist Gary LeVox have known each other for years and were roommates for a brief time in the late 1990s.

It appears history does repeat itself. Foxx won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the film “Ray.” Although Charles was major R&B and jazz figure, he also had a major impact on country music.

What did you think of the performance?

Excuse? Me?

Dear Mrs. Treacher:

Please excuse Tommy from school today. He is home sick.

Signed,

My Mom

As an excuse, it leaves something to be desired, which is where The Excused Absence Network can help. The web-based company sells “fake excuse notes that appear to come from doctors or hospitals,” according to an Associated Press story.

Other options include a fake jury summons or an authentic-looking funeral service program complete with comforting poems and a list of pallbearers.

“Millions of Americans work dead-end job, and sometimes they just need a day off,” said John Liddell, co-founder of the Internet-based company Vision Matters, which sells the notes as part of its Excused Absence Network. “People are going to lie anyway. How many people go visit their doctors every day when they’re not sick because they just need a note?”

This could put an end to the lame, improvised excuse. So it’s time to share.

What was the best fake excuse you pulled off? What was the worst?

Country music’s “Men Only” club

There’s no sign that says “For Men Only” at the Country Music Association, but it might feel like there’s one.

No female performers are included in the CMA’s nominees for entertainer of the year honor. All nominees are men, as has been the case for the last few years. Read story here.

How do you feel about the lack of female performers among the nominees? If you could include a female country performer, who would you pick and why?
