What did you think about the Super Bowl ads?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Alright, the big game’s over, now the real work begins. Were this year’s Super Bowl commercials a hit or a bust?
Our panel of Atlanta advertising experts (below) picked their MVPs. What do you think? Agree or disagree? Which commercial would you say was the best?
B.A. Albert, Chief Executive Officer, Match Inc.: My MVP is the Fed Ex cavemen, with special hats off to the Burger King Whopperettes and the sweet streaker Budweiser sheep and sentimental baby clydesdale.
Sarah Lattimer, partner, Lattimer-Moffitt Communications: The Burger King commercial. Really entertaining and campy. Also ran: Ameriquest, Budweiser (baby clydsdales) and Disney Land. Emerald Nuts, Sharpie and Outback should have saved their money.
Eduardo Perez, president, PM Publicidad: Hard to pick a really outstanding and clear winner. As usual, some good and entertaining spots, some really bad ones that make you wonder “why and a couple that might actually sell some product.
Guy Tucker, president, AskGuy.com: Mick Jagger was the MVP, even the kids here thought so, (they called the Rolling Stones oldies). Ameriquest was great and ESPN mobile was pretty neat, too (sports all around you whereever you are actually related to their product, how novel.)

Granted cavemen spots have been done before, but FedEx’s very funny and exquisite production values was awesome. I loved it. They stayed on the strategy of the current campaign but did something quite entertaining and memorable.

Best Bud Light spot yet, the guys on the roof. You just can’t beat a good sight gag. The Americquest spot is part of a brilliant campaign that is all about not judging people. (killing the fly in the operating room) They are excellent. And a good direction for the company to take.

Sorry, late to the party, thank God for Tivo. The FedEx “Caveman” spot was a tremendous execution and very humerous. I think last year’s Pepsi Super Bowl spot was better than this year’s. The Toyota “Bilingul” spot for their hybrid car is significant for me because it’s the first TV commercial produced by a Hispanic advertising agency to appear during the Super Bowl.

Briefly: FedEx ‘Caveman’: marvelous Bud Light ‘Grizzly’: dumb. Diet Pepsi ‘Brown & Bubbly’ (PDiddy & Mohr): terrible. What a waste. Aleve ‘Dr. Spock’: very nice. Terrific creative idea. Ameriquest Fly: thoughtless at best. Who the hell approved that one? Bud Light Roof: cute but……nothing real new here. Diet Pepsi Stuntman (Jackie Chan & Mohr): weak. BLight spots not getting it done. Acrua mdx: dreadful.

The Mobile ESPN was outstanding! For a “long” :60 spot it was engaging, fabulously produced, memorable and did a terrific job of creating a strong mental connection to life with Mobile ESPN. This will be a contender for the overall. The “dancing lambs” Budweiser spot once again provided the usual beer commercial humor. And the Cadillac Escalade commercial was impressive and had a great “look and feel” a did a decent job of positioning the vehicle as exclusive, sexy and high end.

Finally a real breath of fresh air, the Dove Self esteem spot, True Colors, with a message to girls (!) about how perfection isn’t always what is best. I loved it, smack in the middle of boys world/beer/slapstick. Odd choice of media buy but stands out because of it.

Briefly: Bud ‘Streaker’: silly follow-up to a true classic. ESPN Sports Heaven/Cell Phone: excellent. Brings concept alive. CareerBuilder ‘Monkeys”: seen it all before, a hundred times. Cadillac Escalade ‘Runway’: intriguing execution, but cold and dispassionate. Campaign For Real Beauty: self-esteem for young girls. Marvelous and heartfelt. A winner.

Love the Bud Light spot with the husbands on the roof. Made me laugh out loud, and shows they really identify with the guys they’re targeting.
Dove’s “real beautyâ€? campaign was a great strategic move. The continuation with a self-esteem fund is brilliant.
So far the auto category is disappointing. Big money down the drain on the Escalade spot.

Briefly: Michelob Light ‘Touch Football’: unnecessarily violent (esp vs. women) and not real funny. Godaddy.com: What a self-referential waste of $2MM. Poseidon Adventure remake: looks horrible. Gillette Fusion: big production for a big new product. Atom smasher! Need something flashy to get guys to spend $12 on a razor. So in that sense, it worked well. Overstock.com: a bit too passive for what they spent to air it. Disney 50th: nice, historical, fitting for Disney. Good tonality. Nice use of Walt at end.

