A new plate for Georgia

plate

Georgia license plates are about to get a whole lot more colorful.

Department of Revenue Commissioner Bart Graham said Thursday he is preparing to roll out new blue, gold and white license plates next spring that eventually will be on the back sides of more than 5 million Georgia cars.

“Georgia on My Mind” and county names are gone.

What do you think of the new design?

wow, that’s the ugliest plate we’ve had in the last 10-15 years, and that’s saying a lot. I keep hoping we’ll get a better design, but just like the flag, it keeps getting uglier and uglier.

“Georgia On My Mind” is a well-known slogan that the Tourism Industry (one of our largest industries) worked hard to establish. To get rid of it now is a stupid move. I also like having the county’s name on the tag. When we are traveling, we can see if our county neighbors are traveling with us from Ga. “If it ain’t fixed, don’t break it”. I’m getting the Bicycle “Share the Road” tag anyway.

To make things even more interesting…why don’t we give the Democrats the “flashy new blue” tags and let the Republicans keep the “classic white peach” tags. That would be so much fun - don’t ya think?

For us fashion conscience people..a neutral color is better. I prefer the white and peach..it goes with black, white, cream, blue, green, purple…cars. Obviously Mr. Graham did not consult a color coordinating expert!

I agree with those that feel the new tag design is ugly. I like the “happy” feel of the colors on the current tag—the blue—it’s a bit dull, unattractive and sure to clash with many car colors.

Glad to know that now that we have a surplus that we’re not going to blow it on stupid things like new plates. As we found out when the last set of new plates came out, it is expensive to get them on all the cars in the state. That’s why for the first time everyone wasn’t forced to get the new plates when they renewed.

I almost liked it until I read the comments here. At first the blue looked kind of nice, but I wasn’t thinking of how a dark blue plate would clash with the car paint when it is not black, white, or blue. I guess the county tells other Georgians how rich, backwoods, or gettho the occupants are. I am from Clayton County and I “love it” when others (mistakenly) think I could be dangerous or don’t make good money or have a good education.

These license plates look terrible! One of the things I’ve always liked about Georgia plates is the white background, which does not clash with cars as much as a dominant dark color does. And why remove the county names and “Georgia on My Mind” slogan? Those added a unique touch to Georgia’s plates. These are boring, mundane, rediculous plates that remind me of Michigan, Delaware or Connecticut. Please bring back our classic white plates, with the peach accents, with county names, and with our state slogan.

The new tag reminds me of Michigans tag which I have always considered Drab and boring. I like our previous white tag with the peach, that design describes Georgia. I think new designs are good, however changing the tag, when so many did not agree with the new flag is bad timing. I do not think the commissioner captured the essence of Georgia with this design. The peach captures a happy feeling, I am proud when Im traveling thru other states and I know fellow travelers see my plate. Well this is my opinion and you know what they say, everyone has one. The Sarge!

I think the design should reflect the state. First, the background should be red, not blue, for all the rednecks and the Republicans. The most appropiate color would be blood red. Also, there should be a black ‘X’ on the plate to for all the racists in the state. The state name should be misspelled to honor our great educational system. Finally, I suggest the following for a state motto: We’re 46th! If you’re gay/Mexican/Muslim/Liberal STAY AWAY! (Custom plate) Where Regression is Progress. We Shoot First Because Dead People Can’t Defend Themselves You Better Be A God-fearing Christian Or Else

First, I always liked the Georgia plate that said “Georgia on my mind” “and wildflowers in my heart”, with the daisy on it and thought I’d pay the extra money to purchase one when I got a new car. Then when it was time for me to purchase a new tag, the state went and changed the top of the plates to say “www.georgia.gov” and the rest still says “wildflowers in my heart”, which in my opinion looks ridiculous and makes no sense at all!

Now, we’ll get away from anything creative and change to this new drab, ugly one? Well, I hope they only issue them with new purchases. I just got a new car, and I’ll drive it for 10 years!! Hopefully, these news one will go out of style by then!

As a Georgia license plate collector, this new design is akin to New Coke. It does away with everything Georgia license plate TRADITION, most notably the county names. Also, the letter/number style is new. And blue background - you have to be kidding me! Maybe the worst part is the flat plat - is it going to be * CHEAP PLASTIC* like Tennessee’s plate??? I know this isn’t a big deal to most people, but it’s like a knife in the heart to a few of us. If anything, go with the white background, blue digits for general issue and PUT THE COUNTIES BACK ON IT!!!

Sickening! Horrid! Ugly! Ridiculous! Unacceptable! Unnecessary! Embarrassing!

Keep the counties. I like knowing who is “from around here” and who is from the ATL and who is from the wide open fields of South GA.

“Georgia On My Mind” says it all. Were the new plates designed by a dadgum yankee transplant? Probably.

I drive a silver car, with a UGA specialty tag, accented by a red “G” tag on the front and red flags and magnets during football season. No way I’m putting an ugly, yankee-blue, sorry tag on MY car!

The four primary colors for any UGA car include: red, black, white, or silver. Any other color clashes with the greatest colors known to man: Red and Black! You can’t put a “G” tag on any other color … it just doesn’t fit!

To those who designed the new yankee-blue tag: forget it! I’m keeping my UGA specialty tag. And if y’all try to mess with THAT, you will have a mutiny on your hands.

Georgia fans from Rabun Gap to Tybee Light, and all points in between, will march on the Capitol so fast y’all won’t know what happened.

GO DAWGS! Sic’em! Woof Woof Woof!

Georgia continues to set itself apart from the more civilized states (NC, VA,FL,etc) with this new license plate. They should have hired a leading design firm to assist in what will represent the state for years to come. Also the new plate won’t be embossed, so it’s much easier for someone to alter the letters and numbers if they were evading police. The overhead signs on the interstates use that awful narrow typeface; ever noticed the Georgia welcome signs at state borders and the airport? The type is outlined, uses an inappropriate font and looks likes someone put it together in Powerpoint in 10 minutes.

I think this blue tag is the wrong color and it is ugly. Why not do like the state of Florida and offer a variety of beautiful tags for Georgian’s to choose from. Or if this cannot be done bring back the old peach colored tag in 1992. Also, hire a design team to design tags instead of some office staff with bad taste.

And they only tell us about it when its too late to do anything about it.

They had a contest for people to design the dog/cat control tags. Why not let the fine citizens of the state contribute?

To the Georgia fan that said “woof woof woof”: how sad that you think you are a dog. Grow up.

To the Tech fans: I just checked my class ring, and Georgia Tech’s seal contains the arch as well. The Arch is a symbol of the state, not of a single school.

That said, I like the new tag, EXCEPT for the lack of the county name. I too like to see what counties people are from. Enough people don’t know the names of all 159 counties already.

