Wintry mix hits metro

It’s raining, it’s snowing, are Atlantans’ driving habits showing? As the metro area struggles with a wet and potentially icy rush hour, what are you seeing where you are? Is snow or ice accumulating on the ground? Are the streets icing up? Give us a report from your neighborhood or from the roads and streets along your commute.

It’s a mix of rain and freezing precipitation in East Cobb, but it doesn’t seem to be sticking anywhere except for the windshield of my car and the front steps. Not slippery and, so far, not even pretty to look at.

All I’m seeing is breathless reporting on WSB TV. Pretty funny to watch.

Tiffany Reynolds and Joquitta Williams are in Pickens & Habersham counties acting like they’ve never seen snow before. If you’re a hick with a four-wheeler and want to be on TV then head on up there.

Thank goodness they have Collins Spencer and Carol Sbarge directing the viewers attention to the bottom of the screen every 4 minutes for school closings as if you’d miss that….

The most grueling part of WSB’s coverage is having to sit through the “Springer Mountain Farms Chicken” commercials. Hokie, Hokie, Hokie!!!

Im in East Gwinnett. Roads are just wet. Some sleet on the roof..Now getting a little freezing rain. Once again alot of bark and no bite. As usual. Since when did the NWS issue winter storm warnings for rain? This is why people are unprepared when something really happens. NWS gets an F on forecasting along with all the other goofy weather people on the local channels for saying it was going to be bad.

On my drive to work at a little after 7 AM I saw not one but two cars on the road without lights on, no lights period. I mean come on, just how stupid can a person be? It’s dark, raining, sleeting, snowing…whatever and these two idiots can’t connect the dots in their brain to know to turn their lights on. First off, Georgia law dictates if your windshield wipers are on, then your lights must be on. I was compelled to follow one vehicle out of curiosity to see just what it is this person is qualified to do for a living. I bet if or when they don’t get a better job or a promotion they will have a host of excuses why they didn’t get the job or promotion, but one of them will not be because they are dumber than a bag of dirt. If you drove this morning without your vehicle lights on, your gray matter is the underwear you wore yesterday and not part of your brain. Some of you won’t get that, but then again…some of you drove without your lights on this morning. Do the math.

My wife is in Cleveland OH on business this week. She is orginally from Mississipi, so she was in for a shock. I told her about the little snow we have here, and she laughed about how the northerners talk about the south shutting down on 1-2 inches of snow. My wife said it has snowed continuously since Monday, and tons of snow. Of course she wants to leave now and come home to the “real winter”LOL

She said there is 2-3 inches falling, and people are driving fast and that the schools are open.

I am a native Atlantan and I dont like cold weather or snow, but don’t we really overeact? How dangerous is 1-2 inches? Its time to stop shutting down everytime we get a dusting of snow or a little bit of ice.

Folks like Ralph just don’t get it; their ignorance on the subject of weather amazes me. And no, we’re not overreacting. It’s not that us here in the south are scared of a little “dusting” of snow. What you have to realize is that we’re not talking about snow, we’re talking about freezing rain and sleet. Most of the winter weather we get here in the south is in the form of mixed precipitation. If and when the roadways are covered by ice (Ralph, ice isn’t the same as snow for those who didn’t take elementary school science class) you can’t drive. Period. No one can drive on solid ice. It’s simply not possible. FYI Ralph: I hear the local elementary school is teaching a class this week on weather. You might want to attend.

It is always hilarious to see the response to a little winter weather in the peach state. This morning in Hawley MN it was 7 degrees above zero with 4 to six inches of snow on the ground and light snow falling. I drove 52 miles to work at an average speed of 62 mph. This weekend the high temps are forcasted to be in the neighborhood of -10 (that’s 10 BELOW ZERO), with lows of -25 to 30. Add in a 20 to 30 mph wind and you have wind chills of -40 to -50. There will be no run on bread and milk at the local grocery stores and life will go on as always. The only concessions will be that we plug our vehicles in (engine block heaters) and put on an extra layer of clothes. You can say what you will about the intellegence of someone who would live up here, but as my father-in-law told me when I moved here from Woodstock in 1995, “the cold weather keeps the riff-raff out. Stay warm, y’all!

