Delta takeover dropped

US Airways on Wednesday withdrew its $10 billion takeover bid for Delta Air Lines.

The US Airways decision clears the way for Delta management to continue its plan to emerge from bankruptcy this spring as an independent airline. A court hearing on Delta’s reorganization plan is set for Feb. 7 that could allow Delta to begin seeking creditors’ votes for its plan.

How do you feel about the news? WIll this help or hurt passengers at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport? What do you think this might mean for the future of Delta?

How do you cope with traffic?

Metro Atlanta has some of the nation’s worst bottlenecks. Our commute times are terrible.

And it’s taking longer to get to work: Traffic delays per driver have increased from 14 hours a year in 1982 to 67 hours a year in 2003, according to the latest figures available.

It’s not only long commutes over freeways, either. (Remember last week’s snarl?) Some of us have trouble getting out of their own neighborhoods or subdivisions and swear off left turns. Some just swear.

What do you do to cope?

Do you have any good tips to pass along?

What’s your worst bottleneck … and your best shortcut?

Derby winner Barbaro euthanized

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday after complications from his gruesome breakdown at last year’s Preakness, ending an eight-month ordeal that prompted an outpouring of support across the country.

Did his caretakers make the right decision in trying to repair Barbaro’s leg injury and save the horse? Or should they have euthanized the Derby winner after the painful injury last May?

Not the marrying kind anymore

You may now miss the bride.

For the first time in our history, according to recent Census data, 51 percent of women are living without a spouse; that’s up from only 35 percent in 1950. Unlike the days when Ozzie and Harriet were considered the model nuclear family, married couples have also become a minority.

What’s going on? Has the risk of divorce made some of us deathly afraid of walking down the aisle? Or are we simply starting to appreciate the unconventional joys of living in unwedded bliss? First-person stories in this week’s @issue section examine the issue from different perspectives.

Whether you’re single or married — or somewhere in between — what do you think of this development, and most of all, why are fewer people saying “I do” these days?

TWO OPINIONS:

Melody T. McCloud, a physician, says being a single woman and still looking beats being in an empty marriage.

Lyle V. Harris, an editorial writer at the AJC, says a single man in Atlanta has a decent chance of winning the dating lottery.

Is city of Dunwoody a good thing?

Two state lawmakers plan to introduce bills to incorporate Dunwoody.

If approved by the General Assembly, the measure could go to voters this summer, and the new city could be up and running by year’s end.

The effect on the rest of DeKalb is hotly debated. See our related story.

For one thing, the tax loss to DeKalb County is in question. It has been estimated at $4.5 million by a group advocating cityhood. The county says the cost is more like $15.5 million.

What do you think about Dunwoody cityhood? What are the pros and cons?

Best and worst of Globes fashion

The fashion staff compiled our thoughts on the best and worst of the red carpet.

WORST: Vanessa Williams: Talk about too much of a good thing. Had she lost the fur and the hair, that Carmen Marc Valvo gown would have stolen the show.

Jennifer Love Hewitt: She has outgrown the prom queen look. This dress was the wrong color, the fit was off and it was too busy for this pretty actress to carry off.

Cameron Diaz: This is not the dress to impress her recent ex (Justin Timberlake). Really, it’s awful.

Rinko Kikuchi: Boudoir couture, courtesy of (believe it or not) Chanel.

Jeremy Irons: The long jacket, the off-white shirt, the set of matched luggage under his eyes … what a mess.

BEST: America Ferrera: She was the epitome of beauty. From the smile to the gorgeous amethyst gown.

Drew Barrymore: Sometimes criticism pays off. Last year, Barrymore was a green disaster. This time, not so much. The pink gown accentuated her curves perfectly.

Jennifer Hudson: This not-so-basic black Vera Wang gown got plenty of screen time. Hudson glowed, before and after picking up a well-deserved trophy.

Patrick Dempsey: Some guys get better with age. Some guys look like they were born to wear a tuxedo. Fortunately for us, Dempsey falls into both categories.

Now it’s your turn. Check out the gallery of our best and worst and then decide. Whose outfit did you hate? Whose gown did you love?

Golden Globes fashion

Fashion missteps were few and far between during the 64th annual Golden Globe Awards Monday night on NBC. Here are a few of the trends that prevailed on the red carpet:

Grecian goddesses: Stars wore gowns that gathered gracefully in all the right places, with flowing locks to match. Hayden Panettiere and Ali Larter of “Heroes,” Jennifer Lopez, and the ethereal Angelina Jolie (“The Good German”) opted for this flattering look.

Screen gems: Forget the bling, jewel tones — from Sara Ramirez of “Grey’s Anatomy” in ruby red to Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“The New Adventures of Old Christine”) in sassy citrine — stars embraced color with a vengeance. But Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) in blue topaz, stood out as our favorite gem of the night, thanks to her precious jewel-shaped clutch. But they weren’t the only ones. Renee Zellweger (“Miss Potter”) wore emerald green and Ashley Jensen (“Ugly Betty”) chose garnet, while and singer Sheryl Crow and America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) shined in deep amethyst.

White out: What better way to flaunt a flawless spray-on tan than with a bright, white gown? We counted no fewer than nine ladies who banked on white to capture screen time on the red carpet. Notables included Heidi Klum (“Project Runway”), Panettiere and Mary Lynn Rajskub (“24), Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy”), and Terri Hatcher (“Desperate Housewives”).

Buttons and bows: What’s a fashion wrap-up without the fellas? This year, more actors took the black tie route, with dashing results. Favorites included Ricardo Chavira and James Denton (“Desperate Housewives”), George Clooney (“The Good German”), Aaron Eckhart (“Thank You for Smoking”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Departed”), Terrence Howard (“Idlewild,”) and Josh Holloway (“Lost), who managed to make the scruffy beard work.