I can understand people wanting a more neutral tag or wanting to see the counties, but I really can’t see how people think this tag is ugly compared to the peach tags. Are you serious? At least these tags have a little class. They’re much better looking.

Good grief, what the heck has happened to Georgia? First, you all want to sell the naming rights of the Georgia Dome? Now this ugly plate that looks like it’s from the brillant minds of Alaska.

Instead of georgia.gov, how about georgia on my mind… I think of that, and the great peaches and wonderful congestion on the runway at ATL airport on Friday afternoons.

OK, I like the flag idea, but lose the .gov - that was so three years ago. Also, keep the counties and reverse the colors. To keep the peach crowd happy, make the O in Georgia the peach (since the .gov needs to go).

There - that’ll work.

It’s UGA- ly!!! Fails to convey the warm charm of our state. The plate looks more like something that would be used in the New England/Maryland area. “Georgia on My Mind” and “the Peach” did a much better job of characterizing Georgia.

it is painfully evident that mr. graham and staff did not consult with a professionally trained and experienced designer on this one - someone who has a clue about branding. don’t mind the blue so much but the use of the detailed seal is so stale and cliche. doesn’t look like much thought went into this at all. once again our great state is branded as stoic and old-fashioned. not a good way millions for cars to represent a state that should aim to be progressive and looking toward the future. also, i rather liked the counties on the old tags too. really wish a fresher, simpler, more originial approach had been taken. tiny text and detailed graphics do not belong on a flag or tag! “simpify, simplify, simplify” and consult with someone who knows how design works.

I just changed my mind anout the plate. At first I thought it would be OK to have it if they kept the county sticker on it. However, after the most obvious fault in the plate design was raised…it appears that I will not be able to place a Yankee Blue plate on my car. How about giving us Southerners the grey plate, and make the Yankees pay an extra $100 for a Blue one?

I’d actually like a combination of the previous 3 plates — “Georgia On My Mind” on the top, the current peach/state outline and the peach colored bottom that was on the plate back in the early 90s where the county decal goes. GET RID OF THE STUPID WEBSITE. I’M NOT PAYING TO ADVERTISE WEBSITES!!!!

By Ernie

I wonder why this is only one corner reserved for a sticker when I thought you would need a month and year places — one on each side. The balance is futher thrown off by the “.gov” tackly attached on the right after carefully centering Georgia. Drop the .gov, I think we all can manage to do a search for a “georgia goverment” quicker than we can walk to our cars to figure it out if did forget. The county names are helpful to spot your tourists and out-of-towners or to verify that the bad driver that almost rear ended you is from the Atlanta metro. And the most obvious thing — sure does look like that Barnes’ rag we were sentenced to fly for a few years. Maybe that is part of the reason there are so many comments that it looks ugly. Besides this color blue mostly brings to mind South Carolina (think about the flag) and not associated with Georgia.

By Robert

September 15, 2006 10:24 AM | Link to this

I don’t care for the new design. What problem was being corrected? Why would they even consider removing the county? I see that as another way of identification in case of need. When tax payers money is being spent, it should be for productive reasons that solved needed problems. I doubt if this one makes the cut for a priority when considering the expenses for consulting, design, retooling and production. Individuals at all levels of government, local, state and federal, need to be more fiscally responsible. Spend the money like it is coming our of their pocket and things will change.

I purchased the plate for my alumni to help my college and more so because I absolutely refused to continue driving around with that old washed up white tag w/the large orange peach. I wish the Nation would go back to ONE tag design per state. It makes it so much easier and more interesting when you know where somebody is from with a visual cue only. The number of comments on this subject is very telling…people don’t like change and they hate having someone else dictate what goes on their property.

The new tags are bad - the poor design is highlighted by the horrible color.

My daughter went to college “up North” and when someone asked her about the HENRY on her tag she said that was its name - and of course, her car is now Henry to all of her friends.

I suggest that we all save our county stickers and place them on our new tags…then we can continue to see what car is from a different area of the state and give them a friendly wave or a little extra room on the freeway.

But I’m afraid that like many other posters, this will drive us to paying more for an alternate plate…another “hidden” tax.

I think the thing I like best is that it is a major change. We needed a different color background. Blue is nice. I’m so glad that the county tag is gone. I’m also glad that the www is gone too. They could have left the .gov off as well and made the O in Georgia the peach like they did in the early 90’s.

This has got to be the ugliest and most boring tag I have ever seen. When Barnes changed the State flag behind our back and tried to shove it down our throats it was amazing how it was voted the ugliest state flag by a flag design group who could have cared less about the politics surrounding it. Now we have a Yankee-fied tag with a blue field just like that ugly flag. It’s embarrassing to me as a Georgian and as a designer and artist to see my home state be reflected in such bad taste. It is just about as embarrassing as when the “what iz it” creature was introduced to the world as the Olympic mascot for the Atlanta Olympic Games. I wanted to crawl in a hole somewher on that one. Why are we continued to be embarrassed by poor designs which are supposed to reflect the beauty and integrity of our state. I like the county names and knowing where people are from and the theme is Georgia’s and should stay permanently on the tag. Why can’t we have a pretty tag like Kentucky that reflects state pride instead of something so plain, ugly and federal looking.

I think Tennessee’s new plates are great (and they aren’t plastic, they are metal. There’s no longer a need to raise the lettering).

I think this plate is ridiculoulsly ugly (of all the states to rip off, why Michigan because that’s what this plate looks like). And why not list the registered county? IT shows some kind of civic pride.

If they keep these plates, at least give the regular folks the white one.

What has happened to our minds? The new tag looks too “government official.” Please DO NOT do this to us as citizens of the State of Georgia. And, why leave the county off the tags?

How can they say this license plate is classy?

The classiest license plate ever was the ‘97 GEORGIA ON MY MIND plate. Great saying everyone knows with a very simple design — white plate with black font and a subtle peach in the background. Can we please bring back that plate, just with new letter/number combinations?

I hate it. It is boring and fails to point to any identifiable feature of the state of Georgia. With the dropping of “Georgia on my mind” and county title, virtually nothing comes to mind about our state. The plate is probably borne out of the mind of some diversity sensitive, PC dis-oriented, whining liberal that wants us all to melt into one village.

What happened to the simple, elegant peach? That blue is horrible and the state seal is boring. They should give the blue plates to government and the white ones to the public. Better yet, hold a statewide contest for a new design. I’d always admired Georgia’s plates even before I moved here. The raised/punched lettering should not go away either. Well, the plate looks like the one you see from the northern state. The color doesn’t matter, the contrast is important, so it can be easy seen on photos. Intresting is the “footnote” this plate can include a barcode for the police to scan the plate. Intresting isn’t! The design we talk about doesn’t concern anybody in the goverment, the easy scanning and photo display is important.