My last comment was re: the Clydesdale/sheep spot. When I did my Budweiser time we had to have a pour shot, a (girls) butt shot, a boob shot and the Clydesdales in every storyboard.

I think all the Anheuser-Busch commercials are great as always! You can never go wrong with Bud Light spots, and the new Ultra Amber ad was very entertaining. I think the best beer ad is the hitch. You got to love the Clydesdales!
The Pizza Hut ones STINK.
I like the “Don’t judge too soon” ads. They’re great.
FCC needs to let godaddy.com run their ads! Looks like G.W. censors another person… or is he spying on the hosting company???
I’ll have a Bud Light while I figure it out!

Motorola “Pepple” was a cool spot but it doesn’t compel me to go think any further about it. The Nationwide “Fabio” spot does an excellent job of lulling the viewer into thinking its are really bad brand extention and then effectively using a time-testic tactic, “surprise” at the end. A very good TV commercial.

Touchdown Budweiser!
Once again, the King of Beer rules supreme on the Super Bowl. The spot featuring the young colt trying to pull the beer wagon was one of the best I’ve seen in years.
Destined to be a classic. Just like the Budweiser brand.

Sprint ‘Lockerroom’: good spot. ABC ‘Lost’ Promo: quite good. ABC Promo Strategy Overall: very good. Trailing in network ratings and using the opportunity to attract new viewers. God knows they need ‘em. Sharpie Retractable ‘Pirate’: Incredibly weak idea. So many other possibilities. Bud Clydesdales: sweet and classy. Nationwide ‘Fabio’: worthless. NFL Mobile ‘Avaocado’: dumb and forgettable.
Stones Halftime: not bad, not great.
First half winners: Burger King, Mobile ESPN, FedEx Caveman, Real Beauty/Girls Self-Esteem. First half Industry Creative Grade: D.
First Half Game Grade: D.
Second half looks great, though!

Budweiser is doing a nice job continuing their brand. Nice story, beautifully produced. But what was that Nationwide spot with Fabio? Doesn’t give me warm ‘n fuzzy feelings for the insurance company, or peak my interest. Just looks like an attempt to be funny for the Super Bowl, but missed. Good job by Careerbuilder.com. Very funny - and who hasn’t worked with a jackass?

Budweiser’s agencies have been doing a great job of delivering really “cute” commercials that tug at the emotions and make you feel warm about the brand. The Hummer spot was very amusing, albeit a little weird. But weird can be good during the SB. Good Toyota Tacoma commercial that continues their recent campaign of communicating the truck’s durability through rather absurd and unrealistic “demonstrations”.

Looks like the King of Beers remains the King of Commercials. I prefer the understated “colt” over the “streaker” spot, but they were both good.
The “I’m going to Disneyland” spot and the Mobile ESPN were probably the best brand-building spots. And isn’t that the idea?
I can’t believe the money Gillette spent on that “Fusion” ad! Unbelievable. Personally, I’m holding out until they can put 10 blades on a razor.

The Hummer Godzilla mates with king kong spot was pretty memorable. And Sprint’s Couch on Fire wa, with a nod to Benny Hill, quite entertaining. Nice to see advertisers spending money on production, music rights and celebrities again, good sign for the future.

Are they nuts?
Emerald Nuts just wasted $2.5 million. Did anybody else get that spot?
And in my opinion, Ameriquest fumbled twice in the game tonight. Funny set ups that led nowhere close to a brand payoff.

Hummer ‘Monsters Baby’: Horrible. Just horrible. Toyota Tacoma Invincible ‘Shoreline’: fascinating execution. Great demo of product toughness. Maybe the best spot yet. FedEx wins so far. Very cool. The Hummer ad was almost as perverted and disgusting as the vehicle itself. And by the way, this is the WORST officiating I’ve ever seen in an NFL game, let alone a Super Bowl. Seattle’s gettin’ jobbed bigtime.

Both Emerald Nuts and Ameriquest spots are part of ongoing campaigns, that if you haven’t seen might leave you feeling that way. They are not “one shots” like lots of the Super Bowl spots usually are, but a continuation of a strategy that has been ongoing. Simply a name recognition for Emerald Nuts and Ameriquest just keeps seating the notion that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. An excellent campaign in my opinion. The latest commercial, for Mastercard in the Priceless campaign, really pushed their normal conservative voice and pushed it, using McGyver spoof. quite nice.

