Are you watching ‘Roots’? What do you think?

‘Roots’ is being broadcast again, 30 years after it first riveted the country.

In 1977, ABC thought the twelve-hour mini-series about slavery would get few viewers, according the the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Instead, it made ratings history, with more viewers than any previous entertainment program, the museum said.

Are you watching it this week? Why?

What is it about the show? Why do you think it has drawn such a large audience?

I am watching. Missed a little bit of it but I am watching again. I was six when it orginally aired, but I remember sitting at home with my whole family watching it.

…and so the AJC does it again! If the readers know what turn this blog will take, why don’t the editors (or do they)?

I can’t ever, in seven years of residency, remember the AJC asking its audience if it would be watching a specific show.

Oh well, let the hate blog of the day begin…

The paper must get major hits on these blogs, which equates to more advertising dollars.

Yes, the hate speech will start in T-minus any second now, but I’ll bite.

I’m watching, because it is one of the best representations of American slavery in any medium. I still can’t watch it all the way through without sobbing like a baby. So many want slaves’ decendants to “get over it”, but after less than 150 years, no one or no country for that matter, can truly be expected to move on from 400-years of abuse, suffering, and genocide. Roots is a classic and part of television history. I’m surprised ABC isn’t touting this anniversary harder. What gives?

I was in middle school when it originally aired - major fights at my school in my hometown of Brunswick, GA - for that whole week - I think it is a relevant part of history - and we all need a “refresher” course - I’m having my 14 year old son watch it. He needs to know.

I watch with tears, during the whipping scene, with my 8 year old son as I explain to him that things were not always the same as they are now.

Yes, I am watching. I want to be reminded of this travesty. I need my anger towards this issue refueled. Four hundred years ago we had “Roots”, now we have Imus, Michael Richards, war veterans being recognized decades later, black men wrongly imprisioned for raping white women, police violating men with broomsticks, unfair sentencing in the courtroom-nothing has changed. I need to be reminded of that fact.

YES, I am watching, as are many of you, with tears in my eyes and pain in my soul.

I was 8 when it premiered and it was required watching then as it should be now.

As a parent myself now, I watch it with new eyes, not lost on the fact that my parents were my age when it first aired.

I take this forum to thank them for being consciencious enough to teach us about the fate we have endured.

To those of you who are watching, wherever you are, may we find peace in our solidarity-and to those of you who are not, I pray that you will be enlightened one day so that you can face the horrible truth of this bloodied and beastly part of American history.

I have to agree. There is a forum to discuss these things. But I can’t help but believe that the AJC truly get’s a kick out of inciting racial tension when there is no need to. Why don’t you set up a live forum where people can discuss racial issues in person. Instead of presenting a stage for anonymous cowards to say things that they would not normally say in person.

we’re in lithonia and tv one is channel 241 on direct tv. i’m watching with my 11 and 8-yr olds tucked under my arms, fielding questions left and right. we (especially they) won’t be able to watch every minute so i plan to get the dvd so we can see all of it this summer. i was 11 when my family was glued to the set when it aired 30 years ago. an eye-opener indeed and a must-see for EVERYONE.