I think the tag is OK, but the county needs to be displayed. It’s always kind of fun when you are several states away to see another local car. Besides, it can also help catch tax avoiders who actually live in a county with a higher vehicle tax but register the car to a small piece of land they own in a low vehicle tax locale.

OK, I’ll throw my two cents in. I hate the new plate too, but if they’re going to change anyway, at least give citizens the white background with blue lettered one - it’s the less obnoxious of the two. Georgia.gov says nothing about the state - they should have kept Georgia On My Mind. And yes, they should have kept the county names as well. I don’t understand why the state doesn’t ask for ideas from the citizenry before embarking on changes such as this.

This is an advertising boost for specialty tags, so you can get something you like but must pay an additional cost. More revenue? Another ripoff scheme from the people whose salaries we already pay. What happened to the movement to eliminate the advalorem tax? We should choose a tag design in a referendum vote, not have someone else wave their choice in our face with no alternative…

Considering how poorly this plate is being received in this AJC blog, good luck selling it to the rest of the state. They’re not going to like the blue or absence of counties.

First off, we have the right to complain; it is our constitutional right to disagree. Secondly, they asked for our opinion. Now, the question is: Did they really want to know?, so perhaps they could change their minds, or do they just enjoy sitting back and laughing at the public, whom they have played like pawns in a Chess game? You know, this is how it’s going to be, we thought we’d just let you have your say and get it over with. So here’s my opinion right or wrong, it is just an opinion, I like the plate I have now. I thought the two-tone look was classy, and I really like the “Georgia on my Mind” slogan. So, when do I pick up my new plate?

This tag is so sad. CLEARLY… someone left the creative juice in the refrigerator when they came up with this design. This tag is along the lines of the crappy green one we used to have back in the day. If I complain, I need a solution… So my solution is for them to create a FEW tags and allow the citizens of Georgia to vote on the one WE like most. Hopefully someone who can do something about the problem looks at these comments! I have a BEAUTIFUL educator tag and I SURELY don’t want to give it up for something that looks like that!

Sonny needs to get rid of the guy that designed that thing. That is terrible. White letters on blue sheet metal shows a complete lack of imagination and creativity. Why are we wasting taxpayer money again - the old plate is much better. Whoever designed this mess needs to try again or be fired.

I guess with all these “blue tag Yankees” moving down here, it was a matter of time before their tags made it.

The only redeeming quality they have is the seal with my UGA Arch. That’ll make the Techies mad.

In short- they’re hideous. And I dont particularly like the barcode idea either- Shades of Big Brother Sonny.

I seriously hope the UGA/college/specialty tags wont be this color. It’s like when Kentucky had that smiling sun on their tags-the people hated it.

LOVE IT! The new plate is Classic and Regal. I have been proud, too, of the Wildlife tags (eagle & flag) which are great looking and patriotic.

BRILLIANT IDEA to ad the bar codes to the new plates so that police can retrieve instant information.

Too bad there are so many cry-babies posting scorching, negative blogs about every inconsequential thing. Get some perspective. (If you malign this blog - then you know who you are…)

What an ugly and unnecessary change! Because when everybody hated this same design on that hideous attempt at a state flag, they thought it would be a good idea to put it on our cars instead? The county idea was nice to have. And the neutral colors and PEACH on the current tags are much more acceptable. If you’re going to make changes, they should be improvements.

Why not put images of ol’ Sonny, Linda Schrenko, Ralph Reed, etc, and the rest of the Republicans who have ruined this state and country on the tag. Georgia has such a fine reputation since the GOP took over. That way the rest of the states can know who is responsible for making Georgia worst. I am glad it is not white and I am glad to see the Peach gone - too blah! I like the Blue. Why some of you think it won’t match all car colors, when dark blue is almost like black in that it will look good with most car colors. Blue/Silver, Blue/gray, Blue/Red, Blue/White, Blue/Black, Blue/Green and even blue and brown won’t be that bad. The only comment I really agree 100% with is the County names. I do like to see those. I can’t believe they would not want that on there. Other than that, I like it.

By Dennis

September 15, 2006 01:15 PM | Link to this

That’s about the ugliest tag I’ve ever seen. It’s boring and not very imaginative. It bears no resemblance to anything pertaining to Georgia except it’s likeness to our state flag, which is also quite ugly. It doesn’t appear to be embossed which would make it very easy to alter. Come on people, my six year old granddaughter could have done better. Lose the web site and keep the county designations. It’s abundantly clear that production cost was foremost in this design process and that state pride has never been a consideration. If you are going to make me spend another twenty bucks per vehicle for tags make them something that I would be proud to display on my vehicle. There must be a LARGE supply of that ugly blue paint and I suggest that it might look good on those big chicken houses you see everywhere. The awful color on the outside would go well with the foul odor emanating from the inside.

How horrible! It gives the impression that all Georgians are stiff necked, formal, rigid, narcissistic politians. It doesn’t reflect the diverse flavor of Georgia. So, keep the peach, the white background and “Georgia on My Mind”. Counties information promotes discrimination among police and some drivers.

This should be an optional tag for the few who do like it. Personally, I think it is hideous. There definitely should have been citizen input for the design of a new tag. Maybe some middle/high school art classes could have designed it. We would have gotten a lot more creativity. This looks like exactly what it is….governmental!

I didn’t the entire article, seeing the picture of the tag was enough to make me have an opinion…if the state wants to make money, why don’t they allow out of state college be on license plates? One year I saw a Georgia Tech insignia on a Virginia Tag.

Look to Florida for ideas on revenue generation with license plates - there are more varieties of plates than from any other state.

What a differnce 65 years makes! The 1941 GA plate is considered by most collectors as the best U.S. plate ever, with its reflectorized yellow serial separated by a large peach decal, all on a dark blue background, it was the first general issue plate to incorporate those features. It is highly unlikely a bureaucrat designed it! Come on, Sonny, back to the drawing board, or better yet, hold a state-wide competition. Let Georgia´s citizens decide.

Without counties on the tags, how can kids ask their parents, “Mom, where’s Butts County?” “Where’s Screven County?” Like another comment I read, it helps drivers to know our own state better. Plus, we can road rage so much better at Gwinnetians and Cobb Snobs if we see where they’re from. :) Put the counties back on the tags — even if they are blue and won’t match anyone’s cars!

I don’t love the tag, but I’m glad it’s finally not peachy. I have the wildflower tag, which I like. I’d love that tag if it didn’t say “wildflowers in my ”.

I’d love more varieties. The spay/neuter tag is super-stupid looking. I’d like a tag highlighting some of these things: Chatt. River, Na Ga Mtns, Coastal Ga, Stone Mtn, Pines, Flowers (Azalea?), or diversity.

The new tags are absolutely hideous. The dark blue color will look TERRIBLE on most vehicles! You need to stick with a neutral color of some sort with a light graphic background (like what we’ve currently got). That will match most any vehicle and not look like a sore thumb.