It was horribly in Dunwoody. There was water everywhere. Rain, rain, rain. Oh my god, it was like Armageddon. Water on the grass, water on the concrete, water on my car, water everywhere. I’ve holed myself up in my house for fear of this water. Thank God for Glenn Burns and all the Atlanta meteorologist who kept me updated on the progress of this incredible display of water.

Spent over $150 on a genarator, bread, milk and bottled water. Our family was huddled up in one room without a window to sleep last night just in case the snow/ice broke through a window and we would freeze. Icy weather can wreak havoc on one’s social life.

This morning, I had a breakfast date with a nice, young man named Mike Vick, and we had a great time. Apparently, however, the icy weather and possible traffic problems were an issue for him.

When I mentioned after breakfast that we could head up I-85 back to my house in Duluth for some coffee and cuddling, he strongly insisted on being allowed to take me up the OLD DIRT ROAD instead.

Interstate traffic wasn’t even all that bad this morning because of ice.

Go figure.

The problem isn’t whether or not southerners can drive on snow/ice vs. northerners. The problem is that southern state highway depts. have absolutely no plan or clue about how to treat the roads. Very little plowing or salting. I laugh when I see a truck ‘sanding’ a road. That doesn’t work and is unheard of here in the midwest. So no wonder everyone panics, if they don’t do anything to the roads, I wouldn’t drive there either. You have to demand better from your local officials. In Chicago in the late 70’s, they didn’t get the roads plowed quickly enough after some big blizzards, and Mayor Bilandic was quickly voted out office. Ever since then, we have had a very sophisticated snow removal plan, and no one ever misses work, school, or panic buys. There are longer commutes if a storm hits during rush hour, but people get where they’re going.

Greetings from beautiful Yonah Mountain, near Cleveland (White County). Three to seven inches of snow fell in my yard this morning, depending on where I stuck the ruler. Took my two-year old daughter outside for her first experience with the white stuff … she did not last five minutes before shivering with cold! Enjoyed a wonderful day inside with the family, by the wood-burning fire, while eating French toast and bacon and sipping coffee. I am a teacher, and my wife works in Gainesville. I “forbid” her to leave the house today, lol. She was happy to oblige!
Praise be to the God of gods and the Lord of lords for blessing us with His blanket of wintery precipitation. May it be a reminder of the Blood … the Blood of CHRIST, that washes sinners even whiter than snow … AMEN!

To Darren in the Springs

I am from Ohio and I used to think that way. Ok first off, what Atlanta gets is usually not snow like what we see. It is pure ice. On the power lines, on the roads, pine trees snap knocking out power for days and at times weeks. Its not pretty and yes the city does close down. People die from this.

However, Atlanta is also always forcasting and it never happens. If it does come then most are un-prepared because they are always saying icy and it never happens. People tend to blow it off. I do it too.

So when you see Atlanta and ice, just remember, you are sitting in snow, we are not talking snow. We would all love to see some of your snow. Its beautiful. Ice is deadly.

It makes me crazy how upset peole get when a little snow is predicted. My family for one would love to see a big snow storm hit Atlanta. My kids were devastated this morning that there was rain and no snow. I wish the weather people wouldn’t make such a big deal out of a little wintry weather. If it had happened it was supposed to be less than a 12 hour event. Get over being scared of a snow storm and go out and make a snowman with your kids (if we ever get snow here).

Casey and Opps,

I grew up in Rome so I know what an ice storm is like. That is what we mostly got while I was growing up. All I was doing was providing input from another part of the country. I know fully well that Georgia is not prepared to handle any signigicant storm and that is why things there have to shut down. All you can do is wait for the stuff to melt. I remember when we would have a week off of school for some storms, only because the city had no plows.

You might think it is different out here but believe me there are not enough plows or personnel running them to get to everything. Over the last month I have seen 1 plow come by our house here. Keep in mind they do not use salt out here either. They spread sand/gravel instead. The snow here will eventually turn into ice.

I know exactly what everyone there is going through, and believe me I know ice is very dangerous.

Take care.

Arguing with a northerner about weather is a waste of type. The south does not keep as much winter equipment or supplies to handle snow or ice. It would be foolish to let it sit unused for years until the next event. It’s easier to take a day off, stay off the roads and stay safe. With Georgia weather it will be gone in a day or two anyway. Let it go.