McGyver (spelling?) MasterCard=hilarious. Note the items on the grocery belt at end of spot. Emerald Nuts—what? Bud crowd pouring beer—crowd here loved. Just cool looking.
Still liked naked sheep bud better…and magic fridge is still crowd favorite. Funny but felt sterotypical.

Airtan ad was very smart and funny. It does a great job of delivering the message and benefit. Budweiser and their agencies are doing a great job this year. Both the stadium spot and the multilingual “cheers” spot are rewarding advertising.

Not a great year for SuperBowl spots. However: I loved ESPN’s Sports Heaven and the “Little Monster” Hummer spot. Also liked the Buweiser spot with the little Clydesdale pulling the wagon. The Bud Light spots are silly - message being “drink Bud Light and turn into a moron.” CareerBuilders spots are always good. Ameriquest, still good. Burger King was good, loved the build of the hamburger. The game is pretty boring.

Wide Left and Right…
B.A.,
In my opinion, the Super Bowl isn’t a place for “serial” ads. Viewers are expecting stand alone spots that are creative and compelling. Or brand suppoerting spots like “Colt” from Budweiser. One note: I did think Budweiser missed with the “Cheers” ad. Been done and better.

Represting the 30 and under audience here. Probably the only one on the blog.
As the youngest on the target for the BUD spots, the best of the last four years. Last year being the worst - Bud Light Skydive ‘04 = Best I’ve seen in all Super Bowls, save for the classic lizards.
Although the first ESPN Mobile spot was engaging and entertaining for a SB spot, props to the 30 second ESPN spot. Short, sweet and direct. I knew what they were “selling”, as opposed to the 60 spot production (don’t get me wrong - an excellent one at that).
Sprint Nextel - definite “water cooler” tomorrow. Great call on that. FedEx: not funny. Yes, yes, I’m not the target. But you must admit - mediocre copy and subpar casting. And unoriginal: think Geico. Now that was great Cave Man.
Overall - Bud Light Roof Spot takes the (proverbial) cake. And this is the 24-year-old opinion - I’m watching the game with about 30 others my age. All agree.
Go Steelers.

Mastercard ‘Macgyver’: excellent. Could’ve used more like this. World Baseball Championships: pretty minor league stuff. Outback Steakhouse ‘Boomerang’: just awful.
Well, that’s it. Game over. Winner: Steelers. Ad Winner: Burger King’s Busby Berkeley Musical spot. Top Finishers: Bud’s ‘Colt’; Toyota Tacoma ‘Shoreline’; Dove’s Girls’ Beauty campaign; Mastercard ‘Macgyver’. Game Grade: C. Saved by a decent 2nd half. Ad Industry Grade: D. My MVP is for the Fed Ex spot with the cavemen, but with special hats off to the Burger King Whopperettes and that sweet streaker Budweiser sheep and the sentimental baby clydesdale. The standout this year was the Burger King commercial. Really entertaining and campy. Also ran: Ameriquest; Budweiser (baby clydsdales); Disney Land; Not much creativity this year, alot of mediocre spots. Emerald Nuts, Sharpie and Outback should have saved their money.

Hands down the top ad was the Dove spot. It spoke directly to the body-image problems of young girls and introduced a solution. Simple, clean, beautiful execution.
Close second was the young Clydsdale ad in the barn. Great twist at the end. I’ll watch for it in the future.
There was no third place ad. Just a lot of the usual hip-slick-and-cool-wannabe silliness.
And the reliable handul of dull car advertising.
Great game, though….

Hard to pick a really outstanding and clear winner. As usual, some good and entertaining spots, some really bad ones that make you wonder “why” and a couple that might actually sell some product. “Super Bowl ads” have defined a category of their own with the primary objective of making an strong impression, perhaps at the expense of being effective advertising.

These ad agencies are trying too hard. I find myself overly critical of ads and find them very juvenile. Especially the beer commercials. I really believe that the commercial craze of Super Bowls are on there way out. It may not change for a couple of more Super Bowls but a new day is coming. They NFL rode high for a little while but I have grown weary of these commercials.