Have you considered getting an actual graphic designer that understands how colors coordinate with each other to help before you force all GA vehicle owners to put this on the back of their cars? Please spend some of our surplus to have an actual expert work with you before you ram your grotesque idea down our throats, at least.

On another note… why lose the “county”? This is a very important piece of very useful information that SHOULD be on everyone’s tag. Why lose that?

Although I am torn about not having the county on my tag. I am from Fayetteville and when people see Fayette on my tag they assume I have money and I just hate it. On the other hand I want to be able to see when a Clayton, Fulton, or Henry County is driving in Fayetteville so I can call the PO PO and turn them in…. Overall the tag is ugly and I might have to buy a specialty tag…… Also it reminds me of UGA which sucks by the way… GO VOLS!!

I much prefer the old plate. I live in New Hampshire, but I’ve traveled in Georgia and loved it; whenever I see the peach on your current plates, it brings back very fond memories. Naming the county was a nice touch, too; since it was a conversation starter among you, at home or away, why not keep it? And that “.gov”, with the leafy peach, is hard to read at a distance. Finally…I wish we had something as sweet and memorable as “Georgia on my mind” on our NH plates; “Live Free or Die” can sound awfully belligerent to people who don’t know the history of the slogan. My vote, for what it’s worth, is to keep the old plate.

Why did the state spend money on this? At least the 1970 plate said ‘Peach State’ I believe. The plate before last, with the cool peach (my husband calls this one, so unfortunatly retained on the’gov’of this design, the peach-butt) and the copperplate gothic GEORGIA was the best. May I buy a GA Bicentennial plate off ebay and use it? No, because I have been exiled to FL, which has already set the unfortunate trend of taking the best plate design and motto (mid seventies w/the orange and the great mottos ‘Sunshine State’ or alternatly ‘Arrive Alive’)and d-signing every bit of interest out AND committing the HERESY of taking off the COUNTIES! Does posting our opinion do any good?

If the state really cares what the citizens of GA think about the way their tax funded vehicle tags look like, why not have an online poll with 6 different designs to pick from and eliminate down to a winner? Come to think of it, something like that might even work for political candidates as well!

For this record, I do not like the new design, and losing the county ID is defintely a bad move. Bring back the 1997 tag.

Yet another example of the Republican Ready, Fire, Aim method of doing business. Try asking the people who pay the bills, the taxpayers, before launching these half baked ideas if you really expect them to keep picking up the check. It may be easier for law enforcement to see the tag numbers but we have now paid for a disadvantage for ourselves since they will not be able to easily distinguish us from the snowbirds.

I’m a transplanted Yankee (30+ years as a Georgia resident) who thinks the proposed new design is ugly and boring. It looks like something the federal government would issue. When I travel I like seeing tags with creativity that reflect the “unique personality” of the different states – like several of the Florida tags. What ever happened to Georgia’s state pride? If you’re going to make changes, they should be improvements. What’s wrong with the “Georgia on My Mind” slogan? Also, I wish they would leave the counties. I enjoy seeing where the people are from, and probably cuts down on people registering cars in counties where they do not legally reside to save paying higher taxes where they do actually live.

The only part that I like about the changes is that the www is gone. Rather pointless – anyone with any computer savvy can find out how to get Georgia info without that prompt on the tag. (They should also have left off the .gov.) It almost seems like the state revenue department has come up with a scheme to encourage people to buy vanity plates!

Also, I do not like the barcode idea – “Shades of Big Brother” – there’s too much of our personal info being disseminated without our knowledge or permission now. Why add to that situation?

All in all, why are we wasting taxpayer money again? I would rather see state money used for something other than redesigning something that didn’t need fixing. I know some expensive designer (with political connections –probably a cousin of Sonny’s) has already been paid and no matter how ugly or unpopular it is, we will be getting this tag.

For those who say we shouldn’t spend the time to complain about something as mundane as our license tags – I’ve never blogged before – too busy – but couldn’t resist this! (And don’t worry, it won’t cause me to have a stroke or coronary!) Also, I’m glad to see that most of the people who are responding agree with my feelings about the new design. But I can’t believe the mean spiritedness of some of you out there – it’s one thing to disagree with someone’s views – but nastiness, name calling and outright threats to swerve and hit someone are a bit much! Grow up!

“It is Time for a Better New Tag Design” The design is certainly clean and maybe the blue paint chosen offers an advantage when viewed through traffic cameras. Blue plates will clash with many paint colors and auto owners are very fussy about their choices. At very low unit cost, the latest generation of lower cost ‘RFID’ tags should be embedded in all new auto-tags. With a high-speed InterSystems-Cache sql-database, the elapsed time between ITZ~ChronStamps could be compared with a normal time range between two readers. A simple algorithm backed up by a synchronized digital photo with the logged ITZ~CS’s confirming the speed between any two readers buried in the road, could be used to issue tickets automatically. The Cache database could instantly provide vehicle and owner identification. With ‘readers’ placed in the roadway, authorities could also electronically shadow a criminal suspect or suspected terrorist. Of course, when your car passes over an RFID-reader, you could be alerted to that fact, so you could SLOW DOWN! Even though I like the blue they have chosen, I would prefer neutral colors that do not ‘crash’ with the car color. I might be wrong, but personally, it seems to me that high-contrast combinations, such as Black characters on a white or yellow background - or possibly White or yellow characters on a black background would offer better recognition by human eyes, laser and graphic recognition systems. RFID readers could also issue road hazard alerts to cars equipped to respond to them. Copyright 20060915 by Don Wagner, All Rights Reserved.

Although I would prefer a more neutral color, I guess blue’s not too bad. As I mentioned earlier though, the website must go. If the state wishes to pay me I wouldn’t mind having it there, but not the other way around. Second, Georgia on my mind should be there and the peach much more prominant than the proposal. Finally, definitly keep the county decals.

What a complete and total waste of money, time and energy.

Also, if I have to give up my “Spay Neuter” Tag and my “Wildlife” tag, I am going to be furious.

Just when I had tags I liked and could be proud of, some IDIOT with too much time on his/her/its hands comes along with this ridiculous waste of money.

This is, hands down, THE ugliest license plate I have EVER seen in my life, and I absolutely hate not knowing what county people are from. I cut people a lot of slack if I think they are from out of town when they do something stupid while driving and cutting me off in traffic.

Whose moronic idea is this anyway? and, more importantly than “who?” - - - WHY?

Do we have any recourse?

I just got my “georgia.gov” plate last week, after having had the white one forever. And now another new “plate” next year? Why does our government feel the need to spend money on something like this when our education system is in such a state of disarray that Georgia is the laughing stock of the nation (if not the world). Keep the old plates and put the millions of dollars probably already wasted on this project to good use by spending it on schools so our children can actually receive an education.

