What are some other hazardous intersections that didn’t make the Top 10 list?

14th Street in midtown!! Between the park and Juniper. Lots of people have no idea where they are going that usually have a wreck. Just walking around the area and watching people drive just amazes me and what some of them do or don’t know what they are doing.

Moreland and Hosea Williams in Edgewood. Road crews clean up shattered glass one day, and the next the road is littered with crash remains again. There needs to be a left turn light on Moreland southbound.

What do the top three intersections all have in common? They are all on the same road. Barrett becomes East-West Connector. When this road was built it was designed as a limited access road. The Cobb County Commissioners “sold” it as a limited access road. Now, just about anyone with enough money can get direct acccess to this road. In just the three years since it’s completion the number of traffic lights has quadrupled and more are going up every month. Lesson #1: Don’t believe the politicians pitching this. It only represents a means to more power to them. Lesson #2: Don’t underbuild capacity. They built this road to accommodate existing populations with almost no thought of growth.

Intersections don’t cause wrecks; bad drivers cause wrecks. Most of the intersections listed, and certainly those on the top of the list, all have well-marked, easy-to-use traffic lights. The fact that some drivers take it upon themselves to unsafely turn left or run a light doesn’t mean its an unsafe road or intersection. It means there are self-centered drivers out there who shouldn’t be allowed on the road in the first place. (Just my opinion).

La Vista Road and North Druid Hills Road at Toco Hills in DeKalb Co. La Vista is bending there slightly, and sloping down both ways from the intersections. This causes problems for left-turning drivers on La Vista who need to be extra careful there. I see accidents there at least once per week. Sadly, some of the accidents are caused by drivers turning left from North Druid Hills and slamming into vehicles standing in the left lane of La Vista. There’s absolutely no excuse for that.

Oh man- I can’t believe that the intersection of Briarcliff and North Druid Hills in DeKalb is not on this list. I see a near miss there almost every day.

Just this morning, ANOTHER wreck on Graves Road in Norcross. It’s at least a monthly thing, if not weekly. This morning it was a 4-car pile-up with injuries…and it only took 45 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. I’ve complained to Police, DOT, etc. by phone, e-mail, and snail mail. We get empty promises about what they are going to do.

Stinky Sullivan, get a grip ! It was not you they were staring at that caused the wreck, it was me, Cassanova.

Another death spot on N. Druid Hills—-the intersection at Lawrenceville hwy. People come flying off of 78 and t-bone cars. And like the LaVista intersection, terrain is a factor. there are hills on three sides, so people are speeding like maniacs.

Since traffic is so heavy on N. Druid Hills, the Lawrenceville hwy traffic light is very short. This leads to a lot of people running it, because it’s frustrating to have a ten-second light and a few hundred cars.

The reason that intersection at Austell and East-West is number one is because the green light lasts about 15 seconds, then changes yellow. Because the green light only lets a few cars through before changing yellow, people get frustrated and feel like they should have been able to get through that cycle, thus they run the yellow light. It’s ultimately the person’s fault who runs the yellow, but Cobb DOT could lengthen the duration the light stays green, and then people wouldn’t be rushing through the yellow light.

Too much attention has been paid to making the roads “easy” to drive, which does not make them safer. In fact, drivers become more careful and safer when they’re not treated like children.

We need to complete the streets!

That completing the street thing looks interesting. But I seem to recall the DOT discussing using the breakdown lanes as regular travel lanes. What a bunch of yahoos.

Over 40,000 people die every year in car accidents in this country. We need to start a war to avenge the senseless deaths of these innocent people.

The intersection @ Fulton Industrial & Camp Creek by the QT truck stop. First of all the truckers should not be allowed to cross where there is no light. They should exit out of the back of the truck stop. On top of that you’ve got crazy people flying down the road to go nowhere. If they had any since they would not rush to get home rather slow down so they will make it there safely.

Message to Nan, who posted above. One could safely bet that there are bad drivers everywhere. Why then would certain intersections have more, many more, crashes than others? All intersections, all human-made things, are not created equally. Bad design can have serious consequences.