For me, as a viewer, it’s all about what makes me laugh.
The Ameriquest adds, with the dead fly and the lady on the plane where the funniest adds of the night!
Right behind were the guy working with monkeys and girl working with jackasses. The monkey burning money to light a cigar and then making the man dance was gut busting!
The Bud Light adds, as always, were goofy and funny.
And I really enjoyed the sheep streaker-clydesdale add.
Those adds were the laugh out loud funny adds, and for this poor schlub, that’s what matters.

Sweetest - The Bud commercial where the young Clydesdale is trying to pull the wagon and just when you applaud the fact that he finally gets it to move, it shows his parents secretly pushing it for him…just beautiful.
Dumbest - the PS cleaner thing commercial where everyone was wearing the green hazmat suits…boring and dumb.

I thought the MacGyver ad was the best. I just wish it had played a little earlier in the game. Definitely a nostalgia winner. I liked the Bud ‘streaker’. Funny and unexpected. The Bud Light husbands on the roof also made us laugh.
The FedEx caveman ad was a great continuation of their current campaign. The flying dinosaur getting eaten was funny but the foot at the end was hilarious. I was disappointed in the ads for the show “Sons and Daughters”. We had to mute/fast forward past every single one of those because I thought they were inappropiate for the young kids in the room. I also thought the Pizza Hut Start Poppin one was a bit much for the time slot where it was shown.

VERY few creative commercials this year. Possibly the worst SB lineup I’ve ever seen. The Pepsi commercials were worthless…especially the P. Diddy one. Spock’s Aleve commercial was pretty amusing, as was the BK Whopperettes. Sprint’s “Crime Deterrent” was pretty funny, and the majority of the Bud ads were good. It seems as though we haven’t had a good succession of SB commercials since the 1990s, This year there were more “chick commercials” than ever. Why? Because the marketing gurus figured out that a whopping 38% of SB watchers are WOMEN, which of course means that the majority of the viewers (men) have to suffer for the rights of the minority (women) to be represented, hence, weak commercials for the most part. Thanks a lot women… you won’t be happy until every realm of a man’s world is overturned, huh?

THANK YOU, anthemman. Finally someone else mentioned what my husband and I thought was the biggest goof of the might. Aaron Neville and Aretha CANNOT sing anymore. Aaron began in a key that was not remotely within his range and Aretha has just plain lost her voice. It’s time for people to begin facing the music - or lack thereof.
For us, the “Magic Frig” was the topper of the night, followed closely by the Sprint “Cell Phone Defense Mechanism” guys, the FedEx cavemen, Bud’s “Streaking Lamb”, Husbands-on-the-roof, and Little Clydsdale (with a little help from the folks), and the BK Busbie Berkley review. The Jessica Simpson ad was a huge waste and the GoDaddy ad was just plain unintelligble. And their point was ?….. My husband was the first to say, “What was that about?”

None of the commercials did much for me. FedEx may have had the best, but that was not worth the millions they paid for in my opinion. Of all the Super Bowls, this group was a DUD!

Loved the Sprint Crime Deterrent phone – gotta get me one of those. I thought the Dove commercial was so out of place and just put there to make people feel guilty and think that they should feel compassion when they’re trying to have fun. Kinda like a homeless person going into a bar to ask for donations – making people feel bad for having a good time when there are so many problems in the world. This was supposed to be about fun and entertainment. Save the compassion spots for Oprah.

Why all the love for the DUMB BK spot? What’s funny is I’ve seen nothing on the bad Full Throttle spots-and they must have dumped a fortune on those! Bud light ads were great-office “incentives” and magic fridge hilarious. Loked the Ameriquest ads too.

Markus, you have some real issues.
I don’t remember half the commercials, but that’s probably because I was more interested in the game and really not watching commercials. The few I saw were good such as Bud Light with guys on the roof and Monkey’s in the board room (Who’s ad was it anyway) which was hilarious.

MacGyver tops my list with Mastercard. The FedEx spot was cool. The best Bud commercials were the fans’ signs with the Bud & the office chaos with the hidden beers. Halftime was ho-hum. I like the Stones, but the audience knows the Superbowl is trying to book safe acts since the “incident”, still wierd they didn’t think any Motown acts would be safe enough to perform in Detroit. They still had to cut a couple of words from the Stones song.