  • For those who are worried, the county will still be displayed on every tag although it might not be across the bottom as it has been.

I wish everyone could get this rattled about our bringing up the rear in education. What color or design of the tag is not important. Getting rid of the tag taxes is! What is on the tag or flag is not important. Looking at the crime rate in Georgia is! What color the tag is is not important. When can we get a break on the cost of the war and gas is the issue we need to face. Once again Georgian are not trying to keep their eye on the prize! Here again I forgot why we are ranked in the bottom tier of education.

The purpose of license plates is to indicate registration. Police officers can run tag numbers and determine whether or not a vehicle is insured and if the registration is valid. I pay my taxes and pay my registration and I want those who don’t to be cited and their cars towed if appropriate. These awful tags will make it harder for the police to do their job. The current tags are difficult enough to read (try distinguishing between the M and W or the Q and O at a distance). Plates serve a legal purpose and should be designed with that in mind. Plus I like the county decals on the current tags.

I like the new plate. The peach was too “cuties” and “girlie”. The dark color with the white letters will make it easier for the police to read. Looks clean somewhate diplomatic or as someone else wrote “formal”. As to the blue clashing with your car or suv, when did a license plate have to be a fashion statement?

Plates server a purpose other than declaring your affiliations or being a fashion accessory. I can understand having the counties but otherwise there is too much clutter - think “Keep it Simple Stupid”.

Blue, white, and gold? The new tag design is hiddeous. Also, Georgia was one of the first states to include the counties on the tag so why are we mimicking designs from the majority of states that do not include counties on the tags? Lets stick to our roots; however, if the state wants to imitate other states, why not add a second tag to each car? One for the front and one for the back. Finally, the peach should definately be the highlight of our new tag, hands-down!

By Craig

September 15, 2006 10:28 PM | Link to this

The new tag does not relate well to Georgia. Being a recent transplant to the area, the current plate fits the state as a whole. Listing the county also adds a nice touch and appears to be a southern tradition such as the plates of our neighbor states. They need to keep the peach predominent on the plate. It is the core to this state. A plate with a white background keeps in neutral. The last two plates are great, simple, and expressive to this state. There should be no need to replace the current plate. The blue plates remind me of plates in the “rust belt” states and the gives you the image of a dirty state with a declining economic base. Georgia needs to stick to its roots and keep the plates in line with Georgia…a strong, growing, economic power of the southeast.

I do miss seeing Georgia on my mind on the plates. A state should never turn away a song that is well liked accross the country, especially at a time they are trying to get more tourist dollars in.

Basically, keep the current plate and focus the state’s attention of the traffic problems that face Atlanta and the surrounding counties, not what each vehicle registered in this state has on its rear.

The new tag is ugly as a pig’s behind. Whoever designed this tag should be fired immediately. Georgia is changing. While many hillbillies and others are emourning the loss of the Scarlett O’Hara era, get over it! Georgia is now home to people from various backgrounds and outlooks, and our state has one of the Country’s most important cities as its capitol. We need to start thinking more mature and cosmopolitan lest the world continue to view us as diminished thinkers and backwoods country folk who ride in beat up pick up trucks and kill our own food.

I am no fan of this new design either. But as a native Michigander, I am offended by those who characterize the plates of my home state as boring. For those of you who are unaware, the blue represents the majestic beauty of The Great Lakes and the crisp white lettering (“Winter Wonderland”, “Great Lakes”) was enduring and classic. No need to dress up the plates with graphics and symbols. Unlike Georgia tags of ANY year, Michigan tags are recognizable throughout this country of ours and to me were a great pride when I saw them on cars in far off places. Occassionally people would ask me where in Connecticut I was from, but otherwise they were in keeping with our identity. Georgia should do the same.

Even though blue is my favorite color, I hate it. It’s too somber, too official. The tag line at the top is not centered left to right and it’s also not offset in a way that is graphically pleasing or intentional. It simply looks like the designer ran out of room. The “.gov” has got to go. I feel very strongly about this. As I believe another commenter said, it’s so 2003. We get it, officials, you’re hip and with it. But is the ad on our tags really necessary? It’s just a waste of space. Won’t a simple search do? I don’t remember ever seeing phone numbers on tags before the spread of the internet.

Is that the most neutral color they could come up with? The tag color should look decent with as many vehicles on the road as possible (considering that silver, black, and white are the most popular colors).

The standard issue blue MI tag has been around since 1982 and newer designs didn’t start showing up until just a few years ago - that says something about enduring design. I am not sure why you’re whining though. The powers that be will probably keep the current design of the mutt plate.

i DO NOT LIKE THIS NEW LISCENCE PLATE. i REALLY DO LIKE THE GEORGIA ON MY MIND PLATES.. IT JUST GIVES A WARM FEELING TO SEE THAT ON LISC PLATES .. AS WELL AS THE WELCOME TO GEORGIA SIGN AT THE STATE LINE COMING IN TO GEORGIA .. KEEPING THE GEORGIA ON MY MIND PLATES REINFORCES THE WELCOME TO GEORGIA ..
IN VIRGINIA .. THERE ARE MANY CHOICES FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THAT STATE .. FROM JAMESTOWN PLATES (THE 3 SHIPS ON THEM) ..THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS ONES AND SO ON .. I THINK RESIDENTS SHOULD HAVE A CHOICE AS TO WHICH LISC. PLATES THEY WANT , THE ONES THAT LIKE GEORGIA ON MY MIND SHOULD BE ABLE TO KEEP THEM AND THE RESIDENTS THAT WANT THE OTHERS CAN GET THEM .. AND TO WHAT ADVANTAGE IS IT TO DELETE THE COUNTY LOCATION .. IN THE CASE OF IDENTIFICATION ..LIKE A TRAFFIC STOP WOULD IT NOT BE ADVANTAGEOUS TO THE POLICE TO AT LEAST ON THE SPOT KNOW WHAT COUNTY THE CAR WAS FROM .. AGAIN .. IF THE RESIDENTS WANT TO KEEP THERE OLD PLATES AS THEY ARE .. I DONT SEE IT AS A PROBLEM.

This new design is really a joke, right? The .gov looks like an afterthought (or crap, where can we stick this?) and the seal or emblem in the middle looks like something from the ’50s. With the technology available today for creative design and printing on any material, there is no reason we can’t have a beautifully-designed and printed tag to represent the true beauty of our state. Let’s get some of the brightest designers to come up with their ideas and put them to a vote. Let’s have a tag we can all be proud to wear on the rears.

Sparky - comments about ones maturity are so…..immature! See, you made me say it. If it takes butt ugly tags to be enduring, then we don’t want them to be enduring. I will say, however, that a well thought out and good looking tag would last much longer than those depressing, ugly tags from certain northern states. See, I didn’t name any of them!!! Most of you don’t understand that this new tag, which will go away, was not created by a designer or any one else with a modicum of artistic flair. It was soley created by that incompetent commissioner of Revenue for no good reason!!!!

