Vikki Locke resigns from Star 94

After a successful 17-year run at Star 94, “Steve and Vikki in the Morning” co-host Vikki Locke turned in her resignation Tuesday.
When contacted by Buzz, Locke cited ongoing health concerns as the reason behind her decision. As Buzz readers will recall, Locke was hospitalized last year after doctors detected a blood clot that had traveled from her arm to her shoulder. Despite weekly tests and monitoring, Locke’s doctors have been unable to completely dissolve the clot or diagnose its origin.
“My husband [Atlanta businessman Michael Hughes] and I have discussed it at length and as he has told me, ‘Your health is really the most important thing,’ ” Locke said. “I haven’t been sleeping and my schedule has been ultra-busy, which is just the nature of the beast in this business. I’m not blaming anyone but me for that. I just decided that I can’t do this anymore.”
Locke said that she told McCoy, her long-time on-air partner, about her decision first.
Said Locke: “He’s been very supportive throughout. He wants the best for me.”
Locke’s contract with Star 94 runs through December.
“We’re certainly saddened,” said Star 94 general manager Mark Kanov. “Steve and Vikki are in the top one percent of the top morning shows in this country. I couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve accomplished.” Kanov said that Locke will remain on air through the end of her contract.
Added Kanov: “We’ll have to decide on January 1 what course mornings will take at Star 94.”
McCoy and Locke first teamed at Atlanta’s old Power 99 in 1989 when she was the station’s self-described “news chick.” Aside from concentrating on her health, Locke says she has no immediate plans beyond Star 94.
Cracked Locke: “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. The thought of unemployment is a little scary.”

I never honestly listen to the radio station, but I have always seen and/or heard commericals about the “Steve and Vikki” show. You appear to be a very sweet woman, I wish you well with your health and pray that everything gets better for you in the future.

I agree Tom, that station’s rating has dropped big time, maybe Star 94 can hire this new DJ I been scouting around town, DJ Stevie-J, if you hear where he’s playing around town, go listen to him, Please V-103, don’t call him… he don’t need his career messed up being around those GHETTO FOLKS you have, maybe KISS-104.1.

Vikki - Nobody believes the health story, you need some new material. The station is for sale and the writing is on the wall. A wholesale house-cleaning is in the works and everyone knows it. Thanks for the laughs - increasingly diminishing laughs I must admit - over the years, but you and Steve are both played out, a couple of hangers-on chatter boxes. The mindless, lame as h*ll morning banter has not only taken over your show, but it’s unamusing, forgettable banter at that. Enjoy retirement. I’m sure we’ll run in to you at the buffet line.

To Atlanta Radio Sucks…
Atlanta Radio is not on a par with other markets, that is true. And, there is a history behind that (The FCC limiting the amount of licenses here, for one).
However, your comment about Vicki is just wrong and out of line.
Bad Karma, dude. Let’s hope someone offers you some forgiveness in the not too distant future.

I’m in my 30’s and I’ve been listening to Steve & Vikki since I was in high school. No, they aren’t for everyone, but I truly enjoy my ride with them in the mornings. Vikki, I wish you all the best with your health and with life in general! Before you go, put in a good word for Alisa! She has a great personality and would help keep Steve and Tom in their place! The chemistry she has with the morning show is hard to find! =)

I have been an Atlanta radio listener for years, studied broadcasting in college and have listened to Star 94 several times and listened to the Steve & Vikki morning show as well. I wish Vikki well in her post Star 94 life and hope that her health gets better. I think the Cindy and Ray show may eventually move to the morning drive(they would be a good replacement). I have always liked Steve McCoy(an Atlanta morning radio icon-I remember when he was on Z93 and Power 99) but I think its time to put some younger voices on there. I wish the station well in the direction they would like to go.

Vikki - BTW, I will never be able to tell you in person since I don’t nor will I ever be some kind of loser deejay roadie who shows up at remote broadcasts screaming for a t-shirt, but I have to let you know what I consider your career low point at Star 94. A few years back you gave some pathetic, heartless bride-to-be a $100 - a $100!! - if she would call her fiance on the air and tell him she didn’t love him anymore and wanted to break off their pending wedding. The poor man was devastated and heartbroken and, I’ll never forget this, told the loser bride that he would always love her and be there for her even if she didn’t love him anymore. It was the most despicable, demeaning set up I can remember. I never felt the same way about you or Steve, since there was no other intent other than a sick ploy for laughs. I hope that young man was smart enough to dump that bride before hooking up with someone who would trade $100 for humiliating him, and herself for that matter, on the air at the expense of their relationship.

Well, I definitely will miss Vikki Locke, but I will never understand why her name has such a stigma in Atlanta radio. I don’t think she was that annoying to listen to, but both Steve & Vikki should move to B98.5 and let Cindy and Ray take mornings. Put MICHAEL BAISDEN in the afternoons on Star 94 (steal him from Grown Fuzz Radio 102.5).

I’m surprised and disappointed at the mean-spirited comments on this site. Vikki Locke may not be your style, but she and Steve have been entertaining radio audiences in Atlanta for many years. Kudos to Star 94 for keeping them around as long as they have, and not replacing them with “younger models.” Vikki, I wish you the best of luck and many happy, healthy years with your husband.