I did not see any classics in the mix, but there were a few good ones. One thing is certain, the commercials were better than anything else. The game was absolutely horrible unless you were a team fan, the two “singers” of the national anthem (as well as the people who thought they were a good idea) should be personally embarassed over that pathetic garbage, the production value of the other sets was atrocious and the Rolling Stones showed their age.

Well, HUMMER NOW OFFICIALLY SUCKS! What were they thinking with that crap? They have completely sold out. I really wish I had those few seconds of my life back. As a long time off-roader and owner of many 4x4’s, I would buy a New Beetle before I got in one of those flimsy station wagons. At the other end of the spectrum, Toyota’s image is skyrocketing and that commercial of theirs with the truck getting washed around in the surf was the best of the night. I love what you do for meee….TOYOTA!

I think the Gillete ad for their new five blade razor was the best Super Bowl ad.

Nextel - both of their ads were our favorites - we couldn’t stop laughing at the one that paid tribute to Benny Hill. “Yakkety Sax” = comedy. Always.

The best commerical was the one that wasn’t shown by Godaddy.com. They are taking this censor thing a bit to far if you ask me. Plus, the commericals were just as boring as the game was this year.

Only one thing was missing from the Bud Light commercial w/ husbands on the roof. If the excuse was to clean gutters, the house was noticably gutter-free.

I was on a panel of judges over in Birmingham, and some of our favorites were:
We loathed Overstock.com, Kermit the Frog for Ford Escape, and the embarrassing BellSouth spot (was that in the Atlanta market or Bham only?) for their spamblocker.
I’ve worked for an Anheuser-Busch roster shop, and I know that they’ll produce two dozen spots for this, only to narrow down at the last moment to the 10-15 they actually run. Bud Light had some wonderful bright spots (Magic Fridge, Hidden Bud Lights in the office)… they’re always funnier than Bud in my opinion.
Burger King was incredibly ambitious; I think it could have been just a bit, weirder.
I think that what Ameriquest and FedEx are really doing are “annual serial campaigns.”
Simple, brilliant strategies that can be executed in fresh ways, again and again. You’ve got to believe that great account planners played a role in that Ameriquest campaign. In an industry so obsessed with rates and closing costs, they found a way to stake out a truly unique positioning - don’t prejudge - and they manage to come out with fresh, smart executions against that positioning year after year.
Overall, though, it was a B to B-minus year. Some bright spots but nothing truly inspired that had me filled with jealousy.

I liked the Federal Express caveman, the Ameriquest ad on the plane, the Budweiser baby Clydesdale, and the Dove self esteem ads.. Many people at the party I attended thought the Burger King ‘Whopperettes’ ad was a bit kinky.;) The Diet Pepsi ads were lousy as was the Ameriquest ad in the hospital room. The others didn’t stand out.

I liked the godaddy.com commercial. It was a spoof off of last year’s SB commercial. They were commenting on how they couldn’t get anyone to show the commercials (because of the rep from the last commercial in the SB). I checked godaddy.com and they edited and shot 13 commercials and got the 14th approved. The other submissions had better discerned plot lines, they just weren’t approved. It’s a man’s commercial, no fluff (except everything edited out).
The “Brown and Bubbly” commercial was very weird. I am white, so if I ran around saying “Brown and Bubbly” in front of anyone of color, I’d get killed. The only reason they had that commercial is because black people were in it. If it was a white guy, there’d be an uproar.

Hey Nancy…thanks for the laugh….
You didn’t need to type the text “THIS TEXT WILL BE BOLDED”…..only the “**” before and after the item.. LOL
How long did you look for the “any key” the first time you read, “Hit Any Key to Continue”???
Oh, that’s rich….

I enjoyed the Burger King commercial. It was very entertaining. I also liked the Bud Light hidden in the office commercial. A thought about Hines Ward, when he introduced himself, he said “Hines Ward from Forest Park, Georgia”. Most players indicate what college they played for. Is Hines angry at UGA about something? Or is he ashamed of UGA for some reason?

Why does everyone like the Burger King commercial so much? I don’t like the “King” at all and I think the commercial was one of the worst during the whole broadcast.
The Bud commercials were great though and the commercial for the movie “V for Vendetta” certainly kept everyone’s attention. The Michelob Light, Careerbuilder, and Ameriquest commercials were hilarious, which I think is the good thing about Super Bowl commercials.
The Emerald Nuts commercial was pretty bad too.