That tag is HIDEOUS!!! It isn’t classy, artistic, nor does it say anything about our beautiful state! We have Atlanta’s skyline, which is one of the most beautiful and dynamic in the country, beautiful coastal Georgia, and Beautiful north Georgia mountains! Why can’t any of THOSE elements be included so that our tag can represent our state? Also, those horrible blue tags remind me very much of the old Michigan and Pennsylvania tags…and guess what? Those states are part of the sad and depressing Rust Belt, NOT the beautiful and progressive SUN Belt!

I don’t like this new design either. Being a native Georgian, I can attest that the tags have come a long way since the 70s (white tags, blue lettering NO design whatsoever), but this design is several steps backwards. The portion of the state seal in the middle of the tag is too close to the UGA arches (I’m a UGA grad and I still don’t think this is a good idea).

And I hate that we’ve lost the “Georgia on My Mind” slogan. That’s our state song, what better way to brand the state on our car tags.

Bring back the current design with “Georgia…” and the peach, Sonny. It ain’t broke, so don’t go tryin’ to fix it!

Here’s the thing, why did the state ever do away with … Georgia on my mind?

That was a classic, classy plate design, with the peach in the middle.

Now the plate is a neutral colored advertisement for the stupid government website.

And if it weren’t for the people on these blogs, we’d have that blue monstrosity on the backs of our cars.

These politicians are supposed to be our representatives, right?

Then how come they never understand what the people want?

Go back to the plate we had five years ago, back to … Georgia, on my mind, that’s what I say.

That says something about the state. Now we have a plate like the New York plate, one with no sense of character. They took Lady Liberty off of their plates, and the New Yorkers hate it. We made ours into a tacky website advertisement, and now they’re trying to shove this on us.

I say no more! Bring back … Georgia, on my mind!

Hey, you whining Liberals (oops, redundant) should be happy with this plate. It looks very similar to Ole King Roy’s former flag. It stinks and yes, it does look like a Michigan or Delaware or Pennsylvania yankee blue. A plate should be indicative of what a State represents, and should have personality. What in the world does this shade of blue have to do with Georgia? How difficult can it be to design a tag? Why not get public input before the decision is made?

I think the basic of this tag is good. It’s appearance is ok. Just add the Peach back to the middle in it’s new color scheme instead of the state seal. We need to think of 1. How easy is it to read on the road. Some of these states you just can’t read and it’s more important for officers to be able to read the plate than for us to like it. 2. It’s not that bad a color, yes the color could have more pazazz than the Michigan blue. How about a lighter blue or a more bold blue? 3. The flat design will have better visibility, the color could use some flash, the peach goes back to the center using bolder peach and green, the state seal is awful, and who cares whether the county shows up or not, there’s so many custom plates that do not have the county anyway. 4. It’s not about what looks like art however, we did get slammed when it came to our state quarter. Who else has a more lame state quarter than GA?

I hope Bart Graham has a backup career plan. A day after his big announcement and they are already pulling back the new tag design.

I’m not sure which is worse, a corporation that hires a consultant for millions to design a new logo or a state government that sits a few political appointees in a conference room for 10 minutes to design a new license plate.

BTW: I also think the Big Blue LP is lacking in many ways. For example, look at the example above quickly and tell me what the license number is. You can’t do it. The broken sequence would result in fewer license plate numbers remembered in crimes and accidents.

Good old Bart must not be proud of his home county. He’s probably from Michigan.

What a bunch of blue and state seal obsessed bozos.

  1. Why is it that as time goes by and technology makes it easier to make artistic or cool-looking plates, states keep making them uglier and uglier and uglier each year? Look at Alabama’s, Pennsylvania’s, Ohio’s, and Indiana’s latest plates: UGLY. Why do we have to add to it? Our latest gray plates were bad enough; now this blue thing?! Come on, Georgia!

  2. It is nobody’s business what county I live in. There is no valid reason for displaying what county we live in so prominently as we do now, so that is one good thing this plate does. Most states don’t have their residents’ counties plastered on their license plates in 24-point bold-face type. It is unnecessary and others’ curiosity is not a valid reason for having it on there.

The tag is just plain ugly. It is dark and boring, and looks like a tag that would have been available 50 years ago.

Georgia’s tag should be sunny, bright, and welcoming. We should want to display an open state “personality”. We should want to live up to our slogan “ATLOPEN”.

Please don’t set Georgia back to the past with such a bland looking dark colored tag. Be creative! Be bright! Show state “personality” that people can relate to.

Personally, I like the current tags better than the new design. That color scheme doesn’t work for me at all. I, for one, am proud to display “Richmond” or “Houston” or whatever county on the tags. The tags have worked for us so far, if it’s not broken, why are tax payers paying to fix it? As for the snarky little comments and accusations that some people will complain about anything - some things need to be complained about. Believe me - you don’t want to follow Michigan’s lead, it leads to a dead end (socially, economically, politically)! I don’t want to even resemble that train wreck of a place (7.1% unemployment!!!!). To the person who reminded all of us Georgia Peaches that we no longer lead in the quantity of peach production, you need to know that our peaches are the sweetest and the best, which is waaaaay more important than being the most. Quality over quantity. Now get rid of that disgusting blue tag.

Hey folks - get a life. It’s a car tag. It’s not a house you’re buying or a car - it’s your tag. People will complain no matter the design. We’re 47th in SAT scores and we seem so proud of that - why don’t we put ‘We’re 47th’ on the tag! Just joking. The blue ones looks fine and so does the existing tag - either way it won’t add one more day to my life, put any more money in my account, or make be any more or less successful. Let the agency do their job and stop the nonsense.

Power of the people. Looks like we get a vote. Although, I will reiterate… There should not be a vote for one or two plates. As you can see, you can never satisfy everyone. There should be about 15 different designs that we can choose from when we get our tags. And I’d like them to be a little more exciting than just a plain white background with either an animal, a school, or an apple on the left side. (Or one of those stupid ‘Dawgs’.. WAR EAGLE!!)

I’d like to see Thrashers and Falcons tags, or colorful tags depicting GA’s beautiful mountains or seashore, etc.. TN and AL and FL all have a plethora of tags to choose from.

Oh, and to the person that said they were proud of their educator tag…. That’s pretty pathetic to be proud of that. With GA’s horrible national ranking I wouldnt admit that I were a teacher if I were you.

Lastly, to all those that make negative comments about it looking like a northern tag. That’s not a bad thing. I’m a damn yankee and proud of it. Didn’t the war end some 140 years ago? Oh yeah, that’s right it did. We won. Get over it.

I think the new tag is exciting, however, I do believe it need to have the COUNTY showing on it and I also think either PEACH STATE or GEORGIA ON MY MIND should be on it. The current Georgia tags are wonderful… the shading and blending of the gray and white along with the tastefully colorful peach make it stand out as a plate with character, charm, and grace. As a newcomer to Georgia I’ve found myself drawn to observing the county decals, curious to learn more about “exotic” counties I would come across. With great glee I would discuss new findings with my friends and family. Jeff Davis, Ben Hill, Coffee, Appling, Toombs, McDuffie, Echols, etc… were all gold to me.

I’ve been proud to take long out of state road trips and show off my Georgia peach plates.

It’s a real shame to see such a classy plate replaced with the uninspiring blue, county-less dud that has been presented. What was the decision making process? When did we get to vote? What was the design rationale?

A real shame…

Ugly, Ugly, Ugly. I am from Michigan and I hate the blue tag that they have. Michigan actually started a new tag that was NOT blue. Blue is so sterile, cold and disconnected. I love GA’s tag original tag with the peach because it represents what GA is all about. They need to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch—color, symbols etc. The state seal is just not doing it!

That new tag kind of reminds me of how ugly the states of Delaware and Michigans tags are, or were. Its now very personal because that thing may wind up on the back of my vehicle, if I don’t weigh in and try to do something about it. Did those people lose their minds? How could they have assumed that something like that would be acceptable to the people to a point where they actually made a real one to photograph and show the world? The move is to beautify and improve at a reasonable cost. If possible, make the tags improved AND cheaper to purchase. That tag is butt ugly!

State authorities need the tags to display the counties: Administrators and teachers at overcrowded schools identify out of district students by the tags on the cars used to drop them off at school, and law enforcement is made easier by identifying suspects with not only numbers/letters, but the county ID. I like the blue color, but put the county sticker back on. Also, what about the specialty tags? How will they look?

The new blue is simple, classy and I love the state seal in the middle instead of the stupid peach. It’s a very welcome change away from the ‘trendy’ tags (remember that awful multi-stripe thing we had a few years ago?..it looked like we bought them from an airbrush artist in Panama City.) And anyone who wants everybody else to know what county they’re from is welcome to paint the name on their car. But county names on all tags is an invasion of privacy.

Like everyone else says, the colors are horrible and will clash with a lot of vehicles. Plus the counties and the peach needs to be there. I’m not a big fan of the old tags either, but they’re better than this. We need something creative, not this ugly blue crap with white characters that aren’t even raised, which I think is a main contributor to how dull this tag is. Whatever the new tag is, I think the characters have to be raised, or it just looks dull and cheap.

I don’t mind the new one at all. And to be honest, I don’t care. We already have tens of choices for waht we put on our car. I pay my $25 to get a wildflower design b/c I like it better. Myst of my friends have selected wildlife, college pride, or other tag coices. Who cares what the free tag is? The fac that for the equivilat of $5 a year we can have wahtever we want means it doesn’t matter waht the default tag is. If you don’t like it, pick something you do. (personally, I didnt’ like the current wacked-out peach one). I’ve lived in several states before here, and it was about $100 a year for a specialty plate. I don’t much care one way or the other about the color/design but they need to have the tag number in a format that doesn’t mix letters and numbers in the same group. Our current tags use 567-ABC rather than 5A6-B7C which the new ones show. As a psychologist and expert on verbal learning and memory, the alternating format is much harder to remember— for our aging boomer population and most importantly, for crime witnesses who catch the tag number of a fleeing felon. They’ll have less accurate infor to give to the police.

I was thrilled when I saw the new tag! Finally, something sleek and classy-looking instead of that awful peach theme and peach color - I am really sick of that and it is so last century. The new one is refined, the seal matches the flag, and it is easy to read. I do think it is a shame to lose the identification of the county though. But the overall look is a huge improvement.

Now I read that Sonny is having second thoughts and worrying about popularity of the decision — I wish he’d grow a pair and stick with a decision (it was already approved, right?) instead of worrying about what the impact will be on his own popularity.

OK, the county strip is history. So why not use that same space for a ‘DUI DRIVER’ or ‘DANGEROUS DRIVER’ sticker for convicted violators. Done up in bright yellow or orange, the stickers would go well with the Yankee blue tag, and might warn others of potential danger. 35 to 50 percent of the drivers should be riding a bicycle instead of driving a vehicle. They are doing everything in their car except driving. Their distractions cause half the wrecks.

The new proposed tag is not unattractive. Why not allow Georgia residents to do what some other states permit - that is select their own tag based on personal preference. This is horrifying, and I’m embarrassed to live in a state where such an ugly tag could make it this far in the design process.

Specific criticisms: It is too “top-right heavy” with the .gov - it needs better balance on the left side and at the bottom / The blue is dismal and dark, and with the white lettering, it will look hideous on most vehicles / The ‘font’ for the tag ID is very ‘institutional’-looking / The tag doesn’t convey a clear ‘message’ about Georgia other than perhaps that it is one of the first thirteen colonies — perhaps it could try to convey something that Georgia stands for (or strives for)- such as creativity, diversity, freedom, whatever.

Perhaps the public should be invited to submit designs via the web (there are thousands of graphic artists out here with good taste), then put it up to a public vote?

SEPERATE LETTERS AND NUMBERS, EASIER TO REMEMBER FOR ANYONE INCLUDING LAW ENFORCEMENT.

I don’t like the color…I like the current non-color of white because it does not conflict with the color of my car.

I also don’t like the ga symbol in the middle. It’s too gov’t like…Makes me feel like I’m driving a gov’t issued car….and they’re going to put a bar code on them so the police can scan them???? I forgot this is not a democracy..it’s a republic….this gov’t is getting more and more redicilous by the second.

Ugly? Yes, very. But remind me again, why do we spend the time and money to change the plates every few years? They don’t wear out. Has anyone done an analysis on how much has been spent on a) designing new plates, b)issuing new ones, c) discarding old ones, and d) manufacturing new ones? Seems like a lot of resources that could be better allocated to MUCH better causes: hunger, education, homelessness are examples that come to mind.

First of all, between the Georgia on My Mind tag and all the specialty tags available, why do we need another new tag? I’m sure there are more important things for our government to spend money on.

Secondly, I love the counties being displayed on our tags. Not only is reading the counties on tags as you travel a fun thing to do, we have used it as a learning tool. In Georgia our 8th students take Georgia History where they are required to learn all the Georgia counties and their county seat. Leading up to the 8th grade, during our children’s time in 8th grade and long after our children and my husband and I have left the middle school years behind; we use the listing of the counties to keep our memory skills sharp.

I am a firm believer in change, but only when it is needed and not just something to spend money on.

Please let this issue come to the voters where I can have a say so in shooting down this unnecessary project that would be funded with my tax dollars.

Keep a dominant peach “picture” on the plate. This is something that is identified with/says “Georgia.” The state seal is not known by the geneal populace, especially when driving in other states. Color OK. Non-raised numbers/letters for easier recognition a great idea.

Initial thoughts… 1) YUCK! 2) Stale(which seems to be the mindset of the creator) 3) Cold(which Georgia is NOT) 4) Boring(looks like a 90 yr old blind man done this - give a kid a box of crayons to spruce it up a bit, PLZ)

Personally the current tag is good - but if you are insisting on change - Lighten it up and don’t give us no baby blue mess, leave the white/grayish colors for background just put some colorful numbers/letters and a bigger PEACH on there - hell even a peanut farm would look better on there considering the current “trial look”.

Please consult a professional before “thinking” to redesign our tags again.

Lets have the children of the state create tag ideas at school then place them on line and have the peole vote for the best. this would create interest, reveal talent, and be something that all Georgian’s could appreciate. We could call the competition “Tag Idol” and award a scholarship to the winning entry. Wait, that would make too much sense and would save money..so it will NEVER happen:(

Why don’t we do like Florida? Have a lot of designs to choose from, but keep the county names on the tags. We could do a series on State Symbols…live oak tree, brown thrasher, cherokee rose, honey bee, etc., those would be attractive. One for each of Georgia’s landmarks….Stone Mountain, Okefenokee, Providen Canyon, etc…Georgia has so much to honor and advertise, what better than a car tag that goes all over the state/country?

not sure if a public vote is neccessary. afterall if 5 crappy designs are presented, we’ll still end up with a crappy design. the public might hate a dark background but if lighter numbers/letters on a dark background are proven to be more legible then public opinion shouldn’t have much weight on that issue. that seal is another issue. hopefully a reputable design professional will be consulted before moving farther.

Yvonne’s right. Yeah, its butt ugly but does a new license plate design really deserve all of this attention when (for comparison’s sake) roughly 5000 babies are murdered in the womb every single day in our country? Thats 5000 real people. Not imaginary people. Real flesh and bone people. Almost twice the number murdered on 9/11. I’m not trying to kick up a firestorm over abortion but honestly some things just pale in comparison. Its a real shame that those people, killed, don’t get any attention at all.

This current design is not appealing. I think that the background shouldn’t be a solid blue. It should be a lighter color blue and the background could have a different color in the center sandwiched in a lighter blue color. The plate should have the slogan for the state on it. I’m glad to hear that this design is back to the drawing board, hopefully something a whole lot better will come up soon.

I do not see any point in changing the current tag. There hasn’t really been any complaints about the current tag but I do see many on the new proposed design. Why fix something that isn’t broken? This new design does not represent Georgia because for one thing it reduces the peach that has so richly represented this state to almost nothing. Whenever someone sees a passing tag with that Peach on it, they know that car is coming from Georgia. They do not even have to read the state name to figure it out. It is a huge symbol in Georgia and it is seen everywhere. Even if someone does not want that peach on their tag, how would that affect other tags that are around. Have you ever seen a blue tag with UGA or GA Tech on it? What about Spelman, Morehouse or other schools that have tags made for them? What about the current tags that are made for wildlife and other specialized tags? It is definitely not unique. Have you seen the Michigan and Pennsylvania tags? They are not too different from this proposed design. Oh I forgot Pennsylvania did not like the tag so they changed it and it was once VERY similar to this proposed new design. The only difference is that it had a cracked bell in the middle. If they didn’t like it, why would we? The bottom line is that this is one UGLY tag that should have never crossed anyone’s mind.I might just ask other students and faculty at my school(Clayton State University) what they feel about this new design. After all the Georgia and National Archive is close by. Maybe we can get a clue from there to figure out the next new design for the state tag if it must be changed.

I must say that when I use to travel as a child, I would look at all the tags on the cars passing by and tell my mom…”Hey, they’re from where we are from!” Well, with these new tags…I’d be ashamed to say I am from Georgia. I grew up in Florida and from what I can see today with the many choices Floridians have…maybe we need to send our brain surgeons in Georgia government to Tallahassee to figure out how to develop a color scheme that’s more suitable to be on a vehicle. I do think it’s time for a change (and a little color wouldn’t hurt), but let’s not change to that overly simplistic and boring tag that says very LITTLE about the people in Georgia. Any by the way, if we make a change, let’s give the people of Georgia options!

I hope you’re not going to charge atheists and agnostics more to decline this plate and take another. Expect law suits if you do. I’m all for leaving the county name off, though. I live in Cobb County, which has been internationally embarrassed by its stance on evolution. I thought about putting a Darwin fish on my car to counter my “Cobb County” plates. I declined, not wishing my car to be keyed by some right-wing evangelical. “That would never happen,” you may say. Right-wing evangelicals have blown up women’s clinics, and shot the people who work there. Shot them dead. The people who follow them name their babies after the murderer. Why not stick with the peach, and “Georgia on My Mind,” which is such a nice motto? It’s secular, and there’s no controversy.

The ugly blue plate immediately reminds me of Michigan (I’ve never lived there) seen on many cars in the Atlanta metro area. This plate is soooo bad we would need to change colors every year, which may not be a bad idea since we can’t get our folks to put the Month and/or Year stickers in the correct place and since the new plates are not embossed, we should be able to create our own license plates on our personal computers - (something like printing your own money). Tag design is uglier than a mud fence. Like the idea of the “bar-coding” to assist police in determining if the vehicle is covered by insurance or if its on the “hot sheet” as stolen or if it was involved in some type of criminal activity. Emboss the lettering and numbers, make ‘em bigger and, by all means, keep the county identification strip.

Peach, peanut, pecan, whatever: it doesn’t matter because its so small one can not identify what it is unless they are very close.

Instead of the coat of arms in the center of the plate, how about an image of the carving on Stone Mountain?

I think is makes no senes to spend money on new plates. The current GA plates look fine to me. There is one thing I do find a bit odd. I never understood why Georgians have their counties on their plates, anyway. I guess it’s a southern thing. Plus, why do you need to know where someone comes from, anyway? This looks like the tag from Delaware. Do we want to be Delaware?

The existing tag is fine. If we changed it, we could at least stick with the white background so the change isn’t so drastic. This reminds me of the “ATL every day is an opening day” ad campaign. The idea was to put a better spin on Atlanta’s image. People aren’t so easily fooled. We know what the problems are in Geogia - traffic, pollution, and sprawl. Why not spend the money to fix these?

I like the current one just fine. This one is Very Very UGLY. I do not like it leave it alone and fix some of the things that are in need of repair.

That Cherokee Rose is very nice and should still be good visibility for law enforcement. I’m not sure if the folks objecting to the dark blue would also hate the black, though.

I hope the state considers it, or at least runs some sort of submission-by-the-people program to get more ideas.
